Enjoy your new portal. Be careful not to die in VR though or else you die in real life.

the2belo

Not like this. *Not like this...*

congradulations

Switch is dead in my house too. RIP other consoles

Aekero

underrated lol

NeegzmVaqu1

Wait what... I'm still alive. Does that mean I escaped the matrix?

No you just forgot to enter the Konami code on the 3rd lion roar you're still on the light side of the moon

NavyBlue133

it's all fun and games until meta renames the quest to nervegear

[deleted]

Except if you play Accounting+…

iBeelz

I also had my mind blown two weeks ago when I bought mine. So much that I can’t stop telling people to buy one so we can play together lol.

Nice-Violinist-6395

lol I’ve been texting people about it all afternoon because I’m so hyped and they’re all like “uh, cool?” It’s legitimately impossible to describe what it’s like unless you’ve tried it

ice1000

>It’s legitimately impossible to describe what it’s like unless you’ve tried it I feel the same way. It's an experiential thing. I have also tried to explain it to my friends and they don't get it. Perfect example of experiential vs vicarious learning.

DuoBrando

Its a fact that each 7 of my friends that dismissed the headset at first, when they came round to try it all have now bought one

Thomas_KT

all the veterans gave up on explaining at this point for that reason lol

lman777

Yes, and this is the biggest barrier to VR! You sound crazy explaining it, until the person actually tries it and then they finally understand. Everything you are saying reminds me of getting mine at the beginning of the year.

NathanialJD

>Yes, and this is the biggest barrier to VR! You sound crazy explaining it, until the person actually tries it and then they finally understand. You could say the exact same thing about LSD or shrooms

LoadedGull

Yep. I bought my very first pc (well, gaming laptop) in June, whacked 2x16gb hyperx impact ram and a 2tb 970 Evo Plus in it… specifically and only to be used for VR. No regrets.

theriftreport

Me too...just got a gaming laptop (as I needed a new laptop for work purposes) and literally it just sits as a VR gaming hub which I connect to wirelessly with the Quest. Of course it's like getting a huge upgrade to the Quest 2 although I still love all the stand alone games too. Currently have HL:Alyx and RE4 that I'm alternating between, both amazing. Can't wait for that RE2 VR mod to come out...looks amazing and never did play more than a few minutes of RE2 back in the day.

Flashy_Experience_46

Hi. Do you play pcvr with another headset? Or when you say pcvr do you mean the quest 2 connected by cable or wireless to the PC?

TheReluctantAtheist

Yes, the quest connected to a PC via cable or via wireless connection (Air link)

Flashy_Experience_46

Thank you.

CIoud-Hidden

I just tried Alyx last week, I think I’m still recovering lol. Mindblowing.

willnotforget2

Yup. Have them over, have a beer, throw them in Superhot and start taking pictures of everyone you show it too. You’ll have quite an album and a nice group of friends to play with. :)

BluSkyler

Yes, you’ve got to bring it with you to a chill social function one day and give them a trial run of something simple and easy to demo. Have you tried Richie’s Plank?

[deleted]

Richies plank demo is great for selling people on how real VR can be, especially if you have a board you can throw on the floor. Legit had me almost fall on my face as I tried to jump back in the elevator because my brain told me my foot mis stepped turning around. My ex couldn’t step out of the elevator, got all the way down on her hands and knees trying to crawl out and had to give up. It’s just so real feeling when you add that little bit of real world feedback (the board and in our case a fan we turn on as the elevator doors open).

JohnnyTomatoSauce

Didn’t even think of how much more realistic the wood plank would be. I could barely do it without it. Tried to convince myself it wasn’t real but it took me a good 20 minutes. Probably looked like an idiot doing it because I can barely get out of the elevator with the helicopters flying above you. But pretty cool experience

TheBaxes

Maybe Superhot would be a better demo than something that could make them fall and break the device.

yahboioioioi

I usually start my friends off with beat saber, let them play a few songs and then switch them to superhot until they kill the battery. From there, it’s just talking about how cool the oculus and how they want one.

BluSkyler

Lol! Yes, I suppose. I’ve had tons of folks try it and none of them have come remotely close to behaving like some of the people in those fail videos. The most they have done is noped out of it and took the headset off laughing about how scared they actually got when they saw the plank. But OP, you do have to make sure you clear a good size area and explain the device to them before they put it on. And let them know it’s always fine to close their eyes or just take it off if things get too intense in any experience.

TeamRedundancyTeam

It's weird because I'm the same way but I can't get people to be interested in even trying it. Most of my family who has tried it will only do it for a few minutes, absolutely convinced they will vomit out their eyes from motion sickness, and they don't go in open minded at all. They're also terrible at listening to instructions so they don't learn the simplest of controls.. So while we think it's the coolest experience, I literally can't get anyone I know to give it a real shot or show any real interest in it.

iBeelz

There are anime strip clubs on VRChat. My new favorite way to work out lol. Seriously tho, even the 360 videos are amazing. You feel like you’re actually in them.. flying over mountains or diving in the ocean. Amazing stuff

[deleted]

360 videos alone are enough to sell someone on this. I put this on my five year old and had her swimming with turtles.

gdodd12

Where do you find these videos?

KKlear

vrporn.com

twomilliondicks

Oculus tv app, youtube

tiddles451

DeoVR has recently started expanding their library hugely and supporting external creators, although its still in its early days and they havent added a favourite button yet. Personally I enjoyed the US wide open scenery ones about red woods and natural arches. It's worth upping the bandwidth to max quality to get the most impact and feel as if you're actually there in person.

merchantoffunnies

Lol. Did the same thing. Got the same responses. Hahah.

teddybear082

Make sure you tell them about the referral deal so you and them both get some free games!

ZoddImmortal

You don't really put it in. You click on the link and it will ask you to sign in with Facebook to accept. Then you download the Oculus app on your phone and do the Quest setup. It will automatically apply when you login there, using the same facebook.

googi14

This is me. Except, since Quest 1 in 2019. And now Quest 2

Schweizsvensk

ah a man of culture

Adam_n_ali

I got my 3 best friends to buy into VR, i wanted them to play shooters with me (Pavlov, Contractors, Hyper Dash) You know what they *actually* ended up liking the most? PokerStarsVR. Just hanging out at a table playing blackjack with virtual cigars and beer. Honorable mentions to RecRoom (Rise of the JumboTron), and Cook Out! A Sandwich tale. I never would have guessed lol.

[deleted]

PokerStars is the shit.

threecatsdancing

Roulette is out!!

CollegeMiddle6841

They have one hell of a good referral until end of DEC, $60 in store credit for both people, plus chance 2 win 10K!

MorGlaKil

I got mine in March and now several of my friends have bought one thanks to my influence.

Sabbathius

Yup. I can count on one hand the number of times that gaming tech blew my mind. Switching from a ZX Spectrum to a x286 PC was one. Getting the first mouse was second. Getting the first dedicated 3D video card was third. And VR was the fourth. Just today I fired up Dying Light in VR mode (very basic, borderline unplayable), and even that is so completely amazing and game-changing that I don't know how people can still debate this. VR is completely and utterly awesome. Biggest issue with VR is that it's still lacking high quality, full-length, feature-complete games. When Sony sells a new Playstation, when Nintendo sells Switch, etc., there's always some amazing games to go with it. In VR, this really isn't a thing yet, with a few very rare exceptions. You also can't sell people on VR by showing them a picture or a video, VR is a feeling, it has to be experienced. And of course the pandemic fucked that up. Oculus could have had a demo station in every mall, but the way things are headed that won't be possible for a very long time.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Yeah, that’s the thing. Experiencing it today could never have been described to someone in a way that represents what it feels like. What VR platformers need is a kickass, revolutionary marketing campaign tailored at non-hardcore gamers, because when you watch the game trailers on YouTube on your computer, they seem underwhelming — the graphics look like they’re from years ago. Then you put it on and it’s a whole different world. My girlfriend is absolutely not a video game person but she tried it today and was freaking out. She played through an entire mini golf course round and had a fantastic time.

willnotforget2

Hell yea. My wife now has my old quest 1 and we play table tennis and golf and contractors a few times a week. It has app sharing, so we only need to buy one copy! Cheers man!

RaptorSlaps

All it really needs at this point is slightly better graphics which will probably come as new games are released for the quest 2 and slightly better battery life which you can just get a portable charger to fix that issue. My only complaint is that it is kind of hard to get comfortable with glasses on, but I could probably fix that with a better strap. To anyone considering buying one of these: DO IT! 128GB of storage will be enough for a long time and their is cloud saving so you can rotate games! It’s a lot more comfortable to play standing than it is to play in the gremlin position I end up in when I’m on my Xbox.

SillyMilk7

You can get good prescription lenses that snap in the Oculus for about $75 you just have to send your prescription. The most recommended are an outfit out of Hong Kong and and another company out of Germany that I used. I have astigmatism and I'm pretty nearsighted. It also has the benefit of protecting the lenses in the Oculus which apparently can get scratched relatively easy.

Writhyn

I've thought about this, but how quick is the change out? If I want to let someone else try the set, how much effort is it to revert to the normal lenses?

Jackback1

Did you get walk about mini-golf? That game is a blast and a steal for how cheap it is. 9 free 18-hole courses.

SpindlySquash

The Japanese ad for RE4 is probably the best representation of what VR feels like https://youtu.be/Rv0nAHRtBDw

GaaraSama83

Their First Steps video is also not bad (of course the graphics aren't even close to being this good). The making of this video is also very interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60yP8f5E-B4

carolinacasper

Dude! We have almost the exact same experience with gaming tech.

nicetriangle

I just realized today that VR is making me feel the same way I did when I first got on the internet in the 90s. It just felt like unlimited possibility and everything was raw and yet to be determined. A new Wild West of learning, socialization, creativity. I knew immediately that it was going to be HUGE and would majorly change society. That’s how I feel using VR now. And these are the only two times I’ve felt this in my life.

GaaraSama83

Having the same feeling but I think for mass adaption purposes and mainstream appeal AR might be even more interesting.

bacon_jews

Don't miss out on immersive media content - Oculus funds a lot of creators to make their platform stand out, and it shows: OculusTV has some great 180/360' videos - particularly the David Attenborough's short documentaries (Kingdom of Plants, MicroMonsters, First Life). Also download "VR Animation Player" from the store(it's free), then search for: ["Tales from Soda Island"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKOdRk9pGsw ) 5 chapters: * Multiverse Bakery * Neon Jungle * Quantum Race * The Golden Record * School Trip And some really good animations from other creators: * NightMara Ep1 * Rebels * _Hello * Remedy 3D animations in VR is something else.. Easily one of the best things on Quest! Particularly "The Golden Record" is so goddamn good, I watched it at least 10 times (and posted 100 more times urging others to watch it). I can only imagine where this tech will get within next 5-10 years with some big budget productions.. Very exciting. Welcome to the cult and enjoy VR!

Nice-Violinist-6395

Ah, this is great. Honestly one of the things I’m most excited about is seeing 3D movies. I always loved 3D, I’m gonna start with Mad Max Fury Road and then get into the documentaries. I’m flying home for Christmas in a few weeks and I’m actually excited to watch stuff on the plane lol. I may look a bit stupid but I don’t care at all. My dad is going to wig out when he sees this

bacon_jews

3D movies are much better in VR, since it doesn't have drawbacks of glasses you get in cinema. And Fury Road is a good choice, I watched it a while back and it was great experience. Download BigScreen - it's a free app where you can watch movies in a huge cinema, also rent them. oh and almost forgot >!(watch Golden Record)!<

drakfyre

Edit: Most of this is redundant info from what /u/bacon_jews said, sorry! Ooooh, these aren't Hollywood movies... but you should really check out the Soda Island series on OculusTV. To find these in OculusTV, you'll need the free [VR Animation Player](https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/2515021945210953/) installed. Search for: The Multiverse Bakery The Neon Jungle The Quantum Race The Golden Record The first three are a trillogy of animations, the last one is stand-alone. If you only have time/energy to check out one, check out The Golden Record. If you like them please lemme know; I feel like they are a window into a new generation of passive virtual content. And they are very beautiful. Edit: Ugh I'm an idiot, above in the comment chain this is literally what was already suggested hahahaha. Just consider this an upvote/extra information about how to get setup in case VR Animation Player isn't installed.

[deleted]

I don’t think you need any player anymore, I was able to watch all these just by searching for their name in the store. They installed and played just like any other app or media.

drakfyre

It’s sometimes a problem if folks have factory reset, or if they deleted it when cleaning up space. I mention it just in case, as it drove me crazy when troubleshooting haha. Sorry if it’s redundant.

KKlear

Into the Spiderverse is a good one too, especially if you missed the 3d version in theatres.

Havarti_Bro

Multiverse Bakery blew my mind so hard, it was incredible to stumble upon. The other animations by Studio Syro are amazing as well, highly recommend.

madpropz

That's kinda how I feel as well. VR is the biggest thing to happen in our lifetime tbh, people don't even realize. You can create a world without any earthly limitations, and be INSIDE it. It doesn't get much better than that.

ah1887

This post was such a joy to read. I had a similar experience. Never really a gamer, discovered VR just before the pandemic and still can't get over it. Here's a guide to the Quest I've shared with some friends of mine. Hope it helps! \------------- As far as games go, definitely take advantage of the free demos available on the Oculus Store. For one, it doesn't cost you anything. For another, it will help you learn what you enjoy before you sink money into paid games. I know you have **Beat Saber** already—that's a classic and one of the best. Hard to beat it as an introductory game for people new to VR as well. Another really popular one is **Super Hot**, which is based on a really cool concept of time only moving when you do. Other demos include **Space Pirate Trainer** (space shooter), **Sports Scramble** (wacky tennis), **Creed** (boxing), and **Journey of the Gods** (a Zelda-like game, but be careful with that one until you get your VR legs). If you decide you are ready to move on to paid games, there's an almost endless selection depending on your interests, so I'll highlight a bunch of them. There are a number of relatively cheap ones that are a steal: The top game in that category is **Thrill of the Fight** ($10), which is a boxing simulator and will give some of the best cardio you've ever experienced. It will get you sweating and gasping for breath, no joke. Another great one is **Blaston** ($10), which is another surprisingly good workout. You and your opponent face off across from each other and use all sorts of wacky weapons to fire at each other while physically dodging out of the way of the other's bullets. In a totally different category, I recommend **Wander** ($10), which lets you do Google Street View in VR, visiting and touring any place in the world covered by Street View! If you like puzzles, I've heard good things about **Cubism** ($10), a 3D puzzle game that takes advantage of the Quest's handtracking, and even more good things about **Puzzle Places** ($15), which is a really cool mix of a traditional jigsaw puzzle, 3D, and photorealistic miniatures of real places. All of these games also have the advantage of being very accessible, either relying on real-world movement or no significant movement at all, so they're great for people new to VR. If you are open to first-person shooter (FPS) games, there are a couple that I highly recommend and that are great social experiences with friends. The number one game I recommend is **Hyper Dash** ($20), which is more of an arena-style shooter with a bunch of different maps and game modes. I play competitively with my brothers and it's by far my favorite game on the Quest. The other FPS is **Population: ONE** ($30). It's a battle royale game with a bit of a Fortnite feel to it. You can build, climb (literally anything), and fly, and you're teamed up with a squad, scavenging for weapons and ammo on a huge map. It's a lot of fun. One of the coolest things about VR is getting to do things you enjoy doing but rarely do or that you’d enjoy doing but have never done. There are some amazing simulation games, like **Thrill of the Fight** (boxing), which I mentioned above. I also recommend **Eleven Table Tennis** ($20, ping pong), **Golf+** ($20, driving range, putt-putt, and full courses), or **Walkabout Mini Golf** ($15, putt-putt). If you like fishing, **Real VR Fishing** ($20) is pretty amazing. Great graphics, and you can watch YouTube videos or listen to music while you fish. I've spent a little too much time trying out various games the last few years, so here's a list of some other ones I think are great, that you may want to check out: * **Resident Evil 4** ($40) * The classic game, ported beautifully to VR. Took me like a month to play through it in short chunks and loved it. This one is definitely worth the high sticker price. * **Pistol Whip** ($30) * A rhythm-based musical shooter with a lot of different content, including some cool campaigns with awesome boss battles. * **Swarm** ($25) * A fast-paced really fun game. Basically Spider-Man with guns. * **A Fisherman's Tale** ($15) * A beautiful puzzle story, one of my favorite VR experiences ever. One moment in that game blew my mind and I still think about it all the time. * **Myst** ($30) * If you played Myst on PC, this is a very accurate recreation of the game in VR, which was a very nostalgic and cool experience. * **Catan VR** ($15) * Exactly what it sounds like, Settlers of Catan in VR! * **Demeo** ($30) * A dungeon crawler, D&D-type game where you can zoom in and out of the board, almost feeling like you're "in the action." Very fun with other people. * **Cook-Out** ($20) * A zany but great collaborative game, where the players all work in the kitchen trying to build sandwiches for impatient customers. Really fun with friends. * **Dash Dash World** ($25) * Basically Mario Kart in virtual reality. Dangerous for motion sickness, though, so I'd recommend building up to it slowly. Finally, if you are a Star Wars fan, the three episodes of **Vader Immortal** are each $10 and a great experience. Each one also has a Jedi Dojo, where you wield lightsabers, blasters, and use the force. It's incredibly cool if you've always wanted to be a Jedi. Most people get more out of the dojos than the actual narrative game. There is also **Star Wars: Tales at the Galaxy's Edge** ($25), which I haven't tried but looks cool too.

On that note: Smash Drums. Quite new and kinda similar i guess (haven´t played Ragnarock though) Demo is available in Applab.

looniedreadful

Great list.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Great recommendations. Thanks! UPDATE: I just bought most of your recommendations. This is great. My girlfriend is as obsessed as I am.

OddArmory

I don’t know if you want game recommendations but I really enjoyed the Room, Red Matter, Real VR Fishing and Pistol Whip. There are some fun free games that you can download from side quest.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Absolutely! After playing a few levels of Vader Immortal I immediately downloaded more games than I’ll be able to play in a month, but Pistol Whip and The Room are next on my list.

ah1887

Awesome! Try the 2089 campaign in Pistol Whip (on easy, it's still hard). The boss battle at the end of that was one of the coolest things I've ever done.

Maskatron

I've had my quest for almost 10 months and only just got Pistol Whip on Black Friday. Now I'm playing it every day! I second Real VR Fishing. It's the most immersive game that I've found so far. Once you get used to the controls you can turn off the video game type UI and it's even more like the real thing. It's a nice change-up from the more frenetic games. Another good relaxing game is Puzzling Places. 3D puzzles of varying difficulty; I've worked through them all twice now.

[deleted]

This made me smile, welcome to the wonderful world of VR, you're never too old to join :P Here is some games I recommend. * Pavlov is like a simple, easy to play and pickup general multiplayer shooter. * Contractors is like Call of Duty, in that it has class systems and focuses more on PVP and tactics than running and gunning. * Onward is a great milsim, very realistic and my personal favorite. * Population One is a Battle Royale in VR, think PUBG but with wingsuits and the ability to climb anything! * Zero Caliber VR is a GREAT single-player and co-op FPS with awesome gun controls and lots of levels in it's storyline. * Arizona Sunshine is another single-player, co-op shooter, but this one is about Zombies! * Dead Effect is a RPG shooter that takes place in space, heavily inspired by DOOM 3. It has fantastic visuals and a lengthy campaign with LOTs of weapons and upgrades. It's a port of the free mobile/PC game to VR. * Thrill of the Fight is an amazing, realistic boxing sim that will have you sweating your head off. * Blade and Sorcery is a melee combat based game, based in midevil times. It's a high budget title, a few bugs but I expect it to get a lot better over time. * Gladius is a super violent hack and slash, based in roman times where you play as a gladiator. It's my personal favorite combat style game. It's also in early development made by a single person, support the dev with a nice comment if you play it :) * BeatSaber is usually everyone's go-to first time VR game. It's easy to pickup and play and has you slicing cubes to rhythm and music. * Pistol Whip is similar to BeatSaber, but it has you shooting things instead. John Wick simulator :P * Medal of Honor is probably one of the best single-player games out right now and it's a WW2 shooter that also has multiplayer. It's campaign is worth it alone, my first playthrough was around 15 hours. * Resident Evil 4 is a great game, a port of the classic to VR. You have to know what this game is, even if you've been under a rock! * SUPERHOT is a time-game, the true John Wick Simulator. It has you ducking, dodging, shooting and throwing things at enemies that only move when you do. It also has a really cool main menu with a bunch of hidden easter eggs. * and finally you mentioned The Walking Dead, which is what I consider one of the best VR games made. It's a fantastic RPG, melee, shooter and survival sim with a great story. The campaign is very long, lasting hours with new game plus options available. There is far too many to mention, I recommend taking a few hours and scouring YouTube videos :) I recommend BeardoBenjo [https://www.youtube.com/c/BeardoBenjo](https://www.youtube.com/c/BeardoBenjo) Have fun, enjoy VR!

guruguys

How could you leave Echo VR of this list, once of the best VR has to offer, and its free! :)

Nice-Violinist-6395

Just downloaded it!

DJCAT09

Prepare for motion sickness!

nasty_napkin

Yeah, OP if you haven't heard already--it takes a while to get "VR legs". But the motion sickness goes away after you get used to playing games that have movement in them. You can start by putting on "comfort" settings and playing for shorter periods of time. Later on, you'll be able to play for hours without any special settings. It just takes time to get used to it

Carpe_DMT

Also, app lab is a treasure trove of free stuff but you gotta search for it in store by its full name. Alternately you can use side quest to search all the listings and apply them to your oculus account, no sideloading necessary. Check out Tea For God, gorilla tag, Pavlov and mad dog 2021.

SCP_Y4ND3R3_DDLC_Fan

If you play it, you should give your guardian boundary a good foot from the wall I’ve punched my TV twice

TrefoilHat

Be aware that almost every game on this list is a shooter or combat experience (except TotF and BS), and the library is much deeper than just that - important to remember for people new to VR or not experienced gamers. A tactical mil-sim may not be be first place to start. Great alternative games to mention include Walkabout Mini Golf, Golf+, Eleven Table Tennis, Tetris Effect, I Expect You To Die, Moss, Shadow Point, Red Matter, and Fisherman's Tale.

bradp36

I just bought Golf+ yesterday. It's an absolute must if you're a golfer. It's absolutely crazy! Only drawback is the lack of courses. Comes with one course and there is another one you can purchase separately and one more coming in the future.

no6969el

Walk about mini golf is like the most amount of fun I've ever had in a mini golfing game

VR_IS_DEAD

I recommend getting Golf 5 eClub instead. I've played many VR golf games and the gameplay is good enough but more importantly you'll be blown away by how good it looks for a standalone game.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Thank you!!! I’m gonna check all these out. What a great afternoon lol

MrWeirdoFace

Just a tip. If you find you bought a game and immediately regret it, if you played less than 2 hours and under 2 weeks whichever came first) can technically return it through the phone app. I wouldn't abused the hell out of that but I think I've did like three a month at one point without issue.

[deleted]

I also reread this, apparently my favorite genre is shooters haha.

CollegeMiddle6841

Everyone needs to try SUPERHOT, I think its what people imagine VR will be like LOL

Adam_n_ali

Gladius is lowkey a fitness game lol

BluSkyler

Wow, this made my day! It’s always so cool when folks are introduced to real VR for the first time. So many cool experiences on the way. Beyond games there are exercise apps, remote work apps, movies, concerts….enjoy the brave new world. Try Walkabout Minigolf with a friend and you will never look back;)

RaptorSlaps

Try some meditations and hypnosis!!!

teddybear082

Felt the same way 2 years ago and there are many moments I still do! Will always remember how First Steps made me feel: “guys! guys! There’s a block here and I can actually pick it up!! And I can throw it too!” Yet someone recently told me last year their company got them a Quest 2 for free as a gift and they had no idea where it was - that it must have been lying in a closet somewhere. So crazy but there is definitely a huge divide between the 100 percent in and out crowds.

[deleted]

Haha, nice! Enjoy your first hit. I totally get what you mean. This is the fulfillment of everything that movies, books, games and so much art has tried to do for thousands of years. So much effort spent trying to draw you into the world, to give you a new reality, even just for a moment. With VR, boom, you’re there. Just like flipping a switch. Over time you will get used to it a bit. It’s still amazing, but there’s a lot of potential still in the future with better hardware, more detailed control and better content. We are in the n64 days but in 10 years this is going to knock our socks off all over again. If you really want to blow your mind about what’s truly possible, try Eleven Table Tennis.

RaptorSlaps

I spent 6 hours playing Eleven Table Tennis yesterday. I will clock 6 more in tomorrow. Eleven Table Tennis is love, Eleven Table Tennis is life.

barnadi

You're playing with the regular controllers? I saw you can buy ones that look like a racquet and you can put the Oculus controllers in them.

samskuantch

Eleven table tennis is SO GOOD. My husband and I play together and we can't get over how fun and realistic it is. I convinced him to try it after seeing so many people on here saying good things about it, and I'm glad he did! It's just a really fun game.

threecatsdancing

That google art application is really cool Pokerstars has probably taken the most of my time after that first 2-3 weeks of HOLY SHIT wore off.

lo_gravity

I just got mine a month ago! I had been getting burnt out on traditional pc/console gaming and after trying a friend's quest 2, I decided to jump in. It's been a great experience. Last night I played custom songs on beat saber for 2 hours straight. That's my exercise now. Getting consistently better at beat saber is the most satisfying thing I have experienced in gaming since the glory days of Halo.

guruguys

So hard to describe modern VR to those who haven't tried, but it certainly sells itself once its experienced.

ronton

Got mine for Christmas a year ago and the feeling still hasn’t worn off. It’s so damn cool.

just_a_pleb

I've had mine for about a year now, I finally took it over to my mom's house an showed my step dad an he was completely blown away with it, he used to play games with his brother that passed away about 10 years ago, since then he hasn't played any games. Well after him trying the headset out he was in awe of how amazing it looked an what it could do. The next day he asked me to bring over the headset an let him try some more games out. His birthday was the following week, so I went to best buy an bought him the 299$ model and I surprised him with it for his birthday. That was about a month ago now an he's been spending all kinds of time in the headset, playing golf online every day after work is our new routine. While it was kind of a pricey Bday gift I know how much he's enjoying it. Plus watching a 65 year old man get so excited about new tech is kind of heart warming. He's been taking it to show all his friends an try to get them into VR as well. I'd say that was money well spent.

the2belo

Oooooooooh if you think the Quest 2 blows your mind *now*, just wait until you really get bit by the bug and you get a nice powerful gaming PC and set up Oculus Link. Now the PC is doing all the dirty work instead of the onboard processor, and things get jaw-dropping in comparison. Then blah blah blah blah **HOLY S&%@ I'M LITERALLY WALKING AROUND IN THE *TITANIC* FIRST CLASS RESTAURANT AND I CAN ALMOST REACH OUT AND PICK UP THE NAPKINS**. Oh, oh, and also, load up Google Earth VR and hover over the Rocky Mountains at 10,000 feet and *you feel like GOD HIMSELF*. I'm a 51-year-old schlump who similarly got bored of regular PC games bought a Quest 2 a week ago. I'm still at this "giddy" stage myself. Trust me, this is just the beginning.

Namekuseijon

yes, VR is a damn mind-blowing experience by itself. I've been wondering the same for the past 4 years into it... Unfortunately the Quest is for whatever reasons being sold as a toy to little kids more than anything else, although it's so much more than just a VR games console...

deathrock33

Ditto to everything you wrote here. It’s frickin amazing. I loved Resident Evil 4 and play Pokerstars on the daily. Walkabout Mini Golf is way fun too. Myst blew my mind into 1000 pieces too!!

Senor_shrimp

If possible (PCVR; linked to a capable PC) Half Life Alyx is life changing. Also sim racing.

Time_Resolution_2436

Yup. I'm always seeing people saying VR isn't what depicted in movies/TV, and that people returned their headset because the games "look bad".... Like are they not using the same headset as me..???

Gregasy

Loved reading this, because your experience with VR is pretty similar to mine. I grew out of games and just couldn't enjoy them anymore. I loved the idea behind them (and memories of how I was enjoying them when I was younger), but they just didn't hold my attention for more then 10 minutes anymore. VR though... it just seemed such a natural progression for games. And I'm finally able to enjoy them again. But not just games, VR is so much more. Even after years of owning VR, it's still just as exciting as before. If anything, it's getting more exciting each year as VR is finally entering mainstream. The only reason I see, why VR is not even bigger thing yet, is bulky form factor and weight. Not everyone is enthusiastic enough to wear quite heavy box on his/her face. Good thing is, we'll finally get first smaller and lighter goggles next year. As for games, you must try MOSS. It's amazing. Also, SuperHot, The Room VR, Shadow Point, Red Matter, Eleven Table Tennis, Drop Dead, Art Plunge... that's just a start. And do yourself a favour and get free VR Animation Player app and watch Tales from Soda Island animated series (as well as other animated illustrations and movies). It's amazing. Also, Oculus TV has an impressive vr series with David Attenborough "Micro monsters" (be sure to download it for the best quality).

GaaraSama83

Yeah, I'm highly anticipating the new micro OLED + pancake lens headsets.

mmfq-death

So first, the Quest 2 is an incredible device. It can do everything well and has a big name behind it. However, I’ll give you some insight as to why people aren’t over the moon about it. 1. VR is a pretty niche and tight-knit community. Especially at first. Oculus basically pioneered VR into business. The Rift was a HUGE leap forward for VR as we know it today. Oculus was eventually bought by Facebook. They had originally promised that Oculus would remain itself under their acquisition. However, when the Quest 2 came out, they broke that promise. They forced users to use a connected Facebook account for no reason and it continues to cause issues on it to this day. 2. While the Quest is fantastic, if you ever get the chance, try out a Valve Index. The quest is solid. Especially connected to a PC with AirLink for wireless and PC quality graphics. However, the Index (albeit $700 more expensive) is another immense leap forward. It has a crazy big FOV, much higher resolution, and impeccable tracking with probably the best controllers on the market. So compared to that, the Quest 2 isn’t a breakthrough to the die-hard early adopter crowd. 3. For the average person, the quest 2 out of the box is a solid headset at a great price. However, to get a good experience, you have to spend a bit more. For starters, I’d never use mine, nor recommend the Quest 2 without an alternative head strap or face shield. Those 2 are a must for me. The strap is terrible and puts all of the force on your face. It’s uncomfortable and feels bad. The faceplate is made of a foam that ABSORBS sweat in a way that just feels gross. After 20 minutes, it’s unusable for me. For that reason, you need to buy the headset and then spend a minimum of another $100 on accessories. Still not bad, but it is a misnomer to tell people “hey $300 for a mind boggling experience.” More like $400 minimum. 4. Without a PC, it’s still pretty good, but it’s MILES better with one. You can play Quest VR, but you should play PCVR with the Quest. With all that said, I love my Quest 2. It’s a fantastic device at a fantastic price. I’d recommend it to anyone. I do however understand the ins-and-outs of why and what people are complaining about and why it’s not toted as the next sliced bread. It’s incredible for sure, but there are better versions out there and it has its own issues. Don’t let any of this detract from your good time and I hope I wasn’t a Debby downer. Just trying to explain. Also, as for recommendations: - Boneworks: Fantastic VR free-for-all messing around type game. Do whatever you want. It’s a ton of fun. - Superhot VR: Shooter where the world only continues moving while you move. A fun puzzle shooter. - Blade and Sorcery: RPG-like combat game. - Lone Echo 1/2: Full Story based game with an incredible gameplay experience. Easily one of the best VR games to exist in general. - Beat Saber: Do I even need to explain? Everyone loves it for a reason.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Thanks! Yeah I’m getting another head strap today or tomorrow lol.

Biomorpheus

Few years back I did some game/software presentations and promotion work with VR on behalf of our company and every single event I participated it was the same story: people passing by, not interested to try it out no matter how you presented it. Then occasionally you could talk someone into trying it out and the moment they put the headset on and launched a game, it was amazing. The joy of discovery man; it was so beautiful to see the pure emotions, physical reactions and uncontrollable laughter. Then that smile after they took the headset off - kids, mothers, teens, grandpas - so cute running up to their group of friends and family, going "you've got to try it, it's amazing!". Usually after one had tried, the rest wanted to try, until they all left giddy with a new experience. Then the silent headshakes loomed in again, and I was back to the business of trying to offer people a chance to experience something new; the reluctance was odd to me, 'cause I wasn't even trying to get your money. But yeah, many of you put it well: it's definitely a personal experience and extremely hard to describe to others - even if you have a screen to show what the player sees, it is not the same. I really enjoyed the promotion work then, it was so much fun to give someone that experience, and really hope to see the technology develope. So happy that OP had this reaction, reminds me of some good times: thanks for sharing!

GibbonMind2169

Yeah people are weird with new technology; gonna go on a bit of an off topic tangent I brought a dry herb vaporizer for weed to a party (quite literally the best one on the market, the future of smoking weed as it were) and everybody was like ehhh wat is that and then I'd tell them and they'd be like ooh uhhh okay... I'd let them use it and they'd barely hit it and hand it back like they were scared of it. Same can be said with my oculus, I have friends over and you'd think they'd at least put the quest on to see what VR looks like but they're just like no no I'm good It took my friend like 2 months of us hanging out to try the quest 2 and then it blew his mind the second he tried it I mean hey I guess at least I don't have to worry about people breaking my shit

TastyTheDog

Well said. I also grew disaffected with flat games, just recycling the same basic gameplay generation after generation. My memories of things I've done in VR are like actual memories, not images of me sitting in my house staring at a TV. It's a whole other thing. I'd recommend: The Climb 2, Real VR Fishing, Song In The Smoke, Superhot, Eleven Table Tennis, Phantom: Covert Ops, Carve Snowboarding, Walkabout Minigolf, Mare, The Room VR, Moss

cadwal

Your post inspired me to take the plunge. Thank you for sharing.

Puiucs

just keep your expectation in check. this is still relatively new tech :)

VR_IS_DEAD

Just got mine too. I really recommend Golf 5 eClub. Hurry because it's on sale only today!

Crafty-Translator-26

You have to keep in mind that like everything in life it’s a spectrum some people on the high end will love vr and enjoy for years like us “vr enthusiasts” some will try the best vr headsets with rtx 3090 and AAA graphics game and still be left unsatisfied,

CollegeMiddle6841

HELL YEAH! Welcome home! Have you tried BEAT SABER yet? I have been gaming since the early 80s and when I played BEAT SABER for the first time I got chills, hair stood on back of neck, and I shed multiple tears. Have you downloaded all the free stuff? You need to try FIRST STEPS then FIRST CONTACT, both are free. SO HAPPY 2 have you! It feels freaky because this XMAS is when VR finally hits mainstream.....HAVE YOU PLAYED RESIDENT EVIL YET? You wont believe it!

Nice-Violinist-6395

Thanks!! I’ll definitely check out those two especially if they’re free!

_caffeinatedcoffee_

Mustve been some big ass wiplash going from a 360 to a vr

sphks

> It’s an absolutely profound experience, a total fulfillment of an impossible childhood fantasy Now play HalfLife and Quake 2 on it

JizmoTeixeira

Golf+

elephantviagra

I mean yeah...when you first experience VR it's fucking amazing. I've had the Vive since it first came out and while I still enjoy playing my Quest every now and then, the amazingness has worn off. Enjoy it while it lasts.

roberthonker

Same here kinda. I still enjoy VR way more than flat gaming pound for pound, but I've run out of good games that I really want to play.

Saamurraii

You got to try echo vr when you're ready for it, it's free and I had the same reaction as you did with star wars

wordyplayer

So true. Even after 5 years (PSVR, Rift, Quest) I still play every day. Amazing as you say

[deleted]

Since everyone has already commented on most of the other parts of your post, I just wanted to drop by with a little fun fact for you. You say "Not that VR existed back then" but actually it did. Nintendo's Virtual Boy (the closest thing to what we have now) came out in 1995. Similar devices date all the way back to 1978

MrWeirdoFace

I hesitated to call Virtual Boy VR, even at the time, but I certainly did try a real VR machine in a museum a couple times in the 90s. Was pretty crude but got me daydreaming about it. When the kickstarter for the Oculus Rift succeeded I started paying very close attention and bought a CV1 one within a couple months of its release. I had briefly bought myself a Google cardboard headset before this and thought it was pretty cool but knew we were just scratching the surface there. Either way 5ish years later I'm still all in.

gdodd12

I just played Propagation VR...holy shit...I was legit sweating and my heart rate was really going. I was actually scared. The immersion is incredible.

BreadDaddyLenin

My biggest recommendations: Resident Evil 4; an incredible VR version of an already great game. Pavlov; just search Pavlov Shack and it should pop up under app lab, it’s free right now and a good free multiplayer shooter. Contractors is great too, another awesome multiplayer shooter that just a got a graphics upgrade for Quest 2. HYPERDASH. Hyperdash was my first VR experience and it also blew my mind. It’s also a multiplayer game so if these aren’t your thing then just get Resident Evil.

[deleted]

I have a few of my mates on board with the Quest 2. They all say flat screen gaming is of no interest to them now. OP if you get a chance get a gaming PC and try Half Life Alyx. It is a masterpiece.

ender9492

Welcome. It's a brave new world!

HubRumDub

You don’t need a computer but it’s way better with a computer

InhaleExplode

Told this story before on a different thread, but my brother invited me over to play his oculus rift (older version that had cables and cameras) it was my first time ever trying VR and it absolutely blew my mind (we were playing superhot) eventually when it was his turn to play again, i had jumped online and bought a quest for myself before i even got a second try at the rift. 5 minutes and i was so hooked i bought my own, i love it haha

lman777

I hear variations on this story all the time, and it's my story too! My close friend and former college roommate got a Rift S for Christmas last year from his brother. He didn't have a PC so he asked to bring it to my place to check it out because he knew I had a decent-ish PC. We tried it out, it was pretty cool, I tried some Beat Saber and Epic Rollercoasters. It was way better than I expected but I didn't quite get it because the experiences probably weren't the most mind blowing. About a month later he came back over, this time with a Quest 2 (he had traded in the Rift S). This time I got to try Population One and Super Hot. Something about the completely wireless experience playing Super Hot, with no PC, just clicked for me. Then trying Pop One and actually playing with other people, I don't know, the social experience, with spatial audio particular was so much more than I realized was possible. I realized "good VR is actually here, not just a future thing." I immediately ordered one on Amazon after this experience.

Maveric408

They've really come a very long way with the tech in such a short amount of time. The Quest 2 is also my first foray into VR and it's given me a much better perspective on how to play and consume media. I've even built a gaming PC specifically so that I can experience PCVR and even that has given me a whole new perspective on gaming in general to the point where I don't even want to play any other console outside of my Switch. Now that I have it, I want to try even more headsets. I recently got a Rift S from my friend for helping his girlfriend out for her own karaoke streams. So far, I'm understanding so much more on the PCVR side now. Both headsets now have given me so many great experiences. My next goal is to save up enough cash to get Varjo's $2,000 headset because that's supposed to be way better. For the price, the Quest 2 is perfect to suit anyone's standard needs. So enjoy it to the fullest! I know I am!

DDClown502

After a while though I feel like people get kind of burnt out being in a vr headset. I’m hoping I’m wrong because I’m getting a quest 2 for Christmas and I’m pumped to start using it but I just hope I don’t get burnt out quickly using it. That’s all.

deftware

You won't get burned out if you don't have more important things to do.

AlluriaBeauty

I highly recommend Waltz of the Wizard.

Zaptruder

>How are gamers possibly “not satisfied” by the experience? A lot of people *really* fucking hate change. Like... their entire ego and world view are wrapped up in projections of how things are going to be and should be - and if something perturbs it, they're going to deny the hell out of it, no matter the costs or benefits. Also, VR can and will continue to get better, and normal console/desktop games, despite been on flat screens have more budget and more complex gameplay mechanics that still make them highly enjoyable; so a lot of people are just waiting around for it to get better before 'investing' (while also dropping hundreds to thousands on traditional setup peripherals like monitors, GPUs, KBs, mice, etc).

[deleted]

I’m sure you’re right and there are those who immediately dismiss this generation of VR as a gimmick or something. But, there are those gamers, like myself, who own a Quest and are still “not satisfied”. The points about change won’t apply to us, as we bought the hardware want it to be great. The reason gamers are “not satisfied” with VR headsets, like the Quest, is the games are lacking of depth, and ultimately reasons to invest your time. I have a Quest, but rarely pick it up cuz I have nothing to go back and work towards. Gamers are use to having big, open worlds and being able to freely roam/explore them. We level-up, collect, craft, etc… for hundreds of hours in a single game. We keep going back to complete missions, unlock things, grind to get gear to beat that damn boss, etc. VR games typically only scratch the surface of some of these aspects of gaming, and don’t even touch the surface of others. They are currently best for quick, casual experiences. Of course you could get more experience by linking to a PC… but, then the VR is really just a PC accessory, the judgement is no longer about the VR as a console. Again, I enjoy my Quest when I bring it out. A quick round of mini golf? Great!! Developing my kingdom and freeing its citizens from the evil overlords… better look at another system.

antleonardi01

VR is amazing, but unfortunately still has the problem that like 90% of the games are for casual players and very short. However there are a few gems (for people that have been nonstop gaming since they were born): Space Pirate Trainer -- Arcade shooter In Death - Dark Souls with a bow and arrow Until you Fall - Roguelight hack and slash with RPG build mechanics Phantom Covert Ops - Metal gear solid in a kayak Lies Beneath - A horror shooter with light puzzles Plenty of others of course, but (at least for me) fit into the category of something your girlfriend or dad would enjoy. Beatsaber and such.

[deleted]

I’m very much in the same position as you. I’ve been an avid gamer since I was 4 (42 years ago). VR is in the greatest state it has ever been in; which, in my opinion recently went from useless to pretty amazing. However, just like you said. The games leave much to be desired. They are short and simple experiences aimed towards “everyone”. I’m not sure whether that’s by limitation, design, or audience-targeting. But, even my favorite Quest games leave a lot to be desired, as far as depth goes. I haven’t tried any of the games you listed, beside In Death…. I’ll have to look them up. My most recent “favorite” is Swarm, which is an arcade shooter. The way you swing around on the floating anchors and fly around is done extremely well… it finally feels like there’s freedom of movement in a VR game.

jerbaws

Have u tried putting the controllers down yet lol

agnostic_universe

Get walkabout mini golf. Essential

RowenaGamble

For me, an old school gamer age 60 something, it was my son who introduced me to the world of VR. I was blown away. This is the kind of thing I used to say would be amazing but figured I’d not see it in my lifetime. When he told me the price of all his gear (there headset alone being close to $1000) I was bummed. But I googled and found the Quest. Best purchase I’ve made in a very long time. I highly recommend you check out Moss, Ven and Lucky’s Tale. For exercise, definitely Supernatural. You’ll have so much fun that you’ll not realize the workout you’re getting until you wake up sore the next day. And for me, as someone who suffers from PTSD, I recently discovered Maloka on AppLab stops my night terrors cold when I’m triggered. If you’ve not discovered https://www.applabdb.com/ go check it out. These are games in development for Oculus and, in many cases, free of charge.

ajdeLuca93

didnt read the whole thing lol but. BUY POPULATION ONE ITS THE LITERAL BEST

theriftreport

Those were my thoughts exactly even when I bought the first Oculus Prototype, the DK1. It was already apparent at that point that we were going to be in for something amazing and it just keeps getting better. Some people complain about the cost of games which again flabbergasts me as I'm able to have a full putting simulator (seriously, buy Walkabout Mini Golf and find some people to play with) for just a few dollars. Or maybe a bowling alley, Currently I have the MOST AMAZING SNOWBOARD SIMULATOR that beats anything any arcade could have ever dreamed up for me as a kid, and it cost me $25. This thing is stunning. Recently I got a gaming PC specifically to allow me to play some PC games in VR and its like the headset got an amazing upgrade....but still I go back to standalone and that is incredible too. So many amazing experiences, so many FREE amazing games and experiences (when you discover Applab you will be blown away by the amount of free or low cost software). This thing is nuts, to me it's like someone from the future sent back new technology, VR is such a leap. Welcome to this new world and the new amazing fun experiences that await you. The possibilities are endless. Last night I spend a couple of hours working extremely realistically on an oil painting, without needing to buy a canvas, paints or do any of the cleaning up afterwards :)

oculus

If this doesn't inspire you to get into headset today, we don't know what will.

moncikoma

VR is not for everyone, but if u look deep enough, there's a lot for everyone

MrBack1971

Was great to read about your positive experiences, I went through the same thing when I went to a VR afternoon at a VR place in Manchester. I went through a few games & my mind was blown. Ordered a quest1 after I left the place. Seeing Vader in front of you is soooooooo cool. Resi4 is a must, Moss is a sweet magical game, walkabout golf is great & super chilled, beat saber is boss, walking dead is a visceral extravaganza, check out Dr Beefs games, to actually be IN half life is incredible & well worth the setup time, in death unchained is well worth a look. Just a few suggestions :)

Solution: Buy one month membership to VRPorn Premium, immediately turn off recurring billing, now you have 30 days to download up to 20 videos a day (so a total of 600 videos) all for just $20. Best $20 I ever spent

Trap_Niqqa

too cheap? suit your self 🤷🏾‍♂️

fonejackerjk

Try googling vr smash. Good quality and free. Well....so a friend tells me anyway. 😳

Ahnzoog

Before you start sharing your new toy with your friends and family, I suggest you go to r/VRtoER. People get very wrapped up in it and forget that reality is a thing

LordBinz

Mate, the Quest 2 is the greatest invention that the Gaming world has seen since the original Playstation. Its so much better, so much cheaper, and so much more fun than any other type of gaming, only the most cynical of elitist haters actually would say anything bad about it. Sure, Facebook is a bit of a shitty company, but they made a great, cheap headset.

GibbonMind2169

Only the most blind faithful followers see no flaws in something I like the quest as much as the next dude but seriously? If you say anything bad about it you're an elitist hater? That sounds like some elitist attitude to me

Mataskarts

Eh the novelty will pass within a month or two and you'll realize the game library is miniscule, especially compared to the xbox 360 days, where I had over 150 games on my 360 :')

deftware

Xbox 360 was 7th generation gaming console after the market had been well established, of course it had tons of games. Imagine what VR will have to offer by its 7th generation.

[deleted]

Wait till you have enough fun to want to spend $$$$ on a gaming pc and a headset with larger fov

teethLessSanta

If you think gaming is good just wait till you try some vr por.. Workout. 😉

uncledefender

I'm still amazed every day. Currently being wow-ed by Song In The Smoke. There's a lot of suggestions on here but I'll add one more. I've been making a monthly free guide to Quest 2 which you'd probably get a lot out of. I made it for folk like you or me. Getting started, hints & tips, top games, films and animations, links to all. You can download it [here](https://gibbysguide.org/content/gibbysguidev11.pdf). There also a version for free games [here](https://gibbysguide.org/content/gibbysguidev12.pdf). New one will be out this Thursday. I'm almost jealous of you, you've got so many incredible moments to come. Enjoy!

fognar777

I bought the quest 2 about a month ago after hearing about it from a coworker. Vader immortal was and still is really the only game I've played so far. I've been going through all the dojo levels in order and only progressing once I get all the commendations, so it's taking me some time. Not everyone of my family members or friends who's tried it has been blown away by how awesome it is, but a lot of them are. I love either bringing it places to show people or inviting them over so they can experience it to see who catches the bug.

Light_and_Motion

you and me buddy, I have been on the VR train now for 5 years, since 2016 when the psvr came out. My mind was totally blown! then I had to upgrade to gaming PC and an oculus cv1, then a rift S and now I have a valve index and a Quest 1. I just finished a 1h session on Blade & Sorcery right now, and I'm drenched in sweat, it's such an easy way to do some light cardio for me. [did a video last week showing the joy of having body tracking on Blade & Sorcery,](https://youtu.be/cVT56l3WhwM) ( for your Quest 2 you can get Blade & Sorcery: Nomad ) Best experiences on the Quest 2 I think are: regular store buy. Walking dead Saints and sinners Resident evil 4 Super hot Beat Saber [Pavlov Shack ( like counter strike but in vr )](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HpcR-dEQgc) [sideloading games:](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoIXxIfRNTw) [Half life 1 in vr](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y8CxAYiHiw) [Quake 1 in vr](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znn0c8nLJYA) [Brutal Doom in VR](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So1AL3F697g)

thedon051586

Yeah bro. I'm a frequent "pancake" gamer and instead of getting the Series S last year, I got this. Have not been disappointed since! Ever after the bubble burst and getting the Series S for myself, I still find my way to this at least an hour or two a day. While I may only watch Netflix on the Xbox. It is just that, an experience. Oh and I haven't read too many of the comments but check out app lab, you'll find a fair amount of good content for mostly free or not much more for a pretty polished game/experience. The site I linked will direct you to the Oculus App Lab links. https://applabdb.com/all/pages/1

[deleted]

try out blade and sorcery. it really makes you *feeeeeel* like a psychopath

willnotforget2

I’ve been playing in VR for 5 yrs now. Since the PSVR came out. Those were my exact reactions. Five years later and I feel the same way. Welcome to the family

A_Raging_Semicolon

For all the potential issues, problems, and shortcomings if the Quest, the sheer accessibility it has brought to the world of VR has been transformative; until the release of the Quest 2, I thought it would be another 5 years or so before I could afford to try it out (especially given the recent cost of graphics cards and other PC parts.) Even with the graphical limitations on a standalone set, many games are downright breathtaking because of the immersion and beauty of art style surrounding you; puzzle games are an absolute delight: from classic style puzzles like Puzzling Places or Cubism, to escape rooms like The Room, I Expect You to Die 1&2, and my personal favorite, Shadow Point, to fast paced rhythm games like Beat Saber, Synth Riders, and Pistol Whip, to the plethora of FPS games, many of which have their own unique aspects to help differentiate them, like Swarm's mix of the-floor-is-lava and grappling, or Robo Recall's "throw gun at enemy to reload" mechanic, everything in VR ends up feeling like a blast.

willnotforget2

Also. Applab.games put it in a browser. Lots more stuff. My personal favorite is Ancient Dungeon. Such a kick ass game. And resident evil 4 VR is a trip

dedokta

Almost everyone I've stuck one on has instantly said "I have to get one of these!" and that's usually before I've had a chance to load a game for them.

nasty_napkin

Yep same here! I always liked the *idea* of video games but was never a "gamer" before VR. My last console was a PS2 but the Quest changed everything for me. I still have no interest in computer games or other consoles but I play VR all the time. I highly recommend Population One

mobfiction

This is so sweet to read dude, thanks for sharing :). I’ll never forget the first time I put on my headset. I just fucked around in the quest home and soaked it in. Welcome to the community. There are fantastic, insanely passionate people here. You’ll fit right in!

Fro_x_man

I remember my first time. That spark isn’t something I’ve had often. Glad to have you and all the other newcomers this holiday season. Welcome to the VR community, we’re glad to have you!

MrWeirdoFace

>all the criticisms seemed to be coming from hardcore gamers Yeah I don't really try to encourage any of my "hardcore" gamer friends to VR anymore. They've pretty much all dismissed it. Their loss. To be fair I was kind of like this about smartphones in the mid-2000s when they first showed up. Part of it was my general distaste for Apple, who initially led the charge with the iPhone, and part of it was I didn't think I needed all the extra features for a phone. I didn't really realize until a few years later that the phone part is really almost an afterthought, It's really just a mobile computer that happens to make phone calls as well. Once I realized that I was in. I suspect VR will be more like that for some people. Give it a few years and they'll be back. By the way if there's one bit of advice I think everyone should have, it's that the moment you feel nauseous or uncomfortable take off the headset immediately and give yourself about a half hour to an hour before you try again. If you don't it'll only get worse. Do not try to power through it. I suspect in the matter of days or weeks you will find VR legs if you have not already. The only thing I don't do in VR is smooth rotation. I'll either rotate myself physically or snap rotate, as that's generally the hardest motion to acclimate to. Fortunately most games give people the option to do either smooth or snap turning oh, so most people are covered in their needs.

Wait until they find out about VR Porn

Idk if anyone mentioned it yet but I HIGHLY recommend playing Demeo, especially if you wan find a dedicated group for it (it also has built in QuickPay if not) It's basically a tabletop dungeon game, it is quite possibly the most fun I've had so far in my 2-3 weeks of owning a quest 2 and getting into VR, so worth the money.

I got a quest after playing games for a while, especially with newer consoles, and it still blew my mind. I've tried psvr before but the quest is on a whole new level

Echo VR, PokerStars VR, the wizards are all pretty good. If you get Virtual Desktop and have a decent computer, you can stream games you would otherwise need to be connected to your computer to play!! Rick and Morty VR is pretty cool, but think it's pcvr. Definitely get The Walking Dead if you haven't yet!

As a person who's had a VR headset for a while, this is very fun to read.

I think Vader Immortal is one of the most mind blowing experiences to start with! The fact that everyone felt so tall and intimidating was what first caught me off guard 😆

I feel like VR has somewhat ruined regular video games for me? VR games are crazy immersive like you said OP, and just really fun overall. My favorite game so far has been Moss, a puzzle adventure game which features a mouse as the main character. The game design is really well done - in it you feel like a giant looking at these tiny little worlds and settings, which have awesome detail. I would highly recommend it if you're someone who enjoys puzzle games.

I can relate to this, got mine a couple of weeks ago, didn't know this is going to be so much fun.
