Yeah it's very likely its going to be a !fakepayment The whole "My \_\_\_ is going to pick u p, but doesn't have a bank account or cash" and "I'm sending via business protection so I need your email" is the same scam script we've seen posted before in this sub. Eventually it leads to them sending you a fake payment email. Report and block them.

bree272

That makes a lot of sense. I figured it was a scam but didn’t understand how it would work — the AutoMod fake payment explanation helped me understand the point of the scam. Thank you so much!

vitaminxzy

Nice, good on you to question it too! Stay safe and good luck on your sales! (sorry you have to deal with these scammers!)

bree272

Thank you so much! I’m glad there are people like you out there to help explain these things 😊

Hi /u/vitaminxzy, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Fake payment scam. The fake payment scam occurs when someone tries to trick you into thinking that you have received a legitimate payment when no such payment has been made. The most common method they use is sending you an email meant to look like a payment confirmation. In some cases the emails will be almost indistinguishable to a legitimate email sent by the payment service. Scammers are known to also show you screenshots instead of an email. Never trust a screenshot a stranger shows you, because it is probably doctored. Scammers [spoof](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing) the 'from' email to match an official address, and make you think you received a legitimate email. To combat a fake payment scam, verify online payments by logging in directly to the service. Do not check your junk folder, and do not assume a payment is legitimate based on an email alone. If a payment isn't reflected on your account and the person you are dealing with insists they have sent it, call support and ask about it. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/X9xn8uw.jpg) is an image of a scammer trying to pull off a fake payment scam. There is also a variant of the fake payment scam where you will receive a legitimate but fraudulent payment. A variant of the fake payment email is just an advance fee scam: the scammer tries to convince you that your funds are on hold, and that you have to upgrade your account by sending the scammer some money to authorize the payment. No payment processor works like this. If you think you're dealing with a scammer, you're probably right. Always trust your gut. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Just FYI, using goods and services is unrelated to you being a business or not. That is PayPal’s way of offering protection in the case of something being wrong with a purchase. There will be a fee on the seller’s side and it offers the buyer protection. I’m active in a subreddit that buys/sells fountain pens and all transactions are required to be goods and services. https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/whats-the-difference-between-friends-and-family-or-goods-and-services-payments-help277 However, this is most likely a scam. My guess is they will eventually tell you the funds are on hold and you have to upgrade your PayPal account yo receive the funds. That’s a common version of this.

Spongebob_Squareish

It says kindly. Every single time it says kindly regardless of what it’s about it’s always, always, always a scam UNLESS you live in India

No one else use the word “Kindly” in the email apart from the scammers.

IndividualRain187

Wait! What?! “My sister is helping me to pick up the item with me, but does not have any money?” What about the fact that “the texted” is planning to be right there to pick up the item as well? Hahahaha

Blakewerth

Venmo scam very common of posts here 👍🏻

BatterEarl

If they send money by Zelle it is yours, they can't take it back. It's good to be cautious but you lost a sale.

bree272

Based on the comment before yours about the fake payment scam, I’m nearly 100% certain that if I had given them my phone number for Zelle they would have sent me a fake payment confirmation text. So I very much disagree with you, I don’t think I lost a sale at all.

PaleAgent5371

Bingo.. there was never going to be any money coming your way from this person. Hope you sold your couch eventually 😄

BatterEarl

If you don't see the money in your bank account then they didn't send it. If you see it in your bank account they can't take it back.

fredSanford6

I accept zelle as a payment but this is a scam.

BatterEarl

OK, I agree it's a scam. But getting money by Zelle is not like getting money by digital check.

YourUsernameForever

Sorry I missed the part in which anyone said that.
