Thatās from the valley. We donāt all talk like that. Especially not in Northern California. Have you ever actually been here or did you get this from movies
I know. Just rassing ya!
From living up north, I do find that Northern Californians have definite opinions about SoCal. While SoCal doesnāt really have an opinion of up north. But then again, we do think weāre the center of the universe.
I grew up in So-Cal and went to college in No-Cal. First week on campus I learned about the intense rivalry between the two that neither I nor any of the other So-Cal kids previously knew existed.
You won't hear it. I grew up in Michigan and have a west coast/ great lakes accent now I guess after 15 years? It's weird... to people there I sound like I'm from the west coast but to people on the west coast I sound like a midwesterner lol.
I grew up in Orange County, was in high school there during the 80s. I was the first one up for a class presentation. I noticed people laughing now and again and couldn't understand why. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy behind me up at the chalk board. He was putting down strikes for every time I used the word "like" uselessly in my sentences.
It stopped me immediately and definitively from this very Southern California speaking pattern that originated there and has, I'm sorry to say, been transmitted to later generations. I now hear younger people constantly peppering their speech with "like". It's an empty filler word and not very attractive.
I'm not from California, but noticed that I use this word a lot in my life. I think I watched too many Hollywood movies growing up in the 80s and 90s. I'm in fact from the other side of the country.
I always felt more Californian than a Connecticut person. At least California how it was in the 80s - 2010ish. I'm not sure about now. It seems to have changed a lot. Then again, so has this area. Kids today are vastly different from what I've seen in my limited scope.
I think so? Then again, I had to bring something to my son at soccer camp once and good luck finding him! They all has uniforms on and looked the same!
Looks like my rat-bag crew.
Some are dead, some are still partying and driving a forklift at the warehouse, some are narrow minded, old codgers, some are still in great shape and take surf trips to Nicaragua and the Maldives

venice beach kevin, kori, eric and craig
Each and every one of them have more style and flow than you will ever experience. Itās just facts. Not too interested in playing along with your dad joke bullshit.
Do yourself a favor and figure out who those girls were and take in an eyeful of what they laid down. Youāll quickly recognize that my words are true. They are legends. You are not.
Itās not a large inconvenience to write a few sentences. Hope it wasnāt challenging to sift through all that verbiage.
You can figure out who they are all by your lonesome if you give a fuck.
Frankly, you arenāt a tough read, so where this is all trying to go has the nuance of your initial gimpy girls joke. Do yourself the favor of figuring this out for yourself and watch āem ride.
Went to high school in San Diego area in 70's. School had a designated "smoking area" and between smell of cigarettes one could also smell the marijuana. I'm sure other drug activity was going on but "pot" was the dominant aroma in the area.
Us so-cal guys started lighting up in our mid teens. I live in SF, but cool was smoking a j and knowing you lived in the part that made movies and people surfed. Center of the world for a while.
My dad makes san diego in the 70's sound like the perfect place & time to be a kid whenever I ask him about his childhood. Sooooo you could say I'm not even a little jealous
This is a staged photo op of a famous crew of professional skateboarders, subjects of several documentary and biopic movies, not the OP and their friends in a random Polaroid from growing up as the title says.
It just says growing up in the 70's. Peralta, Alva and Adams grew up in the 70's. If there was something about an old Polaroid I must have missed that.
Looks like Hanson meets the Allman Brothers.

30 minute long Mountain Bop
Hanson harmonies on āBlue Skyā and āRamblin Manā would be golden.

We have an accent!?!?
Like, sooo yeah
Thatās from the valley. We donāt all talk like that. Especially not in Northern California. Have you ever actually been here or did you get this from movies
Yes, we know. NoCal folk always like to remind SoCal folk of this. āWicked!ā
I said to someone who is obviously not from California.
Thatās called jealousy

All people have accents.
Been to Cali many times. Havenāt noticed NorCal but my friends in SoCal especially Orange County certainly have a slight accent
I grew up in north county sd and Orange County and I can usually 100% tell when someone is from coastal socal.
(In a flat, monotone voice)ā Dude!ā I grew up in LA and youāre absolutely right.

Yep, it's everywhere, East and West coast.

Z boys....
Dogtown skater kids! That looks like a young Jay Adams front-left with Stacy Peralta standing back-rightā¦
Yeah I was.gonna say same thing. Are we only one to notice it's the Z Boys?
That was my first thought. First comments I've seen mentioning them though.
Tanner from Bad News Bears in the front there. Movie filmed in California in 1976 - ticks all the boxes. "Those Yankees are real turds."
Hey Yankees, you can take that trophy and shove it up your ass!
āThatās Kelley, heās from the wrong side of the tracksā š¹šļøš¬ššš¼ š š§øš
"Es un bandido!ā
Hahah! Yes! I thought the exact same thing!
Lords of Dogtown
Looks like Jay Adams in the front. RIP.
Yeah I think that's Craig Stecyk in back. These must be some of the Dogtown Z-Boys crew.
Craig would've been 20 in 1970
Alva on the end?
Z-boys. Dope.
I was gonna say, these are the original skaters from So Cal - Dogtown!
Rough but blessed is the what comes to mind
Bodhi is lookin freshly blazed.
Lived there and then, they look like my classmates.
Totally looks like my 6th grade classmates

Over the Edge
That was set in Colorado. but it's the same look. Matt Dillon's first film, too.
Great soundtrack too
socal in the 60s/70s mustāve been a vibe
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley during this time, aside from my shitty parents it was a great time growing up here.
He man, can you buy us some beer ?
Mmm bop
Looks like north Florida as well. Abt 1974-5.
Lords of Dogtown
They better watch out for those dudes chasing them with paddles
Little proto Spicollis.
Exactly how it looks nowadays but theyāre Aiden Braden Jaden and Asher.Ā
Looks like my rat-bag crew. Some are dead, some are still partying and driving a forklift at the warehouse, some are narrow minded, old codgers, some are still in great shape and take surf trips to Nicaragua and the Maldives

Lords of Dogtown
I wish they could all be California girls
Yup, about right. OP was the bomb clothing brand.
Hang ten shirts, puka shell necklaces and vans shoes
Mood rings were big at my junior high.
That guy in the back looks like Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains.
Makes me want to watch the ZZ Boys documentary again
Thought this was the cast of Shameless for a minute
Puffy hands and fingers. Sleeping rough.
Must have been nice
Fuck I miss the 70ās
Locals only ā ļø

There are at least two girls in that photo but I canāt tell you which two
Every one of those chics shredded harder than you ever will.
Which ones though
Each and every one of them have more style and flow than you will ever experience. Itās just facts. Not too interested in playing along with your dad joke bullshit. Do yourself a favor and figure out who those girls were and take in an eyeful of what they laid down. Youāll quickly recognize that my words are true. They are legends. You are not.
You could just tell me instead of writing two paragraphs
Itās not a large inconvenience to write a few sentences. Hope it wasnāt challenging to sift through all that verbiage. You can figure out who they are all by your lonesome if you give a fuck. Frankly, you arenāt a tough read, so where this is all trying to go has the nuance of your initial gimpy girls joke. Do yourself the favor of figuring this out for yourself and watch āem ride.
Ok. I donāt know who the fuck they are. Iāll live.
Yes, indeed. Youāll live, like most of the rest. But you wonāt live like these boys. Legends, as I said. You have a great night out there.
I will. You too. Thanks for educating me. They must mean a lot to you
Troubleā¦

Just like I remember but these kids need hydration!
Went to high school in San Diego area in 70's. School had a designated "smoking area" and between smell of cigarettes one could also smell the marijuana. I'm sure other drug activity was going on but "pot" was the dominant aroma in the area.
Maui Wowie and Acapulco Gold everywhere.

I loved how my levi shorts would fray enough to where the white pockets were longer
Us so-cal guys started lighting up in our mid teens. I live in SF, but cool was smoking a j and knowing you lived in the part that made movies and people surfed. Center of the world for a while.
And im watchin it on paramount now.

My dad makes san diego in the 70's sound like the perfect place & time to be a kid whenever I ask him about his childhood. Sooooo you could say I'm not even a little jealous

One plaid shirt would make this a grunge picture.
70s was so mmmbop
These kids are Grandparents
They all look the same
Itās how we beat a police lineup.
I was about the same age living in San Fernando valley ā76-ā79. Good times.
Everyone saying Hanson, but I first thought of Silverchair
Duck tail wetsuits and single fins, I was there!
No one from āsocalā actually calls it socal lol

Ok so if I posted a picture of KISS I should title it "growing up in the 70s"? That's a stretch.
I donāt believe KISS ever grew up.
