Uh, anyone who's ever heard a dove has heard it cry. The coo cooo coo coooooooooooo in the early morning has heard a dove cry. If you think "dove cry" means like, crying tears like a human then you might be outsmarted by most 5 year olds.

Absolutely. I heard some right before those storms hit the South. It sounds just like two people yelling at one another. I couldn't help thinking about that song. It's talking about rain doves.
I assume it refers to the mourning dove of the US. It's a distinct sad sound, to many. And yet, still a bit beautiful. After moving to Europe, I hear the doves coo a different and less sorrowful sounding call. I assume when Prince listened to the mourning dove he reflected on the sadness and beauty of his past.

I confess I'm partial to the American mourning dove. In comparison, the European dove call sounds annoying. Sorry European doves!
This makes me realize I've never heard half of the animals in the animal kingdom cry.
It hits hard, though, when I hear a bear or other animal cry and moan when its child dies.

I'm not sure. I'm a few hours late, but happy 40th anniversary to the doves crying. 😳
Doves sound very mournful when they coo. Sounds like crying. Deep sobs.
