That's kinda the problem with games vs anime. In anime, anything can happen. In the game, you are bound by game mechanics. Devs added the trading thing only to encourage players to trade with each other more, but in terms of evolution it doesn't make any sense. Then in some recent gen they removed all the trading mechanics and now everything evolves with an item.
Just like the "Pokemon learning only 4 moves" thing, i guess. If they could learn infinite moves, the game would be chaotic lol. They had to make up a bs lore like "they won't be able to focus if they know many moves" to put it in the anime.

In all honesty: slaves. Kaido's settlement of Wano has effectively turned most of the people into a slave class for his pirates, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Beast Pirates, and especially officers like Gifters or Tobiropo had staffs of slaves or servants to dress, clean, and feed them.
