I don't see why not. Fish just freezer burns faster than other stuff from my experience, even if vacuum wrapped; but that's about it. The only thing that gives off a bad smell after being frozen for a long time is fatty fish like salmon, because the fat spoils the fastest.

WalterMelons

What about walleye?

reel2reelfeels

walleye freezes well just put some plastic in between the fillets if you stack them so they dont freeze into a block. vacuum sealed is best.

dildocrematorium

My dad freezes his in water.

Moonshiner2023

I grew up freezing my walleye in water bags

techtimee

No idea, never cooked or stored it.

AaronBurrIsInnocent

Fat spoils in the freezer?

BlackZapReply

Probably, but it's still tilapia.

PickledMustardSeeds

This is the answer

zergrush1

In some of the rural areas in CA the only fish they sell at markets is Tipalia from China.

Colforbin_43

Then don’t get fish

Key_Apple_5745

If you knew what China is feeding them you probably wouldn’t eat it.

Electronic-Mine1724

My professor in college who studied the self stable dairy industry in college told us absolutely NEVER buy any farm raised fish or shell fish from China. She said the conditions are deplorable.

jhonkas

guess what, a lot of the frozen from canada are actually imported from... guess

That-Sandy-Arab

Food chain management is crazy when you go down the rabbit hole tbh that makes sense and still shocks me

jhonkas

yeah granted its not going to kill you if you eat it once or twice since that would be bad for business, but the frozen seafood is bad. also any canned food from canada has a high chance its repackged from asia to try to get around anti dummping fees

[deleted]

That’s the truth. Look it up. I don’t it

Weird_Cantaloupe2757

I’m gonna guess they feed them old tires and batteries

YouArentReallyThere

They have chicken coops built over the fish pounds. ‘Nuff said

stefanica

It's actually a really cool concept, but I don't really trust that it's done safely over there.

YouArentReallyThere

In what geographical location would that have to take place wherein you would feel safer eating fish that have been fed a steady diet of fecal matter their entire life? Holy shit. Don’t eat tilapia. It’s a garbage fish.

fun-bucket

CONSUMABLE FISH FROM CHINA IS RISKY, SPIN THE WHEEL, GOOD LUCK!

South-Presentation92

That's what I was thinking, too. Lol

Jumpy-Drummer-7771

Yo! It wasn't safe to eat when it was swimming.

athena2112

Yeah I’ve been done with tilapia for a few years now, they are the poop eating fish I found out! They keep them at zoos in the water with the hippos and they eat the hippo poop 🤮

ejfellner

Tilapia is a great, cheap meal.

shreddedtoasties

What’s wrong with tilapia We use to stock In our lakes for eating

newgalactic

The tilapia you stock in your lake is likely fine. But commercial tilapia is often used to purify sewage in water treatment plants, and then sold. ... tilapia purify sewage by eating the poop.

cabo169

Well… we know the ones that eat ass in here…

onedemtwodem

I've always heard it was trash fish. I don't eat it.

LetoPancakes

any proof of this?

Master_Physics1620

I think I have started a fish war 😢

sugarray4three

House Tilapia stands strong

ThreeRedStars

Chaos is a ladder

ltravis0

A salmon ladder.

ForeverYonge

“There must always be tilapia served at Winterfell”

RaffiBomb000

We must also be rid of the Phish Walkers

NoBenefit5977

The cartartar fish is ready for battle, alert the Sparrow king!

Live_Pomegranate_645

Ur goin to fish jail 🔫

Pretty_Lie5168

A great war for all of us.

meechie99

Absolutely safe to eat as long as they were always frozen until you decided to cook them and then thawed in the approved ways. They look a little darker than the tilapia I am used to selling, but it’s possible they weren’t CO treated for a more “organic”/“healthy” product.

HumbleAbbreviations

Yes.

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

The same people that talk about how gross tilapia is probably love "white tuna" when they go out for sushi lol Is it a trash fish? Yeah, kinda, but it's not even close to the worst thing you could choose to eat.

modlinska

Or oysters or mussels or lobsters that not so long ago people scoffed at them as bottom feeders

Syrinnissa

Why is Tilapia considered a trash fish?

Duhcisive

I don’t know if this is actually why, but from what I’ve always heard from people who dislike tilapia, is because they’re mass produced in fish farms, & rumors that they live off of eating literal shit. That being said, I personally love tilapia lol.

Adorable-Race-3336

I think it tastes like dirt .

FireWinged-April

For real, I get where people are coming from with the argument, but a lot of seafood commonly eaten are bottom feeders. I used to be one until I realized they're cheap, fry fast in a cast iron and when prepared with salt, pepper and spices, finish with a hit of lemon juice or white wine they're pretty bomb. Still offer reasonable protein for the cost and effort. Go to summer protein with a big salad.

TopProfessional8023

For real for real. Tilapia is not bad. It’s all in how you season it and cook it. I’ve made some killer grilled jerked tilapia tacos, etc etc. It ain’t a salt and pepper fish for sure, but even s&p ain’t bad in a pinch.

Jonesbt22

Blackened tilapia is fucking fire and I'll fight over it.

TopProfessional8023

I’ll fight them by your side!

sparrownetwork

It's not just a trash fish, it's a trash fish fed on human shit.

Difficult_Buddy_3071

Also known as shit fish

aquaculturist13

that's just not true lol Some tilapia (largely not exported to the US) is farmed in low-input systems that are fertilized with animal manure, the same way our vegetables are. The majority of tilapia you eat in the US comes from a company called Regal Springs or other intensive farms that use manufactured pellet feed

CIAMom420

Found the tilapia industry lobbyist. 😘

aquaculturist13

lol CIAMom420 you got me

brookish

Depending on where it’s farmed

gettogero

Only things that top tilapia for me is bluefin and catfish. No need a full tier list- being #3 alone is a strong statement

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

I mean escolar should easily top both of those. This is my point. People don't even know which things are worse for you, they've just heard "tilapia bad." It's a dirty fish that eats its own poo. There are things that pose much greater health risks than being "dirty"

RedditTrollin

Yeah definitely don't eat what you can afford because people online might think that you're not as good as them. Fuck that. It's perfectly safe and a good source of available nutrition. / Created in a lab, raised in a cesspool, whatever, it's food. People on Reddit might think you're a piece of shit for eatingTiilapia but I guarantee you that there are poor ass people living under a tarp somewhere who've never seen Reddit who would think you are lucky as hell for getting to have a whole piece of that fish to yourself much less that many pieces freezer burnt or not.

Trumpville-Imbeciles

I'm sorry but your username doesn't check out

freakinbacon

I fucking hate snobs. They're the pieces of shit.

Hexloq

Honestly Tilapia isnt even bad imo. My friends makes some amazing breaded/fried Tilapia. Saved us in huge way when we were struggling financially

FBVRer

IF it was properly sealed all the way until being defrosted and cooked - yea

No-Bee-2354

Nobody is talking about how you just thawed these out on two pieces of paper towel and soaked your counter in fish juice

xStyxx

Majority of people have 0 clue about food safety. The amount of times I’ve seen people handle raw meats and then go to their cupboard searching for seasoning with their raw, meaty hands… and if you try to correct them on it they get defensive and think you’re being a condescending asshole. I don’t say anything anymore, I just make sure not to eat at those homes.

Maleficent-Bit1995

Professional chef here. The basic rule of thumb in the freezer is 1 month seafood 3 months chicken pork and 6 for beef. That being said there are a lot of conditions that would change that. Was it vac packed? Was it flash frozen? Did u defrost on the bench or in the fridge? How old was it when it was frozen? But does it smell funny? Does it have a weird slimy texture? How are u cooking? Being that old and it doesn’t smell weird or feel weird I’d still cook it for a long time. Like in a curry or stew. I wouldn’t as a grilled bit of fish. Dispute that hat a lot of people will say food doesn’t last for ever in the freezer. It will still degrade. And the 1 month and 3/6 months are not hard rules set in stone. It is the bass level. It doesn’t mean on day 31 u can not eat. It means after that time the food will degrade in quality and safety.

[deleted]

If stored and handled properly, frozen food lasts indefinitely, it just degrades in quality.

awlawall

Fry it…and fry it hard

Time_wanderer_XIV

When is doubt, throw it out.

yimmyyangsOF

That sewer fish is still as poor quality as when it was fresh

MarineGF01

Still very good for it's cheap price

freakinbacon

So many people online proudly displaying how snobby they are.

Pure-Guard-3633

Yes.

Big_Dumb_Fat_Retard

As long as it was frozen the whole time and your freezer doesn't wildly fluctuate in temperature it should be safe top eat. Frozen food "never" goes bad, but if stored long enough it will taste freezer burned, taste rancid, have a poor texture and/or may have lost some of its nutritional capacity. Food that has gone rancid or freezer burned are still safe to eat but they taste terrible. I'd recommend slicing off a small piece, seasoning it and then panfrying it to see if it still tastes good. Especially for tilapia which is the most mild tasting fish there is so the off-flavors might be more obvious than with a more flavorful variety.

MeasurementEvery3978

hows it smell

weaponized_autism265

Your nose will tell you all you need to know, does it smell like you just walked in a $5 strip club? Maybe don’t eat it. Does it smell like normal fish? Cram it in your face.

AtomicHustle

That’s trash bruh.

hiways

Commercial tilapia is trash.

Signal-Round681

As long as not freezer burned it's fine. And anyone who is poo pooing farmed Tilapia better not be eating farmed Salmon.

distinguished-nugget

I love tilapia, is it poopy sure, is 80% of its composition poop yea. And it taste freaking good! That’s like saying I’m not gonna eat pork anymore I still am. I don’t care if pigs eat where they shit it still taste like a pig and a damn good one at that

Salsilitos

It will taste like fishy fish

shardoughnnay

Gamey compared to fresh and pink.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Long, deep freezes make fish safer to eat.

ClarityByHilarity

Yes but you deserve better.

sabboom

As long as it doesn't stink or smell fishy but ew.

AdOpen885

Smell it.

530nairb

It’ll be fine like you won’t get sick, but I don’t like fish frozen for longer than 3 months. The fat gets weird.

DingleBerryFarmer3

Probably gonna taste poorly. Seafood doesn’t freeze for long

bigshern

Nope

shadyjudgement

I cooked and ate some 3 year OOD frozen, breaded cod a couple weeks ago. Not dead.

killthrash

Smell it. When in doubt, throw it out.

jmaze215

Ni

bmoEZnyc

Tilapia never good to eat.

wsbboston

Sea rat never goes bad

Xtdragon

No. Tilapia is one of if not thee worse fish to consume.

1337_SkiTz0

when freezing fish, just freeze them in water. that’s how i’ve kept my catches fresh for longer periods.

Lucid-Design

Ion know. You tell me. Cook it. Eat a bite and report back

DrunkBuzzard

By the time you take the photos and post this and then wait for a responses my guess is it will probably be a no. It won’t be good to eat.

entechad

Tilapia is not an edible fish the day it is caught.

reel2reelfeels

caught is a strong word for a farmed fish

Splitsplatkitkat123

Dont eat tilapia nasty parasites

OneEyedDevilDog

Tilapia is farmed fish trash, dump it

HondaVFR96

Kinda looks like a Trilobite.

Brandyland23

I wouldn’t eat tilapia fresh out of the farm they come from

HFVS

It went bad appx 6 months ago

Silverbackdonkey

Bottom feeders of farm poop ponds…nasty fish when farm raised

bleetchblonde

It’s garbage fish! Don’t eat Tilapia!!

devildoggie73

Is Swai as bad?

Factorybelt

Talapia is one fish I stay away from period.

raxdoh

if it’s frozen, 6 months should be totally fine. just prob the texture wouldn’t be so good because freezing it for so long would damage the muscle tissues on it.

MentulaMagnus

Tilapia are fed human waste in water treatment plants and then sold off for eventual seafood market. They are one of the most unhealthiest fish to eat due to the high amount of cholesterol.

Evening-Classroom653

I don't think ANY tilapia is safe to eat. Dirty-ass fish🤨

DrKodo

You can eat anything from the freezer. It technically does not go bad - it might taste funky because it's freezer burned , but it's still edible.

Superagent247

Nope. Tilapia is not dark at all.

kpmags14

Fuck it: vagina fish fo dinnah

distinguished-nugget

I love tilapia, is it poopy sure, is 80% of its composition poop yea. And it taste freaking good! That’s like saying I’m not gonna eat pork anymore I still am. I don’t care if pigs eat where they shit it still taste like a pig and a damn good one at that

ElonEscobar1986

In England the rule is 3 months in the freezer. I joined a yacht as a chef and there was fish in the freezer from 1 year ago. I tried it. It was off.

pegw1n412

Safe but gross. Your call.

420blazeit32

I mean yea but why the f*ck would you

sadnessjoy

I don't see why not. Longer something is frozen, the ice does more damage to the cell walls, basically affecting the taste. This is why when you freeze meat, etc, they recommend freezing relatively quickly, try to avoid temperature fluctuations to reduce the "movement"/growth of ice and make the ice crystals as microscopic as possible, and consume within 3 months (longer and there's more chance of further cell wall damage). But even if the cell walls get damaged, it's still perfectly safe to eat. With all that being said, unfortunately, it's still tilapia.

adoptarux

Check for any off smells. If the fish smells strongly fishy, sour, or unpleasant, it may have deteriorated and should be discarded.

Kev-O_20

Eat it and let us know what happens.

CommodusIlI

Catch a fish, its fun

thackstonns

Tilapia is never safe to eat. Look at how it’s raised. It’s disgusting.

CocHXiTe4

Just plop it into soup, what could go wrong?

skzlr86

Tilapia is a terrible fish to eat. Because they’re farmed, there’s barely any nutritional value like most fish.

SojoboOfMountKurama

I wouldn’t eat fresh Tilapia.

Onlyheretostare

The only thing that would stop you is being Japanese..

Bitcracker

Tilapia is a shit fish

ZebulonRon

My brother I wouldn’t eat tilapia if I just pulled it out of the farm pond myself

Whatsuptodaytomorrow

Yes 👍

Phoyomaster

Eat it and let us know!

chaebs

Talapia is never good.

ActionMan48

Probably tastes as bad as it did 6+ months ago.

CrawlerCow

It smells OK to me.

rrTUCB0eing

As somewhat of a self proclaimed seafood expert…I think the worst fish currently available for sale and on menus today is tilapia. For a few nickels more you could be eating much, much better quality fish. Tastes like shit on a good day and that 6mo. old stuff is going to be nasty AF!

Aggressive_Fun4792

I am a pesca-pescatarian. I only eat fish, that eat other fish

Comfortable_Tap_4816

Yes!

sunny_hunny_elle

It looks like dirty butt crack

BornyLV

I wouldn’t give it to a stray cat.. and I don’t like cats.

ecestudentoflife

Nice that loans great

Inevitable-Heart-605

Feed it to the meow meows

Ok_Professor_8039

The answer is if you have questions if it good or bad get rid of it

-Cherished

Everyone who is posting about not to eat Tilapia because it’s a “trash” fish and eats “poop” is where this question/statement is being directed. I have heard the same about Tilapia and I was told to help avoid this a bit to only buy wild caught and not farm raised because farm raised packs so much fish together and this makes them less healthy and they all continuously eat poop. What is your thoughts on wild caught compared to farm raised? Also, since most shellfish(shrimp, crab, etc)are bottom feeders and eat a lot of poop, garbage and debris on the sea floor I heard they are also worse to eat if you buy farm raised and wild caught is much better tasting and better for us. So I’m also curious on opinions with the shellfish too. I appreciate any feedback anyone has.

SolidContribution688

Tilapia so cheap I’d just toss that and buy fresh.

Low-Bag5642

It looks poisonous maybe just a little

gilthedog

The texture might be off but yes, frozen foods stays safe indefinitely so long as it’s properly frozen and thawed.

Due-Concentrate-7275

Nah I Don’t Believe So It Doesn’t 👀Fresh After 6 Month’s Nah I Would Throw It Away & Buy Fresh Tilapia

harceps

Had a piece of pickerel that had been vacuum sealed and in my brother's freezer for 7 years. Best fish I've ever had. As for the Tilapia, it's safe to eat but not a great choice of fish.

StayEnvironmental440

tilapia, aka shit eaters, are never good to eat.

bigshitter42069

Eat it coward

_Auck

Have you ever had food poisoning? Obviously not. If you had you would answer the question yourself. 🤮

Bigmuscleliker567

Gross to my eyes 👀 😂

My_neglected_potato

I never play games with fish. If I am not 100% confident it is good, I wont enjoy it as much. If it is at all questionable, I pitch it. That’s just me. I know that you can never be 100%sure about all the food you buy and consume, but, I take all precautions possible when I can. Just an opinion, not actually an answer to your question.

yadbeyadwu

It seems that they are now more like zombie fish 🤣

Ok-Cash-146

You can cook it, but I’m not eating it.

Pisces93

Throw it out. And never buy tilapia again

InternationalBee5739

I wouldn’t want to eat that.

Slobsterz

In my professional experience… tilapia is almost always a low grade farmed product. Not all farm fish is bad but tilapia is for sure

TKOTN123

Gross

SirGravesGhastly

Bleah. Tilapia is awful even right out of the water.

PrettyAd4218

No

dildosticks

Trust your nose

xeiress

I just ate 1+ year old frozen halibut. It was delicious.

Flimsy_Diver_1473

Tilapia is gross yo begin with Google it. Get some real fish. Haddock or Black sea bass or fluke. All available this time of year.

Firefly1265

Tilapia is never a good fish to eat, its a bottom feeder and tastes like mud.

Southraz1025

I’d never eat Tilapia

TilDebtDoUsPart420

Looks fine, might be a bit bland. Former fish market owner here. Never froze for SIX MONTHS, but yeah, it's safe.

bisfunn

It’s Talapia I wouldn’t eat it fresh same goes for “Atlantic” salmon

KayCatMeow

r/eatityoufuckincoward

First-Anything670

Stills good!! Go ahead!!

Murky-Mammoth-5500

I’ve had scallops for almost a year in my freezer, am I good to eat them?

Poisson_de_Sable

Safe yes, good to eat, no

sixdachefJ

Safe yes but worst fish you could have gotten

[deleted]

How’s it smell? Personally, I don’t go for Tilapia. More of an Icelandic Cod guy.

pepperandplatinum

Tilapia is delicious and not a poop fish. People are being dumb. Google : Tilapia are primarily herbivores and don't eat poop unless they're starving. However, there have been reports of tilapia eating manure from poultry, livestock, or sheep at fish farms in Asia. This practice can increase the risk of bacterial contamination and may require the fish to be treated with antibiotics. However, manure is often used in fish ponds to fertilize algae and plankton that tilapia eat, rather than as food for the fish themselves. In North America, where tilapia are raised in carefully monitored water quality, this practice is not common. Responsible aquaculture producers may also raise tilapia in clean, oxygen-rich freshwater environments and feed them a vegetable-based diet.

Friendly-Morning-173

Tilapia is t seafood. It’s ditch fish. You grind it up and use it for chum.

Important_Win_9375

I won't eat Tilapia if it was just caught. Nasty fish. 🤮

zBellaLynnex

I don’t think it was safe to eat even 6 months ago if it’s tilapia but that’s just me. Tilapia terrifies me.

PattyPoopStain

Fish Wars 2024!

PercyBoi420

If tilapia isn't wild caught, I would suggest not eating it. If it's farm raised and tastes :muddy" and not simply muddy like bass can taste. Well I'm my words (as I have a good pallet being a chef) "why does this fish taste like shit?" Thats because farm raises tilapia is fed feces as they will eat it. I could smell what it was fed in its meat. I won't buy farm raised tilapia anymore. Only wild, is the only way I don't smell shit in the meat!

copperdoc

Toss it and grab some McDonald’s. Both will kill you but one is more fun

FailLog404

Frozen meat/fish is safe to eat (assuming it never went out of temp) indefinitely. It’s only the taste that suffers

fattfett

It's probably safe, but it's going to taste terrible.

edubbledub

Tilapia is poopfish. They are brought into fish farms specifically to eat the farm fish's poop then they're sold to unknowing people like you. Don't eat tilapia.

snekysnek69

Tilapia....literally used to clean sewage

Specific-Archer4216

You’re eating tilapia, it’s already shit.

Bi_DL_chiburbs

I'm guessing most here did not see the show Dirty Jobs hosted by Mke Rowe. There was an episode at a fish farm where I learned that tilapia was use to clean the tanks after the farm raised fish were harvested. Mike called them the pop eating fish!

Adept_Perspective778

Please eat. You asked the internet about food in front of you. Wow. Hope you find enough skills to live rest of day.

Electrical_Catch_919

Bottom feeders ?

Tabernash1

That stuff is their bottom feeders. Don’t eat it. They’re good day throw underneath rosebushes for fertilizer.

Tabernash1

And those of you that do you want to eat it bon appétit

ChemistCorrect4382

Yes, flavor might be off if it wasn’t vacuumed sealed.

BitchyFaceMace

I wouldn’t even eat fresh tilapia 🤢

JohnnyPotPie--

Yuck dude! You eat that filthy fish?

ukognos27

Deep fried and shredded make fish larb with it kinda like beef larb but with fish. If you don’t know what larb is it’s Thai minced meat salad with fresh herbs, lime, ground toasted stickrice grains and fish sauce.
