UPDATE: I shut the power off at the breaker and cleared out some debris from the top and then used the Allen Key underneath to finish unclogging whatever it was in there. After that I pushed the reset button and turned the power back on at the breaker and it worked!! Thanks again!

Way to go!

jakevschu

Start by checking if it has power to begin with? My disposal has a dedicated breaker in my fuse box, which connects to a single power outlet under the sink. Make sure that breaker is on and the cord for the disposal is plugged into that outlet?

dvadersbabymama

I don’t see where it is plugged into an outlet at all. There are some things that go out through the back of the cabinet but none really look like anything that plugs into an outlet :/

jakevschu

Should be that tan wire, but if it's running into the wall then it's probably hard-wired in. Only way to lose power would be at the breaker box in that case

dvadersbabymama

On the breaker box it has “disposal” listed beside the number 18, that’s the location of the switch.. right?

dvadersbabymama

Sorry, a tad bit embarrassed but I usually don’t deal with these things, single mama and with buying this house I absolutely do not have the extra cash to hire anyone to help at the moment.

No need to be embarrassed. No one is born with knowledge. It has to be acquired from somewhere. As a new homeowner, you’re going to want to learn how to troubleshoot and fix as many things as possible. You’re going to have to know your house inside and out. Here are some things you should know/learn. No particular order 1. Electrical breaker panel - complete 2. Main water shutoff 3. Main gas shutoff 4. AC/furnace location and emergency shut off switch 5. Sump pump location 6. Drain/sewer clean outs 7. Outside hose bibs location and shut off valves. From there, you’ll be able to figure all sorts of stuff out if you have problems. Leak in you ceiling? You should be able to figure out if it’s a leaky tub drain or a leaky shower valve/pipe. Takes time, but if you know your house, you’ll figure it out. Good luck!

dvadersbabymama

Thank you you so very much!!

dvadersbabymama

Oh and the tan wire runs towards the back but actually goes through the side of the cabinet. On the other side of the cabinet is the dishwasher so I’m not really sure how to check if it’s plugged into anything?

jakevschu

99.9% odds it's wired in then. Feel free to switch that "disposal" breaker off/on then push the little reset button underneath the disposal and see if anything different happens?

dvadersbabymama

Okay I will try that but before I do, I did use the Allen wrench/key thing to clear out what was in there (after getting what I could out through the top) and I heard a rush of water and whatever else was stuck in there but now I can’t take the Allen wrench/key out. It almost seems stuck?

jakevschu

Allen keys don't usually have anything that locks them to the screw they're turning, but your wrench may have become pinched if you accidentally twisted it at a weird angle? A tap on the handle with something hammer-like can usually pop it free again

dvadersbabymama

I got it unstuck with a few taps from a hammer! And after that I flipped the switch back on at the breaker and came back to test it out and it worked!! Thank you so very much!! This just boosted my confidence way more than I could’ve even imagined 😂

Also there is usually a little reset button in the bottom. That’s the first thing I’d check. And that it’s plugged in (if not hard wired) before I start checking breakers. If it’s getting power, and not spinning, there is a spot underneath to put an Allen wrench. If it’s clogged, first thing to do is try freeing it up from there.

dvadersbabymama

I don’t see where it is plugged into an outlet at all. There are some hoses/wires that go out through the back of the cabinet (through cutout holes) but none really look like anything that plugs into an outlet :/

humanzee70

Then it is hard wired. Did you check for a reset button underneath the unit?
