how did you get your apps to look like that?

I'm guessing a shaped icon edited on a white background, with a white wallpaper to make it look as if there's no border.

Not exactly but it's quite similar, if I use a white background the apps will have an ugly square shadow so I 1) place my images into ibispaint 2) remove the background 3) input it into my icon app (X icon changer) The PNG with no background prevents it from having a square shadow from behind the app. But I do use a white background for the widgets since the background will just turn black if I put a PNG with no background in.
