Exactly. A real person would have acknowledged that Oops you did tell me. Of course that still doesn't work since the sender already used OP's name.

Korrocks

A real person wouldn’t even stop to introduce themselves to a wrong number stranger once they realized it was a wrong number. Only scammers do that.

HtownTexans

you'd think that but I'm mad jealous of that guy who goes to that grandma's house every Thanksgiving because of a wrong number text.

Korrocks

Haha good point. I guess that’s the one in a million exception that proves the rule. Still though, that story is so famous because it’s *super* rare. Most folks who get a wrong number never communicate again and they *definitely* don’t invest money with them.

twysmilng

I got a wrong number text where the person said "reminder to meet here blah blah, by the way this is Sister so&so". I replied "you have the wrong number", and she replied back to apologize and seemed embarrassed. Then I asked her to pray for 4 of my family members who had been in a terrible car accident that week. She said that she would. I think the wrong number text was legit, and it made me feel better to ask her to pray for them.

UrbanFyre

I once received a “merry Christmas” text from a wrong number. There was some friendly texting back and forth after I told them I wasn’t who they were looking for (nothing weird or sexual; to this day never knew if it was a girl/guy) but literally for the next 5 years the person would randomly text me and ask how I was doing and would text me “happy _____” for every holiday.

MagyarCat

I got a genuinely wrong # text from my hometown area code. The dude was asking his friend when he was getting to the bar. We ended up chatting over a few days — the guy was around my age so we reminisced about a lot of the old bars that are closed now. He said we should get together next time I visit.

fribby

A couple of years ago I got a text from someone saying that they’d passed their driving test. I responded that he had the wrong number, but he kept texting back (I was too friendly with my response), hitting on me, asking for pics and asking to meet up. Thirsty teen lol. I ended up telling him I was a Grandma (I’m not) and he apologized and left me alone after that. This was before all of these crypto scams started texting people. I don’t respond to those.

LeGoupil7

’Cept me I suppose…

Bdoggy13

Makes it clear its either a copy paste script or some automated thing. I wasn't going to talk to them after anyways but that tipped me off it wasn't a legit wrong number lol.

guessesurjobforfood

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you shouldn’t respond to a wrong number by giving them your name. With all the text scams going on these days, the best response is no response. Just delete the message and move on.

Truecrimekeeper

CORRECTION: Block the number, then delete the message

!Wrongnumber

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the wrong number scam. An intentional wrong number text is the entry point to multiple different types of scams. Because these are so prevalent and lead to several unwelcome outcomes (including you confirming you have a live number, leading to more spam/scams), it is recommended that you do not reply to them, even out of courtesy. They hope to take your courtesy, parlay it into a conversation (often by commenting how nice you are and giving some suggestion of fate in meeting this way), and eventually deploy a scam. If you received a wrong number inquiry that seems to assume a connection with you (e.g. seeking a specific friend, inquiring about a doctor’s appointment, asking about a business correspondence, etc.) and there are no pictures included, then you are likely at the beginning of a crypto scam. Use ! crypto without the space to get more info on crypto scams. You can see a video of this scam develop from wrong number to crypto scam at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ_flb9tGuc If you receive a random text from a woman that is trying to play up a relationship/hook-up angle and includes an alluring photo, you have encountered what this subreddit often calls the Mandy scam, based on the name used in an early incarnation of it. The replies are sent by a bot and will give the same responses (with some slight variations) regardless of how you respond. The bot also has a few specialized responses that occur when you say words like 'bot' or 'scam'. After a series of replies, it will eventually push you to go to an adult/cam/age verification site. Here are some of the posts on r/scams about the Mandy scam: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/search?q=mandy&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all, you can see that the images, names, and scenarios vary. You can report spam texts by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM): https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages There is also some evidence that intentional wrong number texts can be part of a data-gathering exercise where each bit of info you give (e.g 'Hi Susan!' and you reply with your name out of courtesy) is collected to be used against you in other scams. Bdoggy13

Thanks, very bizarre scam for sure. This was what I was looking for exactly.

GForce1975

Don't engage. They'll flag you as a mark and you'll get tons of sms spam even if you don't fall for the initial scam

PoliticalDestruction

Yeah, did that a while ago and the texts exploded from there.

OctoAquaJell

same. I messed around with a few for fun then bam....got several.

TheyDidLizFilthy

i’ve had this exact same shit happen to me LOL.

ActionAWACS

These scammers aren't too bright, the one that scammed by grandma recently claimed to be from "Detroit the biggest city in New York"😂😂😂

Fuzzy_Inevitable9748

Actually a lot of scams are deliberately bad, poor spelling, grammar, etc this filters out anyone smart enough to see these errors so they are left with the more gullible people, those who might actually try to pay the IRS with iTunes gift cards…

ActionAWACS

Makes sense, these scammers manipulate vulnerable people for a living, definitely well skilled at this point.

kmnair

Yes. There was a paper I read a while back on this. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/WhyFromNigeria.pdf The initial message can be blasted en masse to a lot of people. Usually without any human intervention. once someone is engaged, it requires a person to spend time convincing them to fall for the scam which is more expensive logistically. So the initial message has to filter out anyone who wont get scammed eventually

HaoieZ

This is a standard setup for a pig butchering scam. This isn't the way anyone real who got a wrong number behaves.

kang4president

Pig butchering scam? I don’t think I’ve heard of that one. I’ve gotten a couple of these wrong number texts. I suspected it was a scam but I kinda felt bad for deleting and blocking the number without replying the first time until I got the exact same text message 5 minutes later.

thehumblebaboon

Please look it up and research it! They are very insidious scams that pray on good hearted people. To give a very limited explanation. They gain trust and give their marks what they want to hear, see, and expect. Including affection, attention and advice. However a farmer would do the same with a pig, giving it food shelter safety, and affection. The end goal is the same. The farmer raised this pig for the slaughter. The scammer has done the same. They will drain them financially and emotionally since they built so much rapport and trust. It’s bleeding a mark who doesn’t even realize they are being butchered.

kang4president

Wow that's a dark name but apt. Thanks for the heads up

thehumblebaboon

It’s dark because it’s scary, which it is. Especially for lonely people! Imagine talking your friend out of a toxic relationship ship. They likely won’t listen. This is the same thing, except their is no relationship. Just a criminal taking all they can get. Your friend doesn’t know that though it’s just their SO and your not supportive. Dark and scary for sure

kang4president

My mom's divorced neighbor fell for something similar. She "met" someone on line who somehow convinced her that he was insanely rich, owned diamond mines, etc. But he kept asking her for money and no matter what my mom told her about scams and to stop sending him money nothing could made her see the truth. I don't remember what made her stop but it went on for a bit. I imagine its not an uncommon scam especially against older people.

kierannatalia

my paternal grandma has been a victim of countless romance scams. she meets these men on weird dating sites, and they've drained her of the couple million her late husband left her. she fell for it over and over and over and over, with multiple different scammers, no matter what we tried to tell her. she's still being scammed, but has far less money to give away now.

kang4president

Thats so horrible!!

Truecrimekeeper

And I bet she never met any of these “men” face to face but they convinced her how much they lived her 🤦‍♀️

Hushling

This is a good read about the inner workings of the scam and a story about one of the victims. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/09/human-traffickings-newest-abuse-forcing-victims-into-cyberscamming/2/

!wrongnumber scam. Usually try to get you to invest in some fake crypto site

jacksonexl

Technically it’s the beginnings of a pig butchering scam. They start with a wrong number, then make friends, try and form a relationship and then get you into a crypto scam through a scam site.

Similar-Radio9514

Honestly when I get messages either texts or DM's on social media that are scammers. I flip the script and tell them that I am a poor single mom and ask them to send me money. That stops them from contacting me anymore.

jayroo210

I don’t want to hate on anyone trying to find info on a scam, but if you legit just scroll through the sub for five minutes you will find this same one posted multiple times.

ringwraith6

I guess I'm just a bitch. If I get a wrong number text, I just block and delete. I send all but the phone numbers I want to hear from straight to vm, I literally never answer my door unless I'm expecting you...and I have my email filters set to send anything except the addresses I want to hear from straight to the spam folder. I just don't have time for that crap.

bryant1436

I’m sorry, Brandon. What is your name?

Lykan_

Have you heard about crypto?

Bdoggy13

Yeah, why do you want me to invest my life savings into your cool new coin? Count me in.

moralprolapse

Well don’t you love me?

[deleted]

Not sure, but this is a clear example of social engineering. They make a false premise, literally contacting you without any information and soon after they're trying to peel away layers of your defenses so they can take advantage somehow.

Bdoggy13

It also appears to be somewhat automated based on the repeated response, hence why I knew it was a scam. Just a strange way to fish for potential victims.

px4855

Trying to scam you out of your name. She clearly asks if she can HAVE your name. If you give it to her may end up having to get a new one. Stay vigilant!

Bdoggy13

Damn. Looks like I'll need to shop for a new one now. Perhaps Michaelango.

Queenazraelabaddon

Clearly she is faefolk out to steal your name forever haven't you read enough lore to know giving out your true name is bad haha

ReceptionExternal619

I often enjoy wasting their time (but realize I am also wasting mine), trying to learn more about how they scam people. Each time, I create a bogus name and occupation. The scammers are so dumb, they don’t pick up on the fact that my real first name is on my WhatsApp account and never matches my fake name. The scam is so consistent that the same script is used when you question their integrity. Actual text - received multiple times. “I'm very sorry, if we, as friends, don't even have basic trust, I can't tell my heart. What can only be achieved by trusting and questioning, it requires tolerance and understanding of each other.” I also love how they send the same picture. Overly edited Asian girl in some professional setting, then the picture of “her” at work, then what she had for dinner, then her doing yoga. Once the yoga picture is sent - the financial whiz uncle is introduced. Then the wrong number person wants to teach me how to invest in crypto. Sadly / people fall for this on a regular basis, so many people losing 1 million USD or more!

Had this as a phone call the other day. 'oh, can I have your name to update our register' No, bye

Gaby5011

Hey this is the same person as a few days ago! Looks like they're still trying haha.

phatkahlilli

I got something weird like this recently too!! Someone asking me if we were still good for golf using a name that wasn’t mine then when I said it was all good after they profusely apologized they wanted to “get to know me” because I was “so nice” ???? Lol wut. I literally responded with “bye” and blocked them 😂

notmynameyours

Every time I’ve gotten one of these, they always send a couple nude pictures (obviously stolen from an onlyfans or something like that) then they say to chat with them more you need to sign up for some “dating” site, which will no doubt require a credit card or bank account for a “free” membership. Edit: plus these are almost always automated, pre-programmed responses instead of an actual person responding to you.

goatless

I got that vibe of pre-programmed responses, too. Normally, when someone is responding the UI shows 3 dots, but sometimes a whole paragraph just appears out of nowhere, as if it had been pasted in. And I tend to think that in casual settings, few produce such perfect and somewhat philosophical or informational phrases out of the blue. Edited for spelling.

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

I think it's called a pig butchering scam. You were likely to find out Diana is a beautiful, young Asian woman had you kept going.

goatless

Unfortunately for them, I prefer middle-aged, plus sized women, so it doesn't take.

todmon

The explanations here save me lots of time as I just don't respond to wrong texts/calls.

Wamgurl

Hey, Diana…get bent!

[deleted]

Nice to meet you, Brandon. May I have your name, Brandon?

stevenpdx66

“Hi, Brandon. May I have your name please?”

Dude, it's a scam. A pretty shit one at that. Who the hell sticks around to make friends with a random person?

flyingbiscuit76

Pretty general scam. Yes it is a scam.

swimninja

A really bad one, lol

cameron4200

Foot-in-door psychology. Oops I texted the wrong number, wanna be friends? Oh now that we’re friends, can I ask a favor of you?

IHateEditedBgMusic

They pretend to be a feeble old lady with Alzheimer's and trick you that way 🤣

RichiDH

Couple days ago had the same, \* hello barend\* my name is not like that at all, i said the person that its the wrong number( was a american number). I know these scams and talked to the person and after needed to add a swedish number. Talking a couple days and there it comes talk about to trade crypto with her XD, sending me pics from expensive cars she has and watches. If they say the word trade or something watch out also XD stay safe all.

Cod3Me

The entrance to all kinds of scam. Specifically wrongnumber. Someone already summoned automod

[deleted]

Just ask them if they want to learn how to invest in Bit Coin and black them.

khast

Ideally you don't respond at all, they now have a valid working number. You'd figure if you tell them off, or hint that you know what they are doing that would put you on some kind of avoid list. They love live numbers and spread in hopes that they will eventually scam you.

wwwhistler

Variation of the Amanda scam. Just a chance to get you involved

No_Appointment9435

probably the love of your life?

AcmInvestigationsLlc

It’s not a scam. It’s destiny. /s. No seriously, probably trying to make you invest in some crypto scam or something like that after sending you some pictures of « her » and build that soulmate relationship!

[deleted]

Its a Romance scam. They will build a personal relationship with you and move in for the con.

kittiekat002

This happened to me. I replied and the lady then tried to be my friend. I blocked her…

pepsizeroshuga

mN she still hasn't got her dress yet ???? she messaged me a week ago asking!

Kch1986

"Nope, I like the dress. Think I'll keep it." Then block the number.
