That dude in the video was calling Bonnerworth Park "sacred space" lol. This shit is tough to listen to

Flame_retard_suit451

No tougher than listening to the 74 year old on his 4th pacemaker talking about how pickleball saved his life and therefore we should have tournaments.

ManifestedTruth

I dont think those things are comparable. One is advocating for physical fitness in later years of life. Another is calling a shitty open field that is 1.5 km from a Circle K frequented by drug dealers and prostitutes as a "sacred space"

Maleficent_Funny6989

I live right by there it’s not sacred but it sure as shit isn’t a drug and prostitute park. It’s an open field for baseball. Tons of kids are there at the skate park. We fly kites there all the time or walk our dog.

ManifestedTruth

I didn't say that. Please read my comment again. Yes lots of people (not just kids) use the skatepark. The field is underutilized and development is appropriate. 16 pickleball courts may not be appropriate, however studies are being undertaken to determine what is appropriate. I live in the area and support the development based on the conclusions of studies (to which OP told me to die in a house fire a few months ago for lmao)

Sayello2urmother4me

The thing is it’s millions of dollars spent on a games right now when we’re lacking essential services. The council just showed their ignorance by pushing this forward

ManifestedTruth

Ok. Fair. Let's agree Bonnerworth Park sucks and it is not sacred space lmao. People are starting to lose their marbles here and it ain't a good look

Chris275

Pickleball won’t solve those lost marble issues, affordable housing might.

ManifestedTruth

Yes. Not installing pickleball courts will resolve the housing crisis 🙄. 4.4 million is chump change. Thats the value of 4 to up to 10 (if theyre trash homes) of the NIMBYs homes living to the west of the site. Give me a break

Chris275

Well in that case why not give them 4-10 courts and no extra parking? Why pave greenspace more than needed? 16 is too many for 4.4mm

ManifestedTruth

I don't think that's a bad idea! Let's see what the studies say and what council decides on!

Chris275

lol they made this decision without consultation, that’s a bullshit response and you know it.

Flame_retard_suit451

He's advocating for a tournament facility. He says Peterborough is a great place to retire, but spends half the year in Florida. Perhaps he doesn't know or care that it snows here in the winter making the courts unusable a good portion of the year. This friggin pickleball thing stinks and it's looking great on the Mayor ("I'll cut you like a turkey") and the rest of his cronies.

ManifestedTruth

Ok

RupertPsmithy

You mean the same folks who think putting 16 courts where there isn't enough space for large parking and the side roads nearby the city can't even fill pit holes will somehow bring in tourism to the city?

ManifestedTruth

Not quite sure what you're trying to get across as it relates to my comment. Will you please elaborate? Regardless, it is my understanding 16 courts have not been finalized and efforts are currently underway to understand what is appropriate for the site

I’ve lived in this city my entire life, and I’ll be lying if I didn’t admit that I knew one day my beautiful Peterborough would be destroyed by Pickleball It’s funny how Peterborough is always a one issue town. Farmers market drama, new twin pad arena, radioactive pellets at GE. These same people just move onto the next issue they can find to drag this city back in to the dark ages.

poison_ivey

This isn’t a one issue town. There are too many people without social supports, too many homeless, not enough doctors. The fact that the city is looking at spending millions of dollars on Pickleball Courts when there are real issues affecting all of us is a joke.

LifeRemarkable1840

These same people??? Your view is very narrow and punitive. These issues have been very important to many people and affect their lives in horrible ways. Maybe "these same people" happen to be the ones who take action when the City is doing something that stinks! They get off their rear ends and try use their voices to correct wrongs.

ccccc4

I read in the citys own document they recommend locating the courts in a maximum number of 8 and at least 150 meters of residences. The same document recommends 16 courts within 15 meters of residences lol. Can't make this shit up

Flame_retard_suit451

>locating the courts in a maximum number of 8 and at least 150 meters of residences. Written by a policy dork that's paid to understand things like zoning bylaws. >16 courts within 15 meters of residences Added by someone that doesn't understand those things.

BornHandle2970

4.4 million would be great for the condition of the roads, but what do i know

RobSk8z

Just fill the park with a bigger, (more usable on all levels) skate park and pump track for EVERYONE to utilize. The park we have now was built many many years ago and seems to be for more advanced riders. With a more spread out park a lot more people will use it.

ramdmc

Can someone please make F🖕ck Pickleball stickers.

NoChilly84

Those questions are honestly embarrassing, it just reads like a bunch of busybodies who don’t like change. Green space? Why so many? Think of the children?! Get a life, let people exercise, and let’s have something cool for kids to do outside.

Flame_retard_suit451

>let’s have something cool for kids to do outside. Do you mean like a skatepark and bike track?

MountainSalty9650

No, kids like pickleball and playing bridge and backgammon with a stiff Pimm’s Cup at their side! Get with the times!

Flame_retard_suit451

Shuffleboard I could get behind!

MountainSalty9650

Bring back Lawn Darts!

MisterTacoMakesAList

But the real ones with the metal tip and not those "safety" ones they introduced in the 90s.

num_ber_four

So are they suggesting that they plan to charge user fees for use of the courts?

rjhelms

At one of the recent council meetings where Bonnerworth came up, staff said there would be user fees. Like for other sports fields, it’s free to just walk up and use, but there will be a fee to book for exclusive use.

Midori_Schaaf

They call it a tournament setup, but I see luxury homeless campsites.
