Yeah I thought because I'm near sighted, that meant I didn't need the glasses. I figured it's up close, that's what I CAN see. I was wrong, it's night and day with my glasses. Luckily mine fit inside the headset.

kaleid1990

That's because even though the headset is strapped to your face, the lenses project the content at about 2m.

ZoddImmortal

1.3 meters, since at least the Quest 1. https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/1371485209603022853?lang=en

kaleid1990

I can't see 40cm past my nose, so either way I still need prescription lenses, but good to know for others who come across this thread, thanks!

AlterSack1973

I also did this first, but it pressed on the nose and the side of the head. The inserts were 69EUR and it‘s more comfortable and can set the distance of the spacer to the second closest setting.

Getabock_

I highly recommend getting prescription glasses inserts for the headset. It’s just night and day in comfort, at least for me.

Wizardwizz

Yep, also protects your lenses as I heard they scratch easily

SnakeO1LER

Just get the inserts. Mine fit but scratched the lenses.

Vatican87

The quest lens is of course meant to be seen in the distance so I don’t know how you didn’t figure this out…it’s just another pair of eyes.

Sirlothar

It does feel kinda annoying. The screen is two inches from your face, I can read 20/20 at that distance, but when I put the headset on I can't see shit. I understand that with the lenses, it makes your eyes feel that the image is 2.5 M away and now I have prescription lenses and all is well. It's kind of surreal how clearly I can see through the Q3 pass through, it's kind of like glasses lite.

Unfair_Salamander_20

Really, you can read something 2 inches from your face?  For me it's a massive blur, it has to be like 6 inches away to get perfectly clear.

Sirlothar

lol, my vision is really bad. -6.00 in left and -6.50 in right. My nearsightedness gives me 20/20 from about 2" - 6" away from my face and after that it's all a blur. I know overall the color passthrough isn't great but it really surprised me how clear it is with my new lenses. edit: I pulled out my little Zenni ruler that lets you measure IPD and I get fully clarity at 2.5", before that its blurry.

Sullkattmat

Eyy that's exactly around my vision as well lol, haven't tried looking through the headset without my contacts though, need to try it out at some point purely out of curiosity. As an aside for someone who can appreciate what it means, I still can't grasp how I played goalie in bandy in my youth.. For anyone(most?) who don't know it, it's a bit like a mix between football(soccer) and ice hockey. Football size field but on ice with skates and a stick(tho shorter than a hockey stick) played with a ball a bit smaller than a baseball. Oh and shooting you can swing the stick basically like you do with a golf driver. In other words that tiny ball comes with a fair bit of speed.. And no stick or anything as a goalie, just padded gloves. I must have been just the worst player ever lol

Unfair_Salamander_20

Wow I had no idea nearsightedness was like that.  Like the "worse" your nearsighted ness is, the closer you can see things clearly?  Cool thanks for sharing.

Sirlothar

I am no eye expert but I tested what my eyes do and that does seem to be the case. Makes having to look at your phone at night in bed really annoying. I have this program that lets my phone be extra dim at night so I don't fry my eyes if I have to look at it in bed a couple inches from my face.

wordyplayer

HUGE fan of my lens inserts. Highly recommend them to any glasses wearers

cannon

I got insets for mine as well. Well worth the money. I had the optometrist set it for 1.5m. I just wish there was a magnetic inset where the magnet part is compatible between Quest 2 and Quest 3.

pixxelpusher

The Quest 3 lenses are weird. While they are way sharper, they seem to be set at a position that forces you to wear glasses if your eyes are even just a little bit bad. So I always have to wear glasses with them if I want it to look sharp. Quest 2 didn't have this issue. The lenses were set in a way that the screen looked sharp without glasses. So I never had to wear my glasses. I really wish they made Quest 3 to have a greater tolerance like Quest 2 did.

Pixogen

Tomorrow’s post: What are these marks on my lens.

Toboe_Irbis

Yup, screens in quest HMD thanks to VR lenses appears about 1-1.5m in front of you. Without those lenses your eyes would not be able to focus on screen as close as they are irl. Because screen appears 1.5m away from your eyes, you might have hard time reading text if you are shortsighter. Even when you move close to virtual text, screen displaying it is still 1.5m away from your face making it blurry. Your vergence (sightlines crossing on object determining distance) is different than accommodation (single-eye focus on distance).

Embarrassed-Ad7317

Heheh yes, that much should be obvious If you cant find the sweet spot on the Q3, you either got a very bad unit, or you need glasses It is very hard to not be in the sweet spot otherwise ;)

Time_Concert_1751

I've worn glasses since 1983, I am myopic. I got my Quest 2 in 2021 and used it for two years without glasses, I'd seen a lot of complaints online about how frenel lenses are terrible and there is a "Sweet spot", so I just chalked the haziness down to bad lenses and enjoyed my device while it was hazy. I got my Quest 3 in october and kept looking for that "Marked Improvement" that everyone was talking about, it seemed about the same to me. Then I saw a video of a youtuber wearing glasses under their Quest, thought I'd try it; had a "holy crap" moment.

momentofinspiration

Reading text in VR is pretty much a home optometrist test, there's all different sizes at different distances.

Oftenwrongs

I'm near sighted. I can see decently without, but prescription inserts make a huge difference.

hadtstec

Also, the official inserts are glass and protect your lenses. for that alone they are worth the money.

grahamaker93

insert lenses are gamechangers. I used to slip my glasses between my face and the CV1 and it was uncomfortable, fogs up all the time. Decided to go with magnetic lens inserts when i bought the quest 3. It's just a whole different experience.

NOS4NANOL1FE

I been pawning off an eye exam for so long. Finally set one up for this Saturday. I know I have bad myopia and astigmatism. Cant wait to get my numbers so I can get my inserts also Some text is really fuzzy for me to see so its going to be amazing to see in actual hd while gaming!

Least_Impression_823

My left eye is fine but my right eye is always blurry.

Delicious-Tachyons

i was super disappointed when i got my q2 and realized that even though the image is technically closer to my eyeballs, i still needed my glasses ... got inserts which are great.

Tennis_Proper

I consider my eyesight to be free FSAA with no performance hit.

NotReallyJohnDoe

If you get glasses late in life (40s+) you probably only need them for things up close. I have reading glasses for computers, books, phone. But since the Quest is at a distance, I don’t need glasses for VR. I just have to remember where I left them when I put on the headset.

Moist-Construction59

I’m getting LASIK this week, kind of curious to see if there’s a big difference
