What did bank say when you called them to report this? You won’t figure out how it happened because of privacy laws.  Your information, like name, address, phone, email is all public record. Anyone can grab it to try to pretend to be you.

Have you tried, y'know, contacting the bank? We can't help with it, the bank can though, phone them and tell them there's been a fraudulent account opened in your name, you didn't say it up but it had your name and address etc.

SecureWriting8589

Exactly this. Why are you (OP) asking us on Reddit when the most obvious correct thing to do is to call the bank?

mycologyqueen

Because the bank won't give me any info bc in not the one who opened the acct which seems ridiculous. They will only close it. I thought I stated that in the post?

SecureWriting8589

But regardless, it is your solution, your **only** solution. If they gave you an answer that you don't like, you must keep pressing them, moving higher up in their chain of command. You will get no ultimate solutions here in Reddit, only from the bank. Make sure that you talk to their fraud department as well.

Hopefully you have your credit frozen now right?

SafeNotScammed

And ChexSystems, too! The identity theft subreddit has a stickied post which details all the agencies it's worth freezing reports with.

My daughter had this happen at BoA last year. Account opened in her name, but not her current address, an old address. The mail got forwarded to our house. We notified her, she call BoA, and they handled it from there. Six months later they sent a letter asking her to verify that this account was not opened by her. She filled it out and sent it back, and that was the end of it.

Contact your bank and prove your identity.

They think it is you, as it's your name on it.

By logging in there now there is proof you accessed it. Call bank imediatly and explain it, and ask that they close the account and investigate it. If you wait they might think you have something to do with it, since you really been in there.
