I know I'm referencing how in the movie >!they couldn't revive the protagonist after he died (or something like that) because satan cheated and made him get bitten twice!<, so it was made as a big deal in the movie.
I know Coco is objectively the better movie but The Book of Life is just a movie I hold special to my heart. It's one of those rare times where they somehow make the Love Triangle Work.
Coco gives me the feels though. I like both, and I feel like they are trying to do different things. Book of life is trying to be a fun kids movie that celebrates some aspects of Mexican culture, while Coco is trying to create an emotional moment while telling an engaging story. Both succeed IMO.
Also they were made by Reel FX Studios, the same studios where they made the movie where we go back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get Turkeys off the Menu
I did enjoy both movies but I liked book of life slightly more. Coco drags a bit in the middle and it tries too hard to convince me that Miguel is in the wrong at all when he clearly isn’t. Although my main issue with book of life is that marketing made out Maria was going to be the main character when it was Manolo (that’s not really a fault of the movie though). I also didn’t like them trying to make Maria ‘strong and independent’ when she goes unconscious and constantly needs to be rescued.
>it tries too hard to convince me that Miguel is in the wrong at all when he clearly isn’t.
Other than stealing the guitar, the movie doesn't try the make Miguel look bad at all.
My eternal pet peeve is when Aztec and Mayan elements are mixed. Gringos will never notice, but people like me who are very familiar with the Aztec do notice.
Coco went out of its way to depict a much more accurate Mexican culture and I will always respect that. Book of Life was made by Chicanos and it shows, mixing elements of Mexican, Aztec, Mayan, Spanish and Chicano. It's baroque and busy.
Coco is much better.
I love Coco but the book of life just has something. I still remember the first time I saw it just found it randomly on Netflix wasn't expecting it to be so damn good
Coco. Before i watched it, the book of life was ok. But the jokes were really testing the limits of either my endearment or being acceptable in general. The story was there to justify the movie. Then Coco came along, and after seeing a movie about a story with jokes in a (for lack of better words) “safer” and in the sidelines where they belong, the choice of my preference was made for me.
I find the fact that coco straight up did a rip off of this 2014 movie and then made it better than the original(most people’s perception of how ratatouille ripped off ratatouing) is really really funny
I mean, when BoL’s director and producer (Jorge R. Gutierrez and Guillermo del Toro respectively) actively supported Coco during its release, I’m gonna say people blow the whole thing out of the water.
How many Christmas movies have there been? How many Halloween movies? Lots of them right? How many Día de Muertos movies have there been? Exactly, barely any.
anyone who says coco rips of the book of life does not know what they are talking about I swear to god. aside from the fact they both are based on the same Mexican holiday does not make them the same story at all! both have a very different story ffs, just some aspects are similar
I love Book of Life. I saw it first between the two, but Coco was just way more powerful for me, and to this day, the only movie that could bring me to tears every time I rewatch it.
As much as I love the music and animation of Coco, I prefer BoL simply because I watched it far more than Coco. I could probably recite almost the entire thing when I was young.
Chakal is still one of my favorite villains of all time.
The Book of Life needs less "modern day fairytale" setup, and less modern colloquial terms. If it got rid of those, I think it would be a genuinely perfect movie.
Coco undoubtedly! One of my favorite, and dare I say one of the best, Pixar movies.
I also watched it first. I wonder how many of the people picking Book of Life watched that one first.
Book of Life is more my taste and I especially adore La Muerte and Xibalba.
And the designs for the dead characters is EASILY superior to Pixar.
Who the hell thought eyeballs with eyelids and eyelashes inside of sockets was a good idea?
Book of life, coco is a GREAT MOVIE, but when I saw book of life I was more glued than shcaff was to pikman 4 (hey I made a reference to the creator of the best mario kart tier list youtuber)
Hot take, but I hated the movie Coco because a lot of his family (but mainly his grandma) were so mean and it was really depressing, ruined the whole movie for me.
Book of Life and Coco comparisons give me major Kimba and Lion King vibes. Where people blow some superficial comparisons out of water while ignoring that both films are going for completely different tones and themes. If you prefer more fantastical elements and romanticism in your stories, then choose BoL. If you prefer more grounded or emotional stories, then choose Coco.
On which movie I think is better. Coco is a 10/10, BoL is a 5-6/10.
Well does coco have multiple El Tigre characters in the depiction of Mexico being the center of the universe? No? Then I think you know who the real winner is.
Coco is a good movie, and it's definitely great visually, but Jorge Gutierrez just has such a unique art style that I think elevates the book of life past Coco
I think my favorite part of Book of Life is the relationship between the main three characters. Manolo and Joaquin are rivals, but they're still great friends, and they both care for Maria outside of their romantic love for her. Maria loves both of them as friends, but still playfully pushes back against their flirting, and rightfully calls them out when they both go too far
Like, they could've easily made Joaquin an evil egotistical douche who puts down Manolo, but he respects Manolo and whole he is still egotistical, it's just all part of his hero act. And he is a real hero too. And Manolo isn't some perfect goody two shoes protagonist either, he makes mistakes, but learns from them to become a better man
The story of Book of Life is far more interesting to me and so much larger than life with its whole plot being set in motion by a game between 2 godlike figures. Also the Creep section goes so hard
So, I love both movies. Coco was great for the Disney feels and I ugly cry at the end every time.
Book of Life though, was art to me. It was creative and beautiful and had a rawness and hilarity to it that I couldn't deny. It was visually spectacular, the fairytale appropriately grim but fanciful, and if fostered many good lessons.
Plus it was plain funny without ever talking down to its audience.
Hidden gem of a movie.
I prefer Book of Life by a very slight margin. Mostly because I liked the Apology Song scene ever so slightly more than Coco getting that moment of clarity towards the end.
Book of Life, no contest. I love the use of a jukebox musical and the characters of Xibalba and La Muerte are so striking that I absolutely adore their designs. Legit wanted to do a couple cosplay with my wife as them but...I suck at crafting costumes lol.
Don't get me wrong, Coco was good too, but...the voice cast of Book of Life was legit ridiculously good.
Coco, I didn't have high expectations when I saw Book of Life. It's a little strange that two of the stars from Y Tú Mama Tambien, Diego Luna & Gael Bernal, starred in two separate children's movies about Día de Muertos.
And where the movie ends with a giant bell falling on somebody.
A giant bell falling on the villain, may I add
Sheesh, no spoilers
and where the villain is an honored man
How is the villain in book of life honored? He was feared by what I remember
Yeah I was kinda stretching it
How did you get to the realm of the dead? Coco: I found a magic guitar on The Day Of The Dead! Book Of Life: I fucking died
mind you, it was a >!double snake bite!<
Thats still death
I know I'm referencing how in the movie >!they couldn't revive the protagonist after he died (or something like that) because satan cheated and made him get bitten twice!<, so it was made as a big deal in the movie.
Damn, the book of life have some major actors Diego luna, zoe saladana, ron pearlman, channing tatum Fucking ice cube
Who did ron pearlman play?
Sebalba (i probably mispelled it)
I think it starts with a z
I checked it's xibalba
Should have expected that since they're Mexican
…to Xibalba?
Xibalba

Did anybody in Coco sing Creep by Radiohead?
Coco was humming it in her head the entire film
It was an instant win the second they put that song in
I have only seen the book of life. I liked it tho.
"Both?" "Both." "Both" "Both is good"
The Road to El Dorado: home of the easiest argument solver ever
2nd Place: “You mean if…” “If. If is good.”
I know Coco is objectively the better movie but The Book of Life is just a movie I hold special to my heart. It's one of those rare times where they somehow make the Love Triangle Work.
I remember being little and Book of Life scaring the absolute crap outa me! And rewatching it recently it was an absolutely fun movie!
I would say Book of Life is objectively better. After watching Book of Life everything in Coco just seemed like a rehash.
What? Did they really go back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu?
I remember nothing from the book of life but I still love it
Hot take. I think there should be a **Coco** sequel named "The Riveras" that explores the lore of the Day of the Dead.
Hell nah. I will be 6 feet under before I allow anyone to say coco is better.
Rip dude
The book of life is veey underrated to me, amazing film a big proble tho is that its veery rushed
Coco is more well-written but Book of Life is a lot more fun and is a lot more creative with its animation
The book of life
I am just realizing that *The Book of Life* was a *The Terminal* reunion for Luna and Saldana.
I did enjoy both movies but I liked book of life slightly more. Coco drags a bit in the middle and it tries too hard to convince me that Miguel is in the wrong at all when he clearly isn’t. Although my main issue with book of life is that marketing made out Maria was going to be the main character when it was Manolo (that’s not really a fault of the movie though). >it tries too hard to convince me that Miguel is in the wrong at all when he clearly isn’t. Other than stealing the guitar, the movie doesn't try the make Miguel look bad at all.
Also containing a goofy animal companion
Book of life was the first I saw out of the two so it’s my preferred
My eternal pet peeve is when Aztec and Mayan elements are mixed. Gringos will never notice, but people like me who are very familiar with the Aztec do notice. How many Halloween movies? Lots of them right? How many Día de Muertos movies have there been? Exactly, barely any.
Fair enough
And many Christmas movies have basically the same stories too
anyone who says coco rips of the book of life does not know what they are talking about I swear to god. aside from the fact they both are based on the same Mexican holiday does not make them the same story at all! both have a very different story ffs, just some aspects are similar
No, the stories are pretty simialr. I still think coco is better tho
I love Book of Life. I saw it first between the two, but Coco was just way more powerful for me, and to this day, the only movie that could bring me to tears every time I rewatch it.
For the longest time I thought these two movies were the same movie, that’s how similar they are
Did Miguel sing Creep by Radiohead? Nah. Didn't think so. Anywho, I love them both in their own ways.
I don't have favorites among my "day of the dead with forbidden music and colorful, dead relatives" movies.
AS a mexican book of life is objectively better AND disney tried to copyright día de after they made coco
Both? Both. Both! Both is good.
I enjoy the Book of Life but Coco never fails to make me cry every time I watch it
I love them both. They're very different past the initial connections to day of the dead.
Easily book of life. It's just coco but actually funny and with memorable side characters.
As much as I love the music and animation of Coco, I prefer BoL simply because I watched it far more than Coco. I could probably recite almost the entire thing when I was young. Chakal is still one of my favorite villains of all time.
I had this exact thought yesterday, get out of my fucking head
Book of Life has better animation, Coco has a better story and a far better soundtrack
Book of Life
Did Coco have a sweet love song as “I Love You Too Much?” Also it had [Ice Cube](https://youtu.be/neKntpilFes?si=Ocjfz7ZsUophAnDl)
Coco is better but the Book of Life is still special to me
I respect Book of Life's ambition, but Coco was simply a better movie.
I remember seeing the ads for Book of Life on YouTube CONSTANTY lol. Still need to watch it.
Army of Darkness
The Book of Life needs less "modern day fairytale" setup, and less modern colloquial terms. If it got rid of those, I think it would be a genuinely perfect movie.
I really like both but book of life was a bit more funny
I would pick Coco but Coco doesn’t have a cover of Creep by Radiohead in its movie
Coco is more emotional, but Book of Life is one of my favorite movies ever soooo
I’d say there pretty much equal tbh
Coco undoubtedly! One of my favorite, and dare I say one of the best, Pixar movies. I also watched it first. I wonder how many of the people picking Book of Life watched that one first.
Both of them
🎵Toro, I'm sorry, for tonight I understand...🎵
My sister was completely hooked on The Book Of Life when she was like 6. I think she also had an it if a crush on Manolo
Both because they both great movies from my childhood
I honestly like both, but I prefer book of life
Book of Life 100%. My favorite movie ever.
Book of life is better than coco sorry if anyone disagrees
Coco has better songs, Book of Life outclasses otherwise. The only major flaw Book of Life has is Candlemaker
I watched both
Book of Life is more my taste and I especially adore La Muerte and Xibalba. And the designs for the dead characters is EASILY superior to Pixar. Who the hell thought eyeballs with eyelids and eyelashes inside of sockets was a good idea?
Coco is a great movie, but the Book Of Life will always be so special to me
I love Coco more, but I also love The Book of Life, so I love both.
Book of life, coco is a GREAT MOVIE, but when I saw book of life I was more glued than shcaff was to pikman 4 (hey I made a reference to the creator of the best mario kart tier list youtuber)
book of life will always be my favorite day of the dead movie
The Book of Life has Diego Luna.
book of life
Coco is one of the best Pixar films, so Coco
I’ve never seen the book of life but I didn’t know it was like Coco
Hot take, but I hated the movie Coco because a lot of his family (but mainly his grandma) were so mean and it was really depressing, ruined the whole movie for me.
The Book of Life.
Book of Life and Coco comparisons give me major Kimba and Lion King vibes. Book of life easily for me
Coco is a good movie, and it's definitely great visually, but Jorge Gutierrez just has such a unique art style that I think elevates the book of life past Coco I think my favorite part of Book of Life is the relationship between the main three characters. Manolo and Joaquin are rivals, but they're still great friends, and they both care for Maria outside of their romantic love for her. And he is a real hero too. And Manolo isn't some perfect goody two shoes protagonist either, he makes mistakes, but learns from them to become a better man
Coco is a rip off of the Book of Life and I stand by that.
Coco. Book of Life was fine, but damn did I hate the jukebox musical element and framing device.
Coco had arguably better music. BoL still wins for me.
I looooove you too much…
Manolo is the reason my standards are high in men and that movie has such a special place in my heart I LOVE IT (but the songs in Coco are beautiful)
Well, I haven't watched Book Of Life, so Coco it is!
The story of Book of Life is far more interesting to me and so much larger than life with its whole plot being set in motion by a game between 2 godlike figures. Also the Creep section goes so hard

Book of life
I probably need to rewatch Book of Life, but honestly I’m tired of all the discourse surrounding these two movies because they are both great
Book of Life came out first, had a more unique animation style, and was funnier, so I'll go with that one.
I just had a brain blast to 4th grade and the book of life lmao
Definitely Coco, although I do really like The Book of Life
Book of life goes so hard
I was OBSESSED with Book of Life when I was little, so definitely that movie. Coco is a lovely movie though!
The one with Creep in it
Book of Life
I need to find some way to watch book of life again
You can already see wich one them got the stronger visual identity like those Colord POP Pixar just got that Dog in em
I watched the book of life and lot and I still haven’t see coco so uhhh
El Libro de la Vida.
I prefer Book of Life by a very slight margin. Mostly because I liked the Apology Song scene ever so slightly more than Coco getting that moment of clarity towards the end.
coco 4 sure
Book of Life, no contest. I love the use of a jukebox musical and the characters of Xibalba and La Muerte are so striking that I absolutely adore their designs. Don't get me wrong, Coco was good too, but...the voice cast of Book of Life was legit ridiculously good.
I love when in The Book Of Life the Book Of Life says "it's livin' time" and then he starts booking all over the place
Coco is the better movie but I absolutely adore the animation/ art style of book of life more
Book of life is more unique visually plus the love interest is hot
It’s been a while since I’ve seen Book of Life but as far as visual BoL definitely
Definitely The Book of Life
Coco because i have never seen Book of Life
Both are amazing.
Coco, I didn't have high expectations when I saw Book of Life. It's a little strange that two of the stars from Y Tú Mama Tambien, Diego Luna & Gael Bernal, starred in two separate children's movies about Día de Muertos.
Honestly both bad
Coco easy. The Book of Life feels a lot more generic and is really poorly paced
Coco is great and all but what is Disney trying to say about Mexicans needing to cross a border in the afterlife?
