Santa Barbara loses a legend - Blessed has Passed I think most people that live in Santa Barbara have seen the man known as Blessed, aka Weed Jesus, the Japanese man who dressed in white robes, preaching the Bible and smoking weed. Sadly, Blessed has passed on to the next chapter of his life. I first met Ikuma Ohtsu, Blessed, in the early ’90’s soon after I arrived in SB. The first time I saw him, I thought for some reason he needed help and maybe had a good story to tell. He was walking barefoot, wearing the classic white robe, holding a Bible. When I asked him if he needed any help, he replied that he could use a ride to Ralph’s. When we got there he reached into his robe and handed me a pile of fat sticky buds. That started a decades long friendship of smoking the herb, getting coffees, and listening to his stories. Blessed didn’t need help, in fact he helped many others in SB that truly needed help. On countless occasions I saw him giving money and weed to the less fortunate in our city. According to Blessed’s interpretation of the Bible, he was literally doing God’s work, often citing scriptures, Genesis 1:11-12 , “where God created every seed bearing herb, And God saw that it was good” and Isaiah 18:4 “For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” Over the years I got to know his story. Now, I have to admit, he would tell me the stories while we were sharing a joint or bowl, so it’s always a question of what really was his past. But a few things are certain: Born Ikuma Ohtsu in Japan, Blessed came to the USA to study art at the Chicago Art Institute. After graduating, he moved to New York to live in an artist’s loft where he met his daughter, Suki’s, mother. After Suki was born, Blessed made his way West to California, first living in Venice Beach area, then making his way to Santa Barbara. It was in Santa Barbara that Blessed would become a historic figure. The viral Weed Jesus. A few years after meeting Blessed, I miraculously met his daughter, Suki. She had come to town looking for Blessed who she hadn’t seen in 18 years. We randomly met at the Sunday drum circle on Cabrillo. She told me she was looking for her dad, a “unique looking Japanese guy who wore white robes” but had no idea where he was living. To her surprise, I knew exactly where he was because I had just given him a ride from the grocery store back to the hotel he was staying at! And that began a 30 year friendship with his daughter, me sending her pics of Blessed through the years whenever he and I would meetup, and showing Blessed pics of Suki’s family she would send to me. I will miss his manic laugh, his refusal to follow the norms of other people, and his generosity. I will miss randomly seeing him walking down the street and smoking a bowl with him, and him not giving a F about getting caught. So light up a bowl, smoke a joint, eat some edibles to honor one of the legends that many of us will miss.

Advanced_Dig4349

I was his neighbor for years when he lived on APS. He would stand on his back balcony naked and scream passages from the Bible. He was an odd neighbor. RIP.

matchamagpie

This is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing his story as well as your own!

theKtrain

Great write up. Nice way to honor a friend.

cypressdwd

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Blessed. I was only in SB for about 3 years but I remember seeing him for the first time and being a little weirded out. I appreciate the humanity you’ve so wonderfully added to my memory of him. He seems like he was a great person to have known. RIP, Blessed.

T3HJ4N170R

This is an amazing story. Thank you so much for sharing. As a Santa Barbara resident for over 25 years I have my own unique memories of Blessed throughout the years, but this was truly awesome to hear.

pineapplepredator

What an icon. Do you think this might have been the “Jesus” I always saw at Alice Keck park when I was a kid in the 90s?

feastu

Alice Keck Park Park

Psychological_Waiter

100% that was him

I was fortunate enough to [photograph](https://www.instagram.com/p/CtXHtmRvut2/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) him in 2022. I happened to have my camera on me when I saw him walking through the neighborhoods near Shoreline. I approached him, explained I was a photographer, and asked if I could take his photo. He smiled, chuckled a bit, and said "Okay, just one." He stood on the sidewalk in front of this house and faced me. As I was adjusting the shutter speed and aperture, I noticed he was making himself look presentable, fixing his beard and robes. I shoot medium format film and didn't have a light meter on me, so I basically guessed the exposure. I held the camera up, focused the lens on his face, and pressed the shutter. As soon as I put the camera back down he started walking away. I said thank you, and a couple seconds later out of curiosity, I asked him what his name was. Without looking back, he just put his hand up and waved. I remember I was anxious to get the film developed because I had no idea if I had exposed it right. When I got the film back and scanned it, it turned out to be my favorite photo of all time. I remember seeing him downtown as a kid 10+ years ago and being so curious about him. Meeting him by chance and being able to photograph him was nothing short of memorable and fulfilling.

q547

I wonder could the mods make a version of this the subreddit logo for a while (assuming you're ok with it)?

BrilliantDimension72

Sounds like this photo might be a good one to use for some kind of memorial in his honor?

No-Wheel-9053

Can you share the photo with us?

PENIS__FINGERS

amazing

lbidnis

Lighting one up for, Blessed! RIP

DavyCrockettWilliams

Hi, I was Blessed’s friend from when I met him in 1978 before Ikuma became Blessed, when he was a Japanese artist and I arranged for him to visit the Chumash camp near Point Concepcion where he took mushrooms, came back and gave me his artist’s brushes and went back to Japan where he was apparently some heir to lots of money and came back as Blessed. He showed up across from the White House one time in late 1990 when I was there and in Albuquerque in 1984 at our camp for the Rainbow Peace Walk. Please keep me posted about any memorial planned. This is the first time I have used Reddit, but I’m on Facebook as Facebook.com/David.Crockett.Williams

boohooligans

Wow what an awesome story. Thank you for sharing!

Wonderful_Form_5876

Being a youth in Santa Barbara I have some beautiful memories speaking with weed Jesus. I was seriously high when I got to interact but it was some of my first memories off the thc and that seriously holds a special place in my heart. May his influence live on in the daily life of Santa Barbarians and may we always appreciate life.

RadShad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIGlMJBJSWw RIP Legend

corndog819

Weed Jesus is the obvious star of this video, but I had a class at SBCC with the guy in the wheelchair who was absolutely convinced a lady in the class was his daughter. The thought of weed jesus and that guy in the same video always made me laugh.

blahdiddyblahblah

Was her name Kristi? If not, he has two imaginary daughters, lol

corndog819

It’s been a long long time but Kristi sounds correct lol

awholeassthrowaway

He also thought I was his daughter! That makes three!

DigComplex6505

The guy in the wheelchair once told me I reminded him of his daughter. Nice guy. Veteran. Not without his issues but we all do our best in life.

cbmccallon

Laurie?

GeorginaNada

He ranted at me for a whole block because he thought I was "corrupting" his daughter so... I guess go do crimes or something.

SeriousConcentrate44

What a trip, several years ago when my best friend and I would run into him downtown he (the guy in the wheelchair) would get really upset and scream at her about her being his daughter and try to follow us. We were 13/14 back then so it was a bit scary but I can’t help but wonder now how many other girls share the same experience 😂

Local-Paint3045

The guy in the wheel chair is a sex offender

[deleted]

And does not need the chair. He is a fraud

Thatspuggedup

He’s not. That’s a different guy

Local-Paint3045

No it’s him seen him on Megan’s law

Thatspuggedup

Again. Different guy but they’re both creeps

ipnicholson

Surprised this wasn’t at the top

cormacpara

I remember this one! Legend!

CRYPTOBLACKGUY

he was def more than this clip tho

BenchRevolutionary

This is amazing. The stars definitely aligned to give the person making that vid two State St. legends at the same place at the same time.

pypuja

Both the guys that made this video great have probably passed on...

IsThisReal805

The guy in the wheelchair is still around. He walks now.

Habradbury1

The wheel chair guy will outlive us all fueled on anger

[deleted]

Praise Weed Jesus, healing the lame

rose1380

I worked retail on State Street since I was a teenager. I definitely had some run ins (always pleasant) with him. Fun Fact when working at Nordstrom the man in the wheelchair was known for always wearing brand new socks and was suspected of steeling them - so when this video came out with both of these State Street famous guys it brought me SO much joy! 😂🥰

saltybruise

Wild, I know this is dumb but I never thought about weed jesus being mortal like the rest of us.

wookiewacker

Thank you so much for sharing your story of a man I always knew, admired, and wondered about from afar. I’m so glad he touched your life in such a beautiful way. As someone who was born and raised here, Blessed is a part of my story too - thanks for giving me more context and understanding of his story. I’ll smoke a joint tonight in his honor. And maybe I should start keeping bud on me for the less fortunate! Sending love to you, and to Blessed.

Vesperlovesyou

I knew him in the 90s too. I was a high school dropout teen runaway in '96, and he used to buy food for all us homeless kids. I remember he would roll up to The Square and ask us if we were hungry, then take us all around the corner for all-you-can-eat dinner at Fresh Choice (man I miss that place!). He would pay for everyone, up to 12 or more people at a time. He was incredibly generous and very sincere. A true legend who touched so many lives. He will certainly be missed, but never forgotten!

gettalonelcestino

This is when I met him as well. Such a kind human.

PBRpleez

I, too, had a similar experience as a street kid there in the early 2000s, except he got us pizza from Pizza by the Slice in paseo. Glad I caught the tail end of The Square hay day... Before all the benches were taken out and the wall was cut at an angle. Good times.

Confused-but-hopeful

Pizza by the slice...haha, Fresh Choice had already closed by then. He gave me cash to buy my own Bible at Barnes & Noble. I got a little pink Bible and offered him back the change, but he let me keep it. Every time he'd order the pizza, he would never sit down to eat, just insist it was all for us and he'd leave. I am so sad he's gone, but at least he did convert one lost teenage soul to Christianity. Well, he was my first experience toward the faith, but it was always one of my strongest pulls into my faith. Rest in peace and love Blessed. 🤍🩵🤍🩵🤍🩵🤍

805Lady66

Me too

RSecretSquirrel

I know that Blessed will have a Peaceful Journey.

MJStruven

He'll be back in a few days.

shusususu

This cracked me tf up 😂

twonapsaday

oh man, I’m sad to see this. he was absolutely a local legend.

BoDaBasilisk

Hope someone saves seeds from his heirlooms unless he was on that new ish? RIP

thescreamingstone

I have the plants. The Blessed strain will continue in the hands of the locs

BoDaBasilisk

Thank goodness!

q547

Happy to help grow if you need assistance, not much of a smoker myself but I do like gardening. Open to correction, but I *think* Blessed lived on the Mesa for the last few years, would be cool to keep that strain hyper local.

WholiganNacho

May that strain be forever blessed by the Blessed himself and may those who smoke it inhale peace into their lives 🙏 love from Miami Beach, FL.

proto-stack

So cool you could help him connect with his daughter. I've seen him so many times, thanks for telling his story.

MajesticOwl5101

This needs to be pinned

IsThisReal805

Yes!

star-gazed

I had the pleasure of getting to know him & his lovely family when they moved in next door to my parents while I was in high school 💚 Such a peaceful being

Star1079

So sad. Used to have a chat with him every now & then at the drum circle or downtown when my friends and I were hanging out at teens in the 90’s. RIP Blessed, you are a true Santa Barbara legend!

No-Wheel-9053

Much love and respect Blessed! May your journey be smooth and peaceful.  I knew Blessed for many, many years, over 20. He would always feed us hungry street kids,  holding church at the square.  Every time I saw him, he'd give me $ 20 bucks, and usually some weed. We talked about the Bible sometimes. When I came to him with a spiritual question,  he gave me great advice,  and some scripture to study.  Later that same day, he brought me a Bible. He went and bought it for me, telling me what to read, based on my earlier question. Such a lovely man. Does anyone know if there will be a service for him?     Thank you Blessed, I love you. You will always have a very special place in my heart. ❤️

Smart-March-7986

Gonna spark one up in his honor, never had a chat with him but always looked upon him as a true legend during my time in SB.

ScamperAndPlay

Legend. That crew was lucky to get to know him in passing. HotSpot, Roma, and that park near KidsWorld… Remember when weed was sorta almost hard to get? You had to know someone…

DamnGoodDownDog

Oh I miss Hot Spot.

No_Row6741

Thank you for sharing his story with us. I also remember him from walking around downtown in the 90s. I always love to gain more insight to people I've seen but do not know personally. More often than not, they have a very interesting and inspiring history. He truly seemed to walk his talk. OP, thank you for taking the time to share his passing with us, and a bit of his life's story. I would also like to thank you for sharing the two photographs. I value the visual representation of a person as a young adult adjacent to their more mature self, and connecting the continuity of their soul through both images. Blessed's true soul shines bright in both photos. My condolences to all who knew and loved him.

malandrin007

Thank you for sharing this, he was always someone you expected to see in and around SB, May he rest in peace 🙏

junana

Our son was 9 and played his fiddle on State St. For spare cash. Blessed always put 20$ in his fiddle case. Then our son would close up and head for the game store!

DaBooch425

No way, the quintessential Santa Barbara legend rest in peace

BackgroundDarkPurple

No way

Particular_Depth8059

What a beautiful story. Glad you got to know him on a personal level:)

DravenPrime

RIP Weed Jesus.

yaredw

RIP to a true legend. Gave him a hug once, didn't smell terrible.

ashsmash805

I would remember seeing him walking up and down State Street passing out weed and cinnamon raisin bread to the homeless. RIP to the legend ❤️

No_Passenger_2554

Godspeed Blessed. You have been an angelic blessing to countless people over the years here in SB. Most irie dude I ever met. You are truly one with the clouds. Rest in peace in paradise.

Bladedancer222

I moved to SB in 1999, Blessed will always be a staple of my child and young adulthood. Rest in peace you beautiful soul. 🫶

Ellasmith321

I am truly heartbroken that we have lost blessed.I have known him for close to 30 years. When I meet blessed he came into the square. Asked if we wanted to have a Bible study .we sat in a circle and he read the Bible to us .as well as passed the hearb around .when the Bible study was over he then took us out to eat .Yes I was a Street kid back then .Blessed was someone we all looked up to .He was truly our angel .You will be truly missed my dear friend my angel.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob) Would love to know when and if there is going to be a service for him or even will travel down to sb for it

ThePhantomDon

I work downtown and you’d be surprised (but not surprised) how regularly people ask about him and if he has been walking through. I realized a couple of weeks ago that I hadn’t seen him for a time now. RIP Blessed

KaladinVegapunk

Aw man! That's a bummer I used to see him all the time in the late 00s, really sweet guy, more benevolent than 90% of actual religious people. He really was just like this larger than life figure. A lot of towns have someone like that, like the millverine in Milwaukee but besides that guy with the lizard guitar who used to jam in the borders parking garage on State I can't think of anyone more iconic in SB haha

basscat27

Got the 420th upvote... going to spark up in his name. Amen 🔥

DigComplex6505

Does anyone know what he passed from? Or if there will be a memorial? I could so see all of Santa Barbara coming out to do a beach celebration of life and light one up in his honor.

No-Wheel-9053

I'm wondering the same thing! Any info is appreciated!

DigComplex6505

I mean I could put together something

thesnowboarder95

Oh man I just stumbled upon this, what a loss, I knew him from the early 90’s and would run into him until just recently. I was never a smoker but he was always just cool to hang and talk with. He was a righteous dude! Wow funny how he just came to mind recently. Santa Barbara really did lose a legend. Thank you for sharing this story!

GeorginaNada

When I think of the quintessential Santa Barbara local, I think Blessed. He represents a wonderful era for this town and I am sad to see it pass. I'm glad for the time we had with him and that he was so generous in sharing it.

IfIhavetosure

Thank you. May he live forever.

babyneeks13

Wow Thank you sharing the iconic story with the world! I remember seeing him everywhere downtown. What a good friend you are to have posted this! RIP “Weed Jesus” ❤️
