I think it's the result of tribalism and ego. They need to be the one who knows the truth and has the right information because they're so smart and brilliant. Whatever the majority of their peer group/echo chamber thinks is right is the right information. Essentially they've formed a decentralised cult whose beliefs are governed by informal consensus. There are broader parallels to mainstream society as a whole there since what is considered right and acceptable is similarly formed. The difference is it tends to be evidence based.
That's what it's like when your ego is overly inflated. If you believed something that is now considered wrong then you subconsciously tell yourself that you never actually beleived it and just forget all about it or dismiss it. It didn't happen, you never actually believed that. If confronted with evidence that they obviously did believe it, like an old post saying as much then they'll either respond with anger, lies, denial or concoct some twisted explanation that let's them ignore it. They may not even be consciously aware if they're contradicting something they've said previously.
