The interesting part about them both is that they both "malfunctioned" due to contradictory programming. AUTO was instructed to both obey the captain as well as keep the Axiom in space, and HAL 9000 was made to "relay accurate information" whilst keeping information classified from the crew.
Both still followed their orders, just not in the way their creators necessarily intended

Except that AUTO wasnāt rogue or psycho, didnāt deviate from his directive, and wasnāt planning on killing anyone. He was protecting everyone, the idea that ONE plant means that earth is livable is a stupid idea. Earth shouldnāt be livable in that state, and thereās no way anyone should be able to stand or navigate given the lifestyle and adaptations of human during the events of the film.
AUTO doesnāt really fit in here honestly. He was just following orders to preserve humanity on the Axiom yes he did evil things but to him it was for the greater good and to follow orders. Everyone else is a dick
