Almost all of the northern states…. Idk if you need Reddit for this

Toebroohno

Northern as in touching Canada

El_Bistro

Tip touching

WallalaWonka

lol

ufl015

🤣

DangerousMusic14

PNW is not especially cold. It is, however, dark in the winter.

Grand_Opinion845

I came here to say the PNW. It is mild but goddamn the cloud coverage is depressing as fuck

DangerousMusic14

It’s not just cloud cover, shortest day of the year in Seattle is ~8h 25m of daylight. Easy to forget how far north it is.

Grand_Opinion845

This is also a huge factor. It is pitch black by 5pm.

ProdigiousNewt07

Yeah, I would have agreed with all the New England suggestions 10+ years ago, but not really anymore. Climate change has made our summers much more like the Mid-Atlantic/South. They start way earlier for one thing (there's hardly a spring anymore, it starts getting hot regularly in May) and they're often uncomfortably muggy now, with these really intense, sporadic thunderstorms that pop up randomly and dump a ton of water before disappearing in 15 minutes. Like if you look at the 10 day forecast for Boston, it's going to be all 80's with high humidity and a chance of rain almost every day. Only about 5-10 degrees cooler than Miami, for example. Which if that's your bag, cool, but I'm not a fan. Central A/C not being common certainly doesn't help.

Environmental_Tip738

I have two homes. Philly and Nashville. The weather is very similar these days

citykid2640

Twin Cities Seattle (not due to cold, but gray)

ibuycheeseonsale

Seattle summers are absolutely bucolic. Roses growing everywhere, 16-hour days, being surrounded by water— it’s perfect.

lighticeblackcoffee

All the amazon dorks going ham and shit?

ibuycheeseonsale

Haha yes, and when I was there, they stayed in their bubbles.

AcidEatersAnonymous

Yeah but like…grunge and good weed/shrooms.

ParryLimeade

I actually don’t find twin cities dreary in the winter. It’s super bright and exciting here in winter. I had more SAD symptoms in indiana in the winter

citykid2640

Was back for 10 days over Xmas….every day was low, gray, blanket clouds and night time at 4:45. It was like someone switched off the lights

ParryLimeade

This past Christmas? We had the driest winter on record I think. Not a usual winter for sure. Everything was brown. Kind of makes everything dreary when there is no snow

citykid2640

Agreed. I would have rather it been 20 and snowy than 45 and mucky/brown and dark. Of course Xmas prior was -30 windchill so there’s always that

ParryLimeade

I don’t mind that we have a few days of -30 windchill because it’s never that many. I grew up in the south so having snow and actual winters is preferable to 30-40 degree brown winters

Wicked55Chevy

Seattle summers are often very nice but the PNW is prone to getting some pretty major heatwaves that send temperatures 20-25 degrees above average. 2021 was the worst, but even this week we’re looking at multiple days of 95 degree high temps, when the average is like 75-76. Plus wildfire smoke can make air quality really bad in late August or September

Justthetip74

You realize that 95 isnt hot right?

Wicked55Chevy

It is for a region where the average summer high is in the mid-70s, especially when many commercial and residential buildings in that region still don’t have AC. Mid-90s isn’t exactly considered nice summer weather in most warm climates either.

No_Document1040

UP of Michigan! I spent a month of summer there as a kid, and it was the nicest month of weather I've ever experienced.

Rowenasdiadem

Protip: The best time to go to the UP is early August. The flies are gone, it's late enough in the summer that lake Superior is POTENTIALLY warm enough to jump into (look up Black rocks / lake Superior in Marquette!!), and most tourists are gone. Don't underestimate the Great lakes though... Lake Superior is basically a freshwater ocean.

sparklingsour

It’s pretty spectacular in the winter too, though… and I HATE the cold!

nappingintheclub

The harbor springs / petoskey / traverse area is just…. The best. Gonna be there in a few weeks and cannot wait.

obsoletevernacular9

Everywhere that's miserably cold rocks in the summer. Boston, Chicago, any great lakes cities, northern new England, eastern Canada, the twin cities, etc. this is a total thing. The places that are terrible in summer usually have warm winters - it's a trade off

djmanu22

So true, Las Vegas is great in spring and fall for example.

obsoletevernacular9

Yeah, my in laws live there, and my husband loved the weather in late February

[deleted]

definitely not true - parts of nevada and utah for instance, miserable in winter and summer, nice in spring and fall - so far this year Escalante UT's gone from –18F overnight in december to 97F in july, and will go to 100F in august

Rare-Force4539

Yeah but where can I go to be miserable all year long?

[deleted]

odessa TX 🤣

Royals-2015

Missouri. Gray all winter, hot and humid in summer.

AcidEatersAnonymous

Memphis

ZucchiniDependent797

From a good friend who lives there (he seems to enjoy it), it seems like Oklahoma is miserable most of the time lol

grottomaster

Seattle/PNW

obsoletevernacular9

I thought PNW had sunny, reasonably nice summers

obsoletevernacular9

I wasn't referring to random outlier microclimates, but even then, the same pattern holds from what I've seen - like my in laws live in Nevada in a Vegas burb. It's brutally hot in summer and warm / pleasant in winter, so do you get the reverse. They go to one of the nearby canyons to ski in winter because it's 30 degrees colder there, but in summer, it's also 30 degrees cooler and thus pleasant compared to Vegas. Same in southern Utah, at least the parks - Zion has warmer fall / winter weathe, but boiling summers, whereas Bryce tends to be 15 degrees cooler and thus gets more snow and is colder, but gets nicer summer days. The Northeast, northern great lakes, etc are very cold in winter, really nice in summer.

CarminSanDiego

Not Texas. Miserable in summer. And around 30 deg on average in winter. Yes it’s not -20 but it’s still cold and windshield ices over.

obsoletevernacular9

But he said brutal winters, not ones that hit 30 degree on average. That's not comparable to a winter in New England or Buffalo or Milwaukee

AcanthocephalaNo2946

South Central Alaska (Anchorage, Mat-Su Valley, etc). By solstice, almost 20 hours of daylight, endless things to do if you are outdoorsy. Great trails for camping, hiking, biking, snow machining, ATV whatever. Places to paddle and fish, rivers and lakes everywhere. Some folks here do prefer winter because the winter sports opportunities are great. They both rock. Shoulder seasons in fall or spring can kind of suck but that's a great time to dip out and travel somewhere if you can. Hard to want to leave and miss out on all the fun when the conditions are prime.

DeerFlyHater

Lived just north of Anchorage for four years. Agreed. It really is a great place to live.

Huge_JackedMann

I really liked living in Anchorage. It's like the biggest small town in America. It's got 500k so you've got some restaurants, theaters, events etc but its the only thing going for around 2000 miles so you're always running into the same people at stuff. Plus AK summer is so fun. You can be grilling and drinking in your back yard marveling at how nice the evening is and you look at your phone to see it's 11:30 pm!

tangerinefortuna

I’m going to Alaska end of September on a cruise and I’m scared, just anticipating that it will rain everyday and I won’t see much lol

Middle-Difficulty24

I did the Alaskan Cruise early June. It was amazing! I hope you have a balcony stateroom because the views are just breathtaking. I only experienced light rain when I got off the ship in Juneau and it stopped within 20 mins. We did whale watching and the weather was perfect. I also flew to Seattle for the cruise and the weather was overall amazing. I’m not familiar with the weather on the West coast so idk if it’s just the perfect time to visit in early June or if I just got really lucky!

AcanthocephalaNo2946

September can be really nice. Blue skies, golden leaves, lots of wildlife out and about

tangerinefortuna

Wooo that’s great to know!!

Consistent_Forever33

Similar to Chicago, many places in the Midwest have more fun in the summer to make up for the dreary winters. Minneapolis and Milwaukee for starters. Great weather, tons of events and things to do in the summer.

cmanson

Milwaukee is spectacular in the summer, such a fun town

Deinococcaceae

Twin Cities are awesome in the summer when you can actually use the like two dozen lakes and fantastic park system.

Recent-Start-7456

San Francisco, but “summer” is 1-4p every day

AcidEatersAnonymous

So you get to garden when it’s nice and cool and then hit the park in the afternoon for some sun?

Recent-Start-7456

Nope, you commute in the cold and sit in the AC in the afternoon. On weekends you forget your three jackets and the sun disappears in the park so you go home instead of pushing to the evening to meet up with friends. You don’t have a garden, you have a studio with a fake smokers balcony that you put two planters on that are doing a lot of work

AcidEatersAnonymous

This does not bring my soul joy

lituga

Most cities around Great Lakes and coastal New England

alnicx

Minneapolis

Woolly_Buggered

Missoula and Bozeman Montana. Both expensive, yes. But both are amazing in the Summer. Winters are an entirely different story. If you don't love outdoor Winter activities I would not suggest moving anywhere in Montana.

El_Bistro

Butte, Montana

yeehaacowboy

Montana and Wyoming in general

dented-trashcan

Bangor Maine. Not an amazing city and very small but it has everything you need. Summers are a lot of fun if you like lakes ponds mountains ocean hiking and bike trails. I live 15 minutes outside and my neighbor is a cornfield. You can really touch a lot in Maine within an hour drive. 2 hours to Canada 2 hours to Portland 4 hours to Boston it’s not bad up here. Yes winter sucks but you gotta be willing to go get out there and have fun.

datesmakeyoupoo

Bangor is so weird, not in a good way, though.

c0untc0mp3titive207

lol as a life long Maine resident… I agree

dented-trashcan

What makes it weird in your opinion? I’m not a big fan of the city itself. I love all the surrounding areas within an hour drive

datesmakeyoupoo

It just has a weird vibe. I have had to go up to Bangor for work related things. The food isn’t good, the city has sort of a depressing dying atmosphere, which seems to be somewhat common in former New England mill towns. It seems like there is a lack of opportunity despite the college presence, and even UMaine doesn’t feel very lively. It’s a beautiful area with nice hikes and the bog walk is amazing.  I’m also not from Maine or New England, so I guess my feeling of it is based on moving from a completely different area.

Ceorl_Lounge

Bangor's most famous resident agrees on the weird spooky vibe, Derry didn't just pop into his head from nowhere.

datesmakeyoupoo

I wouldn’t even say spooky. Just depressing.

dented-trashcan

Yeah I agree it’s definitely not a vacation destination. Depends what you want out of life. We’re up this way for work that should be wrapping up in a year or two. Who knows what’s next we don’t love it but we don’t hate it. I’d rather be down in southern Maine but there’s a zillion hidden gems in the area that make it worth it for the time being.

ZookeepergameOk8231

I get it, some others won’t .

dancelordzuko

It is indeed the former New England mill town vibe you're picking up on. Few have succeeded in fully shaking it off IMO. I've grown accustomed to it as a Mass native, but even Bangor's sticks out to me. It's similar to our Lowell in ways, but with way less people. I think it's because these towns used to be much busier than they are today, and that bothers us. You can see it in the infrastructure, the way the streets are laid out to be near the rivers and all the storefronts that are vacant. They never recovered despite some of the progress that's been made there in the last few decades. The bones for a nice city are there, but the people and money are not.

taylorscorpse

Maine has some of the cleanest ocean water I’ve ever seen

dented-trashcan

Yup most lakes are crystal clear. The air is the cleanest in the country and the highest percent of green areas in the country as well.

AcidEatersAnonymous

martianpictures

Buffalo is wonderful in the summer. Usually not super hot, lots of activities on Lake Erie, tons of people out and about.

dupontred

Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca

Nellies_Daddy

Syracuse and Rochester are solid

VitaminD3_

Chicago is a bit schizo. Not every winter is oppressive.  You could have a polar vortex thing where there is 6 weeks with a high of 0.   Or maybe another year there is barely any snow, but you get the 33 and raining bullshit. Although if you are comparing it to either coast, I guess it always sucks.

Logical_Rope6195

The grey though

Sensitive-Archer5149

Minneapolis and upwards up to Duluth.

djmanu22

Equivalent-Craft-262

Fairbanks Alaska takes the crown for this.

adrian123456879

Northeast is also miserable during summer

Kooky_Improvement_38

Portland. Summers here are glorious.

Maine

msabeln

My oldest daughter lives in western Michigan near the Lake. The summers there are a delight, and it is a resort area, but she says the winters are difficult.

carrythelantern

Sweet home Madison, Wisconsin. Stunning in the summertime and perfect for outdoor recreation like paddling and cycling. Brutal in the winter.

taoofdiamondmichael

Traverse City Michigan is a gem of a town replete with the winters vibe that was mentioned.

Far-Plastic-4171

Brutal winter Marquette Michigan. Cold and lake effect snow. Summers are very nice

mxsew

Alaska 🤘

daboywonder2002

The Twin cities are great in the summer. We have the state fair. Best park system. Taste of Minnesota. So many things to do. The only negative I would say is the isolation from other states.

Fit-Two21

LizzieLouME

People are saying Maine is "miserably cold" and that really depends on where in Maine. And I have found it much warmer recently. I do think the days are miserably short in the winter and honestly, that's tough.

Far_Information_9613

It really isn’t that cold on the coast. The days are short but that’s true in all of New England.

ZaphodG

I lived in Portsmouth NH for a decade. That’s across the bridges from Kittery ME. It certainly gets miserably cold even in southernmost coastal Maine. Coastal humidity makes it feel colder because you lose more body heat in humid air than dry air. I’m in the Massachusetts banana belt on the South Coast near the Rhode Island line. It rarely snows here and the warm ocean makes for a very temperate November. The flip side is the spring is cool until the ocean warms up in mid-June. It has the same coastal humidity thing where it feels cold. I ski so cold really isn’t an issue. If I’m cold, I dressed improperly.

Mammoth-Ad8348

Warm ocean in Mass? Is there an area that heats more than other areas nearby?

ZaphodG

Here’s the NOAA station for Woods Hole. It normally gets to 68F by June 15th and is in the 70s for three months. At Chatham on Cape Cod, the ocean temperature drops and anything north of that is colder water. Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay are pretty warm compared to Massachusetts Bay at Boston. I’m growing zone 7A. Nantucket is 7B. https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=bzbm3

Mammoth-Ad8348

Sounds pretty nice!

ZaphodG

Falmouth on Cape Cod all the way to Cape May at the southern tip of New Jersey has a similar coastal climate if you’re within a mile of salt water. I had a girlfriend for a bunch of years with a condo on Brigantine next to Atlantic City. She was usually swimmable a week before me.

Mammoth-Ad8348

We visited AC area last July and the water was definitely more decent for swimming than I expected! We are in central FL on the gulf coast and our water is 90 right now, completely different situation. 80s are definitely the sweet spot, it’s a little too bathy at the moment (still nice).

LizzieLouME

Yeah. I'm ok with cold but not a fan of ice. Also the temp is usually given North to South in Maine in the winters & it's usually a 20 degree difference. That's big. Also, we have had a bunch of storms where some people have lost power for a week -- so that can make the cold, cold depending on your heating sources & economic circumstances. Lots of variables. And we've been running +10 degrees daily this summer. Lots of us went from just a fan to multiple window A/Cs in the last year. Things are changing.

c0untc0mp3titive207

The average temp for Maine last year was 44° I wouldn’t call that comfortably warm personally lol. I also remember many days skiing this past winter that were in fact miserably cold.

Pinklady777

Maine

Far_Information_9613

I second Maine. The winters aren’t that bad on the coast though, and there is skiing.

Toriat5144

The winters in Chicago have been getting milder. We do have some really cold snaps that last a couple of weeks.

HungryCommittee3547

Minnesota is a prime example. Wonderful weather from May to October. Crap from Nov-April.

Real-Psychology-4261

Sometimes November and April are also nice but sometimes they’re still crap.

Mon_Calf

New England

Lioness_and_Dove

Nova Scotia

Savings_Spell6563

Then there’s NJ. We generally have pleasant, not-overly-hot summers WITHOUT having to go through the miserable winters. I’ve lived here my entire life (but spent a lot of time in many other places), and I truly do think NJ is the best of both worlds weather wise (at least by my standards). We get to experience 4 distinct seasons…fall foliage and a chilly breeze during Halloween, snow during winter, flowers and 70 during spring, swimming in the ocean in the summer… WITHOUT having to really experience the worst extremes that any of those phases have to offer. We barely ever drop below 15F or 20F in the winter, and our summers are summering without being unbearable (for example, the high temps next week are 85-88 range).

Tino6381

Southern NE is also like this. Lots of people answering New England to this questions but there’s a huge difference between winter in CT or even MA and winter in Maine.

EnthalpicallyFavored

Minneapolis, anywhere in Montana, Yukon

scalenesquare

Minneapolis is beyond miserable in the winter, but great in the summer.

charcuteriebroad

Western Montana

No one saying Colorado 🥶❤️

Bagofdicks1234

Probably because the winters are milder than people think. And it’s pretty hot in the summer although dry.

That’s the entire Great Lakes and North East. Brutal winters 6 mos winters but lovely from May to October.

Western New York, especially the Rochester and Buffalo areas. Plus the finger lakes are just a short drive away

Dodie85

Northern Vermont has gorgeous long days in the summer with highs in the 70s. Lush green everywhere.  Winter days are freezing, short, and gray.

Responsible-Life-585

North Western Montana

Responsible-Life-585

More than 6 months of could though. Lol.

BOKEH_BALLS

The past 3 winters have been pretty mild in Chicago lmao

MikeRNYC

Pretty much any northern city - Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Boston, NYC (not as cold as the others but still not warm in winter), etc. Chicago has the best summers, to me, but that's also due to the sheer amount of things to do and how seriously everyone takes it.

Northern Appalachia. Awful winters, but in the summers the highest the temperature will go is the 90’s in the sun in the middle of the day. It’s usually between 65-85, and the nights are in the 50s-70s.

Timely_Ad2614

Michigan is great!! I'm from Miami and my family has had a cottage now house on a small lake in Michigan. Went every summer when young and the weather is perfect!!! The people are great!! Have so many fond memories!!!
