I hate to quit posting in the MLS sub because it was a hive mind whenever any political or social issue arose. A player used a racial slur on another in a game last year and you had hundreds of posters saying they should have ended the game right away. I said just do what teams have always done in that situation, have your biggest guy slam the racist with a crunching tackle and move on, and I was told it’s no good to do violence in response to violence, with the racial slur being considered “an act of violence” by those pussies.

Yup exactly this. So long as they’re being calm I really enjoy when people explain their views, especially if I may disagree. This simply isn’t possible on most of Reddit, or even Twitter despite its recent changes. Outside of PCM people just seem like they want any excuse to come unglued as if that’s the real goal.
Coming from the opposite end of the spectrum, I find that it's easier to find interesting conversations with more well-spoken leftists on a moderately openminded right-leaning sub, while also giving me some insights into some of the more disagreeable parts of the right one doesn't see so often.
Somehow, everyone putting on jester's caps in a meme sub results in much more reasonable political discussion on average. There's something to be said for that.
