My second ever gig and they were bloody incredible. RIP Stuart Adamson. They played a few years ago in Southend, but I couldn't bring myself to see them - it didn't seem right with Stuart there.
My wife’s favorite band is The Twilight Sad, but she also has a “make tiny changes to earth” FR tattoo. So sad about Scott, but it’s cool that Grant is drumming for the Sad now.
I was very fortunate to see Mastersystem at the GSA not long before Scott was lost to us. A great gig and such a great distillation of 90s grunge vibes. Loud and crunchy.
Mastersystem and Owl John albums are every bit as good as FR projects.
They were a band who never shied away from changing their sound up. Every FR album was like embarking on a novel trip and Scott’s voice was the constant guiding you through.
Would say I like B&S adjacent music, but for some reason they’ve always annoyed me. Think I grew up with a disdain for west end wanks with posh accents and just lumped them in with that. Oh well.
They definitely tip over into annoying twee bollocks way too often, but they do have [some good tunes](https://youtu.be/9I42Q-EU50s?list=RDEMjkQVRzKTJgxSGfOF8tnEKQ). I mean, come on, you've got to appreciate how good a lyric this is "Lazy Jane, all the time, painting lines, you are sleeping at bus stops, wondering how you got your name, and what you're going to do about it"
Runrig
Noone sings such beautiful and angry songs about Highland and Island life, and their efforts towards preservation omabd promotion of Gàidhlig language and culture is immeasurable.
Plus, "One in a Lifetime" remains for me the gold standard of live albums
Phew where tae start 🤔
Big country, simple minds, Biffy Clyro, Texas, Travis there's too many to list 🤣
My personal favourites are Big Country and Simple Minds.
When I was a kid back in the 70's it was Bay City Rollers, never seen so many kids wearing tartan trying to copy their style.
Frightened Rabbit,
Idlewild,
There Will Be Fireworks,
Wrest,
Fatherson,
Admiral Fallow,
Vistas,
Xcerts,
Arab Strap,
King Creosote,
The Delgados,
Twin Atlantic,
The Twilight Sad,
And that's just the start.
It's wither Silly Wozard or the Corries, for keeping Scottish traditional music alive and doing it superbly.
On the rock side, Biffy Clyro with an honourable mention to the Fratellis.
The pirate metal band Alestorm is objectively the best and most Scottish band of all time. Here is a list of evidence:
1. They have a song called Fannybaws. It is an absolute banger.
No further evidence is required
Runrig. How has no one said Runrig? A band that melded Celtic and rock, Gaelic and English and was not only legendary here but also in many northern European countries
The Average White Band. The fact that black musicians in America were surprised to hear that they were white, and then even more surprised to hear that they were from Scotland. I don't know if there is an even higher compliment than that. Black musicians in America thought that they were black funk musicians. Still to this day, most people out side of Scotland don't know that they are Scottish.
Honourable mentions go to The Thanes, and The Kaisers. Not many folk in Scotland know them but they seem to be known outside of Scotland.
Not strictly a band but King Creosote is my favourite at the moment.
But Belle and Sebastian forever!!
(The blues are still blue)
However!!
Primal Scream
Jesus and Mary Chain
Makes it difficult for a favourite
Too much good stuff.

David Byrne's family apparently emigrated because his parents had a mixed marriage and they were subject to a lot of sectarianism.
If that's not the most uniquely Scottish reason to leave the country I don't know what is. As a result DB and everything he touches is as Scottish as haggis, neeps and tatties.
Silly wizard are phenomenal. I'm always amazed at how many songs that sound as if they're old traditional tunes were actually written by Andy M Stewart.
It's a bit distressing to me how little representation folk has had in this thread. Surely the greatest Scottish band of all time should be one that plays Scottish music?
The Proclaimers!
I would walk 500 miles to defend this answer and then I would walk 500 more just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to defend this answer.
Can't see Vistas mentioned but a fair few songs across all albums have been played daily across years now. Worth a listen through their popular hits if you've no heard of them.
"A wee bit jazz" - For those as deep in the hole as me 😂
Bleed From Within
The LaFontaines and Biffy Clyro would also be options but I prefer metal personally. Biffy Clyro wins it for both mass appeal/popularity as well as good music.
Always makes me happy to see the Blue Nile on these lists. Sometimes feel they’re under appreciated. We’re currently working on a remix of Downtown Lights because it’s such an incredible song
It's Nazareth but, I'd like to take this time to mention my personal fave, Holocaust. Average White Band are great too! Oh! And Pilot for writing Magic. Such a good song.
Is it cheating to say David Byrne as a solo artist? He was born in Dumbarton to Scottish parents although they moved to Canada when he was quite young.
Woh there. Give us a chance. You can't get much better than The Blue Nile. Maybe Simple Minds for album sales. Ooh let me go and have a trawl through my vinyl. 🥳
No mentions of The Proclaimers or Runrig are depressing.
I'm a metal guy who doesn't even like them but they've done some of the most iconic tunes from this place and it's DISRESPECTFUL!!
lol
Love Fist
Girls are going crazy - spreading love fist goo all around....
*heavy scouse accent* 'I'll see Lovefist Burn, Lovefist Ruined me life'
> your time polluting the air waves is over. I gave you chance to be friends, well now I'm giving you the chance to die.
TOMMY! TOMMY! THAT PSYCHOS BACK!
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
The Vaselines
Boards of Canada
I’d accepted they were Canadian and never looked any further 😂
The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Mental that I had to scroll this far to see BoC. It's not even close.
Nobody said Mogwai yet 😭
100% Mogwai for me. Honourable mentions to Arab Strap and The Twilight Sad though!
Absolute fucking titans, been on my bucket list to see love for a long time
For a while in the noughties, Franz Ferdinand were picking up awards right, left and centre.
The first Franz Ferdinand album is so good. So many catchy riffs.
Another great gig I saw in Princes Street gardens. Take Me Out must be one of the ultimate crowd bouncing tunes
Jesus and Mary Chain
East Kilbride shout...
Gerry Rafferty is a favorite of mine
Cocteau Twins
Idlewild
Came here for this.
Simple Minds for me
Simple minds are tremendous. Favourite track?
Alive and Kicking
I worked with Jim Kerr a few times. He told me a story about an American fan who’s favourite song of theirs was “I like fried chicken”
I Travel
Love Song
Big Sleep. Derek Forbes is an outstanding bass guitarist
Colours fly
American
***Big Country***. If only because they occasionally used effects pedals to make their guitars sound like bagpipes.
Always synonamous with Restless Natives. A film I always have an affection for from my childhood.
Was that the one with the kids in clown masks robbing tourist coaches in the Highlands?
That's the one. The Clown and the Wolfman.
This will always be my answer. They were the first proper gig i went to and it was amazing.
My second ever gig and they were bloody incredible. RIP Stuart Adamson. They played a few years ago in Southend, but I couldn't bring myself to see them - it didn't seem right with Stuart there.
Definitely Frightened Rabbit
the drummer from FR now runs a cider shop in Anstruther called aeble and their homemade house cider is unreal good!
He's also now drumming for The Twilight Sad and went on tour with The Cure. Seems to be doing well. There is light, there's a tunnel to crawl through.
My wife’s favorite band is The Twilight Sad, but she also has a “make tiny changes to earth” FR tattoo. So sad about Scott, but it’s cool that Grant is drumming for the Sad now.

RIP Scott Hutchinson, love Mastersystem
I was very fortunate to see Mastersystem at the GSA not long before Scott was lost to us. A great gig and such a great distillation of 90s grunge vibes. Loud and crunchy. Mastersystem and Owl John albums are every bit as good as FR projects. They were a band who never shied away from changing their sound up. Every FR album was like embarking on a novel trip and Scott’s voice was the constant guiding you through.
A cripple walks amongst you tired human beings
It took way too much scrolling to find this answer. The only right one.
And it's not even close
Always this. 💙
Camera Obscura for me
How has no-one said the Beta Band?
One of my husbands favourite bands, we had dry the rain as one of our wedding songs
Had to scroll down past utter pish to find this.
Primal Scream
I knew I would find you eventually
Annie Lennox / The Eurythmics
Only Annie was Scottish from the Eurythmics
My personal favourite is Chvrches.
Bit miffed no-one else said Chvrches
The Blue Nile
John Martyn.
Solid Air start to finish is an outstanding record.
Belle and Sebastian for the win.
I mean, come on, you've got to appreciate how good a lyric this is "Lazy Jane, all the time, painting lines, you are sleeping at bus stops, wondering how you got your name, and what you're going to do about it"
Since plenty excellent bands have been mentioned and no one has said them yet I’ll say: Franz Ferdinand
I had completely forgotten they're Scottish!
Garbage!
Shirley's Scottish. Don't think the rest are. Great band though.
Never heard the band (I'll put that right soon) but Shirley Manson was brilliant in The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Goodbye Mr McKenzie
Rattling Boy is up there with Teenage Kicks as best single ever.
Teenage Fanclub are pretty good!
This is the answer
The Waterboys
Runrig
Deacon Blue
I don't know why this is so far down. Ricky Ross is sound as fuck too.
The Associates
Shocked nobody has said The Proclaimer’s?! The Corries are also up there 🙌🏻
Realistically it's The Proclaimers. Come on, people.
They said greatest not most popular at weddings.
The Proclaimers have some truly beautiful songs though. And Joyful Kilmarnock Blues is one of the greatest songs to put a smile on your face.
Travis
I want to seeeeeee
What people saw
I want to feel
Like it felt before
Just seen them at the hydro the other day they were banging
Yes, the Cocteau Twins !!
Texas or Biffy clyro
First couple of Texas albums are good. After that, dirge.
Same can be said about Biffy
Average white band -pick up the pieces specifically
Nazareth
Del Amitri.
Josef K.
Arab Strap!
The Proclaimers
The Associates Primal Scream Simple Minds Belle & Sebastian The Jesus & The Mary Chain
Idlewild and B&S
I've recently got into The Delgados, and I think they're my favourite now, just in front of Arab Strap.
Oi Polloi!!
Gun or Texas. My dad would say Nazareth.
Runrig Noone sings such beautiful and angry songs about Highland and Island life, and their efforts towards preservation omabd promotion of Gàidhlig language and culture is immeasurable. Plus, "One in a Lifetime" remains for me the gold standard of live albums
No mention yet for Orange Juice or Aztec Camera?! The Sound of Young Scotland.
This post has been up 27 minutes and nobody has mentioned Belle and Sebastian? What is this world coming to? 😩
Sleep The Clock Around is one of the best songs ever written. And there's bagpipes!!
Jimmy Shand and his band. They performed for decades all over the world.
Phew where tae start 🤔 Big country, simple minds, Biffy Clyro, Texas, Travis there's too many to list 🤣 My personal favourites are Big Country and Simple Minds. When I was a kid back in the 70's it was Bay City Rollers, never seen so many kids wearing tartan trying to copy their style.
Frightened Rabbit, Idlewild, There Will Be Fireworks, Wrest, Fatherson, Admiral Fallow, Vistas, Xcerts, Arab Strap, King Creosote, The Delgados, Twin Atlantic, The Twilight Sad, And that's just the start.
So many great Bands: Pilot, Love & Money, Hipsway, Danny Wilson, Deacon Blue
Didn't expect to see Danny Wilson in this thread - upvoted.
It’s Mogwai for me
The corries/Big country
Young Fathers
Silly Wizard.
Cocteau Twins must be near the top.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band!
Paolo Nutini. Paolo only. All day.
It's wither Silly Wozard or the Corries, for keeping Scottish traditional music alive and doing it superbly. On the rock side, Biffy Clyro with an honourable mention to the Fratellis.
For me. Fairground Attraction. Eddy Readers voice is amazing. Seen her solo about 5 times years
bay city rollers
The pirate metal band Alestorm is objectively the best and most Scottish band of all time. Here is a list of evidence: 1. They have a song called Fannybaws. It is an absolute banger. No further evidence is required
> They have a song called Fannybaws. It is an absolute banger. And he is a fearsome pirate.
He's the scourge of the seas.
Shooglenifty
The corries
Hue and Cry
Goodbye Mr Mackenzie
Runrig. How has no one said Runrig? A band that melded Celtic and rock, Gaelic and English and was not only legendary here but also in many northern European countries
Runrig to a lot of people is just gimmicky Loch Lomond but their back catalogue is so varied and excellent
Add N to X
The Average White Band. The fact that black musicians in America were surprised to hear that they were white, and then even more surprised to hear that they were from Scotland. I don’t know about “of all time” but I’m a big fan of Runrig. Skipinnish too, I’m seeing them in September:)
