The original meme shows a woman going through heartbreak, healing, and becoming evil afterwards.
Somebody replaced the last panel though with a meme from r/AnarchyChess which is just “Google En Passant.” It’s an in-joke that’s half nonsensical and half a meme since so many people don’t know about that rule in chess.
I pulled a "Bush-01" today. I made it up on the spot, during a friendly game. In order to protect his Queen, my buddy (Black) moved his King-side Rook to B5. Coincidentally, his Queen-side Rook was at A6, which had a direct line of sight with my King-side Bishop at F1... so I said "I think I just invented a new move" then proceeded to take both Rooks with my Bishop. His confusion turned to horror when I said "It was an inside job" and then we both laughed so hysterically that he spilled his coke on the board.
Yup. My sister. I'm 43, she's 30. She had an entire attack plan laid out. I let her continue to think she about had me, while I set up to put her king in check made. She was one move away from putting me in check when I castled. She goes, "wait, what the hell was that? You can't do that. That's not a real move." She was pissed when I made her Google it. I was shocked she didn't know that one. She definitely still doesn't know about en passant.
Yeah, castling has strict conditions. You can't have moved your king. You can't castle out of check. And you can't castle through check. So if any of the spaces the king moves through could be taken by an opponents piece, you can't castle.
I joined chess club in middle school and had to bring in my chess book (this was pre internet times) to prove En Passant was a real move because even the teacher who created the club didn’t believe it was a real move.
I think the En Passant joke is she is a white pawn that took a black piece. See how he disappears behind her. She's dressed in white, he's dressed in black.
Ok, if I remember correctly the rule is that you can eat a pawn dialonaly if they move 2 spaces instead of 1 like if it had only move once since the 2 spaces rule was created to speed up games and they didn't want to change balance?
That’s it: if you use the “pawn’s first move can be two squares forward” rule to “cowardly” escape an opposing pawn, the opposing pawn can take you anyway.
Exercising memory helps maintain the brain and my family has had multiple cases of severe memory loss.
I also don't want to state things as facts if I'm not sure about it.
Ok my girlfriend was on a chess team in high school I’m gonna show her this and see how much she hates it
Edit: wow she hates it. But she accepts it’s a real rule. We are gonna buy a chess set so I can learn how to play because I think it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen 🤣
That move is called en passant(french for "in passing"). The white pawn can take the black pawn as if the black piece only moved one square forward.
In the first picture, you can see the woman(in white) having just made that en passant move on the guy(in black). Then the guy disappears because he was captured.
I used this on a guy in a chess club that was meeting in a library. He threw a fit and refused to believe it was an allowable move until the head of the club came over and was like oh ya that’s perfectly legal
lol this gotta be part of the in joke, right? no way someone could be in a chess club and not know about en passant. that's like not knowing about route-des-pierres or zwangsturbeng.
https://preview.redd.it/i37e97k6d8fc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2147c17aaeaf688910186b216022bef065663d29
It's too late! The Jonkling has already begun!
It was pretty informal we just kinda met ate pizza and played chess. I eventually switched to a more challenging group cause I wanted to compete. Went to only one “official” tournament.
I'm trying to figure out how he misspelled "Zwangsturbeng"
"Zwangs" would mean "by force" but "turbeng" is not a word and I can't think of a word that is spelled similarly
Did this to a buddy of mine. We try to play once a week and I had a great opportunity to use en passant put him in check and then check mate two moves later. The look on his face was “what the fuck?” Looked it up after the game and just said “that’s fucking awesome”.
It’s only legal on and directly after the first move of the pawn. So pretty specific. If white made any other move they would not be able to en-passant at a later time. Also I believe it’s only if the pawn moves out two blocks. (Kinda similar to how restricted a castle is.)
Also additional fun fact en-passant is French for “in passing”
Yeah it's a niche move you can barely use but if you can it feels great, even better if the other person is confused and needs to double check it
I taught chess to children and after a while they all knew about it, therefore confusing almost every adult they played against
I believe it became a thing once the rule to allow pawns to move two spaces forward on their first move was implemented as a means to speed up the game. It essentially combines two moves into one. So by that same reasoning it was determined that if a player uses the two spaces move, the opponent would be allowed to capture the pawn with his own pawn as if it actually moved one space at a time with the caveat that it must be done immediately after the two spaces move or not at all.
This is not loss, wrong pattern. You’ve failed honestly. You took a perfectly good joke and looked too far. The paranoia got to you. You kept looking even when we were sure there was nothing to look for and this is the result. A bastardization of what was once great. Much like the red scare, you were so busy looking for something you invented it where it wasn’t. It’s the inverse of what you were trying for. You were seeking where no one hid. This is truly a disappointment. You are truly a disappointment.
I assumed it was a joke about her being the white pawn and commiting a murder-suicide. Didn't realize en passant was considered obscure or even a meme. TIL.
The guy walked past her, and in the original she's heartbroken and then heals evil, but here the final panel shows an en passant move which is when a pawn can kill another pawn that has moved past them with their two space initial move, so now it's like the lady and the guy are pawns and she just captured him.
En passant is a forced move, too. I mean, chess doesn't require it, but you serve yourself a front row seat in hell if you don't do it.
Same with King b1. Always King b1.
The last panel is replaced with a visualization of the rare chess move called en passant. If your pawn is nearing the end of the board and the opponent moves a pawn in the column next to yours two spaces instead of one, (which is only allowed as the pawn's first move,) you can pass the pawn diagonally like that and take it out at the same time.
This move has become a running meme in the chess communities, as a large number of people are unfamiliar with the move and it blindsides them pretty frequently.
(As a related story, I got someone with two en passants in a game. They were PISSED that they didn't know about the move because that move got me back my queen.)
I think the point is that, she thinks she's past the heartbreak; but just like when you push a pawn two squares, only to see your pawn taken by the pawn you've "passed" - she suffers the heartbreak again. I thought I knew all the rules, but last time I played I had to be told that you can't castle to escape check. Ruined my entire plan.
Yeah, castling has strict conditions. You can't have moved your king. You can't castle out of check. And you can't castle through check. So if any of the spaces the king moves through could be taken by an opponents piece, you can't castle.

I think the En Passant joke is she is a white pawn that took a black piece. See how he disappears behind her. She's dressed in white, he's dressed in black.
Yeah this is it. He passed by her without acknowledging her, so she en passanted his ass.
This is the real answer!
Yep, the knife is missing. She en passanted him.

Probably helps that she's in white and he's in dark colors, implying she can capture him _in passing_
Just found out yesterday, that my father in law for 20 years does not know en passant
I just love this subreddit for the great people like you able to explain a joke to no longer make me feel as dumb

Zwangsturbeng is only online though. Zwangsturbeng over-the-board gets messy.
Or the Frenchman’s cum sock
You know even in a chess club there are going to be people with different skill/knowledge levels, right?
I'm trying to figure out how he misspelled "Zwangsturbeng" "Zwangs" would mean "by force" but "turbeng" is not a word and I can't think of a word that is spelled similarly
Did this to a buddy of mine. We try to play once a week and I had a great opportunity to use en passant put him in check and then check mate two moves later. The look on his face was “what the fuck?” Looked it up after the game and just said “that’s fucking awesome”.
He did it. He Googled en passant
did the boss know that it was forced as well?
I took so many matches in my regionals utilizing this.
Now I'm really interested to know why it is legal seeing how balanced chess moves are in general
It’s only legal on and directly after the first move of the pawn. So pretty specific. If white made any other move they would not be able to en-passant at a later time. Also I believe it’s only if the pawn moves out two blocks. (Kinda similar to how restricted a castle is.) Also additional fun fact en-passant is French for “in passing”
