To be fair, Crone's offensive production had declined every year since he debuted. That said I never thought the contract was as bad as people we're saying. It's $12m a year, that's half of what you'd pay an borderline all-star on the open market.
Since we got big, there's a lot of talking going around of people that never really watch baseball, and based all their knowledge on stats.
This guy was a keeper, a utility player that can play almost all the positions and has a bat? Yes, please.
I saw someone else say how a lot of new fans don’t actually seem to like the padres, but they like winning. So a lot of these weird doomer and aggressive takes come from that sentiment
I’ve always loved Cronenworth since 2020 when I started watching the padres. He’s such a nice person too! I met him at a coffee shop I worked at in downtown.
He’s super hard on himself when he misses or makes a bad play, you can tell he really just wants to do his best and help the team. Makes me so happy to see him doing well
Lmao I remember more than one vocal member of this subreddit confidently proclaiming that Juan Soto was a fraud and would never again hit above 250 at this time last season
I didn’t want to but I did make the case that it would be a prudent thing to do. Now if his value tanks maybe we get him on a friendly deal and he turns it around.
I don't think value of players truly drops until like June when they have a cold start. I would still give up a couple good prospects if we got Corbin Carroll even though he's hitting below .200 right now.
Who would’ve thought this cute little freckled face kid would be the python he is today

>like many of you wanted to
Yes, because he was absolutely awful last year and his AVG, OBP, and SLG each decreased every year from 2020 - 2023. Everyone is thrilled that he looks like a stud again this year, but let’s not act like it was a sure thing that he’d figure things out
yeah but why would you ever sell low? That's just stupid, just like trading Kim now when his value is at an all time low and you ain't getting shit back
100% agreed you never want to sell low. But there’s a difference between a typical sell low, and moving on from a struggling player who seemingly peaked as a 26-year-old rookie and has gotten worse every year of his career.
And the reason you would trade Kim is because he’s almost certainly gone after this season in free agency, and then you’re not getting anything back except for a comp pick if you extend him the qualifying offer. Obviously the timing hasn’t worked out where Kim is struggling a ton, and now it probably doesn’t make sense to trade him during the season
Never listen to reddit or twitter armchair GMs and managers. It's like getting investment advice from a 13 year old with severe borderline personality disorder. The multi-season "Juan Soto is a fraud, diva, and clubhouse cancer" talk here should make that clear.
I think expected stats mean a lot. Expected stats speak to a player's process. No one can control what happens after they put bat to ball but they can control how consistently they make quality decisions at the plate before that moment of truth. You make the right decisions often enough and the breaks are going to fall your way more often than not.
I think it's based on his actual throws for the year. Which I can only assume are relay throws or maybe 1 or 2 to 2nd for a double play. Doesn't have to throw much or that hard at 1st.
It’s one month, really happy to see him hitting but I still hate the deal. He’s be a Padre rn and next year had they not made a deal that wasn’t necessary.
I’ve noticed that is redditors know jack shit, which makes sense
Hey, I stayed at a holiday inn AND watched moneyball last night thank you very much
People were literally saying his contract was the worst on the team. Insane, had a down year and everyone wanted him gone.
Before his contract even started.

Or they echo a lot of ESPN sentiment, which is usually garbage
I saw someone else say how a lot of new fans don’t actually seem to like the padres, but they like winning. So a lot of these weird doomer and aggressive takes come from that sentiment
And he can pitch too
Does this include you? Cause it certainly includes me 🤣
Yes certainly, it includes all of us fools lmfao
There's a reason Redditors dont work in the FO
I actually have never met Jack Shit. Is he nice? Unfortunate last name
If he can get his average versus lefties up without sacrificing the murder he's doing to righties, he'll be a monster.
He has to because lefties are avoiding Tati to get to Crone.
Only 4ks in 29 plate appearances against left handers. Putting the ball in play, so it's got to go up if he keeps doing what he is doing.
Totally agree. Not enough data yet
His paycheck is a bargain if he keeps this level of play up.
If he keeps this up, it may be the best first base contract in baseball (weirdly)
Yeah but remember when Wil Meyers bought everyone at the bar rounds after winning?
I'll be at Social Tap waiting Jake, this is the new tradition

I'm very happy to have been wrong on him
And the guy we did let go but eventually picked back up is producing more offensively than the big 3.
"Motherfluff the big three, (redacted), it's just big ME" -Jurickson "Kendrick Lamar" Profar
reddit is collectively dumber than a brick at the bottom of a swimming pool. good thing the team doesn’t read these threads for advice.
Lmao I remember more than one vocal member of this subreddit confidently proclaiming that Juan Soto was a fraud and would never again hit above 250 at this time last season
Man someone was complaining in here that Soto walked too much just the other week. Smh
pAy ThE mAn!
Wait so you're saying I can't be a GM. My arm chair is going to need to explain some things.
Turns out we should’ve traded Kim like no one wanted to
It’s been one month. Both you and OP need to calm down. Haha.
Haha for sure. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if HSK ends up having a much better season than Jake
I didn’t want to but I did make the case that it would be a prudent thing to do. Now if his value tanks maybe we get him on a friendly deal and he turns it around.
We still can but his value is tanking abit, still pretty valuable due to the gold glove he got last year.
I don't think value of players truly drops until like June when they have a cold start. I would still give up a couple good prospects if we got Corbin Carroll even though he's hitting below .200 right now.
Yeah but Kim is not Corbin Carroll
We will get next to nothing for half a year of Kim who is having a down year lol
2nd highest WAR on the team and same OPS+ as last year. Kim is fine
Or how about no kneejerk reaction trades?
Dude, we're one month into the season.
In our defense, he was simply awful at the plate last year.
He made an adjustment with his elbow position at the tail end of last year. He’s keeping it up more. Apparently that has a lot to do with it.
Who would’ve thought this cute little freckled face kid would be the python he is today https://preview.redd.it/4ogmoesyy3yc1.jpeg?width=465&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3548335eaadca7f207cfc3cfd5eeccbf67759486
Real Pads fans knew this man would bounce back this year. Very good to see. Makes me happy for him. And us.
He def made some changes in the offseason and it's showing.
>like many of you wanted to Yes, because he was absolutely awful last year and his AVG, OBP, and SLG each decreased every year from 2020 - 2023. Everyone is thrilled that he looks like a stud again this year, but let’s not act like it was a sure thing that he’d figure things out

Trading Kim just makes another hole though. I don't want to have to play Tyler wade or eguy everyday.
"Jake's contract should be Kim's money" lmao people will just say whatever, don't know ball etc.
I’m pretty sure just about every gm in the game would have swapped then contracts if they could have.
Never listen to reddit or twitter armchair GMs and managers. It's like getting investment advice from a 13 year old with severe borderline personality disorder. The multi-season "Juan Soto is a fraud, diva, and clubhouse cancer" talk here should make that clear.
He wasn’t “that guy” here though
Yeah and the same idiots are saying we need to trade Kim like dude wasn’t a workhorse last year. Lmao get real.
I love Cronenworth, but the stats you have up don’t mean much in the long run, a lot of what’s highlighted is expected stats
And they are higher than his actual stats. Edit: accidentally typed lower. He is expected to be better than he is currently performing
They actually mean everything in the long run. It is the short term results that can fool you.
I think expected stats mean a lot. Expected stats speak to a player's process. Same could be said for Kim’s 2023
Yeah I never wanted him gone. I know he had a rough 23 season. But I’ve always loved his heart. I knew he’d be back.
Maybe now we won't have to eat his contract when we trade him
Let's not forget that he barely hits .250.
.279 and 2nd on the team. So, I totally forgot he barely hits .250, since he doesn't
Yeah, let me know where he's at by the end of the season
Sample size is a tough one
All of a sudden after the grand slam
I wish you posted the fielding stats as well

Cronenworth arm strength a 6? He was a pitcher before going pro
I wonder if all his underhand flips to the pitcher covering 1st count toward that as well.
I think it's based on his actual throws for the year. Which I can only assume are relay throws or maybe 1 or 2 to 2nd for a double play. Doesn't have to throw much or that hard at 1st.
That number is in relation to other first basemen? Edit: nvm, just “MLB”

makes sense. if first basemen had strong arms they wouldn't be first basemen.
I think it is all players.
What a hilariously misleading stat
It’s one month, really happy to see him hitting but I still hate the deal. He’s be a Padre rn and next year had they not made a deal that wasn’t necessary.
His batting average is so bad, oh my goodness!! 🗑️🚮
