Same ! Download for years with no VPN. Since, no letters, no weird thing. And since i have worked for a ISP, in Canada we have no law forcing people to pay.
The ISP does not have the choice to warn you that you have downloaded illegal stuff, but it does not have laws that force the customer to pay.
It's because copyright trolls are majority from the US and they don't have any jurisdiction to enforce anything. Also ISP's used to be forced to forward all copyright infringement letters to the customer but even that has been changed. The key thing about copyright trolls though is to not even respond.

As I understand it, living in Canada myself, it is not illegal to download pirated shows or movies. What IS illegal is providing them for *upload*. In other words, you might get nailed if you torrent them, because you're sharing at the same time as downloading, but I've never had a problem going to streaming sites like FMovies and downloading directly from there.

I downloaded a whole season of a TV show and an Avengers movie in a hotel room one night without a VPN. Zero issues.
