Hosercles

Time to open your own tobacco shop I suppose.

WASTELAND_RAVEN

I just don’t understand why so many guys “collect” to this extent — I mean good for OP and all, I’m def jealous a bit, but in the same vein why buy more then you can use lol. This happens in nearly any male heavy hobby I enjoy, I.e. whiskey, collectible, etc etc

wolffromsea

In this case it kind of makes sense to me. Once you buy a tin, the price is locked to that year. Tobaccos are rising in cost every single year, and it you can age it to boot. Not to mention that some manufacturers have dropped off, gone out of business, what have you. I will probably do this one I have a decent enough incoming

BigUgly82

Exactly right. Tobacco won’t ever be cheaper. I was also someone who lived in a state that banned internet sales/shipping. (WA). Luckily I moved out of state and don’t have that problem anymore. But having a stocked cellar means you buy all you’ll ever need and you’re unaffected by price/political changes.

PerformanceSmooth392

Banned in my state too. VT

Former_Specific_7161

So sad to hear that. I started smoking a pipe when I lived in Winooski VT and had many good smokes while hiking there and sitting along the shore of lake Champlain!

WASTELAND_RAVEN

Fair point, but how you gunna smoke all that? lol

PerformanceSmooth392

Well, I'm 54 so it depends on how long I live. I really don't buy much anymore but honestly, I've been smoking 2 readily available blends almost exclusively these days....SPC Jazz and Sutliff Virginia with Perique! Go figure? Now I'll stock up on those till my taste change. That's the whole point of my post! It's never ending. But now I'm addicted to buying pipes!!!!!

PerformanceSmooth392

No need to be jealous. I imagine most people who are seriously into the hobby accumulate a great deal over time. I bet people like Pipestud, Mr. Jimmy and those old dogs have 1000s of tins.

BigUgly82

Over time and for the rest of your life. It only gets better if you take care of it.

legranddegen

Ask any Canadian if they regret building up a massive cellar.

BigUgly82

Exactly

Proliferant

Not if it's more than someone will smoke in their lifetime? Also, this is money locked in a relatively illiquid product that will see limited gains in the timeframe we're cooking at, compared e.g. to a basic portfolio of stock and bond ETFs. Even with online sales banned somewhere, it's not like there'll never be an opportunity to buy more.

wolffromsea

Capstan blue is 15 where I live, 70 in Canada. You tell me if it isn't worth it to stock up. It is for me

Proliferant

If you've stocked up more than you can smoke in your lifetime, it's too much. In fact, we can reduce that amount by an amounts you can pick up while traveling, from visitors, etc.

wolffromsea

Exactly! It is indeed too much

PerformanceSmooth392

So over time you grow out of blends and into new blends. Example....I have about 50 KBV blends and only like 1 now. Some I keep as treasured blends that get opened on special occasions. Some blends I love ( cabbies mixture, dunhill dark flake ) and they don't make anymore so it's a good thing I did stock up. Also, the state I live in outlawed online tobacco sales and eventually the online stores will realize this! Others are seasonal releases that I buy because I'm curious how they taste. etc etc

WASTELAND_RAVEN

All good reasons - cheers to you for a good answer! Are you ever going to smoke it all? Also also, how many purchase do you think were FOMO related?

PerformanceSmooth392

No, I'll die before I smoke it all, most likely. I still get a little FOMO around xmas but nothing like in the past. Like wessex campaign dark flake was super scarce years ago so if I saw it, I bought it. Same with a few others. Most of it was just what I liked at the time that I collected deep then my taste would change and repeat.

WASTELAND_RAVEN

Glad you’re achieving your collecting dreams homie, it’s a great collection, truly -- what I was originally saying before others got a bit tilted lol. Glad you’re at least trying to smoke through it, couldn’t imagine having a collection like that and just sitting on it. Anything in particular you’re proud to have collected? Maybe special or rare?

PerformanceSmooth392

Some of the older McClellands. Got tins of #5100, xmas cheer and Millenium, but to me, the cabbies mixture, dunhill dark flake, and chacom #4 are my favorites to actually smoke regularly. The McClelland tins I liked better when fresher for some reason.

SubKreature

Apocalypse prep obviously.

WASTELAND_RAVEN

Obviously

ReneRobert

Because tobacco will never ever be cheaper than it is today, plus most tobacco's get better with age (or are likely to increase in value).

WASTELAND_RAVEN

Well some virginias get better with age, I agree with that.

P-Scorpio

Yup, I can't see the OP smoking it all in their lifetime....

Embarrassed-Pay-5428

Looks like you're well under 10,000 tins. I wouldn't be worried until then.

PerformanceSmooth392

If I hit that number, my wife will divorce me.

Yojimbe

The real twist is when she wins all your tobacco in court.

Embarrassed-Pay-5428

Well if that happens hit me up 🥰

Ootter31019

"Start"

Derfargin

Wow, I had to do a double take this looks a lot like my cellar. I use those grey totes as well. This makes me happy to see... The TAD is a serious condition. :P

PerformanceSmooth392

Olongapo! Subic Bay

filmguerilla

I’ve actively stopped myself from reaching this point, thank god. I was definitely getting bad; my local Tinder Box has been great at getting hard to find blends by Germain/Esoterica and I figured I should get them while I could. But after ten or so big bags, numerous tins, along with all the other tobaccos I get…well, I basically cut myself off. I’ve also noted that tins I got ten years ago are losing their latakia flavor, such as the Frog Morton stuff I’m now smoking up now, so I’m not encouraged to overly stock up any more.

TyrionBean

And here I am with no tins....😕

PerformanceSmooth392

I wish I had even one person to share with.

fancyawank

Head over to SpeakEasy. Lots of people to share and trade with.

PerformanceSmooth392

Thanks. I know zero people who smoke pipes and would love to have a buddy to smoke with.

fancyawank

Well, it’s all online buddies, unless you happen to live close to one of us. And you’ll need some pretty thick skin at first. At least until you show a pic like this. lol.

COMPOST_NINJA

Where are you? I’m in Rochester and love to trade tobacco!

PerformanceSmooth392

VT

TyrionBean

I used to live in VT 14 years ago. I live in Paris, France now.

Tundra98

“For the last time honey: I’m not addicted to pipe smoking, I’m addicted to BUYING stuff for pipe smoking. It’s different!”

TheTonik

If you could only pick one of those blends to use for the rest of your life, which would it be?

PerformanceSmooth392

Okay I thought about it. Chacom #4

guacamoolah

Ayy , i have 2 tins squared away. Hows it?

PerformanceSmooth392

That's impossible to answer. I would need a minimum of 10 blends or I'd rather be dead!

Nicky_Nachos

I see no issues here

Atlantic235

Wessex!

Direct-Station

That's an awesome collection. I'd probably be in the same position if 50g of tobacco wasn't $170 here in Australia 🙄 Enjoy it mate, you can now retire from buying 😄 Certainly wish I could give you a had cutting the stock back one bowl at a time. Hopefully you can find someone to share with ✌🏻

PerformanceSmooth392

Thank you, and I really wish I could send you guys down under some tins. I feel bad for what you have to pay for tins there. I'm sure it will be that way here one day as generational smoking bans are taking hold in certain US cities already.

Direct-Station

Cheers mate. It's a dying art that's for sure.

OkNeedleworker9073

So much Cringle!

PerformanceSmooth392

Smoke a bow of one Cringle vintagel every single day! Love it, though the last version wasn't as good as previous year's, but it's still very tasty.

HorrendousFanFiction

i see the problem. those samuel gawith square tins are prone to self opening, you'll want to move the tobacco from them to jars before it goes bad.

PerformanceSmooth392

I have over 50 jars, so that's not happening. I like dry tobacco. I just moved, so that's why they are in bins. Eventually, they will be stacked nicely. What sucks it that I moved them all myself cuz I didn't trust the movers!

HarpooninPrimarchs

The gold tins hold up better than the new tins is what ive read.

PipeBeard

Dat cabbies mix…

L1241L1241

Well, at least I don't feel as bad now.

383CI

A problem I wish I had.

SubKreature

Holler at me if you need to make space.

PutnamBrewandBBQ

And to think, I just went through my last bit of captain black and realized I don’t have anything left, lol! Off to the store!

spiritual_seeker

Start a local pipe club!

PerformanceSmooth392

I live in VT. It's so anti smoking here they would probably burn my clubhouse down.

PerformanceSmooth392

It's not the same anymore. Old Vermonters are gone and replaced with uber rich people from lower eastern states.

bananacaravanadium

Can you tell us the total net weight? My bet is you’ve got over 30 kg there

PerformanceSmooth392

This pic is about 65 to 70% of what I have, so I have no clue? Perhaps when I get some time, I will dig all them out and count, but how do you weigh what's in jars? I have a few bins of those, too.

bananacaravanadium

Yeah that gets trickier; you’d need to know about how much your jars weigh to subtract that from a scale weight. For 32 oz Ball mason jars I use 456 g; and for 16 oz, 262 g (both are regular mouth). My ceramic jars from P&C are about 715 g.

Vagabond_Explorer

Wow, here I thought I had a lot of tins and cigars…

revelstokejim

Wow. My Canadian options are so limited.

ProfessionalBad1836

Goals. Buy now smoke in retirement.

kroon

I mean not THAT out of hand imo As someone who loved McClelland Captain Cool but didn't realize they were going away till it was far far to late. It makes me wish I bought 20 tins of everything I loved.

KingJTB

I offer myself as tribute for you to unload that excessive tobacco that’s weighing you down. DM me and I’ll send you my address. I know, I’m very selfless, but I just want to help you out!

PerformanceSmooth392

I'll keep you in mind.

lastinalaskarn

Respect.

HarpooninPrimarchs

Excellent cellar you got there!

Individual_War6293

Wtf...nice

B_real1987

Is any of this for sale?

PerformanceSmooth392

What are you interested in? I have much more than is shown, plus about 70 jars. Perhaps we can work something out? I'm not sure if this is allowed on here, though?

SnooEpiphanies3279

Phew! I thought I was bad, but I'm nowhere near this level. Cheers to you, sir! I can show my wife this picture and hopefully she'll realize I could be way "worse."

Buttock

Listen, I know we all enjoy the hobby...but you clearly need to draw a line. This isn't healthy. Posting pictures like this for internet clout or a lark is entertaining, but what hobby could ever benefit from such hoarding?

PerformanceSmooth392

So when I retire one day and the price of tobacco is $$$$$$$ or non-existent, come talk to me. Was posted for entertainment and to show what happens over time.

Buttock

Sure, sure, I get it. I just think some people here go kinda overboard and the rest of us enable it. Trying to bring some moderation to a chill hobby.

ReneRobert

What a lame comment. There's so many tobacco's I get to enjoy because people in the pipe community chose to cellar large quantities before certain tobacco's went out of production.
