It's an ugly cute to me lol

riviery

There's no need for such a device, now shut up and take my money

Upbeat-Serve-6096

Anbernic's making such an obvious and cheap cash-in. No way I'll sell my unit second-hand to another poor sap.

fliphat

Yes honey 😔

pingu598

This should be the title of this sub

TocYounger

The essence of this hobby. Stay on course brothers!

Saneless

Oh good to see Leapfrog and VTech entering the SBC category

norabutfitter

I was wondering who else was gonna point out the leapfrog vibe

MechaSponge

Can Leapfrog run PS2 and GameCube at 60 frames?

norabutfitter

I mean. That sounds pretty dope. If i had a phone capable of running those i might be tempted to buy a broken leapfrog to turn it into a dock/telescopic style controller that could hold the phone to get it to work. Keep a similar vibe.

Looks like some weird mid 2000s device you'll see in mid 2000s TV shows and concept arts... I actually like it

Combination_Shot

Spot on. Pretty sure we saw this thing debut in Zenon 24 years ago.

It’s like they asked an AI to create a mid 2000s gaming device and that’s what came out.

eggbunni

It’s 1000% Sega dpad. I get major Gamegear vibes.

fliphat

I have mixed feelings

LifeAcanthopterygii6

I love and hate that design at the same time.

alanrappa

Haha. Same.

that_90s_guy

Wait, you're telling me you don't find the handheld aesthetic of a used bar of soap incredibly sexy? Also, you're going to love playing retro games on that square screen with a d-pad that's not on top. And with all the power of its T820 chip, PS2/GC games even at 2x will be breeze to run! Just don't forget you're playing those with huge vertical bezels because its not a 4:3/widescreen display. 🤦‍♂️

-ystanes-

Horizontal not vertical

Steamdecktips

I legitimately don’t understand what they’re going for. It has a 1X1 screen so it’s good for old school NES/SNES/GB games…but they put the analogue stick up top? Do these companies have a vision for what their devices are even used for? It’s like making the RGB ARC exactly like a Sega Saturn controller but it can’t reliably play Saturn.

False_Raven

I'm the loser who loves playing retro games with a thumbstick, so I guess I'll appreciate it

h0nest_Bender

Same. I prefer stick for moving my character and dpad for menus. I appreciate having both and this configuration is perfect for me.

A8Bit

I will now try this. I've never tried it but I used to love my Neogeo Pocket Color so it's worth a go I guess.

MrStu

I would pay big bucks for a retro handheld emulator with the ngpc joystick

Racheakt

I have played so much X-box, and use a 360 controller on my pc this layout feels natural now

ban_imminent

I'll join you. I use dpad strictly for navigating menus. I hate lifting my finger off the controls. Oh and fighting games, that's it.

that_90s_guy

It also has a T820 chipset that runs PS2/GC (even upscaled at 2x) easily at full speed, but good luck playing those on a square screen with the huge vertical bezels.

slowcassowary

This is what kills me. When it drops, it will be the smallest device to reliably handle PS2/GCN and will be stuck with the worst screen size for the job.

Alternative_Spite_11

Why couldn’t they just give it their 4” 4:3 display?

ban_imminent

Give it like a month or 2, they'll announce it.

MalcolmReady

Aren’t GC & PS2 still 4:3? And isn’t 4:3 on a 4” 1:1 screen is still (slightly) larger than on a 3.5” 4:3 screen?

iX1911

Yes, most are 4:3, with a small number of games offering 16:9 support. A 4:3 aspect ratio displayed on a 4" 1:1 screen will result in a 3.5" image. You can check various aspect ratios and the image size here: https://shauninman.com/utils/screens/

MalcolmReady

I had checked on displaywars and it was 3.54 but yeah

Steamdecktips

Someone needs to teach these companies about market segmentation.

Weimark

That’s what makes it hard to consider, with that chipset, price could de problematic

that_90s_guy

Wait, so you don't want to pay 2x-3x the price for a retro emulation device with a square screen that lacks an ergonomic d-pad? Or how about a compromised PS2/GC experience with that screen in a world where the RG556 and Retroid Pocket 4 exist? 🤦‍♂️

twoprimehydroxyl

I'm guessing they'll use the molds/circuit boards to make a larger device down the road that can handle PS2/GC

Puntley

This chip *can* handle PS2/GC

twoprimehydroxyl

Well I mean the same exact device, internals and all, but with a 4:3 or 16:9 screen so it can play PS2/GC at native aspect ratio.

Puntley

Oh okay, that makes sense. Yeah I really do wish it had a 4:3 screen, honestly. Same height but just a *little* wider. Of course I know the 1:1 aspect is what they were aiming for, but ehh.

Racheakt

I got the Rgb30 recently not going to lie the 1:1 is great all round size for arcade games.

that_90s_guy

That's probably our only hope. But at that point, why release such a flawed device? Just skip to the device that will sell like pancakes by making a more budget friendly alternative to the $150-180 RG556 and Retroid Pocket 4 that can play PS2/GC well. It's not like we don't already have enough square screen devices that have enough horsepower to play retro games well enough.

Junai7

I would be all over this if the dpad and analog positions were swapped.

themiracy

Can I - like I’m not trying to pick a fight - but what is it that people hate so much about the staggered layout? Way back when, the first dual stick device I used was the original Dual Shock. But controllers for OC, Xbox, and modern Nintendo are all staggered. Is the problem that you want the dpad up top to use the dpad? Am I a cretin because I use the left stick to play most retro games (even though I also actually grew up with many of these original devices)?

jmt5179

I think it's because usually the ergonomics of these devices make using whatever is at the bottom uncomfortable. So having a screen perfect for older retro games, but then the left stick on top doesn't make sense. Like the RGB30, has joysticks and that's great in case you need them, but they are relatively uncomfortable to use.

Dontreply_idontcare

You're not wrong in this specific case, but people will find an excuse to bitch regardless. This thing supposedly has a chip capable of GC and PS2, so the stick-centric layout is great for that. But it's bad for earlier 2D-focused consoles because the bottom row of controls is in-line with the top. Ok, so make a V-shaped layout for better ergonomics. Now it's too big, and everyone complains about that. The retro handheld scene is basically just an excuse for people to bitch about devices they're going to buy anyway and use a handful of times.

TheRealSeeThruHead

Gonna controller it’s usually fine. As the dpad can be used without having to hold the controller any differently. But to use the bottom dpad on devices like these you have to hold them really low and do a sort of pinch grip. It’s super uncomfortable.

hotcereal

RunSetGo

But...why?

90sWebWizard

> Anbernic became confused! > ... > It hurt itself in its confusion! For real though, the hardware makes no sense. It's full of compromises regardless if you're buying it to play retro consoles or 6th gen ones (PS2/GC). Either place the D-pad on top and use a weaker chipset to keep price down if it's a square screen. Or use a 4:3/widescreen display if you're using analog sticks on top or a chipset this powerful that can run PS2/GC easily.

ARCADE

False_Raven

RGB30 competitor

Inspector7171

It took them a bit longer than I thought it would.

False_Raven

That's true, I don't mind though. I've been wanting a RGB30 but the main reasons I didn't get it is because it looks cheap and ergonomics look poor. This seems to be better in both areas, but we shall see with the retail units.

TheJadeChimpanzee

The ergonomics of the RGB30 are fine, but its battery and charging hardware appears to have been designed by Satan. Whether it's the Unicorn or this thing, I'm definitely looking forward to a device with this type of screen that charges properly.

CellPhish

Not really more an LG Snowflake competitor

False_Raven

That's what it's called! Slipped my mind, yes it looks exactly like those custom phones.

clintonium119

I'd actually like a higher-powered RGB30. For me, the main reason is I love using shaders (usually CRT), and some of the nicest ones are too heavy for the weaker chipsets. I also don't mind the black bars for the 4:3 content, since you still, with the 4" screen, have a decent diagonal. But... I don't think I could buy a pocketable device with the D-Pad on the bottom. 95% of what I like to play makes no use of the analogs. I do think this will look sharp in black, if it's one of the colors offered.

Velocity_Rob

Got a big weird mid-2000s Nokia look to it.

A8Bit

I love everything about this except the dpad/thumbstick placement. Decent size screen, powerful enough for every 4:3 horizontal or vertical platform, looks like a sega dpad which I prefer to the nintendo style. I hope the buttons are moveable so they can be put in xinput style or I'll have to get replacements. I'll take one in yellow (or hi-vis orange) please

AdvertisingEastern34

Reactions to this device: SBC users: "complaining of dpad placement because of the more retro games friendly aspect ratio " 🤨🤨 "Me that I use the sticks even for GBA and SNES" : 🤩🤩🤩🤩

big_vangina

Me, playing GBC games fully stretched on my phone's 21:9 screen with a joystick 💪

Strong_Craft9225

Y’all are just complaining to complain. 1. If they put the dpad up top you would complain about chipset and price being too high for just retro game centric device. 2. If they put a 4:3 screen in you would complain it’s not a vertical handheld or the screen isn’t as beautiful as the RGB30. Or even that it won’t support the few ps2 and GC games with native 16:9 ratio. 3. If they put a cheaper chipset in you would complain that it’s too expensive over a RGB30. 4. Complaining because of a single color way shown for a company that always puts out multiples. Comparing it to a children’s toy manufacturer when obviously they will have different colors. Seriously can we just be thankful they are coming out with a new device that may meet someone’s needs in the community? Yes I understand you’re a purist who only uses a dpad in retro games and how dare you have to have a stick on top. Or yes I understand you don’t like bezels and you want a perfect accurate screen for every system all at once. But then just scroll past my man. Not every handheld is meant for you but someone else will honestly enjoy this device and have a million good things to say about it. Just wait until the price is announced and then we’re gonna go to the races with the derision. It’s tiring. I’m tired. Just honestly take a step back and rethink your posts. What have you created for this community? Where’s your Perfect handheld board, design, chipset, software and pricing you have pitched to these companies?

kdoxy

Seriously, folks should just be happy there are so many devices it gives people tons of options and forces all these companies to compete with each other and themselves.

BigBird0nCrack

I wanted to like this. Perhaps it's just the color way, but this looks like something Fisher Price would put out. Sorry just not feeling it.

I don't think the lack of 16:9 is much of a problem; while some GCN/PS2 games have a widescreen mode, the vast majority were designed with 4:3 as their primary or only use case in mind, and I have definitely seen demand for a device more capable of those consoles than a T618 but with a 4:3 (or close to it) screen. Assuming it's the same 4.0" 720x720 screen as the RGB30, though, it does seem like a weird choice. 4:3 systems like PS1 / N64 / GCN / PS2 only display at 3.5" on that screen, and I already see people using the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro (which displays them at just over 4") saying that it feels just the tiniest bit too small for GCN and PS2. It also doesn't have enough resolution to display at 2x scale either. For systems like GCN and PS2, it seems to me that the 4.0" 480p 4:3 screen Anbernic uses on the 405 and Arc series would have been a better choice. I could be wrong; I thought the RGB30's screen sounded weird and awkward until I saw the RGC review and realized how good it was for GBA and SNES when properly set up, and once I got one and tried it out, it turns out it 100% lives up to the hype. So it's entirely possible that there's some use case this is perfect for that I'm just not seeing. But on paper, at least, it seems like a pretty bizarre mismatch between screen and chip.

leeinflowerfields

Don't care at all for the device but very much care for that color, can we get more of it?

Halos-117

It's weird that last week we had some post about how tall screens are perfect for DS emulation and now we're getting posts about this new device featuring a tall screen... Feels like some marketing bullshit

ChrisRR

It's so weird, it just doesn't look like an anbernic device at all. I'm still wondering if it's a white label device

creaturecatzz

i love this so much. the colors and the shape of it just tickles my brain just right

that_90s_guy

Not sure if just me, but this seems like such a paradox of a **flexible**, yet **compromise-ridden** device due to the screen, analog/d-pad placement, and chipset combination. * Square screen... great for retro games! ... but why are is the d-pad in such an uncomfortable bottom position? Are you only allowed to play retro games in 5-15 minutes before the pain sets in? * T820 being powerful chip + top aligned analog sticks are great for PS2/GC games! ... but why does it have a square display instead of 4:30 or Widescreen? Games will look horrible/tiny. Also, I get they were going for an ergonomic design, but that's hands down probably one of the ugliest devices I've seen. It looks like an used bar of soap. And the color isn't doing it any favors.

AdvertisingEastern34

For me that I play retro games with the stick it would be perfect. But yeah I hope they'll improve the design

vexorian2

Being completely honest, I never really felt the problem with the position of the dpad. I've played countless of dpad games on the nintendo switch and the problem is always not the position of the sticks but the quality of the dpad (and once you grab a good joycon replacement, this gets fixed even if the stick is on top) We don't really know about this one's internals. It could be that it is actually very good for PSP and streaming, in that case I guess the sticks could make sense.

deathsythe

I kinda like this form factor tbh, I just wish the left stick and dpad were swapped. :(

ocelot08

Such an odd device. I actually really like the look. But very unlikely that it'll actually fill in a white space in the market

[deleted]

Looks like they smashed an ayaneo air lol.

Bortjort

things are gettin weird

JazzyApple2022

What other colors?

brandont04

Touchscreen?

purpldevl

This looks exactly like my sister's leapfrog from 2003.

acolyte_to_jippity

is that a gamegear?!

SeanFrank

That Dpad looks MUSHY

SinnohConfirmed

Kinda reminds me of the Leapster

Prestigious_Can809

I want a high powered RGB30 that can run ps2 and gamecube especially if it had a touch screen for DS, that would be a smash hit for me

notaprime

The aesthetic looks kinda Y2K, it reminds me of a mix of a CD Walkman and a metallic pink karaoke machine my sister had as a kid.

zodfury

Almost if you squint and turn your head to the side it looks like a steamdeck had its shins blown off in WWII.

Intrepid_Mobile

People are focusing on similarities to rgb30, the unicorn, the aspect ratio… but few just focus on its most important feature. If that d-pad is similar to what we’ve got in the rg arc, that is definitely a must buy.

tenflare

Reminds me of an early 2000s Nokia. It's has the chonk, the colour, everything.

VicisSubsisto

If that's the same D-Pad as the RG ARC, looks very tempting. I'm getting old and care more about ergonomics than looks, so I don't mind the rounded edges. Also assume they'll have a colorway other than Barbie.

MyBrosKeep

That's anbernic? Looks like a prius center console

ban_imminent

This proves that small PS2/GC devices are around the corner. And that is why I'm prepping to sell all my shit and get just one device. No a steamdeck doesn't count, I haven't worn cargo pants since highschool.

stulifer

How much is the question.

SCScanlan

Anybody see It Follows and notice the seashell e-reader thing and think "what year is this?" Those are the vibes I get.

Positive-Fondant8621

It looks like a friendly robot from a pixar movie.

Gloomy_Narwhal_719

GESH that's ugly. It is isn't it.. I mean. Well it's not that bad. IF it will play GC I might buy it. I might buy it even if it won't. I want 2.

WhereIsTheBeef556

Peak late 90's/early 2000's tech design

[deleted]

Unless this runs 3DS games, it's kinda pointless no?

goldenmightyangels

This would be an instabuy for me if it can play 3DS games at full speed

hbi2k

It'll have the same chip as the RG556, so it will likely be decent at 3DS. Probably struggle with some games, but others should be playable.

atxrobotlover

I would buy these for people I didn't like, as a passive aggressive FU.

footfoe

It better run android. Looks like the perfect DS emulator. Also that taller screen would benefit some native android stuff.

MikeWaters0

I wish Anbernic would give up on the Unisoc SoCs. Something from Qualcomm or even MediaTek would be great.

SubjectLemon4719

Unisoc is a China made soc, it's not US nor Taiwan, that's why you are getting a discount on Anbernic handhelds. There is nothing wrong with unisoc, they just need to make faster soc than t802.

Puntley

They definitely could, but then you could expect to stop getting them for such cheap prices.

SubjectLemon4719

I don't like the "my little pony" aesthetic.

ZAPOMAGO

this better be 70 dollars TOP not paying more for that.

ban_imminent

No chance....with that chip set probably 120-150

YoungInoue

Man.... This thing is hideous.

fixingartifact

Really dislike the DPAD on the bottom, otherwise it would be an interesting device for non-16:9 systems, although I don't like the 720x720 screen like a lot of people do. One day they'll make a 1280x960 screen so we can 2x upscale 4:3 content and keep it's fidelity.

mcollier1982

Have they stated the screen size and resolution yet? I thought we only knew the chipset

beetlej3ws

brubain1144

Awful chip for this screen since it raises the cost. The rgb30 had it right. I just wish to have an rgb30 with anbernic or retroid build quality.

ToddRossDIY

This colour scheme would go great with my Hannah Montana PSP, but considering I've put maybe 10 hours into my 405v that I bought months ago, I doubt I'd actually get enough use out of it to be worth it

reddit_is_racist69

that's certainly something

Cuppa17

Looks as if leapfrog made it

Bowdin

This would have been immense with a NGP stick.

oOo-Yannick-oOo

WTF Anbernic, I only want a vertical T820. I wouldn't know what to do with this.

LulusPanties

I mean companies are just spamming different form factors with different screens and cpus like it was decided at random

LJNodder

Looks like one of those Leapfrog toys for toddlers

brandont04

It looks like a kids toy. Yeah, not good looking.

ProofScientist9657

Is that metal?

kick_heart

mistakes were made

Triumac

I hate the led rings around analog sticks more than anything on a handheld lol There's other actual problems here, but analog led rings is always an automatic no for me.

huniepopped

i kind of like how it looks. pretty colors

ChemicalGazelle1393

This reminds me of my kid's Leapster.

Liatin11

Honestly would prefer a dual screen device or something. This looks cool though

LifeIsOnTheWire

I would buy this in a heartbeat if it had the RG405M's 4:3 screen. There's no purpose at all for a 720x720 screen with this much performance. This device serves no purpose.

ThatCurryGuy

I love the circular dpad for schmups

Bayou_wulf

Will it have a touch screen?

MalcolmReady

Kinda feels like they’re taking their shot at an all-in-one, especially after their run of 3566 console specific shells

Virtureally

Will this run Cane 1000 arcade games? If so it could be a great fit for shmups

lendellprime

😒😂🤣

[deleted]

Oh wow, It seems to be just me, but this is THE device I've been waiting for. If this is real it may be the last retro handheld I buy in a very long time

MalcolmReady

I feel weirdly obsessed with it. I went to bed dreaming of the RG35XXSP but now I’m stuck in the Cube

Bgabes95

This doesn’t seem pocketable. I’m also not a fan of the Dpad, but to each their own. Big pass on my end tho

danimal24k

As someone who loves to play Shmups, this is the design I've been waiting for. I would have preferred a vertical 4:3 screen, but 1:1 is more versatile for horizontal-orientated games. Hopefully, Anbernic has some other colorways lined-up. But I'll take the My Little Pony colorway if not.

vitance153S

I dont understand why Anbernic put the stick on top on their handhelds that are more needed to have the dpad on top. They did the same mistake with the RG405.

Thatguydrew7

No concave sticks and that dpad is atrocious. PASS

Rodddd_

3DS gonna look cool on this one. Hopefully it can emulate 3DS properly

maratae

What's the crossover between games running at 1:1 and analog sticks? I'm actually asking. What is this designed for?

go_robot_go

A 1:1 display ratio is great for vertical shooters, where a left analog stick is also ideal.

Johndeauxman

Am I the only one that hates having dpad and buttons on different levels? It feels so awkward. I’m fine with Xbox with sticks offset but playing Mario with this just feels wrong and it doesn’t have the Xbox sticks feel to it either so it’s just weird and distracting to me. I’m in the camp of they get so close but more often than not they screw some simple thing up that if they actually played it could probably be prevented.

Ansayamina

Ok, that's adorable.

Top-Security-1258

I guess anbernic got Inspired by early 00's leapfrog devices lol. Stupid looking.

Laeyra

The color is the only thing i like about it, but I would still prefer it in all black if it was an option. Not that I'd get this, I'm not sure what use-case they're thinking of here, and it looks like it's designed to fit a child's hands.

FugginJunior

Look like cheap garbage.

LinearG

I sometimes see comments here from people who work on the manufacturing side of things so I'm hoping somebody can answer this: why not just sell a screen, shell, and controllers as one piece, and then offer a plugable SOC for people willing to pay different price points? So you could stock twice as many boards with a slower chip for people on a budge and stock fewer high end boards for anybody else. Hell they might even squeeze more money out of the budget people that way because at somepoint they may decide to upgrade.

Kornbreadl

I don't work in manufacturing, but I can give you a consumer perspective. One of them is going to suffer. You'll either have a "budget" handheld that has the build quality of an expensive one, so you won't be that budget anymore. Or you'll have a high end device with poorer build quality so that the budget one still stayed within price range. Maybe there's a sweetspot, but that seems like it'd be hard to hit.

Xelthos

Cute, but hate the joystick being on top for retro gaming if it's not primarily going to play ps2 and higher

pioj

Please show us how scaled games from Pico8 look like on it!

kick_heart

I don't understand who this is for lol

karishbhr

Looks like The Gizmondo.

JakeDoubleyoo

I love the aesthetic. Looks like some 00's design sensibilities are coming back. As someone who plays Pico-8 games, I'm in a very limited niche that would like the idea of a 1x1 screen. But the analogue sticks on top sour it just a little.

1stgradeotter

That must be a super early prototype that anbernic shows here. I guess it will not launch very soon. Seems like a pure strategic move to Show it early to kill competition of the ZPG A1 Unicorn. They bet that customer's will rathetr wait for an anbernic device.
