Because no one has given you a straight answer, there are 4 missions you do with Hamish.
- 1st: You help him get Buell back and he invites you around
- 2nd: You go fishing together
- 3rd: You track a big she-wolf
- 4th: You hunt a giant boar
You receive Buell at the end of the 4th mission, so as long as you have only completed 3 or less as Arthur you will be fine.
Personally I like doing the first 3 as Arthur, so when I return as John to complete the 4th mission, Hamish tells John about his adventures with Arthur, which I think is nice.
I couldn’t get Buell to calm down and I used a shitload of stamina pep. Is there a certain way I’m supposed to calm him? Cause I tried a lot of different ways. I’m John atm. Any help would b grand.
This happened to me and it’s because i was lassoing him, he needs approaching normally while calming him. Lassoing causes him to not react and keep draining your stamina.
I'm looking forward to it, not gonna lie. Probably make me cry every time. I also hear John is terrible at drawing so I've tried to find everything as Arthur...But looking forward to John's shitty drawings as well lol

Even if he doesn't I think that makes sense and from a storytelling standpoint that's probably the most emotionally rewarding way to approach the situation.

However I can’t confirm that, as in my playthroughs I’ve done them all as Arthur, done 3 as Arthur, and done them all as John.
My man >!gets attacked by a huge boar and dies!<, the game doesn't even offer you to bury him. What am I supposed to do, leave a friend's body to wolfs and birds to feast on. Nuh, I lassoed him somehow and dragged him back to his cabin and threw him in that lake, second best thing next to getting properly buried. I killed Buell too, for that's what Buell would want as well, after his master. I'm joking of course, I kept the beast, but why would you not let us do that Rockstar

The next time I played I did a few missions as Arthur and the last one as John. You actually get an extra scene where Hamish points out the fish and the wolf Arthur caught that are still hanging on his wall.
Do not get Buell as Arthur—if you do, John will not get him, even if you aren’t riding him during Arthur’s final mission. All horses stored in the stable as Arthur vanish into the ether by the time of the epilogue.
Right after >!the death of Eagle Flies!<, I went to the stables and sold my white Arabian, gold Turkoman, silver pinto Foxtrotter and Buell. Then I stole a common Morgan and that's what I rode to >!the Aberdeen Pig Farm.!<
Here is the real deal.
You can get Buell as Arthur WITHOUT completing the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th missions.
Complete the first mission.
Approach for the second mission and ram Buell with your horse. Buell will run. Chase and jump on him (you have to chase him a little way out of the area. Jump on. Take him back to camp and hitch him to the horse station. He's now the second horse.
Save. Reload. Put the saddle on him. [Now he's your main horse and you still have the Veteran Missions yo complete](https://imgur.com/a/xgZociL)
Don't complete any more missions. At least, don't do the 4th one. Save it for John.

What's with everyone wanting buell to be with john? I preffer to get buell as arthur and get him in the stable so that he can live a comfortable rest of his life while arthur and his horse go to die together on that mountain. Hamish is arthur's friend so I want arthur to go and meet him in his last days to make them as nice as possible
People are selfish and “love” being a part of the story unless it affects their gameplay. I take Buell as Arthur, then take him to a stable to live out his years. I come by and ride him whenever I pass by. That’s what Arthur would actually do and what Hamish would want. Plus Hamish dies hunting with his best friend, and I think he would prefer that over finding out Arthur is dead. Heck at that point, you could argue he was stuck with grief and let himself die because he knew Arthur was gone.
It’s really interesting how selfish people on this sub are, even in a video game. Arthur had a huge heart, and I think some people need to play through again to learn the lessons he learned as the game goes on.

I guess technically you can find him in Chapter 5 if you ignore Dutch and all the Lakay missions. I don't really consider Lakay Chapter 5 though. But it is.

Probably all the stimulants are making him jittery, try a depressant.

Chapter 5 is on Guarma, an island off the coast of Cuba, so no you didn’t find hamish in chapter 5

By playing the fourth mission as John
Start the quests with arthur, and don't go back until afterwards. Pretty simple
Leave the 4th Veteran mission for John to do. That's it.
