Damn Webb killed Gooch’s whole family.

RecklessWiener

This is a pretty harsh comment, but probably only affects a couple guys if this were to actually happen. The aging euros will probably just call it a career (and make a shit ton of noise on the way out). Rahm, dj, brooks, Bryson, cam, reed, Jaco will be welcomed back. It gets funky for the mid tier guys like hv3, ch3, Louis who don’t have a major or owgr or much if at all pga tour status via wins.

CoolstorySteve

Who’s Jaco? Niemann?

HariPotter

Would Webb be top 12 on LIV? If he thinks there are only 6 automatic PGA guys on LIV, that almost implies he’s in that tier himself.

mcwilly

Not really. He’s not saying those LIV golfers are not good enough to be on the PGA. He’s saying that the PGA is only going to accept true stars back with open arms. Mid tier players that defected aren’t going to get to waltz back in because there’s no demand for them to return.

HariPotter

That's fair, I think in the scenario where LIV folds (unlikely IMO due to Saudi money and pride and market opening for a global golf tour), that's possible but it feels like more likely that PGA best guys continue to get raided and PGA left with OWGR ranking status and mid-tier players. If LIV guys continue to perform well in majors, going to be difficult to insist that PGA is the stronger tour. But sure, if LIV folds obviously only top top guys get invited back automatically. I think more than 6, but not everyone who left welcomed back and lot of guys who left at first were older players. I do think guys like Webb are more at risk of going extinct than the likes of Bryson DeChambeau in the future of golf.

mcwilly

Yeah LIV will exist as long as the Saudis want it to. It will be interesting to see what happens with the merger and the Strategic Sports Group stuff.

RecklessWiener

Tough to gauge since he’s been around a while, but a major, a players and 5 other pga tour wins puts him squarely with cam smith, reed and Bryson in terms of career accomplishments. He’s just not really the personality that any of those guys are.

HariPotter

Webb won his major during the Obama presidency vs those guys much more recently too has to be a factor.

bandwidth_god

these guys are going to have to pay up to get back on the PGA tour otherwise you’re basically encouraging everyone to join LIV

Prestigious-Pea7951

Interesting how no one from LIV is asking how to come back but the question keeps getting asked to pgat golfers.

Agreeable-Opening-81

Lol, dude, they are contractually obligated not to say things like that. I think the only ones who would want to go back would be Rahm and Koepka. They're the only two who really seem to care (a bit) about playing against the best and "legacy". The other probably would too if the two leagues somehow merge and it's their only choice to play top level competitive golf and get paid.

Prestigious-Pea7951

Norman has repeatedly said any LIV player can play anywhere they want as long as they’re present for the 14 LIV events. The PGAT banned these players for going to another employer. I don’t believe these independent contractors had non-competes. I can understand Mickelson because he helped draft the bylaws, but the rest took a better job. They just want in the majors.

HariPotter

Alan Shipnuck’s book LIV or Let Die goes as far as to say none of the LIV guys want back. They just want access to majors. No one is clamoring for random PGA tournament access.
