Seriously, we have plenty of guys capable of hitting 30+ Homer's. But getting someone who hits for average to apply baserunning pressure would be huge.
I’m pretty sure arraez is a worse fielder but I could be wrong. I know he’s played 1st in the past so maybe there, with bogaerts in DH. Just spitballing
He is. Arraez isn’t a good fielder at all. Guessing he DH’s, plays a little 1st, and a little 2nd..unless there’s another deal coming behind it. I know this won’t be popular..but wonder if this means HSK is more likely to move at the deadline.
Admittedly I'm not too familiar with his defensive record. I'd be fine with a DH who primarily hits for contact but I know that defies conventional wisdom, so that's my best guess of how things would shift.
Conventional wisdom is lame. A hitter is a hitter. Who cares if the slugging in our lineup comes from 3rd base, catcher, or DH.
Also modern day renditions of power heavy lineups usually fucking suck for us with the marine layer. I’m tired of watching fly balls die every time. Let Manny and Tatis walk and have Arraez slap hit them home idgaf
Manny (3B), Kim (SS), Xander (2B/DH), Crone (1B) with Arraez 2B/DH. It means there's almost always an infielder available tbh. Xander can cover Kim's rest days, Kim got Manny, and Arraez has X's covered. Profar cover's Crone at 1st.
I think it's an overpay in terms of prospect capital but maybe an extra prospect was needed to make up for Go's outgoing salary. But I also think Arraez makes this a much more stable lineup offensively.
I'm saying win/win for now. I was on record as saying we needed a major offensive upgrade sooner rather than later and Preller did it, so I really can't be critical. Marlins did really well though, but if this team gets on a role no one will care about those prospects in a few weeks.
I follow the farm pretty religiously… and don’t touch muh prospects… but this is not an overpay in the slightest. Head has struggled in Low A, and the other guys are replaceable depth in positions we have better prospects. Very OK with what we gave up.
Preller always wanted Arraez, I don’t even blame him. Doubt we traded our elite prospects, but I imagine it’s going to hurt a little bit.
Biggest loser of this trade is probably Donny, who isn’t going to get the call up to DH.
I will say one thing as an outsider looking in. Your organization makes some odd choices but at least they just aren’t willing to quit. Willingness to try is literally a competitive advantage in today’s game.
If you look at some of the years right before Preller, you'll understand why us fans have given him a long leash. Say what you will, but the man's always looking to do what he thinks will improve the team. Who makes a deal like this beginning of May? Certainly no slouch.
I used to be a Rockies fan. The Rockies are always willing to quit. Their stupid trades are giving away star players for pretty much nothing (Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals for a bag of chips) and letting other talent just walk. And Monfort saying before last year's season that the goal was to play .500 ball.
Padres may make weird trades but they are at least attempting to do something.
If Dillon Head and Jacob Marse are out than that leavs Hommer Bush Jr. And Ghram Pauley for LF in the future. Merlli and Tatis Jr in the outfield Hommer Bush Jr or Ghram Pauley.
As a Twins fan in San Diego, Arraez is outstanding. Great personality and he’ll come as close to hitting .400 as anyone these days. Should be a great addition. This team needs some hits and runs.
Maybe. But statistically he wasn't just some singles guy. He had a really high career slugging for a singles guy. He was averaging like 35 doubles a year for like a decade.
I gotchu!
Also, source: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/padres-nearing-deal-for-luis-arraez.html
Edit: Yes, Jakob Marsee thrown in as well, the trade updated about a minute after I posted my source
What the hell? I guess as permanent DH? Don't get me wrong, I like Arraez but is he really a major difference maker? Hopefully they didn't give up too much.
I get it! I'm not upset or anything, was just confused as it was out of nowhere lol. Here's to hoping he'll turn it around in SD and give us a great season!
I am open to the idea that this is a good trade but Arraez just doesn’t move the needle for me. Really hoping the prospect capital wasn’t too outrageous
Its interesting. I thought this before the season. That they would keep him for Korea and a little after and then trade him especially if he kept up being hot. When you see the tv ads for the upcoming giveaways they have all of the mech made (like the Joe bobble head etc) and show it on the add but when they say the Kim bobble head in June they don’t show it. Because it’s probably not made. I think he might know he’s probably getting traded and it’s affecting him mentally and his performance because he’s comfortable here and not sure what’s in store.
Probably the case. Move Bogarts back to short. Arraez can play 2nd or 1st if they’d want Cronenworth back at 2nd, though he seems a good fit at 1st. Adding Arraez also adds some flexibility as fill-in in the field even with no other moves.
We probably wanted GO in the deal to offset some of Arraez’s contract. He wasn’t looking good at all.
Head marsee became movable once Merrill showed he can okay center. Martorella’s future here was a dh with cron locked in forever. Traded depth for a guy who can help us now.
Gotta see who they gave up to really gauge this. Wondering how he fits into this whole thing but can’t really complain too much landing a career .324 hitter.
https://preview.redd.it/66j243hefbyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dca12e304677edde04666047900145846598214
I just hope we didn’t give up too much for him
padres have endless prospects. reminds me a bit of the adam frazier trade a few years ago, but i know this guys a bit more consistent than him. exciting stuff!
Found out about this from a coworker of mine who is good friends with Nathan Martorella, one of the guys we're trading. He was pulled from the Missions game tonight while on second base!
I always trade for Arraez when i play franchise in video games… and i always trade away Xander… lol but irl, afraid Kim’s gonna be gone realistically, and I hate to see that so so so much. Hope something can be figured out
Good, I was just saying a couple of days ago that we needed to make this move now instead of waiting until the trade deadline. With Arraez and Solano now we have some professional hitters at DH.
He fits their put the ball in play strat. My guess is he will play some 1b/2b. Xander will prob get some time at short and Kim or cronenworth getting time at 3b.
Great get!! You trade prospects for a proven big leaguer 100% of the time. Chance that any of these prospects (no matter how bright) even make it to the bigs, let alone become useful contributors, let alone become solid .300 hitters, is very slim. You maintain a farm system to feed the big league club; you can do that by spending years playing the “development lottery” (and occasionally you hit the jackpot, like Baltimore) or by cashing chips in for proven talent.
It was gonna be either trade crony or trade kim. Looks like crony is bouncing back kim seems lost this season. Unfortunately I doubt new management wants to tie money up in him. Our infield is pretty set and Pauley csn learn 1st and work on power hitting
Let's wait to see what we give up. [baseballtradevalues.com](http://baseballtradevalues.com) has Arraez with a surplus value of $5.2m so I don't think we're talking about any of our top 10 prospects. We'll see
We’ll have a rotating DH.
It will give manny a day off from fielding bogey or even Kim. this was in the news months ago, they’ve been taking since before the season started.
I’m not a fan of him giving up the Korean prospect but I do think this will help us.
With these SS and 2nd baseman we keep signing, the question is less whether they are good, but more are they going to be happy moving to positions they aren’t familiar with or a DH role when they’ve been used to the field? Sometimes I think our front office undervalues the human part of these moves and ends up with underperforming people as a result of it. Soto was a great example. We undervalued the effect it would have on Soto moving to a new position, being away from his family (he preferred the east coast), and being on a new team midseason when he had only been with one franchise.
Those RISP stats, though, esp. within minus 1-3 run back!
What the fuck lol
This is the only appropriate reaction. AJ can still cook. ![gif](giphy|56wbROzCaUzDy)
Luis gonna bring that Tony Gwynn energy
From a Twins fan you will absolutely love Luis. He’s constant energy and just a fun dude.
With Gwynn giggles, too? 😄
What’s our infield gonna look like??
Guessing he’s our DH
A DH who can’t hit for power…hmmm
If he’s our DH and hits .320+ I’m completely fine with it, we’ve got power from other guys
Seriously, we have plenty of guys capable of hitting 30+ Homer's. But getting someone who hits for average to apply baserunning pressure would be huge.
Leadoff DH. Set the table.
Or do we want him driving in the runs? Good problems to have fellas
I like this
My guess is Arraez plays second and Boegarts shifts to DH
I’m pretty sure arraez is a worse fielder but I could be wrong. I know he’s played 1st in the past so maybe there, with bogaerts in DH. Just spitballing
No reason to play him at 1st. Crone has been borderline gold glove material over there so far. DH is fine for Arraez.
He is. Arraez isn’t a good fielder at all. Guessing he DH’s, plays a little 1st, and a little 2nd..unless there’s another deal coming behind it. I know this won’t be popular..but wonder if this means HSK is more likely to move at the deadline.
Guessing its mostly a DH, and then insurance for Kim leaving
Admittedly I'm not too familiar with his defensive record. I'd be fine with a DH who primarily hits for contact but I know that defies conventional wisdom, so that's my best guess of how things would shift.
Conventional wisdom is lame. A hitter is a hitter. Who cares if the slugging in our lineup comes from 3rd base, catcher, or DH. Also modern day renditions of power heavy lineups usually fucking suck for us with the marine layer. I’m tired of watching fly balls die every time. Let Manny and Tatis walk and have Arraez slap hit them home idgaf
Agree - just look at our non-Manny DH’s this year Arraez replacing Wade/Eguy/Pauley in the lineup is a HUGE upgrade
Eguy is clapping cheeks rn, but idk if that holds up if he played every game
His left right splits are insane. Granted he doesn’t get a lot of AB’s against righty’s
100% agree, I just question if the Padres will.
Arraez is pretty much useless on D. He’s gotta be mostly a DH I think
Bogaerts is an infinitely better fielder than
No way they’d do Xander like that
Interesting guess lol
Yeah and?
Those old rules don't really apply anymore.
Dude he’s a DH batting champ. Big difference.
When had there ever been a padres DH with power prior to 2024? Nelson Cruz, Matt stairs ?!?!?
Manny (3B), Kim (SS), Xander (2B/DH), Crone (1B) with Arraez 2B/DH. It means there's almost always an infielder available tbh. Xander can cover Kim's rest days, Kim got Manny, and Arraez has X's covered. Profar cover's Crone at 1st.
Xander better start hitting if he's gonna DH lol
7 Shortstops and 4 2nd basemen.
He’s going to be are DH going forward but I really like Wade right now too. He can also play first base
About 13 guys spread out evenly
Probably means Kim gets traded
Unfortunate but probably true in the long run
Trade summary: Padres get - Luis Arraez Marlins get - Dylan Head, Woo Suk-Goo, Nathan Martorella
If that’s all we gave up, that’s a fleece job by AJ.
Plus Jakob Marsee, just thrown in
That’s a steal from the marlins
Prospects for Arraez? Pretty good win-win for both orgs
Marlins phoning it in real early.
So no Head?
*slams phone*
*snaps board*
I think it's an overpay in terms of prospect capital but maybe an extra prospect was needed to make up for Go's outgoing salary. But I also think Arraez makes this a much more stable lineup offensively. I'm saying win/win for now. I was on record as saying we needed a major offensive upgrade sooner rather than later and Preller did it, so I really can't be critical. Marlins did really well though, but if this team gets on a role no one will care about those prospects in a few weeks.
Lol can confirm, I was just talking with you about it yesterday. Looking more like a playoff lineup now?
I follow the farm pretty religiously… and don’t touch muh prospects… but this is not an overpay in the slightest. Head has struggled in Low A, and the other guys are replaceable depth in positions we have better prospects. Very OK with what we gave up.
I feel much better about this trade after seeing the return
And marsee
Foook
Source?
Out of fucking nowhere, huh? Welcome to San Diego, Luis Arraez
Preller always wanted Arraez, I don’t even blame him. Doubt we traded our elite prospects, but I imagine it’s going to hurt a little bit. Biggest loser of this trade is probably Donny, who isn’t going to get the call up to DH.
Fake news, everyone knows we only acquire shortstops.
https://preview.redd.it/c9xjbmc0hbyc1.jpeg?width=588&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2b137feceaac1630192ddf36738301c62980307 6 games there. That's a SS
2b is really just the lefty version of a SS
Preller to Arraez: get ready to learn shortstop buddy
My guess is he is DHing.
Well he can't field worth a damn and you guys are made of middle infielders so he'd better be lol
> and you guys are made of middle infielders specifically SS
I will say one thing as an outsider looking in. Your organization makes some odd choices but at least they just aren’t willing to quit. Willingness to try is literally a competitive advantage in today’s game.
If you look at some of the years right before Preller, you'll understand why us fans have given him a long leash. Say what you will, but the man's always looking to do what he thinks will improve the team. Who makes a deal like this beginning of May? Certainly no slouch.

And Monfort saying before last year's season that the goal was to play .500 ball. Padres may make weird trades but they are at least attempting to do something.
I’m a Phillies fan. Don’t love every move. But damn do they try.
Yup. Say what you will about Preller, but we’re not too far removed from the Alexi Amarista, and Orlando Hudson years in SD..so personally? I love AJ.
dont you fucking touch ethan, preller.
Salas ain’t going anywhere
We gave up Dylan Head, Woo Suk-Goo, Nathan Martorella
Hearing Marsee too
This is nothing relatively. I like Head but c’mon.
Or leo...would also like to keep Pauley...
If pauley will now be a LF for the future
If Dillon Head and Jacob Marse are out than that leavs Hommer Bush Jr. And Ghram Pauley for LF in the future. Merlli and Tatis Jr in the outfield Hommer Bush Jr or Ghram Pauley.
Holy shit it’s that guy that hit .354 last year? I don’t care where he plays I’ll take it.
Padres can field a team of players that have all played shortstop at one point, other than the catcher/Campo.
As a Twins fan in San Diego, Arraez is outstanding. Great personality and he’ll come as close to hitting .400 as anyone these days. Should be a great addition. This team needs some hits and runs.
No fucking way
We need a consistent hitter. He has always wanted him.
As a Marlins fan living in SD, I'm really happy we sent Arraez to a good home.
Marlins fan here, please treat him well. We fucking love this guy so much. I hate our poverty franchise.
We like our high-average singles hitters in San Diego. We typically build statues of them. On the plus side, your team actually has rings.
Gwynn wasn't really a singles hitter in his prime though. Dude wasn't ichiro, his career OPS of .850.. and slugging like .470.
The man was a line drive hitter. Line drives often go for singles.
Maybe. But statistically he wasn't just some singles guy. He had a really high career slugging for a singles guy. He was averaging like 35 doubles a year for like a decade.
HE GETS ON BASE
Massive move. Professional hitter from the left side. Lineup looks legit
Welp time to join this sub. I've been an Arraez fan since 2019 and I move along with him. He's so much fun and I wish him nothing but success!
Welcome!
WHO ARE THE PROSPECTS & RP???
Woo-suk Go, Dillon Head and Nathan Martorela
That works for me. Thanks friend!
I gotchu! Also, source: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/padres-nearing-deal-for-luis-arraez.html Edit: Yes, Jakob Marsee thrown in as well, the trade updated about a minute after I posted my source
Marsee in deal too. I still like it!
And marsee
Damnit. My Missions are losing our only 1B prospect.
AJ Preller cooked on this one
Please god, don’t turn into Adam Frazier from a years ago. Guy lead the league in BA at the time of the trade. Then promptly disappeared for us.
Arraez is not a one year wonder.
This is what I'm afraid of. He comes to SD and bats .250. Only because most of our trades seem to do that.
Preller is going to dismantle the farm in hopes to save his job
We kept all the important ones, which is nice
I’ve seen this movie before.
I mean..it’s fun at the time..🤷♂️
He’s still under control for 2 years.
The San Diego Infielders!
What the hell? I guess as permanent DH? Don't get me wrong, I like Arraez but is he really a major difference maker? Hopefully they didn't give up too much.
I mean..he’s off to a tough start, but he’s the closest thing playing to Tony Gwynn with the bat.
It's wild to me that .299 is considered a tough start
Last time I looked at his stats (last week) he was hitting .245. I see he’s been back to his old self since
If a guy that’s lead the league in batting average the last 2 years doesn’t move the needle for you then who will?
We had a dude in DH a few nights ago with a sub-.500 OPS. This guy is our DH!
Umm he definitely moves the needle bro.
Inches?
The lineup looks real nice: Arraez, Tatis, profar, machado, bogaerts, Cronenworth, Campusano, Kim, Merrill
Bet nobody had Profar hitting 3rd on their 2024 bingo card..
Half of us didn't have him in the roster at all! I'm happy to be proven wrong
However it lines up there isn’t any free outs in there unless someone is in a slump
Do I have reason to not be hype about this?
Jury’s out. It’s a strange fit, but Arraez is a 2x batting champ, so it’s got big potential.
It’s nice to add a guy who with high average and low strikeouts. Not much power but I bet he’s annoying to pitch to.
HUH
There goes Kim then
Its interesting. Probably the case. Move Bogarts back to short. Arraez can play 2nd or 1st if they’d want Cronenworth back at 2nd, though he seems a good fit at 1st. Adding Arraez also adds some flexibility as fill-in in the field even with no other moves.
Legit tho, I don’t know if I like this move He’s a singles hitter who’s not terribly impressive this season
He’s batting .300 and it’s only been a month
Lead him off and Tatis is always batting with a man on
They gave up A LOT too..Love the idea of Arraez in front of Tatis/Manny/Bogy..but man..Head, Marsee, Go, AND Martorella seems crazy steep.
We probably wanted GO in the deal to offset some of Arraez’s contract. He wasn’t looking good at all. Head marsee became movable once Merrill showed he can okay center. Martorella’s future here was a dh with cron locked in forever. Traded depth for a guy who can help us now.
Watch it be Morejon
LFGSD!!!!!
I'll gladly take a DH who can get hits.
Gotta see who they gave up to really gauge this. Wondering how he fits into this whole thing but can’t really complain too much landing a career .324 hitter.
So Woo Suk Go, Head and Marsee
https://preview.redd.it/66j243hefbyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dca12e304677edde04666047900145846598214 I just hope we didn’t give up too much for him
Well...this will be interesting. Arb eligible next season, then FA in '26. So this is probably for 1.75 seasons.
padres have endless prospects. reminds me a bit of the adam frazier trade a few years ago, but i know this guys a bit more consistent than him. exciting stuff!
Prospects #6 Head, #9 Marsee, #13 Martorella. Plus Woo Suk Go
Glad it wasn't Snelking/Lesko.
Woo Suk Go seems like a win but Marsee Head and Martorella is a lot. Imo.
If Dillon Head and Jacob Marse are gone than what the hell.
Hope they hurry up and finalize this so Don and Mud can announce it. You know it’s gotta be driving them crazy that they can’t talk about it yet.
The NL West arms race continues
Let’s goooo! I love this for us.
Head could be good. Don't really care about the rest. These are the types of prospect for vet trades that work almost every time.
![gif](giphy|l4Ho0At2UD2d7WyD6)
Woo Suk Went
Good.
Hope something can be figured out
Preller is getting desperate 🤦♂️
Good, I was just saying a couple of days ago that we needed to make this move now instead of waiting until the trade deadline. With Arraez and Solano now we have some professional hitters at DH.
And so it begins
He fits their put the ball in play strat. My guess is he will play some 1b/2b. Xander will prob get some time at short and Kim or cronenworth getting time at 3b.
But why lol? Just throw him at DH. He can’t field worth a shit why would you shuffle the entire infield for a negative fielder defensively
Makes more sense than trying to hit bombs into the June gloom
Head gone hurts
AJ never fails to surprise lol
Great get!! You trade prospects for a proven big leaguer 100% of the time. Chance that any of these prospects (no matter how bright) even make it to the bigs, let alone become useful contributors, let alone become solid .300 hitters, is very slim. Lmao we are a truly braindead org!
With Preller’s in-season trade track record, Arraez will hit .248 the rest of the season for us.
I feel like we are gonna trade Kim and move X to SS
It was gonna be either trade crony or trade kim. Looks like crony is bouncing back kim seems lost this season. Unfortunately I doubt new management wants to tie money up in him. Our infield is pretty set and Pauley csn learn 1st and work on power hitting
woo suk go, Martorello, Dylan head
And Marsee
Go, head, and marty going the other way
And marsee that’s the trade.
WHAT THE FUCK LMFAO
I’m not guessing it’s any top guys going back. I’d guess nobody in the top 10. …I hope.

Deal makes some sense, once Merrill became the center fielder preller traded from the depth there in the minors.
Holy fucking DH
Do the Padres not need a starting LHP?
With these SS and 2nd baseman we keep signing, the question is less whether they are good, but more are they going to be happy moving to positions they aren’t familiar with or a DH role when they’ve been used to the field? HOW DO I FEEL ABOUT THIS!?
Who did we give up? Stoked to get a bat (this isn't Frazier) still who did we give up...
[удалено]
Played games at shortstop? Yeah, that’s a padre
Wow! LFG
I actually really like this, hopeful it works out
Solid move.
Holy shit I’m off twitter for a few hours and all hell breaks loose.
perfect DH for petco sad about Head & Marsee though Homer Bush Jr szn now
whaaaa
[https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arraelu01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arraelu01.shtml) Those RISP stats, though, esp. within minus 1-3 run back!
