Personally no.
MAYBE only if it came with Apps being able to use on it (YouTube Netflix ect), then I would PROBABLY try to resell my current for the new one.
They could easily make current Portal run those apps if they wanted to allow it . Maybe just maaayabe they will actually add smt like that through software updates . It's a no brainer imo lol.. gives it more value and well costs pretty much nothing to Sony
Yeah, facts. I've always said that this thing is only a firmware away from killing all the other handheld gaming devices. I think Sony has that planned for the future. Eventually, you won't even need a PS5 to use the Portal imo..we'll see
This is a big one for me. The biggest reason I bought my portal was so I didnāt have to drain my phone battery on media. Id like to use it for streaming apps as well
Ok and? I donāt want to drain my phone that I use for internet/calling/texting/GPS/banking/email/shopping/finances/notes/social media and ten thousand other things by playing games and watching media if I donāt have to.
I mean I personally would never watch Netflix or anything similar on something as small as my phone, Portal, Steam Deck, etc buuut the PS5 literally has movie streaming apps like Netflix on it and the Portal does nothing but stream the PS5 output to itself so I don't see an issue with people wanting it, nor do I see your argument against it.
The issue for me is I canāt even watch TV in my room anymore. I down sized my TV to a smaller screen and put it on my desk, so I canāt even see it unless Iām sitting at the desk - which I did because I bought the portal - so I didnāt have a bright TV on at night all the time when laying in bed. Except now I canāt watch movies, and I rarely sit at my desk at the TV anymore lol. I watch most things on my phone and Iād love if I didnāt have to.
I don't think so. I have an oled Switch and it's a nice screen but it's not \*that\* much nicer than the ps portal's . I would upgrade for better screen + bluetooth + better joysticks (no drift or possibility joysticks stop working).
Tbh wifi 6 would not really change anything compared to wifi 5 in this use case . 5 is already way faster than what portal ever needs . Guess range would be bit better but real issues with portal are pretty much all software based not hardware
100% right. Wish people would stop clamoring for it,
If you're playing in an airport, or in a stadium, sure.
Maybe in a few years when more clients are ax and more features can be turned on/used.
People have no inherent understanding of wifi6 advantages in multi client workloads in the home where 3/4s of the ax features dont do much, for throughput, latency, or otherwise, particularly for the portals *easy* workload.
Because web browsers present an opportunity for jailbreaking the device and tech companies don't want their devices jailbroken. Right now, there's an exploit in the software that allows for access to a web browser by accessing the terms and services link (iirc). We can expect Sony to come up with a way to display this info without launching a web browser.
The Portal doesn't allow access to the internet. You can't just hack a device without an interface. As I said, the Portal has already been hacked through an exploit that launches a browser. Sony is going to make sure they fix that exploit with the second gen device.
They won't . Id say I'm almost 100% confident Portal will not see 2nd iteration atleast not during PS5 era. Lets just hope they would support it with software updates to make it better instead of new model. Fix refresh difference between PS5 and Portal for starters which seems to be issue for stuttering . But bottom line is , they want to produce Portal for as cheap as possible so highly doubt smt like OLED model would ever come out unless its actually like huuuuge sales hit which it isn't even if it has surpassed what Sony thought it would sell
I know you didn't , just gave my 2cents
I hope they just keep updating it software wise and make it better and better , that's what we need not new hardware
Screen is already great imo , would only make it more expensive and it's already kinda pushing it considering it can't to anything beyond streaming .
How about allowing people to play and buy PS1 classics , PSP ? They could do smt like that with software updates to make it more than just streaming and add value to it but don't think they will š
The LCD is pretty amazing, I don't think you'd see much improvement with an OLED given the compressed video stream (it's unlikely to deliver perfect blacks etc).
What might make me upgrade is improved performance like support for WiFi 6E/7 and anything else that contributes to less stutter or latency.
lol!! I must say, I love my portal and am very glad I bought it, but the firmware it runs is trash on a level that is inconceivable, unmatched, and low key admirable from a business standpoint.
Some days I want to throw it through a window (remote play performance), so no. Then tonight I played 2 hours of Stellar Blade, parrying and perfect dodging, pulling off sick combos and blinks with zero hiccups.
The LCD looks very nice with deep blacks, so no I wouldnāt. Iād more likely splurge for an OLED steam deck.
Prob. Cause Iām a whale. But if it had a bit more functionality like easier to connect to WiFi that needs text entered in like hotels and airplanesā¦Iād buy it.
Without a substantial improvement to the remote play app in general I donāt feel it would be worth the Oled imo. If that came along with it than maybe.
Nope. Unless that version was priced similarly and fixed the stuttering issue, either by an overhaul of Sony's streaming protocols or by introducing a higher refresh rate.
I would not buy any future iteration of the Portal unless features were added.
Itās not a bad product, but I use it significantly less than I thought I would.
No I choose to get the early version of things and enjoy them for longer rather than wait for the upgrade or upgrade the one I have. I could buy the oled steam deck but Iām not doing that either.
OLED only nah.
They gotta expand what you can do w the portal.
Im hopong they go ahead and make a portal than can run native ps3 or ps4 games . That would be something i would buy
Nope.
They need to fix the micro-stutter/refresh rate issue in the current gen portal. If that was fixed, I think the device would be fine as-is.
Itās a $200 disposable peripheral (same as a DualSense controller). Throwing in an OLED screen would just be increasing the price into the realms of āproper handheldsā
Hah no. I've barely used mine and I can't see a new version coming out that could offer more than what I need now unless it could play games natively or something
No. The screen is already pretty good, but after my honeymoon phase the connection issues are just shitty.
I can have a really good day without stutters or stutterfest.
Iād stick with what I have.. itās too expensive for the issues you constantly have to deal with. Sure it runs greats when your WiFi signal is strong but one drop in signal and the screen gets all choppy before you finally lose that connection lol. Im not going to sit or stand right next to my router to play it either thatās the not the point of the device. Overall I do think itās a great addition but I wouldnāt buy it again
Yeah I would be tempted by an OLED upgrade actually. Love my Portal but I recently did a side-by-side comparison using the PoP: The Lost Crown demo and the colors were SO MUCH better on my OLED Switch, I was honestly shocked.
Man... the screen on the current Portal is so nice. I don't really think we even need an OLED. My dumbass already kind of though it was OLED if I'm being honest. šš¤£
Unlikely.
Sure, OLED would look nicer. But Iām happy with what I have.
Iād want to see price, and whether theyād increase battery life, and if I huff paint thinner and dream, add Bluetooth.
But same battery life, features and an increase from $200? Nah.
Yeah thats what Ive been hoping for ver since I got mine. Cant imagine the Portal not being strong enough to handle playing Youtube and such.
It can handle it, but it also opens up potential back doors for hacks. Something they want to avoid.
There used to be a workaround to watch YouTube and web browse on the portal, but Sony, update the software and nerfed it....š¤¬
Id like to use it for streaming apps as well
Why do you need YouTube on Portal? Is there not enough smartphone?
8 inch screen
Why do you need an 8in screen to watch YouTube? Lol
Cuz when you get older your vision goes to crap.
Your phone already does that it seems redundant
> Your phone already does that it seems redundant Which is why I bought a portal - so I didnāt have to play games on my phone
I swear yall on here want to get spoon fed and not think. Gaming and watching Netflix are two completely different things

Well the same thing could be said about remote play. Yet here we are lmao
Read my reply to the other guy
I don't think so. I have an oled Switch and it's a nice screen but it's not \*that\* much nicer than the ps portal's . I would upgrade for better screen + bluetooth + better joysticks (no drift or possibility joysticks stop working).
An oled screen, wifi 6, and color options would probably be enough to get me to buy a second gen.
Yes
Tbh wifi 6 would not really change anything compared to wifi 5 in this use case . 5 is already way faster than what portal ever needs . Guess range would be bit better but real issues with portal are pretty much all software based not hardware
6 is not just about speed, but has much more reliable connectivity
This is the reason.
If I remember correctly, wifi 6 improves latency too.
Nah itās way better. WPA3 improved security as well.
100% right. Wish people would stop clamoring for it, If you're playing in an airport, or in a stadium, sure. Maybe in a few years when more clients are ax and more features can be turned on/used. Man id do some crazy shit right now if they had an Orange Portal on sale. Canāt even find a silicon cover in the color. Sony hates orange.
AND ability to connect to public WiFi
I seriously doubt they ever allow that. My guess is that they're going to find a way to remove the browser altogether.
Why the hell not ????
Because web browsers present an opportunity for jailbreaking the device and tech companies don't want their devices jailbroken. Right now, there's an exploit in the software that allows for access to a web browser by accessing the terms and services link (iirc). We can expect Sony to come up with a way to display this info without launching a web browser.
I guess. But you donāt need a web browser to jail break a device. If it connects to the internetā¦.it can and will be hacked

I didn't say they would. This is purely a hypothetical question.
I know you didn't , just gave my 2cents I hope they just keep updating it software wise and make it better and better , that's what we need not new hardware Screen is already great imo , would only make it more expensive and it's already kinda pushing it considering it can't to anything beyond streaming . It should have more new features than that in order to convince me to upgrade.

With the same bad firmware? No thanks.
lol!! I must say, I love my portal and am very glad I bought it, but the firmware it runs is trash on a level that is inconceivable, unmatched, and low key admirable from a business standpoint.
Not at release. Maybe some time next year. They got a lot of work to do with the Portals software before even thinking about upgrading the hardware.
No
Not unless they add a browser and fix the 60hz refresh rate.
Only if the micro stutter and compression is fully resolved.
Hell no
The Steam Deck OLED is looking promising everydayā¦
Without a substantial improvement to the remote play app in general I donāt feel it would be worth the Oled imo. If that came along with it than maybe.
Nope. Unless that version was priced similarly and fixed the stuttering issue, either by an overhaul of Sony's streaming protocols or by introducing a higher refresh rate.
If the screen refreshed at 59.94hz then yeah š
They need to develop better streaming software. The current one has too much latency.
Iām actually pretty satisfied with the existing screen. Sure, it could be better - but Iām not sure it needs to be
Nah
I would not buy any future iteration of the Portal unless features were added. Itās not a bad product, but I use it significantly less than I thought I would.
Depends what other upgrade it's coming with. Oled screen alone won't be enough to get me to upgrade, i'm alright with the LCD screen.
No. OLED would be such a waste on a streaming device.
No, because the screen is already amazing now. Plus I just got the Steam Deck LCD model for super cheap. I have an OLED TV and monitor already.
Absolutely not only because the current screen is already a piece of work in my opinion.
the biggest upgrade is when we play the game natively
Would need additional features
Not a chance. Lol, the screen is vibrant enough for me when running right.
Seeing as how my portal experience has not been good, absolutely not. If they made a model that downloads my games thoughā¦.
Yes.
Considering itās going to cost more probably not.
No I choose to get the early version of things and enjoy them for longer rather than wait for the upgrade or upgrade the one I have. I could buy the oled steam deck but Iām not doing that either.
Naw
They can simply fix the existing one and call it v2 and I will buy even two of it.
That'll put price above $200. Considering i already have one and another device that'd be at $300+, thats already beyond the price of a PS5. So nope
Nah. I like my 1st gen vita, but if I only had the LED Iād still have been fine. LED looks great.
Not likely
Wifi 6E and OLED and I would absolutely buy another one
Only if it also had less lag on home networks.
No. But Iām also adamant about not upgrading my ps5 as well. Iām riding this fat bitch until the ps6.
Only if it has Bluetooth.
An oled that could play ps5 games (downscaled) natively yes. Otherwise no.
Yes I would.
NEED A CAT6 Ethernet port or USB-C to Ethernet capacity.
Yes. simply because i am a nerd.
I think they are going to hold off till a PS4/PS5 official handheld
Yes!
No. I already feel like the screen is great and graphics is bottom of my list for why I play a game
Lol YES, and please bring different colors as well. I wouldn't even hesitate to sell my current portal
With Sonys history for support on devices such as this... and with all the support they have shown so far... absolutely not !
No, perfectly happy now :)
Dockable grips, apps, and BT? Absolutely
It's too early for that imo.
Nah not needed imo.
Yes. Because I have a condition. It's called FOMO.
It would have to be 4K Oled w better battery and I might have to get that lol
Needs to have the internet browser for WiFiās that require and then maybe
No
Yes.
Immediately. And I just got my Portal a few hours ago lol
In the mid 2000s when we had the Sony store they used to sell 8inch OLED picture frames for $2499.99.
![gif](giphy|12m7mcfxLpEUgg)
OLED only nah. They gotta expand what you can do w the portal. Im hopong they go ahead and make a portal than can run native ps3 or ps4 games . That would be something i would buy
Iām good
Absolutely, I use mine enough that an upgrade would be worth it
Sadly. Yes.
Suckers
No, I will get new TVs in two years.

No. Perfectly happy with the current model
Only if it also fixes actual issues with the portal as well.
No. The screen is already pretty good, but after my honeymoon phase the connection issues are just shitty. I can have a really good day without stutters or stutterfest.
No. Maybe if it had better WiFi.

Im not going to sit or stand right next to my router to play it either thatās the not the point of the device. Overall I do think itās a great addition but I wouldnāt buy it again
Better joy sticks like the quality and size of a normal controller and Iām in. I hate the joysticks on this thing itās my only gripe.
Naw itās perfect the way it is
No
No
Yeah I would be tempted by an OLED upgrade actually. Love my Portal but I recently did a side-by-side comparison using the PoP: The Lost Crown demo and the colors were SO MUCH better on my OLED Switch, I was honestly shocked.
Man... the screen on the current Portal is so nice. I don't really think we even need an OLED. My dumbass already kind of though it was OLED if I'm being honest. šš¤£

Not unless this one breaks. They are expensive enough, I donāt need another one.
Nope. But if they released a portal thats the Vita 2 and has dedicated games and then upon launch, they abandon the whole thing. Then yes, im all in.
Only if it drops the latency down to zero. The current screen is decent for what itās supposed to do.
Probably not because it would still be a streaming device. Which would already decrease the quality in some aspect
No Iād wish them death as the original is just now having widespread availability
100% YES.
No. Other things need to be looked at before an OLED screen
Iām still waiting on cloud gaming and proper frame pacing.
Are there rumors of an OLED version in development?
No need for an OLED, the screen is fantastic as is
It is a great screen. I just have my PS5 hooked up to an OLED monitor so going from my Portal to my OLED monitor is pretty jarring.
No.
Just OLED, no. If it had internal storage and its own web browser and things along those line then I might consider it.
Nope. Cause it would cost allot more plus way more risk of image burn-in since it's used just for gaming
Tbh thats why i havent bought one yet. Im sure an upgrade is soon
Nope would need to be 4k and have better connection before considering upgrading
4k? On an 8 inch screen? No way would you possibly be able to see a difference. 1440p maybe but 4k on an 8in screen is a waste of power and bandwidth.
