LOOKS like galvanized steel and it's bonded to the brass. If so ur going to have to cut the threads. it's almost impossible to save it. If it's CPVC? Remove the cartridge first. Clear away combustible materials or douse with wster. Wet rag on brass valve body. Use pencil point Torch tip. Heat it up , peel it out. Client not paranoid, Garbage materials mixing. Or improper fitting type. Cpvc is Known defective materials. If OP was not aware before, is now. Use a proper fitting. Don't be shy, Charge for your talents. If the condition of incorrect materials was unknown prior to your attempt in good faith to render repairs, and it's factual that the cause is not the fault of OP, but original installation.

Appreciate the response. I'm well aware that CPVC is known for defective materials. Customer's lav line broke so he wanted all the cpvc removed from the bathroom while it is under renovation. I should have been more stern when I suggested transitioning materials in the basement unless.he had planned to Reno the shower as well. He wanted it out so I gave it a shot. Hindsight is 20/20 on this one, unfortunately.
