Tip: take photos non stop, then like 5% of those has multiple rats in focus

untimelylord

This is the real answer, and what I’ve been doing, but my results are more like 1% in focus haha

ArtisticDragonKing

Video record, then screenshot and crop the most clear frame! https://preview.redd.it/ozxoh11b5wxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae89efca312372af9c587d69704951ec27bcd063

untimelylord

This looks way better quality than my screenshots of videos!

ArtisticDragonKing

This one certainly worked the best because they were busy licking up the baby food! Maybe you could try that too :)

Igneousdustypants

So cuuuuuuuuuute

seliishere

Those are some cute rats!

ultimate prey animal owner strategy

ArtisticDragonKing

Yes, as someone who as owned a roborovski dwarf hamster (fastest and smallest hamster) and mice prior to rats I had to learn this method 😂 It worked well for my hamster! https://preview.redd.it/cbqbz6cp93yc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92de8141e417c3b8a6eece42673f8b7c87364701

That’s what I do too lmao!

louiselovatic

Record videos and then screenshot, that’s what I do for my gerbils lol

CarlLlamaface

Food-activated hypnosis.

untimelylord

They absolutely cannot sit still when they think they are about to get food! They wiggle all over the place!

CarlLlamaface

Aye, but put a treat in a rat's grabbies and they lose all ability to respond to the world around them lol. It's how I got my boys used to being handled and how I keep them still for nail clipping time.

NoLeg8755

Have you look into you camera feature if you have "sport mode" ? Almost never use my cell camera to take picture of moving pet/animal, only my Canon Rebel. But I use sport mode to take 10 to 20 picture in few second only, best for fast moving target 😅

Enclave2287

Try vibrating at the speed of light.

You can film them and then export a frame where they don't move, but the quality can still be kinda sucky. Otherwise I just take as many pictures as I can and delete the duds afterwards

PineTreePerson

When i use my camera (not my phone) I like to shoot in “sports mode” the faster shutter speed helps capture the rats as they move farrr better

untimelylord

Thank you for the actual advice haha! I haven’t used a camera since cell phones got better cameras but I might need to!

PlopTheOwl

Quite a lot of phones have this feature too. Just look for something like 'pro' setting and then you want to play around with shutter speed

qpidunderwillows

sorry i have no advice, i’m just here for blurry rats

Yeetus-Deletus-hehe

Same here

purpleitt

Video with the flash on, then screenshot

untimelylord

I’ve tried the video thing but videoing with flash on is a new idea, thanks!

Yeah you basically need to take 100 pics in like 1 min timeframe and one of them will be ‘okay’

Wdym, first one is perfect 🫨

weesnaw_jenkins

Have you tried asking them politely to stop being so speedy

matsche_pampe

I absolutely love everyone sharing their blurry rat photos here 😂

I take a video and then pause it at a nice part then screenshot it. This was from a very blurry video https://preview.redd.it/5iworc1lrxxc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=525a8e34b7413c1f5c2787ed1cf5b2c06f821c0a

Initial_Tradition_29

The all-rat remake of Jacob's Ladder looks great.

ratsrule67

I have tried using a real camera with high IsO, and autofocus, really not much better than these phone snaps. Plus the progression from you can see the face to blurry blob is pretty funny.

balrob

Use a camera with a longer focal length - so you can stand back further. Secondly use (way) better lighting. The shutter speed will increase with better lighting (I’m assuming you’re using an automatic camera, maybe a phone?).

Chihuahuapocalypse

if possible, reduce your exposure as much as you can. and wait until they are chilling or generally not moving too much, but you can try taking a video and screenshotting the part you like, but personally I find it fudges the quality or is basically impossible to find a single good frame. you can also do a shutter mode where it takes like 5 in a row

MedicatedLiver

Better lighting so it can use a faster shutter. Also, many phones you can hold down the shutter button and it will take a continuous stream. At least, AFAIK the Samsung and Pixel phones do. Pretty sure iPhones as well.

daniiiii44

best pics are when they’re eating or sleeping lol any other time is impossible

bruh_idk55

Historical-Debt8052

I'm not sure if apple has it but on android you can change the settings manually, set your shutter speed to be quicker (smaller number) and that'll help a lot

shootathought

Take video, then create stills from the video.

CrackedCocobutt

hold them like they owe you money

Squirrel_Whisperer_

Make sure your ISO is sufficiently high if you're in a dim room. Make sure to use high shutter speed. For fast moving animals you may need 1/500 or even 1/1000. Try taking bursts of pictures to increase odds of getting in focus pictures. Make sure you are sufficiently far away because if you're within the minimum focusing distance, your pictures will be out of focus. Light fill in flash could be useful if you have that feature.

untimelylord

Thank you for the actual photography advice! Do you have any advice on what I should be looking for if I want to purchase a new camera for photographing close up fast moving subjects like rats?

Squirrel_Whisperer_

You're welcome. :) It will depend on your budget. You can get an older lower budget crop sensor DSLR or mirror less camera(Nikon, canon, Sony) that with some practice can be quite good. You'll need a good lens or two as well. Prime lenses will be typically brighter and sharper. I have multiple older Nikon DSLRS like D3300 that I bought used on eBay and they produce excellent images. If you can afford a full frame camera then you'll likely get noticeably better images on low light. You'll be able to use higher ISO and it will be less grainy. You'll also be able to use higher shutter speeds to reduce the motion blur. You can get a camera like Sony A7 (I,II, etc). With a decent prime lens like 50mm/1.4 or 1.8 you'll have a solid camera. You can also look into 'prosumer' recent releases by Nikon and other companies of mirrorless full frame cameras There are also good options for point and shoot cameras that have fixed lens if you don't need ability to change lenses. All of them will be significantly better than your phone. Even this picture in manual mode on my crop sensor Nikon is far better than anything I could pull off with my phone. https://preview.redd.it/m0v0wrqdtwxc1.jpeg?width=4896&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbc321ea5d86225a5fad5ee40a134b16738d09aa I

aguynoonereallylikes

Give them food!

urmomhotbruh9509

I record and then very slowly go through and screenshot the good frames :)

CommandBlockGuru

If you have an actual CAMERA, you can turn down the shutter speed if it can, I think some phones can do it too, also with the camera, use continuous shooting and just hold the button and you might get a goot shot or two, that's how I photographed my best friends rats (Mine sadly passed long before I got my camera)

Moist_Violinist69

Not sure what you're using to take the photos but you need more light and/or a shorter shutter speed and/or higher iso. On my galaxy I can go into pro mode and adjust the iso (can make it higher to compensate for low light), and adjust your shutter speed to the highest you can where it's not too dark.

alexiawins

r/blurrypicturesofarat

Tobias---Funke

Needs more light.

ernie3tones

https://preview.redd.it/lqyu0denk0yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf70cbc7a3033c38b8c8b073dbf80498dd0d9c63 Yes! Portrait mode can help a lot. But your best bet is excellent lighting. That will help ensure a quicker “shutter” speed.

MungoZee

Take even more photos or video captures work great too! https://preview.redd.it/vvoop7xtk0yc1.jpeg?width=9369&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2baeeab8f037bb58ba5f2dd537e05cfd1f156af

hivemind5_

Get another light in the room. Yours is doing that because the exposure is too low and your phones shutter is too slow trying to pick up light. (Those photos are too cute tho lol)

Spetchen

Good lighting will mean a faster shutter speed, more likely to get them in focus. Give them treats so they sit still long enough to take the photo. Other than that, take a lot of photos and hope some of them turn out! ;)

constantly_exhaused

That’s the neat part! You don’t! Jokes aside, distract them with food or take them by surprise but it’s still near impossible with babies. It becomes much easier when they’re older and less hyper

Rocket_Poop

just accept your fate and let it absorb your being into one monstrosity

SquirrelK1tten

Take them out of their cage more often and sit with them so they become relaxed and laid back. They’re frantic when you come around for food or quick pets.

untimelylord

Oh I do sit with them out of the cage every day for a minimum of an hour, usually longer. They’re just busy little guys, I might have to wait until the young guys get a bit older so the whole group calms down.

RatTrio

Those are the ones that you will cherish the most ❤️

byagoat

This made me laugh ♡ they're cute .

ellainchainss

take a video of them and screenshot the cute moments/frames

Infinite-Amount9009

This is what my pictures usually look like too! Every so often I'll get a clear one, but only rarely.

benchebean

Hold treat

imfromflorida95

If you have an iPhone keep your “live” option on!!!

EastTamarack

Record and screenshot, that's how I got all the good photos of my girls.

TheStorMan

You need to have a higher shutter speed.

Environmental-Dot161

Change shutter speed. I just take videos and screen shot.

Scarmcg

Embrace the chaos

ps3udoph3d

idk about rats but for my mice i take videos and then slow it down and take screenshots lol. ive gotten great photos like that.

morrisseysbaby

taking videos and screenshotting is the only way. your camera roll is going to be full of shots exactly like this, no matter what

Call-Me-Ronny

You need to set a high shutter speed in your camera. Since you’re shooting indoors you’ll also need a fast lens. It won’t work on your mobile phone, unless your rats are asleep 😂

Timmy_The_Narwhal

See if you can adjust the shutter speed. Sports and wild life photography uses fast shutter speed to capture things in motion clearly.

KidneyStew

Why you asking for tips?! Looks to me like you did everything right! 🤭 I'm serious though, you took a great pic. I actually smiled. Even tittered a bit.

meowpicklez

Threaten them with belly kisses of they refuse to sit still

terot_the-f00l

tiffzoe

Vidoe, then screenshot

walkingagh

Brighter lighting. They don't like it, but that is actually the key. That or a better low light camera.

TactitionProgramming

The first two have motion blur not focus problems. Get more light and your camera can use a faster shutter speed to help freeze the action.

Platypuspenis420

Tell them to stand still...

zombies-and-coffee

Stop *trying* to get good shots and eventually they'll just happen. It worked for me at least.

sloppyattictoppy

sometimes you get lucky😭😭

OGBananaRex

AND THEY ARE PERFECT 💖💖💖🌸🌸💖💖🌸🌸😍😍😍😍😍

Kayd3nBr3ak

Most phones have an option somewhere on the screen when watching one of your videos to where it will take a video capture of the frame you are paused on

Business_Clothes9609

Wdym? These look perfect to me. Captured their persona. 😂

noxy_000

If your phone has it, try the burst shot

TriskitManaged

r/blurrypicturesofrats is a good place to show off these wondrous pictures

Technical_Air1567

Take a video and then screenshot your favorite moments in the video. It’s a lot easier to get still shots that way.
