Based on the marks on the bolt above they may have done some suspension work before delivery and not tightened everything up. I'd immediately call the service center and have them get this all sorted out. You ordered a brand new truck (I assume) so this isn't even close to being reasonable upon delivery.
I had to bring back my R1T on the same day I got it after we discovered one of the brake lights wasn’t working. It made me wonder what kind of checklists they’re going through, if any at all.
I love mine. Bought it barely used. Even the camp speaker, which everyone complains about, works beautifully for us.
But things like this are a “systems” issue, not a calculated cost cut. I just hope they get it figured out.
We are the beta testers, I’m sure 2nd and for sure 3rd gen will have better quality control. Service center will hopefully take care of you.
I’m the oldest of 6, some say I have a few screws loose!
Sure, based off of what was learned by the first generation, just like 3rd generation will be based of off 2nd generation… that’s how technology works.
They are not doing a great job on the assembly line, but it’s an incredible vehicle. We have an early build that they dropped the ball on fit and finish. However, and this is coming from someone in the industry, the R1 line is the greatest vehicle ever engineered/assembled. It kills me to put them ahead of Porsche, but it’s true!
That sucks! Paint marking fasteners has been industry standard in the automotive and industrial world for decades as a QC and safety assurance to avoid exactly this. Rivian can do better.
Beyond this, I hope you enjoy your R1. I love mine!
This has nothing to do with cost savings. Someone forgot to tighten a bolt down or didnt apply thread lock. Some things still are done by people. Human error is always possible. I’m not saying it’s acceptable, but I highly doubt this is a systematic problem of any kind.
This is why they need more service centers and more service techs. They will kill customer good will if they keep pushing vehicles through pre-delivery inspections to keep the delivery numbers up.
I love my R1T but I keep pushing Rivian wherever possible to not make the mistake Tesla did - service with Tesla was good until the model 3 came out and it all went to crap. They were not prepared for volume and if Rivian wants the R2 to be the high volume model, they better focus on service and delivery centers now or it will be the same mistake.
When these trucks are delivered properly prepped, there are not too many issues that require service. But lately, this is not the case.
this can happen to any car and manufacturer. This is likely from someone who didn't wait for the torque gun to green light the fastening. This is a common thing too if you have no way to mark your bolts that have been torqued to spec. I know Hyundai manually marks their bolts after torquing, but others like to keep marks on components free and clean of any marks.
Dang! Yeah on day of delivery they already told me to schedule a service appointment for replacement parts as they couldn’t get the residue from the shipping protection off and other paint/body issues. That snow balled into alignment issues, way more paint issues and now cracked seals and replacement spoiler. I’m 6 weeks into my Rivian lease and it’s been with Rivian for 33 days and no loaner. Definitely not what I thought it was going to be like leasing a $90k truck. Also, no response after sending an email to customer service and corporate over three weeks ago. Hopefully you have better luck than me. When I was able to drive the truck it felt great but all of these issues with the company and service as a whole are pretty upsetting. Look forward to seeing an update where they squared it away for you.
as much as I'm impressed with the range/the drive experience of the Rivian, the overall small detail quality still needs lots of improvements...(Dec 22, 2023) is when I got my delivery, got all wheel drive issue, and now the cameras aren't working...and still haven't gotten my Tesla charging Adapter!
That’s just unacceptable. Have my first service appt next month. Have a punch list of little things to fix. I’m a little nervous and hoping for a good experience.
Not good. I have seen Teslas delivered with unattached sway bar link. It happens sometimes unfortunately but I don't think this is the norm at all. Service will get it fixed up for you.
It’s every car manufacturer these days. I bought a brand new Shelby GT500 and they left the shipping blocks in the rear suspension and it almost killed me. Ordered a brand new Raptor and it came with out all the lug nuts in one of the wheels. The paint on vehicles these days is super trash with orange peel. It’s like you buy a brand new car then have to spend $2500 getting the paint corrected and coated.
Spoke with service. They are very nice and super apologetic. I think they will take care of everything. Hopefully these incidents make future deliveries better.
Different situation but similar concern with my R1S…
Hit a bump the other day and heard what sounded like a big bolt fall between the air vents.
Almost as if someone through a quarter in there.
Continued to rattle for several minutes.
Concerning
Forgive me for asking this but did you try tightening the bolt yourself? The fix may be as simple as doing just that. That all said, you did the right thing though by taking a picture of this, and I would also bring it in to have them do a complete QC inspection in the event that they might have forgotten something else.
You don't deserve to be getting down votes. I would definitely just slap some thread lock on it and tighten it up myself as well... provided the torque specs are even available. Being without my new vehicle, for who knows how long, and all of the logistics entailed, over a single loose bolt is not good calculus to me. Yes, take pictures for sure and notify the company so you can put an ace in your pocket for the future but after that just turn the wrench and move on minutes later. For those reading this that don't feel comfortable getting your hands dirty every once in a while, "staying adventurous" may prove challenging.
Yeah, while this is Reddit and down votes flow like coffee at Starbucks, I was still a bit surprised too. Then I had a epiphany. Rivian owners have the potential to unseat BMW drivers as the self-entitled douche bags of the roadways come the latter half of this decade. I'm now questioning whether I want to go ahead with purchasing a R2 as I would not like to be associated with this insufferable prick mentality.
I'm not joking here. Fortunately there are whole new models from other manufacturers coming out in mass over the next few years. It's likely that I'll have good reason to get my $100 deposit refunded.
It’s a bolt into a suspension bushing, generally supposed to be torqued when the vehicle is at ride height. Put it in conserve, get under there with a torque wrench and crank it down to 100 ftlbs, mention it at your next service visit and they can check it out. Doesn’t have to be a tow truck affair.
It’s a brand new car. Not my job to tighten bolts. That’s ridiculous. Also looks like other work was done there. Need that checked out before doing highway speeds on a car.
You are 100% correct. I’d still fix it myself because of the lost time and hassle. But you should do what makes you feel happy and safe. I wasn’t implying that you’re making a mistake. Reddit is a super weird place.

Getting towed to service center tomorrow. Not a cool first experience. 44 miles on the car. Pretty new.
I can’t believe some of the stuff I am seeing. How can they miss that?

If some of this stuff happened on a Cyber Truck it would make headlines
This a million times.
Cyber trucks are too busy creating their own headlines with every component of that product breaking. No room for other brands
Gotta agree. I feel the frequency of these posts is only increasing which is super concerning
Rivian trying to cut costs at the expense of safety
Had my SUV towed at 60 miles for a suspension failure. Demand a R1T loaner and hopefully they don’t take 3 weeks in the shop for a simple screw
I just had a suspension failure yesterday. Had the truck about a month. Hoping to get a loaner tomorrow when they open.
What kinds of suspension failures did you folks experience?
We are the beta testers, I’m sure 2nd and for sure 3rd gen will have better quality control. Service center will hopefully take care of you. I’m the oldest of 6, some say I have a few screws loose!
2nd gen is basically a new product.
Sure, based off of what was learned by the first generation, just like 3rd generation will be based of off 2nd generation… that’s how technology works.

Maybe try to do a return

Talk to Boeing about untightened bolts…

Agree 100%. Coming from Tesla - Service was luxury treatment until the 3 and the Y came out. It was downhill from there.
Sucks but you will be fine. They’ll make it right.

Whoopsies!

I would not drive it like this. Rivian needs to do better
Its interesting to note theres not a single QC mark on any of the suspension fasteners.
I'm glad nothing severely happened to you and your family. That's crazy!!!
Oh fuck no.
It's the Boeing x Rivian Special Edition. Congrats, you got one of a very limited number of vehicles.
Clearly don't drive that!
Jesus
That’s whack. My suspension doesn’t even look like that, so I’m guessing more stuff might have came loose.
“That little guy? I wouldn’t worry about that little guy!”
How did you know something was wrong?
Felt it in the ride. Zero chance anyone at Rivian actually paying attention at pre delivery check.
Damn, was it clanking, jangly loose feeling?
Not good. I have seen Teslas delivered with unattached sway bar link. It happens sometimes unfortunately but I don't think this is the norm at all. Service will get it fixed up for you.

Looks like it’s had the upper bolt removed as well. Did they change the brakes? Something is weird.
I don’t know anything about cars. It seems something was really messed up as my service rep was super apologetic. Will see what happens.
Quality is going down.. it’ll be the downfall of Rivian. They literally can’t service the customers.
Just a spare bolt that is ready for use in case you need it
Probably one of the people let go from Tesla
Shoddy QC. I wonder what else will fail because Rivian can’t control their manufacturing quality.
Seeing a lot more posts like this after the layoffs 😕… probably not a coincidence
My mind is blown! What is your VIN number?
Damn son, you just picked it up with the FnF discount too. Hopefully they fix it fast.
lol. True. Also rock chip in first half mile. New windshield going in. Fnf discount going quick! Anyone put a film on the windshield?

If something that obvious was missed, what else was? No way I'd accept delivery without a full inspection.
I’d tighten that bolt and then enjoy my truck vs deal with the inconvenience of service visit. It’s just a bolt.
Same, but I would still demand a full inspection. This is unacceptable for any new vehicle, let alone one at this price point.
If you're wondering why society is on the decline, it's because of people like this
You’re getting downvoted for being right
It’s a bolt. It has one purpose in life.
