The bosses of ADB lead and incredibly sheltered life here, Sari-sariling driver yan on diplomatic plates pa, so they won't have to worry about commuting. Ever.
Yeah that's what I heard. That station is supposed to be near Robinsons Galleria. But SM lobbied to have it near building A para more foot traffic, without thinking kung paano sya iintigrate sa sidewalk properly.
Found out the hard way nung galing akong Galleria tapos naisip kong mag MRT papuntang Shaw kasi pagod na ko. Kaya OK lang gumastos nang konti.
This is the result of Car Centric Infrastructure, the pedestrian space was set aside, while giving more space for cars. A sidewalk should be wider enough and also, bike lanes similar to Iloilo where Bikers and Pedestrians can share this path.
r/fuckcars
For this specific station of MRT, walang kinalaman ang "Car Centric Infrastructure" diyan. That part of Ortigas ay matagal na may pedestrian lane even before the MRT and the roads were widened going in. It started with 2 lanes from the outer most and was actually extended by 2 more lanes going in the inside. So no, you cant blame cars for this, blame SM.
The culprit for this specific part is Henry Sy and SM Group. If you traverse this part of EDSA you may notice how close MRT Shaw and MRT Ortigas are, as in literally walking distance lang and are the two closest MRT stations to each other. The original plan was to have MRT Ortigas as an underground station that connects directly to Robinsons Galleria, similar to MRT Makati and Glorietta/SM Makati. Henry Sy and SM fought tooth and nail para hindi maituloy and to position it near SM Megamall that's why it's located where it is now. Compare how wide the middle of EDSA is along Robinsons Galleria with that of SM Megamall.
In addition, during the planning of the MRT it was still during the Cory and Ramos administration. The construction of the MRT Ortigas station near Robinsons Galleria would have resulted in the EDSA Shrine being removed due to structural reasons. It's safe to assume that this might have also had somewhat of an effect kung bakit hindi naituloy and MRT Ortigas station dun, heck, Henry Sy and SM might have also used this as one of their reasons why it should not have been built near Robinons Galleria.
The Asia Development Bank was also not helpful at the time since it refused to give a single inch of space to accommodate the MRT Station. Since ADB was a "quasi-sovereign" entity, the PH government couldnt really enforce any right-of-way ruling or law on them.
This is also my theory. If you've been to Ortigas, one weird thing you'll notice is that napakalayo ng Ortigas Station sa Ortigas Avenue. Actually, there's no need to remove the EDSA shrine. It's as if the station was really supposed to be there.
This theory also works for the LRT 2 extension. May station dapat sa harap ng Ayala Feliz (halata na meron cause Ayala bought the land across the road, adding a transport station there in anticipation that there is a statio between) but I heard the nearby SM Marikina had that hexxed. Sovrang convenient pa naman station dun cause papuntang Pasig yung intersection dun
Oh yeah, I'm also familiar with that place and that theory is likely to be correct. Pero at least sa case ng LRT 2, it's not that obvious kase parang equidistant naman yung Antipolo and Santolan stations with the station malapit sa Santa Lucia. Ang lala talaga nung Ortigas Station kase napakalayo na nya talaga sa Ortigas Avenue that halos magkadikit na yung Ortigas and Shaw stations.
Also, I heard another story somewhere in which the station was supposed to front Corinthian Gardens but the homeowners didn't want, hence the awkward positioning of the Ortigas Station - but the Galleria vs Megamall thing also made sense...
Road widening over making better solutions for walkable city is car centric idea.
So you can say, combination ng politics and car centric love ang rason.
Oohh. Okay! So this story validates the other story that Gokongwei and Sy used to fight over the land where Rob Galleria is situated now. So we can assume na it Sy's turn to one-up naman si Gokongwei over the foot traffic brought by the MRT.
Grabe. F these tycoons.
Well shucks if "car centric infrastructure" has nothing to do with it then surely it'd be just fine to eat at least half a lane of EDSA to the left of the stairway so the sidewalk could accommodate more people walking abreast, right?
MRT was poorly planned.
Lobbyists, funded by the auto &/or energy elite, almost certainly bribed local politicians to approve those car-centric infra projects; the same as they did everywhere else.
Fuck em all.
+1 we don't have mass transits from provinces to the capital. We don't have cargo trains from provinces to Manila.
Malamang lahat yan dadaan sa kalsada.
Focus should have been to discourage people going to Manila, pero ano ginawa? Nag reclaim pa sa Manila bay.
Our largest port is in Manila. Most of our international flights are in Manila. Ferry to Visayas? You have to pass thru Manila. Even the best hospitals and educational institutions are in Manila.
I've never lived in Luzon and have spent now 9 years living in Negros in the Visayas. I imagine my experience and perspective of the Philippines must be wildly different from what it would be if I had spent those same years anywhere near the Capital region. The whole economy revolves around that concentrated area.
The one thing I'm envious about for the northerners is that if you have money, it must be a LOT easier to find things/services you want.
Work requires me to go up north so I don't stay in Manila for the whole year. While it is true that everything is in Manila, it is a curse to live in such a city.
Everywhere is so dense that people enjoy the small gardens in the malls. Everything takes time if you live in a condo there is even a queue to use the elevator. Worse of all is the commute time. Imagine wasting 1 to 4 hrs of your waking time in a congested traffic.
I think it is really unfair to say that car ownership is the root cause. Wala naman ganyang problema sa probinsya.
You mean the geography of not being able to stand up to rich people and take their land for the public good?
Edit: Government sure doesn't seem to have issues taking land from poor people.
To be fair, true. Lapad ng Central Luzon e, as well as the industrial giant that is CALABARZON, tapos lahat dadaan through that teeny tiny narrow space that is Metro Manila.
Unlike Metro Davao that can sprawl up to the edges of Mt. Apo and Metro Cebu already spreading its sprawl, Metro Manila is basically stuck there, hindered by the Sierra Madre, Manila Bay, and Laguna de Bay. Hence they have no choice but to build up.
How is it unfair though? Yea we know na yung iba nagkotse lang naman primarily because sawa na sila sa pamatay na commutes, but come on, 70% ng congestion sa EDSA since 2012 e puro private cars. Same case in other cities, like sa Fuente O sa Cebu.
Because walang railway sa probinsya. Wala rin ganyang kalupit na traffic. and there are places na wala kang choice kundi gamitin yung kotse mo or rumenta ng trike/motor.
Diba unfair yun?
people planning these, own cars. they only can plan what they experience. if they experience public transpo it wont be so shitty. but still fuck car centric planning. Lahat tayo may paa, pero hinde lahat may kotse.
Cars are just tools to help us.
Can't really blame people for buying cars if there are no better alternatives in our country.
I think its better to hold the government officials accountable. If the government just consulted the proper know-how instead of focusing on corruption of funds, then our urban planning would have been better. People who are supposed to plan this needed to have the skills and certifications regarding urban planning, so it doesn't matter if they have cars or not.
Having cars and having a city can go hand in hand.
Just look at more developed cities like Tokyo or Singapore.
Oh of course I'm blaming them. People buy cars in the first place because public transpo sucks. But because a lot of people now have cars, it makes the public transpo more shittier. It's just an endless cycle. They need to make people dont want to have cars because public transpo is so much better and efficient, which i feel won't happen in our lifetimes. Majority of people are so happy and proud of a fuckin skyway they will never ever use, its baffling.
This government will never listen or hire someone who actually knows what they're doing. The dolomite beach fiasco was an example. Tons of my urban/environmental planning professors from college hated the idea, the constant refilling of it alone is a logistical nightmare. But it still pushed through. People who know better were shamed for knowing better. No wonder people who actually care or are competent don't want to serve our country. It's a sad reality.
CE here who majored in transportation. Basically kinopya lang natin yung transportation code/manual natin sa US kaya car centric. D parin siya fully converted to cover PH needs, I believe.
Agreed. There are a ton of other examples that shows the city planners are not very forward thinking. Powe and cable poles in the middle of roads, massive deficit in disability ramps. It's like they just look for the easiest way to accomplish the bare minimum and do not give AF about the public.
And sadly the Filipino people just accept it.
I think they deserve better.
Which is why the comment you're replying to is blaming car-centric infrastructure aka THE GOVERNMENT who is responsible for that and not the car owners. Jesus fucking Christ dude, read.
I wish it was as simple as that.
Have you noticed that the stairs face in the direction of Robinsons' Galleria? No stairs facing SM Megamall? Guess who was the favored oligarch when MRT-3 was being constructed...
Yung MRT-7, oligarch-influcenced din ang location of the stations.
Edit: Ignore me - someone has a more detailed story: https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/10xkygl/comment/j7thail/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
BUT NO! EDSA NEEDS YET ANOTHER LANE TO ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC!
there is limit to road widening without destroying the road hierarchy system. You canāt just widen a street road to a 4 lane collector road without considering the cost and the traffic planning behind it.
The problem is not cars. Cars are great. It brings a lot of economic development and convenience in traveling. The problem is how people design cities
We keep building subdivisions way outside metro manila just to have a job in Manila. And without an efficient public transport, ease of access to basic needs, job opportunities to a nearby area at home, etc. you are left with people forced to use cars just to do their daily lives.
This is the same with businesses building shopping areas far from residential areas. Just take Daang Hari for example, a lot of villar subdivisions but for you to get essential goods, you have to travel a few kilometers using a car to reach Evia where a supermarket is located.
This is on top of corrupt public works practices like building overpass, above grade stations like LRT, etc. that takes up spaces even further on pedestrian walkway. Like, why build an inconvenient above grade station when you can make a two or three story station like a normal building do? Just look at the railway stations in Japan, itās very rare or not all youāll see an overpass just to get to a station. At most, the station is an integration of a community center and a shopping district. Shops below and the platform is above. Here? Well, you only have to look at MRT just to know what Iām talking about. And subway access there is like a network of sidewalks of its own, donāt want to walk above ground? There is a shopping mall below that connects to a subway station. So pedestrians arenāt congested just at grade but there are also walkways aka ekimalls below. And even if subway stations are directly connected to ground level, it takes up space in a parking slot, not in the middle of a pedestrian sidewalk. Here? We donāt do that. More overpass galore. Just look how blatantly obvious the corrupt practice the EDSA busway is. You need an overpass just to get to the station and you need another overpass just to build another station
See? We blame cars for everything but in reality, cars are not the problem. Itās how we design cities that are the problem.
globalist agenda that's plaguing this sub, they don't realize that without cars that place is going to be more crowded because the way that station is placed is shit
How many years has it been since Ortigas station constructed and government not lifting a finger to improve the pedestrian situation there?
Government too cheap to buy a meter or so of Poveda school property?
ohhh so it's ADB I thought that part was still Poveda. Thanks for the correction. damn, 1999 is a looooong time ago.
But yeah, them a-holes won't budge..and government too weak to cast "eminent domain" card lol
may sumasabay pang mandurukot jan pag gabi......
I've worked near Ortigas for a year and hated every day of my commute. I've been saying this since and until the day I die, ortigas is a living hell.
More like Megamall A station rather than Ortigas station. That's what happens when malls dictate, or rather bid, for how the station should be closer to their mall rather than their actual intended location.
Lots of talk about lanes but also kay ADB yung wall di ba? Isn't there some way to get them to push back the wall? Surely, some government agency can negotiate and isn't ADB you know... All about development?
Here is the google map street view of it
https://www.google.com/maps/@14.5881572,121.0569514,3a,75y,103.25h,88.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1saNpuOxy3p49ak6TbqbSotg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
If someone asks you "how do our filipino politicians love us?" Show them this picture of the Ortigas sidewalk.
what if we just remove one lane of cars at that particular area so the flow of people is smoother. I mean it's pretty clear the density of people per square meter is higher on the sidewalk than that of on the highway.
You have no idea how long Ive been waiting for someone to pick this up on this sub. I go through this station everyday and you should see what happens at the 5 to 6 pm rush hour. There's no "guy". Sometimes you have these people having to squeeze across each other just to pass through. Its insane!
Naalala ko nung holy week 2022 talagang binarag namin yang guard rail. Walang magawa enforcers eh. Dami naming galit, we occupied the edsa lane again. Fuck cars. Walang MRT, walang carousel. We walked.
>Bike lane and pedestrians can share the path
This would result in accidents and would be a bad idea. Cyclists aren't supposed to be on sidewalks any more than cars aren't supposed to be in bike lanes.
Medyo off-topic. I donāt even know saan nila pwede ilagay yung alignment ng MRT-4 around EDSA-Ortigas. 100 meters underground? 1km away from MRT-3 Ortigas?
What the heck? Has it really gone this bad?
I lived around Manila about 7 years ago and I pass through this area several times (also in Kamuning area near GMA) and it never has been like this.
This country is going to sh\*t.
The real question/blame should be why isnāt the Ortigas station along, you know, Ortigas avenue?
Did SM want the station closer to Megamall? Or did ADB/Robinsonās/etc. not what a station near them?
Because if you look at it, itās clearly a poor place to have the station - on both sides of the Edsa.
10 years ago I pass by this area daily. Itās truly unbelievable no one has bothered to address this. Totoo talaga na unless policymakers are not affected by a situation, they wonāt act on it.
life hacks hahahaha
Lahat ng mrt station instant mapanghe. Fuckup governance talaga
Hahaha. Tangina super taas din nung hagdan
pampagising, tipid ka sa coffee every day you commute
Same. I hate that overpass.
2nd highest peak after Mt Kamuning Traverse
huh? di ba pwedeng dumaan sa edsa central mall?
Usually 10 am bukas ng edsa central mallā¦
Bus is a far stretch since nasa other side yung bus lane. A truck is a possibility though
hashtag resilience
Ano bang pinaka magandang solusyon dito?
As I see it, either widen the sidewalk or create an elevated one like in Ayala.
They won't concede anything. Source: supplier kame rito noon
Ironic kasi i think a higher up in ADB commented on the commuter situation in PH before
The bosses of ADB lead and incredibly sheltered life here, Sari-sariling driver yan on diplomatic plates pa, so they won't have to worry about commuting. Ever.

Any source on the problems caused by ADB? ADB help solve problems on those areas just curious kung saan mo nakuha ito.
Sobrang tagal na to. Nung nagaapply pako ng work dyan 2013 pa yun ganyan padin. Lol
Akyat ng hagdan, baba sa kabila. Yan ang ginagawa ko lol
Ako ren, para lang walang makasalubong.
Probably an elevated walkway connecting the station to Robinsons Galleria.
Third world problems using fourth world solutions.

Nung bata ako I dreamed of seeing just a big long covered walkway linking Galleria, Megamall, Shang, and MRT. How easy and yet how hard haha

The geography itself is a curse too
You mean the geography of not being able to stand up to rich people and take their land for the public good?
> I think it is really unfair to say that car ownership is the root cause No one is saying that, though?
Minsan napapaisip ako kung pinag-āplanuhanā ba talaga.
people planning these, own cars. they only can plan what they experience. if they experience public transpo it wont be so shitty. but still fuck car centric planning.
D parin siya fully converted to cover PH needs, I believe.
r/visitthesubforaminuteyougoober
why not both
Sorry, was focused on the r/fuckcars when I made that comment.
Edit: Ignore me - someone has a more detailed story: https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/10xkygl/comment/j7thail/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
no, this is the result of putting unqualified people in charge of city planning.
BUT NO! EDSA NEEDS YET ANOTHER LANE TO ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC!
Lol
Sige po ikaw na lang sisisihin namin, jk pero bakit ba pinapalapad ang mga daanan? to give way for cars diba?
there is limit to road widening without destroying the road hierarchy system. You canāt just widen a street road to a 4 lane collector road without considering the cost and the traffic planning behind it. The problem is not cars. Cars are great. It brings a lot of economic development and convenience in traveling. The problem is how people design cities We keep building subdivisions way outside metro manila just to have a job in Manila. You need an overpass just to get to the station and you need another overpass just to build another station See? We blame cars for everything but in reality, cars are not the problem. Itās how we design cities that are the problem.
Puro road widening at mga kotse sinisisi nyo lol.
globalist agenda that's plaguing this sub, they don't realize that without cars that place is going to be more crowded because the way that station is placed is shit
How many years has it been since Ortigas station constructed and government not lifting a finger to improve the pedestrian situation there? Government too cheap to buy a meter or so of Poveda school property?
Since 1999. Poveda isn't the problem, it's ADB and those assholes won't budge.
ohhh so it's ADB I thought that part was still Poveda. Thanks for the correction. damn, 1999 is a looooong time ago. But yeah, them a-holes won't budge..and government too weak to cast "eminent domain" card lol
I just did that yesterday! Minsan naman, pag galing Galleria, I'll just take the escalator up to the 3rd level then baba ng stairs.
Lots of people suffer for the city designed for the privileged few.
Your only options: narrow sidewalk at ortigas station Or Stairway to heaven at shaw station
So beware po
And this is exactly why I refuse to apply at any company based in Ortigas. Hassle masyado, kapagod pa akyat-baba ng hagdan.
Shaw ka bumaba lol malapit lang
Tapos lalakad ako pa-Galleria? Di bale na, āno.
Hahaha pati pila trapik e
Meme worthy talaga PH, PTNGA LNG
I've worked near Ortigas for a year and hated every day of my commute. I've been saying this since and until the day I die, ortigas is a living hell.
Oh my gosh! Yung anxiety ko talaga pag dumadaan dito.
More like Megamall A station rather than Ortigas station. That's what happens when malls dictate, or rather bid, for how the station should be closer to their mall rather than their actual intended location.
THE ONLY REASON WHY I DONT GO DOWN AT ORTIGAS STATION: Pagbaba mo tapos lalakarin mo yan. PANGHI
Lots of talk about lanes but also kay ADB yung wall di ba? Isn't there some way to get them to push back the wall? Surely, some government agency can negotiate and isn't ADB you know... All about development?
Parang school yan, not ADB
Poveda ata naiisip mo, which is the next block pa, nearer to Galleria.
my first time walking there i thought im going the wrong way.
Main reason kaya nag-resign ako sa work. Idagdag pa yung sobrang habang pila sa sakayan ng EDSA bus carrousel tuwing rush hours.
Here is the google map street view of it https://www.google.com/maps/@14.5881572,121.0569514,3a,75y,103.25h,88.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1saNpuOxy3p49ak6TbqbSotg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
If someone asks you "how do our filipino politicians love us?" Show them this picture of the Ortigas sidewalk.
what if we just remove one lane of cars at that particular area so the flow of people is smoother.
We walked.
It's been years since I worked at Metro Manila yet I still remember this particular gap vividly. To think it still there and got this worse.
i don't think i've ever passed by that spot when it's busy but bruh is this dumb distopian HAHA
what the fuck
Tanginang yan.
Me having no choice kasi this area ako nagwowork. What makes it works mapanghi ginagawang public urinal
Human stop light. Peeleepeens
Band aid solutions
Image you can smell.

bike lane? what bike lane? /s
>Bike lane and pedestrians can share the path This would result in accidents and would be a bad idea. Cyclists aren't supposed to be on sidewalks any more than cars aren't supposed to be in bike lanes.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Since this is a major highway and there are only a few bikes compared to vehicles and pedestrians, then the sharing scheme kinda sounds good.
I mean, that narrow sidewalk existed way before the bike lane was implemented. Dapat dati pa napansin yan when MRT was conceived.
As it is saktong sakto lang yung space para single file dumaan.
this pic feels so dystopic for me
Imprastrakturang Makatao >>> Disiplina
Puro nalang band aid solutions. Fuck this monkey country.
Why are they still wearing a mask ?
Bawal na po ba magsuot ng mask?
Mapanghi kasi tlga jan
Medyo off-topic. I donāt even know saan nila pwede ilagay yung alignment ng MRT-4 around EDSA-Ortigas. 100 meters underground? 1km away from MRT-3 Ortigas?
Tangina Grabe naman
Buti nalang talaga, I decided not to work anywhere near that area.
Joketime amp
Stampede precaution on that cramped place
Legit to? May enforcer na? š dati pakiramdaman kung sino mag give way..
Effin Ortigas Station
Not to mention the worn down sidewalk. You can feel the jagged stones through your work shoes.
wtf sobrang lala nito T\_T
they should add more trains and train stations and then widen the sidewalks.
This is why I go down, then up the opposite platform, then down again to go to Mega.
I mean- it's so smol
Wlang mg aayos jan wlang politickians kasi dumman jan
Reason I don't go SM Megamall anymore even taga shaw ako galing sa work
What the heck? Has it really gone this bad? I lived around Manila about 7 years ago and I pass through this area several times (also in Kamuning area near GMA) and it never has been like this. This country is going to sh\*t.
Pag nilagpasan mo yan beating the red light ka ba?
The real question/blame should be why isnāt the Ortigas station along, you know, Ortigas avenue? Did SM want the station closer to Megamall? Or did ADB/Robinsonās/etc. not what a station near them? Because if you look at it, itās clearly a poor place to have the station - on both sides of the Edsa.
10 years ago I pass by this area daily. Itās truly unbelievable no one has bothered to address this. Totoo talaga na unless policymakers are not affected by a situation, they wonāt act on it.
When portfolio is not needed hiring civil engineers that worked in industries that deals government proj, incompetence crawls to the top.
