Yeah. NextDoor is going to blow up again with “Don’t build any new housing because it will hurt my home value” versus “My daughter can’t afford to live here after she graduated in sociology” versus “Stop building the high density condos that I don’t like to see on my drive to Sprouts. We need more of those cute Victorians that take up 1/4 of the block, but aFfOrDaBLe!”
Honestly most of the bitching I hear about tourists comes from this subreddit (which I'm guessing skews younger than the population).
Most people I'm around IRL think tourism is a good thing and welcome visitors (and their disposable income).
Yes there is a lot of bitching here but I would say the divide is 30/70 with bitching being the lower. Go onto Nextdoor or one of the FB groups like "I grew up in SLO" and it's like 90% bitching that the sky is falling.
But yes in real life, at least the people I'm around, SLO is great, tourists are fine, the changes are at least neutral.
"High scores**:** Gorgeous scenery, retro vibe, outdoor activities, wineries
"If you’re dreaming of old-school, relaxed California vibes, the super-pricey Bay Area and traffic-choked Southern California wouldn’t be it. But there’s a place figuratively and literally in between that’s a delightful throwback to the chill, 20^(th)-century Golden State. After all, they don’t call San Luis Obispo “SLO” for nothin’. Here, you can indulge in everything from wine trails to hiking trails without a crush of humanity. The stunning natural environment, with the Pacific nearby, is the cherry on top."
It does read a bit like “… and we don’t have those pesky darkies! Have you tried Carter’s Little Liver Pills? Once you’ve taken one, enjoy a Lucky Strike! They’re good for you!”
If they’re visiting from LA or SLO for wine and a slower pace, it may be safe to assume they can afford to buy, and will love it for a bit, and then complain about how it is missing things from LA and SF.

Yes, my dog swims there when the tide is right otherwise too stinky! I wouldn’t swim anywhere near there…I cringe when I drive over and see kids floating in the creek 🤢🤮
I know nobody wants to solve the homeless issue but if we could all just agree that certain things such as our waterways, nature reserves, and parks are complete NO GO zones for homelessness and enforced with DMZ level vengeance I think a lot could be approved.
It sounds like it’s time to go outside at night every once in a while and pop off a few rounds in the air, toward that wide open space.
(Kidding… mostly)
Here we go again.

Should’ve known, should’ve known, should’ve known again. Ahhhh, yeah here we go again. 🎶
“Don’t come. It’s terrible!” -SLO residents
Honestly the amount of whining by some (especially older) residents these days is mind boggling.

Is "retro vibes" code for white?? lol.

All homeowners in SLO just had a 10% equity bump today 😂
This.
😂😂
But the rent means you’ll never live here

Yeah sure, if you're willing to brave the roving bands of cannibals and that poopy poopy poopy creek.

Isn’t Avila one of the grossest polluted beaches in CA?
It’s just by the Creek outlet but we tell the tourists it’s the whole beach

What makes it so polluted?
I’m Not sure homeless living upstream & using creek as a latrine? Go figure.

This would make too much sense. 🤷♀️

No we’re not. That last tourist that cried about the bag check at Fremont bumped us number 11
Nothing wrong with visiting. Just don’t move here.
Retro vibe? Huh?
