While safe for now; I would avoid suggesting Fire Sticks in the future. They're moving to their own proprietary OS next year and I doubt any option available today will work on them.
I'd argue the ONN boxes are better only if OP is in the USA. They are $20 and do 4k HDR. They also use Google TV which can be a positive or negative for some people but you can always use Flauncher or Projectivity launcher with it. A 4k fire stick is $40 for comparison.
Every Walmart should have them as ONN is a Walmart brand. I got a couple of them and they work great.
I'm not sure about the privacy of it but both should be able to be rooted as both are android based so you can install all the apks you want. But either one you are sending telemetry data to Amazon or Google.
The main ones I've heard about is Fire sticks, ONN boxes, Chromecast, and Xiaomi streaming devices. Just don't buy a random android box as those sometimes have malware. And Roku and Apple streaming boxes are locked down and Roku uses Linux I know so no apks.
> ONN boxes are only better if OP is in the USA
Can you elaborate why this is the case? I was planning on picking some up at my local Walmart to send to family in Asia.
Does it have some sort of region locking that'll make the whole device not function?
I only plan to have them use it as a cheap 4K android tv box for SmartTubeNext (Youtube) and Stremio (torrent streaming), none of the built-in TV or streaming apps which I'm sure are region locked.
Buying cheap 4K android TV boxes is a bad idea. Just get a fire stick, brand name android box from a reputable brand, or an android TV.
[Ya' know, there are ways things could go wrong with the cheap ones...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vpepaQ-VQQ)
Onn Google TV boxes are brand name. That Linus video talks about cheap Chinese no name brand boxes that usually have Android tv interfaces. Not official Google TV boxes.
I'm based in Europe and have no experience with Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. I said that you shouldn't buy the cheapos, for example, from Amazon since they're 99% Chinese spyware boxes. I could've kinda guessed that onn was a reputable brand, but decided to just relay that as a PSA.
i use "send files to tv" app that are installed on my phone and tv. then i just send apk from my phone through app.
to install "send files" on tv, try to type it in the search bar, or if you have that option turned off, you must open play store that is burried in app list in settings.
Disclaimer:
The downside of this method is that every 1000 hours you do need to hit the EXTEND button in the Dev app.
If you don't you will see all "custom" apps uninstalled from your TV.
Android TV. Just downloaded the apps. Standard YouTube app and VPN app. We use SurfShark, but any VPN available in the play store or app store on your TV should work. Just connect to a country like Albania or Moldova and bam no YouTube ads...for now anyway.
Probably you have this
[https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/wzs6hg/adfree\_youtube\_webos\_app/](https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/wzs6hg/adfree_youtube_webos_app/)
smarttube is brilliant.
frequently reminded how good it is when i visit friends that play music on youtube.. the ads are intolerable now i am used to life without them lol.

OP.....get the ONN box from walmart, then De-Google it, add a 3rd party launcher and app stores. Then download **YT alternative 'NEWPIPE**'

Works perfectly in all my LG tvs. You can reset the time counter any time you want. That way is practically always available, with no risk of damaging the tv.
Thank you, do you know if it still works? I was using a guide from another commentor and it worked for a little while, but I guess there was an update and it stopped working for ad skips.
I don't have a pihole setup myself to verify anything persay, but there does seem to be actively maintained black/whitelists on github that might at least help reduce ads.
yeah, it is great little thing. unfortunately as pihole states: https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/how-do-i-block-ads-on-youtube/253
does not work on yt, for that adblocker or modified app is required
Good luck getting a pi. They are never in stock with official sellers and scalpers buy them the instant they are to sell them off for preposterous prices on ebay.
When was the last time you looked around? recently stock has been better. https://rpilocator.com/?country=US
Anyway PiHole wouldn't work for OP in this situation as it doesn't work against YT ads.
It's just called pihole, it can be run on any computer, like other SBCs (LePotato) or cheap used NUCs or Tiny PCs or any old hardware if space is not a constraint.

Get a Amazon Fire stick, enable developer mode, install SmartTubeTV and any other APKs you feel like.. like emulators, Steam Link etc.
While safe for now; I would avoid suggesting Fire Sticks in the future. They're moving to their own proprietary OS next year and I doubt any option available today will work on them.
Yes that's a great advice, they getting rid of Android.

Fair, I'm in Australia and this setup has worked well for me. I'm curious about other alternatives too like a Android box I think it was called?
The main ones I've heard about is Fire sticks, ONN boxes, Chromecast, and Xiaomi streaming devices. Just don't buy a random android box as those sometimes have malware. And Roku and Apple streaming boxes are locked down and Roku uses Linux I know so no apks.
Shield works with Smarttube as well. It also solved an issue I had with my C2 not playing some codecs.

Yeah Probably should clarify that the "Onn" brand is from Walmart the same way the Fire Stick is from Amazon.

By cheap ones he means the Onn 4k box. Half the price of Amazon 4k. Walmart vs Amazon.
No I don't think it's region locked. I was saying that because only Walmarts in the USA sell them which sucks. Sorry for the confusion.
Does the UI look the same as in normal yt on fire stick?
It's a bit different, more options but I wouldn't say it's any harder to use.
Don't know if [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/wzs6hg/adfree_youtube_webos_app/) still works, but worth a shot.
Wow, thanks! This sounds exactly like what I need. I'll try it out later and see how it goes
Keep us updated!
It works! :)
Im using same thing on CX. Works great
does it work? if so I'll try to install it
It works :)
Does this work on C3
I use this on my LG tv and it works like a charm
Im currently using this method, and yes it works
Any methods for Sony Bravia TVs?
That's probably Android, so you can just install [SmartTube](https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube)
.......how? The only option in my TV is to open Netflix YouTube and 1-2 niche channels.
i use "send files to tv" app that are installed on my phone and tv. then i just send apk from my phone through app. to install "send files" on tv, try to type it in the search bar, or if you have that option turned off, you must open play store that is burried in app list in settings.
>open play store Don't have that. I might try searching it in the web browser
The link in my comment contains instructions on how to install it :)
Disclaimer: The downside of this method is that every 1000 hours you do need to hit the EXTEND button in the Dev app. If you don't you will see all "custom" apps uninstalled from your TV.
True, but the link has a couple ways to get by this as well.
VPN to Albania... No ads
Kodi's YouTube does not show ads and Android app NewPipe also does not show ads and allows downloads
VPN to Albania or Moldova. We use SurfShark on our TV. I'm sure others work fine
Not sure why this is getting down votes. Sounds legit. Is it because there is no one paying to advertise on YT in these countries?
It's illegal there. Government W
Nice, will try to set a router policy to send yt traffic to a WG exit node in one of those. Is there a big speed hit?
I haven't noticed it at all.
WG?
Probs wireguard
thanks!
How do you have this set up?
Android TV. Just downloaded the apps. Standard YouTube app and VPN app. We use SurfShark, but any VPN available in the play store or app store on your TV should work. Just connect to a country like Albania or Moldova and bam no YouTube ads...for now anyway.
Smarttube next
>Smarttube next Isn't that only for Android TV?
I've got it on my LG tv, can't remember how I did it though. I think I just followed some instructions I found in a Google search.
Probably you have this [https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/wzs6hg/adfree\_youtube\_webos\_app/](https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/wzs6hg/adfree_youtube_webos_app/)
Chromecasts are 30 bucks
Really not what he's asking for.
Well you can't on lg web os so wtf do you want
You're getting down voted like crazy yet the top comment is the same as yours lmfao. This site is so trash
they SUCK
I use ad blocker on my phone as a browser then cast to the TV from my phone.
smarttube is brilliant. frequently reminded how good it is when i visit friends that play music on youtube.. the ads are intolerable now i am used to life without them lol. [https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube](https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube)
install vpn on tv and connect albania server

Yep. Perfectly indeed. The last update was in last April. I am currently using it in tvs.
There is always a way
Use Albanian or Romanian VPN
How about YouTube through a ps4?
Get FLINT2 openwrt router, buy VPN in Albania, set new config, done
use pihole.
Doesn't work for Youtube, which is why you're getting downvoted.
Pihole
Pihole doesnt work for youtube YT ads are from same domain as videos, so it breaks the entire thing
I don't have a pihole setup myself to verify anything persay, but there does seem to be actively maintained black/whitelists on github that might at least help reduce ads.
yeah, it is great little thing. unfortunately as pihole states: https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/how-do-i-block-ads-on-youtube/253 does not work on yt, for that adblocker or modified app is required
The more you know 👍 [Seemingly reasonably maintained repo I was looking at](https://github.com/kboghdady/youTube_ads_4_pi-hole)
Good luck getting a pi. They are never in stock with official sellers and scalpers buy them the instant they are to sell them off for preposterous prices on ebay.
You should be able to run a pihole in docker, no?
When was the last time you looked around? recently stock has been better. https://rpilocator.com/?country=US Anyway PiHole wouldn't work for OP in this situation as it doesn't work against YT ads.

They don’t work on YouTube
1. VPN 2. Set to Argentina 3. Set up new Google account set in Argentina 4. Sub to Premium for \~2 bucks a month and no ads.
[удалено]
This is definitely the right sub for this suggestion.
[удалено]
The prerequisite for a joke is that it's funny
Now that you explained it I got a chuckle, but it didn't land. Sorry <3
You picked the wrong ~~house~~ sub fool!
Yeah YouTube Premium
we are not giving them money
Lol who recommends YouTube premium in this sub?
Another Onn setup guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pqMP939drg
Smarttube next. Install it on a fire stick or onn 4k box
i stil prefer my pc connected to my tv most
does 'playlet' work on your brand of tv?
Playlet is for Roku, not webOS
Yes. Pihole DNS server. I have one and it’s incredible. YouTube can’t detect it either.
Don't get a firestick. They have been blocking apps and shit like that lately. Onn is better and cheaper.
4k video downloader. Takes less than a minute generally and strips all ads, while enhancing resolution. Probably should use a VPN
