I watched the old highlights of his but honestly it’s never watched him play. I mostly knew him as George Papadapolis in Webster and when I was 13 in Blazing Saddles.
Yeah, I remember the gambling. But Hornung, also implicated in gambling, got in HOF while alive. He was the golden boy from Notre Dame and played on championship Packer teams, while Karras was stuck on a losing Lions team. I think Hornung was simply the better known, more popular player.
He also had Vince Lombardi in his corner. Lombardi knew all the big shots in pro football. He even knew the President. Lombardi advised Hornung on what to say and what not to say.
George Wilson could not do the same for Karras.
Looks like Mongo won that round.
Part of me is very sad that many/most people only know Karras as Mongo.

Gregg also coached the Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance.
And current Bengals C Ted Karras is related to Alex.
Two HOFers, though Karras was criminally inducted posthumously.
On my first read, I thought that said, "Karras was criminally indicted." I thought to myself, "For what, I thought he was a good guy." LMAO.
The NFL held the gambling against him. He is a member of the NFL's 1960s all-decade team. That alone should have enough reason to induct him.

True. And I think Hornung apologized to Rozelle. Karras never did.

I can identify Karras-71, Forrest Gregg-75, and Donny Anderson-44. Not certain who the other 3 players are.
Lions: 78 is John Baker (LDE) and 48 is Tom Vaughn (FS). If the Packer on the ground is 71, it's Francis Peay.
It looks like 71 to me, and that name is familiar. Thanks...
Where’s Webster
George Popadopolis brings it! Lol
Is it me or do these old NFL photos look like Renaissance paintings?
Lions were up 14-0 in this game, then a touchdown by Packers tight end Carroll Dale followed by Bart Starr TD pass to Boyd Dowler tied the contest.
The Lions jerseys and helmets look damn good
George was a good 🏈player and a even better dad to Webster 👍🏽can’t for get Ma’am tho 👏🏽
The Great and Almighty Mongo 👹
