IDC if the show goes until 1 AM. It should last as long as it lasts. Also, the network should quit putting so much effort into pulling in casual watchers and just cater to us Oscar nerds. The old days are never coming back.

RagsTTiger

They definitely should make the honorary Oscars part of the televised show again.

SomeInternetGuitar

I appreciate that they cut all the comedy numbers from in between categories. Those took way more time than the fucking awards themselves. I’ll never forgive them for throwing Best Original Score out of the ceremony, even if it was just once.

thingaumbuku

The English Patient is a top 10 Best Picture winner ever.

InfinityFire

There's nothing remarkable about Nomadland. At best it's okay. There were 4 films I'd rather have seen win Best Picture out of that year's nominees; and this was not the role that should have given Frances McDormand a third acting Oscar (I'm not saying she's not a brilliant actress and a national treasure, because she is).

anonymindia

I think the film got awards because it spoke of topics that normally aren't spoken about... The nomads, old people having to work labor jobs to support themselves, Amazon working conditions. Oscars either go to well made films (Oppenheimer, Return of the kings) or films on important subjects that may not make an entertaining film but talk about necessary, uncomfortable topics (nomadland, spotlight). Both are okay imo because while cinema is at its forefront, to entertain, but it is also a medium to tell important stories.

Additional_Meeting_2

I agree. It’s a bit frustrating that awards for movies are sometimes just decided on what themes they pick. It’s even more glaring in documentary category. It’s like awards could be handed over once the subject matters and who is directing is announced, it doesn’t matter that much to actually watch the film.

MauriceVibes

This this this. This movie was so average.

TheNocturnalAngel

Society of the snow is better than Zone of Interest and in fact Society of the snow was better than half the best picture nominees this year.

Money-Entrance-6336

I LOVED Society of the snow.Been recommending it to everyone.

tiduraes

If the Oscars were actually 100% about merit I would be a lot less interested in them. Campaigns and narratives are one of my favorite things about it and are what makes awards season fun to follow.

FireLord_Stark

Interesting. I don’t totally disagree, but I’ve certainly never heard somebody put the awards race in these terms before. Where are you following these campaigns and narratives? Do you just look up as much press as you can about certain films and form them yourself? Or are there more specific sources who frame/shape these narratives?

MauriceVibes

Mickey Rourke should have won for The Wrestler Edit: ima double down. The Wrestler is one of the best films of the century so far.

MannersMatters21

Still my favourite Aronofsky. Heartbreaking, one of my all time favourites.

SurvivorFanDan

IMO, The Wrestler was a better film than any of the actual Best Picture nominees that year.

nanillo17

Mickey Rourke AND Marisa Tomei should've won that year

surge_aura

Jojo Rabbit not only deserves its screenplay win but should have taken home a few more

justanstalker

Scarlett Johansson should have taken that Oscar easily over Laura Dern

Beneficial_Ad2151

Brendan Fraser winning best actor over Colin Farrell was a more insulting pick than Crash winning best picture

Candid_Bicycle_6111

Christian Bale should’ve won the Oscar for Best Actor for Dick Cheney over Rami Malek.

FreemanCalavera

Willem Dafoe was my winner that year. Cooper second place. Then Bale, and hell, maybe even Mortensen. Malek was good but it mostly felt like a slightly exaggerated, if well done, impersonation of Freddie Mercury, not like a fully fledged character. Edit: switched Bale and Cooper.

Rustofcarcosa

>Malek was good but it mostly felt like a slightly exaggerated Taron Egerton should have been nominated instead in my opinion

BusinessKnight0517

Yeah but Rocketman was released the next year But I do agree Taron should have been nominated

monox217

taron egerton did a way better job as elton in rocketman and he didnt win an oscar.

TessTrue

Jennifer Lawrence deserved her Oscar win. She's phenomenal in Silver Linings Playbook.

seanx50

She deserved it for Winters Bone

SeasonOfLogic

She deserved it for both.

jshamwow

I want to scream when I hear people pretend otherwise.

Tortuga_MC

Facts

blinking-cat

In general it amazes me that people try to argue she’s not talented. Obviously she is. I didn’t start noticing claims that she was a bad actress until AFTER she was rightfully upset about her nudes being leaked.

ChickenInASuit

That makes sense, the Fappening and her reaction to it was officially the end of Reddit’s love affair with her.

whiskyteats

Who was she up against? I thought she was great in that too.

TessTrue

Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Will) Naomi Watts (The Impossible) Emmanuelle was the favourite in my circles and I don’t doubt she’s amazing in her role too but I dunno I think Jen deserved her Oscar win.

Novel-Place

Yes! I don’t understand why people argue about this.

Additional_Meeting_2

She was the beautiful successful It girl at the time and against older beloved and highly regarded actors (and Wallis who won by not being nominated in supporting like child actors usually tend to despite the size of the role). And rom come are barely ever taken seriously by awards. Which is why it’s even better she did win for one!

dorigen219

If you watched THG first and then SLP, the transformation and her acting ability is very obviously good. I’m surprised people didn’t agree with it.

Hovie1

Mad Max: Fury Road should have won best picture.

jorboyd

Upvoting because I recently re-watched this film and was supremely disappointed again.

Pretend-Ad-55

I have no idea if this is a hot take or not, but PSH deserved a second Oscar for the master. Phoenix should have won over Day Lewis as well

viniciusbfonseca

Jessica Chastain did not deserve her win, although she should have won in 2013, and Best Actress in 2022 should've gone to either Penelope Cruz or Olivia Colman.

Frosty48

I LOVED BRADLEY COOPER'S PERFORMANCE IN MAESTRO AND I DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS

Lazy-Photograph-317

The Oscars should award more Oscar’s to non-biopic performances

amberxgia

I agree that the nominees for Best Picture were strong in 1995 BUT The Shawshank Redemption should've EASILY won Best Picture.

bilboafromboston

The thing about that movie is it really didn't have support at the time. It was more " they made a real movie out of a Steven King book" and " greenie is black".

JayC411

Meryl Streep has too many nominations and should not have won for The Iron Lady.

red_riders

Who would you have picked instead? I’ve only seen Viola Davis and Rooney Mara, and would have picked either one of them. Probably Davis.

JayC411

Viola Davis for sure.

red_riders

I still wish Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer both won that night.

aussie_olivia

All That Jazz should have won Best Picture back in 1980. yes, over Kramer vs. Kramer. and yes, over Apocalypse Now.

AwkwardSwine101

Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) rightfully deserved the Best Actor award over Jesse & Jeff

DirectWorldliness792

He absolutely did!

theevilempire

Robert Downey Jr was good in Oppenheimer but not as good as Ruffalo, De Niro, or Gosling in that category

laurenmoe

The fact that Charles Melton and Dominic Sessa were not even NOMINATED made that category feel so cheap to me this year.

Jmanbuck_02

I wished Gosling or Ruffalo gave him more of a challenge the whole season.

AWholeLotOfEels

I think Sally Hawkins deserved to win over Frances McDormand, I didn't particularly enjoy The Revenant

khaliliiiov_1997

Margot Robbie in I tonya was much better preformance than both of Frances and Sally I do not like shape of water

AWholeLotOfEels

That's fair, I think we have slightly different tastes cuz I didn't like I, Tonya lol (Robbie was good in it tho)

witchyinthewild

Toy Story 4 shouldn't have beat Klaus for the Oscar that year. ....Toy Story 4 shouldn't have been made at all. #There, I said it

khaliliiiov_1997

Toy story 3 should've won best picture in 2010

MannersMatters21

Joaquin Phoenix did not deserve an Oscar for Joker, which is a mediocre film to begin with.

Putrid_Loquat_4357

Is this a hot take? I completely agree but I thought that the general consensus on joker was that the only reason it was so lauded was because most of its target audience hadn't seen taxi driver or king of comedy, both of which it shamelessly steals from.

MannersMatters21

I thought it was, I got absolutely cooked on a Facebook film group for saying Joker is just a worse version of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, and that those films explore their respective themes way better.

bilboafromboston

King of Comedy is so underrated. And under seen.

lala_b11

His performance in Joker is Oscar-win worthy but Joaquin should have won his Oscar for either “Gladiator” and/or “Walk The Line”!!

MannersMatters21

Yeah I feel like it’s the same type of situation with Leo winning for The Revenant. Good movie, not the one he should’ve won for. Was just the academy going “hey we know you’ve deserved this for some time now, here you go”.

MontanaJoev

Bradley Cooper absolutely deserved the Oscar for A Star is Born.

rurukittygurrrl

Oppenheimer was meh

viniciusbfonseca

I think that if not for Barbenheimer, Oppenheimer would not have swept the way it did

Y23K

This type of post doesn't work with Reddit's upvote and downvote system

SapirWhorfHypothesis

You have to tell people at the top to basically reverse their votes. Also it’s hard because what’s a mainstream hot take is not the same as a reddit hot take.

DrChill21

Daniel Day Lewis’ performance for Lincoln wasn’t that great.

justavivian

I dislike DDL’s acting in general(probably the only one). After the 2000s his characters follow the same type and he almost overshadows everyone he shares his scenes with. It’s like watching a monologue-not a duet. His earlier work(that isn’t usually mentioned)is better imo

Judge_Penguin999

I LOVR EEAAO I love everything that it won, it’s my personal favorite best picture winner. It’s a heart warming, beautifully edited, weird as shit, beautiful movie

degeneratespike

Is that even a hot take? I guess it would be if you said Jamie Lee Curtis deserved the Oscar

it-tastes-like-bread

i thought jamie lee curtis winning the oscar was sooo fucking odd lol.

bbmarvelluv

I did not think she deserved that win. Anyone could’ve played her character.

Lil_Artemis_92

Carey Mulligan’s performance in *Promising Young Woman* was the best of 2020. I love Frances McDormand, but Carey should have won Best Actress that year. Also, *Pulp Fiction* sucks, and I’m glad that *Forrest Gump* won Best Picture.

khaliliiiov_1997

Carey Mulligan Should've won instead of Sandra Bullock in 2010

Lil_Artemis_92

I haven’t seen *An Education*, so I can’t really speak on that, but I do think she’s one of the most underrated actresses of our time.

luxtropolis67

She should've won twice by now, for An Education and for Promising Young Woman. And if not her in 2009, literally anyone other than Bullock.

justanstalker

Gabourey Sidibe should have won for Precious in 2010 and Carey in 2020

DarthSardonis

I agree. That year should have been hers. Frances already had two acting Oscars, she didn’t need a third; especially for such an underwhelming movie.

Luchalma89

The Artist deserved everything it got.

Mumbojmbo

Oppenheimer deserved zero of its Oscars.

ceebo625

I feel like im taking crazy pills with this movie. Like, i cannot understand how anyone can think this movie is a “masterpiece”. It was a complete fucking mess and arguably Nolans worst movie yet.

oxymoron-alive

Robert Downey jr should have been an Oscar winner for Tropic Thunder

strandenger

Crash is not the worst best picture winner. It should have lost but Shakespeare in Love Exists. Greenbook over Blackkklansmen. How Green is my Valley over Citizen Kane. Crash is the Nickelback of films… it’s just sounds cool to say it’s the worst.

ericbana19

Poor Things doesn't deserve the hype and accolades.

elmontyenBCN

Ready? Crash was indeed the best picture of those nominated in 2006, and deserved its win. Bring the downvotes.

LibraWarrior1997

CODA is not a worthy Best Picture winner. Good movie but not worthy of that Oscar.

Inevitable_Click_696

Ice cold take

docobv77

Moonlight is not one of the top 30 best pictures ever.

Shagrrotten

I wouldn’t have given it BP over La La Land, but I think it’s easily a top 30 BP winner.

Shagrrotten

Seeing some un-hot takes in here, how about we turn up the heat? Not only did Daniel Day-Lewis not deserve to win Best Actor for There Will Be Blood, he is actively bad in that movie. Nomadland did not even deserve a nomination for Best Picture, Director, or Actress, much less to win all three. Neither Crash nor Green Book are in the bottom third of Best Picture winners, and definitely aren’t the worst movies to win.

DirectWorldliness792

Whoa boy, DDL being bad in TWBB is definitely a hot as fuck take! I disagree hard but good on you for bringing it to the table

BoomBoomDoomDoom

“DDL is actively bad in TWBB” wins the thread. Shut it down.

AyThroughZee

That DDL opinion might be the most insane movie take I’ve ever heard but I respect it

danram207

Stephanie Hsu performance in EEAO is overrated

zurawinowa

I’m just Ken should have won best song.

BarkerAtTheMoon

Shakespeare in Love > Birdman > a beautiful mind. I really don’t get why people think Shakespeare in Love winning is so egregious when a Beautiful Mind is right there

AmargiVeMoo

sorting by controversial to get the actual hot takes

FoxArrow12

Judi Dench deserved her Oscar.

psong328

Helen Hunt’s win for As Good as it Gets needs to get mentioned more often for worst wins. It was a pretty weak nominee year but Kate Winslet seems like the right choice and there are quite a few performances I would have given it to outside of the nominees over her

Financial_Cheetah875

CODA was deserving of BP.

TOkidd

The film industry isn’t what it used to be, the competition for an Oscar is between a few films every year, but soon it will include Marvel and other blockbusters. As a result, very few people care about the Oscars anymore compared to the 80’s & 90’s.

Reishi24

Big Hero 6 fully deserved it.

Gangringo

Gladiator only won so many awards because it didn't face much competition. Crowe definitely didn't deserve best actor. It was a fun "what if?" action movie that seriously strained any believability. If it came out almost any other year it probably wouldn't have even been nominated.

f_moss3

A Beautiful Mind deserved its BP win

One_Negotiation8076

There should be a separate category for actors playing real, famous people that we have footage of. It isn’t acting. It is mimicry.

Lead_Super

ANIMATION IS CINEMA, NOT A GENRE FOR KIDS, IT IS A MEDIUM

bellestarxo

**I would have voted for Margo Robbie for I, Tonya over Frances McDormand in 3 Billboards.** Not that Frances was bad, it's a great performance. But I was really in awe of Robbie. It was funny, tragic, and daring since Tonya was such a despised figure, or at the very least a joke in pop culture. It wasn't just a biopic where the actor does their best to impersonate the person. Robbie showed all these layers.

GoodnightTender

Ordinary People was the right pick.

Pekkerwud

*Shakespeare In Love* deserved its Best Picture win.

Low_Mark491

Not only am I glad it didn't win, Pulp Fiction never should have even have been nominated.

ChickenInASuit

Babe should have won Best Picture over Braveheart. And honestly, I’d have been perfectly fine if Braveheart hadn’t even been nominated - I think Before Sunrise, Casino, Heat and La Haine would have been more deserving.

Which_Reason8308

I didn’t like the newer film version of “All Quiet on the Western Front” (2022) all that much. Why that movie got so much acclaim and awards is beyond me! As someone who considers the Erich Maria Remarque novel one of my favorite books (I’ve even read it 3 times), I was heavily let down by the German Netflix version of this classic anti-war story. The 1930 film version and even the 1979 TV movie version were miles better. For being a film told in the novel’s original language (German), the filmmakers blew it on this one. Great characters and subplots were omitted just so I could spend 5 minutes watching a man getting burned to bits onscreen. More energy, money, and time were spent on sound and visual effects instead of crafting a take on a story so significant and universal nearly a century after the novel’s initial publication. It felt like all the director and the screenwriters did was solely read a Cliffs Notes edition and then shot the movie complete omitting the key nuances of Remarque’s story. Give me a break!

Nahkyur

Hereditary being nominated for no Oscar is a crime and should be punished.

thetoxicgossiptrain

Greta wasn’t snubbed.

[deleted]

Kramer Vs Kramer deserved the Oscar over Apocalypse Now.

Sufficient-Natural47

Jane Campion is an awful woman

CosmoRomano

Films shouldn't be eligible for Oscars until maybe 3 years after their release.

kshades25

Crash wasn't bad and I wasn't mad at it winning best picture. It wasn't the best movie of the year, I would've picked Munich.

ceebo625

Oppenheimer is one of the worst best picture winners.

Useful-Ad-7892

Fast Five, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Creed, Logan, Infinity War, Endgame, and Uncut Gems deserved Best Picture Nominations. Patrick Stewart deserved a Best Supporting Actor nom for Logan. Tessa Thompson deserved a Best Supporting Actress nom for Creed.

a_stopped_clock

As a person of Indian origin slumdog millionaire was absolute dogshit. Salaam Bombay is a much better similar film.

Blackscribe

All Transformer films deserved their Oscar nominations. Including Revenge Of The Fallen

mattbrain89

Around The World in 80 Days is still a super fun movie.

[deleted]

Will Smith was justified in lashing out at a fowl-mouthed comedian on his night.

[deleted]

I loved loved loved Maestro!!

marvelette2172

Cabaret is far superior to The Godfather and should have taken best picture.

JimFHawthorne

The best BP win of the 21st century is Spotlight

DertitousJR

Not to say you're wrong, because opinions are subjective. But: -TLOTR -the departed -no country for old men -Birdman -Parasite Are you sure about that?

JimFHawthorne

I’m sure about it in that it’s my opinion yes

SBELJ

Forest Gump was the worst of the 5 BP nominees of that year. Andrea Riseborough deserved her nomination. Only one best actor win from the 2010's do I agree with. This years Best Picture lineup is maybe the best lineup ever. (although maybe the 48th is but theres only 5 nominees so it has less of an advantage). Honestly im struggling to think of hot takes I have.

Tortuga_MC

I'm curious who the one is?

Competitive-Size8578

Greenbook isn't anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be and Black KKKLansman isn't as good as people make it out to either.  Adrian Brody kissing Halle Berry was a great moment. Don't take it too seriously.  Djimon Hounsou got screwed over for Best Supporting Oscar for Blood Diamond.

9millibros

*Saving Private Ryan* didn't deserve Best Picture, anyway, so quit your complaining already.

Responsible-Trifle-8

I really liked Nomadland and thought it deserved all three of the awards.

Shaqueltons_Ghost

Jamie Lee Curtis was my choice for best supporting actress simply because she completely disappeared into her role. Was super entertaining and elevated what was otherwise a bit part. Never thought she’d win though

ProfessionalEvaLover

Scent Of A Woman's Best Actor win is one of the worst and is Rami Malek tier in awful Oscar wins

Top_Doubt6249

This take is colder than my fridge.

Main-Operation3394

Colder than my freezer.

Shagrrotten

I think a hotter take is that Pacino is phenomenal in that movie (which is my take) and would’ve deserved the Best Actor Oscar that year if not for Denzel’s all time performance in Malcolm X.

seventeeneighty1780

Shakespeare in Love deserved the win

jalGurg

Rami Malek won an Oscar for cosplay

khaliliiiov_1997

As an arab I must love his film but I did not like it Ieally wanted Omar Sharif to be the first oscar winner for Lawernce of Arabia

Theslootwhisperer

Big hero 6 sucks and Lego movie should have won.

Idk-whattoputherelol

Rachel Mcadams deserved a nomination for Mean Girls

Budzee

1994 was a stacked year, but I agree with the Academy that Forrest Gump was the best picture.

truckturner5164

Forrest Gump deserved its Best Picture win. Titanic did not.

smurfmcgeezer

Cillian’s win for Oppenheimer was a career win and I didn’t like his performance (love the actor, though—this role just wasn’t it for me.) My spiciest take—on some days I think Ryan Gosling was more deserving of the Oscar than Cillian this year.

ApprehensiveSpinach7

Thank You, Cillian didn't deserved that Oscar, i felt nothing watching his performance

Miserable-Success624

All of Martin Scorcese’s latest projects have deserved the 0 Oscars they netted, because they are 🗑️

Legtagytron

We need a popular movie category. Arty best picture is fine but the most popular movie every year should win some kind of award if only to drag eyes towards real movies. Spiderman Across the Spiderverse, The Dark Knight, there really needs to be a pop Oscar to celebrate the film people actually liked watching that year. The movies that put asses in the seats need a trophy too.

givemethebat1

They almost had one but it was decided against due to backlash. I think with 10 nominees it isn’t as necessary.

gnomechompskey

The most popular movie each year does win, it wins a massive box-office haul and being celebrated by the industry with sequels and work showered on its makers and everyone making money hand over fist. It doesn’t need a statue *too*. It’s already won in the arena it’s good at: being popular and appealing to loads of moviegoers and earning a lot of money. That is its prize and a fitting one. The Oscars aren’t esoteric or particularly arty, they’re not a Sight and Sound crowd much less Cahiers, they’re for movies that appeal to industry voters which means usually they’re accessible and entertaining and make voters both feel and usually feel good about themselves. But they’re designed to be honoring something a cut above just commercial appeal and success. That’s what the People’s Choice Awards are for, stuff like Top Gun: Maverick or The Hangover that put asses in seats and have a pop cultural moment in theaters. The reward of being a Backstreet Boy or Thomas Kinkade is fortune and fame, not Grammys and a spot in the Louvre. The reward for being Michael Bay is a swimming pool full of cash and being perpetually greenlit for whatever you want to make, it’s unearned overkill to also get a prize meant to honor skill at your craft.

Expensive_Club_6780

Spiderverse deserved the Oscar more than boy and the heron (I’m prepared to get flamed)

PinkCadillacs

Phantom Thread is a better movie than There Will Be Blood. Outside of the DDL and Paul Dano’s performances, I find There Will Be Blood as a movie to be completely overrated.

sfgnumber1

Roma should have won best picture

DarthSardonis

1917 should have won Best Picture over Parasite.

eyeopeningexp

Scorsese hasn’t made an Oscar worthy movie in 20 years

ShaunTrek

Now this is a hot take. Not even The Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, or The Aviator?

everythinglatte

Paul Giamatti deserved the Oscar over Cillian Murphy. I felt like most of Murphy’s scenes were just him reacting to things and explaining scientific info in simpler terms

Additional_Meeting_2

Affleck in Manchester by the Sea is mostly just reacting as well as highly regarded by many. Murphy is doing an amazing job to me and carried the film

LilSliceRevolution

Totally agree and it’s not any fault in Murphy’s acting, I just think Nolan rarely lets actors do their thing. Actors in his films always seem so tightly directed without any breathing room that they don’t really feel like real people or convey much emotion for me.

pineyfusion

I loved that Spotlight won Best Picture (as cool as it would've been to see Mad Max win, I still enjoyed Spotlight more) Geraldine Page deserved her win though I wish it was a tie with Whoopi (also Page should've won at least once before that too)

fool-with-no-hill

Paul Giamatti did not deserve the oscar this year. Very limited role. Idk if cillian did either 🤷

RagsTTiger

Judy Davis was robbed.

bottomofalongcoat

It’s not that controversial but in no way should Get Out have won best original screenplay. It’s just Skeleton Key

grill_sgt

While I agree that Ledger deserved the Oscar for his Joker, he only got it because of his death. Supporting Actor in 09 was stacked, and it easily could have gone to Brolin, Hoffman, Shannon, or Downey (not surprised he was nominated for Tropic Thunder though).

MsPreposition

Major categories’ nominees don’t need to be from movies that have deep message or socio-political commentary. Movies are entertainment first.

jsanders4289

I never saw Requiem for a Dream so I can’t compare Ellen Burstyn’s performance, but I love Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich and it’s awesome she won an award for that. Probably my favorite movie of hers.

Smooth-Nothing-4286

this kind of posts is *always* filled with the most popular answers you could find...

PuzzlePiece90

Maybe public opinion has changed since, but Chicago fully deserved Best Picture and is one of the strongest winners we’ve had to date.  Also, Kubo should’ve won over Zootopia. In fact, Zootopia was good but not great.

kuewb-fizz

Wtaf were they thinking giving Kim Basinger that Oscar? Not only bc of who she was up against that year, but just in general. Absolutely awful, random af nomination and win.

pinkbootstrap

It should be a variety show and cut the speeches way short. I don't watch it because it's too drawn out and boring. I just read about it the next day, mostly to look at the dresses.

clarkyboi022

The panel of judges that decide the nominees for best animation have completely no idea what they are doing and possibly doesn’t believe in the category in itself. So they ask their respective children what animated films they have liked and watch and would put that forward.

Sonofashotgun

I liked Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, but I was ALL for Paul Giamatti winning for Holdovers

Grammarhead-Shark

Multi-Oscar winners normally have the right number of Oscars, but often for wildly the wrong movies. I am happy say Katharine Hepburn has won 4, Meryl Streep has won 3 and Bette Davis won two - but of that collective 9 Oscars, I agree with 2 of them (The Lion in Winter for Hepburn and Sophie's Choice for Meryl)

UpCavan

Spotlight is a top 10 best picture winner

sdcinerama

The Academy needs to stop giving Best Animated to Disney and Pixar movies just because they're Disney and Pixar movies. They've passed over so many quality films for popular trash that are painful to watch past the blinders of nostalgia.

originalthea

Zootopia was good but should not have won over Kubo and the Two Strings Loving Vincent was by far the best animated feature and I am still very mad it was snubbed by Disney!

thetoxicgossiptrain

LaLa Land should have won.

thetoxicgossiptrain

Timothy Hutton should have not been nominated for best supporting. Be bold and give him the best actor nom to make room for Judd Hirsh to win best supporting.

thetoxicgossiptrain

I don’t think Lupita Nyong'o Oscar win felt right. But she was playing a slave crying all over the places and they love giving us black folks Oscar’s and acclaim for that. You know who should have had more praise in that movie? Michael Fassbender. That performance was CHILLING

Opposite-Skill-9536

Margot Robbie should've won Best Actress for I Tonya and should've been nominated for Barbie

Ok-Freedom5145

Power of the Dog deserved Best Picture over Coda. And same situation with Benedict Cumberbatch, who deserved the best actor win over Will Smith, slap or no slap.

shushholden

I don’t know how hot this take is… I love ‘em both, but Boyhood should have won over Birdman.

amyjandrews

Katharine Hepburn should have at least three more Oscars than she ended up with. The Philadelphia Story (1941), Summertime (1956) and Long Day's Journey Into Night (1963). Hell, I could even make arguments for Woman Of The Year (1943) and Alice Adams (1936).

DarrenFromFinance

Penelope Allen should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Dog Day Afternoon, and she should have won. In the middle of all the big showy acting, she was quiet and steely and no-bullshit, an absolutely extraordinary performance, undeservedly underappreciated.

savealltheelephants

Leonardo deserves at least 3-4 wins for his roles

Professional-Most-11

I like crash

AlconW

Speaking as a film composer, there should be two Original Score categories - one for dramas/comedies and one for musicals. One unified category is reasonable on paper, but naïve in practice. It’s apples and oranges. Compare _Moonlight_ and _La La Land_. In a dramatic film, like _Moonlight_, music exists l to enhance the mood of a scene, all without standing out so much that it becomes a distraction. In a musical, like _La La Land_, the music IS the standout, taking top priority over everything else in the film through song and dance. But that’s not the only thing that’s unfair. Original Score is restricted to the composer(s) who wrote the underscore, not the songwriter(s). Turning to a specific case, let’s have a look at 1994, when _The Lion King_ won Original Score over _The Shawshank Redemption_. First of all, the average voter was surely listening to “Circle of Life” instead of “Stampede” when casting their vote, meaning that there was no way Thomas Newman stood a chance that year. But you know what really stings? Hans Zimmer didn’t write a single one of _The Lion King_’s five songs - it was all Elton John and Tim Rice. As much as I love Hans Zimmer, they weren’t voting for his music. Previous attempts to divide the category were almost successful, but had one glaring flaw that often made competition unfair. From 1941 to 1961, it was Drama/Comedy and Musical, but adapted scores were allowed to compete in both categories (far more frequently in the Musical category), and from 1995 to 1998, it was Drama and Musical/Comedy - comedic scores serve the same fundamental purpose as dramatic scores, so putting them with musicals instead of dramas made no sense, thus explaining why the category unified again in 1999.

myhairynipp

Oppenheimer won far too many awards. Was not close to being the best film released that year.

FLORD1LUNA

I don't think that there is a "most" deserving Oscar winner. I think it's all based on publicity and campaigns and narrative. My belief is that everyone who is nominated has already proven that they are deserving of an Oscar. It's just that the competition is between who has the better narrative. You simply cannot measure who is more deserving, because opinions vary and people connect with different performances and different characters very differently. That's why I think that all these rankings about who are the best or worst wins in Oscar history are genuinely pointless. Every win happened for a reason and every win was best for that moment.
