My wife wanted a "hot" avatar for her pirate, she finally got one too, but it took over an hour of cycling through the RNG avatars that popped up. The pirate generator is fond of big boys, old ladies, and dudes that look like they'll sell you meth lol.

Jestingwheat856

Dont forget spinach difficent popeye

The_Link_Crafter

I love this

fookalhu

thats so true lmfaoo

DarkHelmet112

I mean, we are supposed to be pirates.

[deleted]

they literally have Johnny Depp in the game

Sixoul

That wasn't until recently

[deleted]

He's still there

Kara_Del_Rey

And?

Bitemarkz

Why in the hell can’t they just have a proper pirate creator? they clearly have all the parts. Keep the randomize option in for those who want it, and let the rest of us pick what we want.

Dhiox

They did it because they didn't want a game filled with the exact same attractive pirate, like many games with character creators.

TheZealand

Aaand then they added cacky outfits so every 3rd pirate is in reaper PJs or is a terrible knockoff of Jack Sparrow lmao, that reason doesn't really hold water anymore (just like the ships of the aforementioned outfit wearers)

OGMcgriddles

If anything this proves his point though.

Davor_Penguin

No it doesn't. 1) It proves that people want a choice in what their characters look like. But there's not a ton of options to choose from so we get repetition. 2) I don't know any popular online game with character customization where everyone ends up looking the same anyways, so I don't get that argument. With the amount of parts and bling we have, it would be much more like RDR2 where people have so many customization options and go wild. 3) People are more creative than the randomizer. Especially in this community.

teawreckshero

1, this is not mutually exclusive with the point above 2, the original point was that players would largely choose to look "attractive", not "the same" 3, that's sweet, but realistically, this community isn't much different from any other gaming community. People always go with what they think is their "best" option from the options they are given. You're right that new players don't have many outfit options to choose from at the beginning, which is why when they unlock something as unique looking as reaper PJs (or Ocean Crawler) new players instantly see that as their best option. Similarly, if you're given a character creator, people will determine a set of character attributes that results in their "best" option, and for most people that's "unique looking and reasonably attractive". That's not the look that the SoT devs were (originally*) going for. Yeah you'll always have the players who choose to make [silly looking characters](https://i.imgur.com/yKWSofk.png), but they're the exception. The game will look how most players look. *At this point, given the flamboyant outfits they've added each season, I would agree that it's really the exception at this point, and I wouldn't be surprised if they went ahead and added a character creator. I think they haven't just because they don't see it as a priority feature that will retain players.

Only-Willingness-353

When you see a short portly Jack Sparrow it's pretty funny

edwardslair

Oh reign of kings… you were too good for this corrupt world. Everyone would make their avatar a midget because it affected the hitbox and made you harder to kill.

Bitemarkz

Well the alternative is people cycling for an hour to settle one half decent. Seems like a weird tradeoff to have the player somewhat satisfied with their pirate rather than have them play who they want. Seems like a design flaw in favor of achieving an aesthetic they want rather than what the player wants. EDIT: only in this sub will you see people arguing for less player choice. If the pirates all have the potential to look the same if they’re not randomized, then that’s a failure on their part for not having enough customization and cosmetic items. Other games manage this just fine. Also let’s not pretend that the current rotation of pirates don’t all look pretty similar anyway.

FinanceRabbit

Honestly feel like most players are happy with it. Prevents players from seeing the same 5 starter faces or whatever over and over again

Isgortio

It also means more people choose the super fat characters, they look fun.

Wezard_the_MemeLord

Exactly. If SoT will have character creator there'll be either thousands of almost same looking pirates, either people who thought out the character with smallest hitbox, either both of those with very little people with OG pirates who look like crackhead caricatures (Note, I like the fact that this is the way game looks like)

fwango

All pirates have the same hitbox, so no, people wouldn’t try to pick smaller characters for that reason.

HellsPopcorn

Same hitbox, but still a smaller visual target. any advantage no matter how small is still an advantage

Sintaris

I ask this earnestly, and I'm not trying to be snarky... but what are you basing this feeling on? Do you poll the community, routinely discuss it with players you encounter? Or since you like it, you're just assuming others do, too? My feeling - everyone hates the creator, whether they vocalize it or not - is purely anecdotal. I only have 4 friends who played this game at one point or another, and all of them despised the creator, myself included. When we \*finally\* got something "acceptable," we tried our best to put it behind us, and only a lingering bitterness appears when we see our pirates in 3rd person. I will take the god-awful creator from 2007's Mass Effect 1, which featured painted-on facial hair, over a slot machine that spits the same thing out 75% of the time. Of any game allowing custom creations, this is, without doubt, the WORST one I've ever seen.

FinanceRabbit

Just based on current upvotes and personal experience. Talked about it with crewmates when i first started playing but never really comes up. It fits the game very well, all the loot is randomized, voyages, what will spawn where, etc. Makes sense the character creation would be too. It has a very unique aesthetic and I think it's important that it stays that way

Sintaris

I'll grant you, this thread seems to be trending in defense of Rare, and I don't understand why. I can't think of one other multiplayer game with customization like this, where your avatar creation is limited to a slot machine. If you think it's justified based on other parts of the game being random, then you shouldn't be able to pick the ship you want, any of your ship decorations, or you weapons. All of this should be randomized, no? If customizing a ship to suit personal tastes is ok, how can it not be ok for the same function regarding your personal avatar? If it was handled competently, the aesthetic would be more than able to handle a PROPER character creator. Even if they had nothing but a few basic sliders for age, weight, complexion. I'd even be ok if they had preset faces you had to pick from. They could give us some basic creative freedom, and NOTHING is sacrificed.

MaxiMonkeyMan

Lots of people seem to want to be an anime princess in a pirate game, and they would try their best to get that if they had the option to customize, it could ruin imersion. Maybe if you don't want to be a pirate this game isn't for you.

Bitemarkz

The creator is designed by the same artists who make the random pirate elements. This weird scenario people are citing where there’s going to be anime princesses running around is so dumb. If the creator is designed properly, everyone will very much still look like a pirate. If they start introducing anime hair styles and non-pirate attire then that failure is on the team, not the players.

Sintaris

And you think forcing random builds - but having ZERO clothing or ship decoration restrictions - somehow stops this? There are so many immersion-breaking things in this game, from robot parrots to dogs in costumes, to Master Chief on the front of ships. But the horde of mongrels outside the gates waiting to create "anime princesses" is where we draw the line? Is that REALLY a big enough concern to warrant a refusal to include the MOST BASIC of character creation tools, something just about every other game with custom avatars readily incorporates? "Well, Andre, I quit Sea of Thieves today." "Really, Firmin? Why?" "I was wearing my Santa Elf pants, firing my Easter Bunny cannons - as one does - and over the course of 30 hrs of playtime, I came across eight ships. Five of them exchanged cannon fire with me, and I was able to board three. And of those three ships, ALL OF THEM were filled with beautiful anime princesses." "So in 30 hours, you were forced to endure 5-10 minutes of beautiful anime princesses?" "Yes. The game is RUINED, Andre, RUUUUUINED!"

karlhalla

Exactly!

suppleoak

idk, seems to be working out for them.

Sintaris

I'm blown away by the defense of less player choice, as well. Does this mean Rare should add another delay and retool Season 7 so we can no longer outfit our ships from the shipwright? After all, most ships usually end up looking the same, with the DA sails... We can just have an "Outfit my ship" button, and sails/wheels/cannons/etc will all be randomly applied from what the player owns. Player choice is SO yesterday, apparently. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

DJfunkyPuddle

Kinda seems par for the course

FallautHuN

So every pirate is unique

[deleted]

as much as i want more customisation, you have a point. if this happened then half the people wouldnt be the obese wrinkly whales the game intended them to be.

FallautHuN

You dont choose the chon life the chonk life chooses you

[deleted]

my current pirate is an exact clone of someone else

I-R3D-08-I

Deadass, I've seen the 'very fat with ultra square head and red hair' at least 6 or 7 times off new players. I spent 4 hours getting mine.

FallautHuN

Disguise kit...

willyermm

Yup and you’re super cringe for cloning them. Get your own pirate.

kaelon

Ensuring every pirate is unique was definitely the original design intent behind Rare's choice here in the random pirate generator. The other one, which isn't often appreciated, is that they had a theory that if people were "forced" to compromise with a randomized look, that over time, this would actually make players bond more closely with their characters. Not sure how that's worked out, frankly, considering that players can (and do) obsessively use potions to change their appearances.

Bitemarkz

With enough creation/customization options that can still be the case. As it stands now they all pretty much look the same anyway. People are more creative than a random pirate generator, they just need the tools and this game has been lacking in cosmetics since forever.

BuffoonMan57

Because then every character would look the same: hot, clear skinned, nice teeth, etc. In my opinion, it makes the game feel a little more authentic, because pirates are not going to look pretty after years of sailing and vitamin deficiencies. When I saw my character options for the first time, I liked how ugly they looked because it felt more pirate-y.

90degreesSquare

You underestimate how many people would go for the ES4 Oblivion approach to character creation. Myself included

Bitemarkz

I don’t buy that excuse honestly. The game should have enough cosmetic and customization options to let you play as whoever you want. This just seems like a lazy approach. Also nearly all the pirate variants look almost identical as is so it’s not exactly helping their case to give the player less choice.

Martith

Do... you actually know what the symptoms of Scurvy are? Because none of the models display ANY symptoms of scurvy (the one all sailors feared most) nor other forms of vitamin deficiencies. I feel sorry for you, that you think 'ugly' makes someone more pirate-like.

mobofob

I think it's worth sacrificing a bit of player choice in order to get much more diverse and interesting looking characters that makes the world feel more immersive. I think it's a great system for this game and it's an important part of what makes it feel like Sea of Thieves. Sure, player created characters can be interesting too, but not at all to the same degree as when professional artists have full control. Players just don't care enough for the most part to take the time creating a character with a very complex system, especially in a first person game where you don't even see your character most of the time.

Federal-Quarter4366

I think random pirates is a fun feature, you never know what you will gey

narveik

This system is so good you get so different looking pirates and you never see 2 alike. They wanted it this way they did not want people to make their own

Stovlari

I settled for the old meth-head look after 30 minutes of trying to get a good looking one.

Dironox

I've had my appearance change potion for about a year now, every time I log in I spend about the first hour shifting though them trying to find one I like. Get bored and back out.

Serenswan

I was going to ask if you were forced to use it if you had it and started looking, I guess this answers that in that you don’t? I like my pirate but she’s a little too thin, and I wanted to see if there was even anything better but not lose what I had while looking in case there wasn’t.

Dironox

nope not forced to change; once you use it you can back out and do it again later without it consuming the potion. From then on every time you log in it'll ask if you want to use the potion until you find a pirate you want.

diabeetus64

Wow I never realized how lucky I was when I got a hot action hero man on my second roll.

TheWhistlerIII

Mine looks like he hit a ship face first during a failed attempt at boarding another boat. I like it...

The_GhostWalkerr

Yeah.. I got a potion to change my character, i think i've spent more than 15 hours looking through it (not in one day) so looking through older comments i see that people got characters similar to what op wants.. i guess they are really lucky, i'm still stuck with old ladies or from time to time the game hits me with a character that has great facial features but the body looks like she-hulk (i don't like buff females)

SAD_BAGEL141

I guess you could just keep re rolling the creation menu but really its impossible to get that exact face

Brigon

Impossible or just time consuming?

MathBuster

Let's say 'Statistically not worth the effort'.

cabbagioloco

That was my nickname in high school :)

RangerSeventy7

Shush blitz

PurpleThyRandom

Dude had every name under the sun in high school.

DJfunkyPuddle

Like trying to get a 99 stat roll in Baldur's Gate.

Halo_Chief117

Time consuming. I spent over 2 hours on day 1 rolling to get the pirate I wanted. I was trying to get the same one from a beta test and I got him pretty darn close to the pirate I had.

fookalhu

thats what ive been doing for a long time

GenericUsername10294

If it's one you want, then no. Rare seems to know what type of pirate you really want and do t put that into the character generator.

godoflemmings

You say that, but last time I used a potion it immediately gave me buff Nigel Thornberry, which I didn't know I wanted until then. Edit - [SMASHING!](https://imgur.com/a/5ZC3bs9)

Dazd95

I don't play SoT. I need to see this.

SaltyFish69

Why are you here then?

Dazd95

I came from r/All I've always wanted to play SoT, but I don't own an Xbox. Just a PS5.

SaltyFish69

Oh, well don't you have a PC?

The_Crimson_Blade

Don't you have phones?

SaltyFish69

I do. Why?

Halo_Chief117

Oh bruh... 💀💀💀

LubbockCottonKings

It is playable on game pass via streaming. You can download an app on Android or you can access it via a webpage on iOS. Just hook up a Bluetooth controller and you're good to go.

Dazd95

I do not. I'd really like to get one, or an Xbox. But fuck man. Times are tough right now.

blondellamma

Please, my eyes need to bear witness to a Thornberry fit to conquer the sea of thieves!!!

PillsKey

Dude, I am fucking jealous

fookalhu

honestly, I believe u. Im only getting broad shoulder female chars.

Lotlouise

It took me 5 hours to get a decent female character, but I'm so satisfied when I open up my game now. I never knew it was possible to change your appearance. I just accepted the way my pirate looked when I started playing the game (she looked AWFUL, lmao)

GeekModeGaming

We just had a whole conversation in this thread about appearance and re rolls and i am pleased to announce that we have successfully informed at least one person about rerolls. it is crazy to me that they dont just put a disclaimer somewhere about the fact you cant change your pirate unless you [A.Pay](https://A.Pay) money or B.Get lucky and find an ancient skelly

_Gulli_

Or C. Progress enough in the Season Pass

fishvoidy

we can do rerolls?!

GeekModeGaming

Yes with ancient coins

GeekModeGaming

the character i ran for the first 6 monthes of my pirate career was a manly Woman. I didnt notice until a friend pointed it out. I sacrificed my launch crew eye of reach "among other things" to change it. I am glad they have the pirate re roll option for newer players

PearlsandScotch

I had a pretty beefy lady at first but got the appearance changer and found one kinda close to that one in about 20 min but she has one dead eye.

Darksideofthebob

I had no idea there was an appearance changer, lol, my pirate is a big breasted, well bearded woman, I’ve been using the Dark Warsmith skin to cover.

PearlsandScotch

It’ll cost you ancient coins in the emporium or at the tailor. It’s the appearance potion bottle

Darksideofthebob

I appreciate you, thanks!

GeekModeGaming

My absolute pleasure. Enjoy the seas with your new pirate!

GeekModeGaming

no worries. ill just kill this ancient skelly.... Aaaaaand its gone

PearlsandScotch

I do a lot of fishing when I can find a good rock to stand on and not get hurt by skellies, that’s when those bad boys pop up and I’ll drop a good fish to hunt that thing down

GeekModeGaming

Here is the key. Determine what is more rare. An ancient skelly or extra money after bills on payday. Personally I go for the skelly evey time

GeekModeGaming

Well now you know. Glad something good has come from my stupid rambling on Reddit for once

windandthewaves

You can remove a beard at any time by using the vanity chest on your ship or outside a clothing shop.

Darksideofthebob

I knew about that, it’s the big ol boobies I was wanting to change, Mama Willow is actually Papa Willow

windandthewaves

Oh haha, sorry I misunderstood.

Darksideofthebob

No worries lol, I’m sure someone will benefit from that info

GeekModeGaming

well if we combine her dead eye with an eye of reach, and SoT with RDR2 you have an unbeatable pirate

PearlsandScotch

Her dead eye is my favorite part, I won’t use some of my curses because it hides the eye

GeekModeGaming

OMG i know the feeling. Its like when you dont want to use tuck gear because it hides your gold curse. Some times the appearance factor is everything in SoT

Inspector-Remarkable

I was lucky, got exactly what i wanted first time i launched the game!

[deleted]

I think if you reroll for like an hour or two you should be able to get a character that's at least very close. My pirate looks like the woman right next to her, but with blonde hair instead of red. So you might get a character with one or two small differences. I wanted a pretty pirate too but I ended up giving up and embracing the tough footballer pirate and now I love her.

fookalhu

ahaha nice

Inner_Donkey

I feel like if I favorite the ones I like I roll more similar looking pirates? Could be a coincidence tho

Negative-Vehicle-192

I hope you like looking at randomly generated pirates für five hours

fookalhu

I can keep rolling while watching series kekw

Negative-Vehicle-192

Buy sum military rations to keep you alive while doing it

fookalhu

Dw, take out for the rest of my life

capricaswiss

The official SOT discord has a pirate fashion channel, lots of female pirates with smaller frames in there all the time. Just have to keep rolling.

fookalhu

Hey, I just want a good looking char

Alright fine, but you might want to go with something a little less specific, cuz characters are really hard to get exactly

fookalhu

Not exactly this char, but something simillar. Good face and slim shoulders

shhsandwich

Women exist in real life and play video games, you know.

NotHeco

They litterally said it wasn't for the horniness. Maybe it's a just a lass that wants a pirate that looks like herself. Not everything's for porn yaknow

Brigon

Bear in mind the hair can be changed by buying hair styles using in game currency and hair dyes, so you are only really after the face and body size.

fookalhu

yea ik, anything simillar works but im just unlucky ig

WritingTheDream

I want the one in the second row on the far right

Ac3Nigthmare

I have seen some narrow shoulder slim female and male pirates. They are rare on the generator so just keep doing what you are doing till you get close. Large and in charge or hour glass seem to be the main female models. I lucked out and got a no leg day male on my first roll. Not nearly as rare as what you are looking for but I’ll never reroll him.

EmpresssArtemis

Yes but that’ll take ages. I love my pirate took me about 20 min to find her. She’s a gap toothed bitch like me🥲

PhuzzyBond

I don't believe Rare adds all the models that they show. Some old ones I cannot see anymore. And some new ones actually don't look cursed, they are borderline human faces.

lordadewan

Man I really hate the rng character creation. I wish we could design our own.

MasterAenox

Yes, possibly the exact same pirate even, all pirates have a set seed on then, meaning with the right amount of patience you can get anyones pirate. I for one have a clone roaming around, exactly the same pirate.

fookalhu

oh cool

[deleted]

Literally never seen anything remotely close to that model. I’ve spent an inhuman amount of time in the pirate selection widow? |:

falcon_driver

Ha Ha, fellow human!

[deleted]

Yes, it is possible, BUT it will take hours to get somerthing very similar. I had to reroll several times to get a cute looking female pirate. The infinite pirate generator randomizes: - Age - Body type - Gender - Face Scars - Body Scars (separate from equippable scars) - Left blind eye - Natural hair color (sometimes it has a two tone variant) - Missing teeth - Beauty marks and moles for female pirates - Barely visible beard for male pirates - Eye open or closed - Makeup with black (or dark purple) lipstick and eyeshadow - Eye color - Nose height - Nose lenght - Different eye positions (in some cases) - Freckles and head spots - Hero or Rogue face - Skin tone - Lip size What you can ignore right now is: - Beards and moustaches - Haircut - Hair color - Clothes - Tattoos because you can change those whenever you want. I'd say focus on the face and body shape, don't let the clothes, hairstyles and tattoos distract you from what you want. Personally I'd prefer to have a normal character customizer with presets and sliders.

fookalhu

just body and face is what we need ig

[deleted]

I think rare wants pirates to look ugly

1TmW1

They're supposed to be pirates. That's part of the look.

tbyd

It’s possible, mine looks almost like that one but better, the faces isn’t as long. You just have to generate new pirates for hours and hours.

fookalhu

mind showing me it?

XoSkeleton23

Make sure you look at the face and not the hair on the generated pirates. People tend to pick their characters on the whole hair and face combo, when you only need to focus on the face, hair can be changed.

FATHER_is_that_you

With alot of effort yes

LittleCopper

If you looked like that, you wouldn’t be a pirate, would you

fookalhu

tell that to Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Caribbean

armorhide406

Who wasn't a real pirate either... Just a young girl peddled to be attractive.

Minor_Heaven

It took me a hella long time, but I finally got one that looked kinda like Belle, so it's definitely possible to get a pretty pirate!

I spent **well** over an hour picking my pirate. Worth it. Edit: almost forgot the point of this comment Technically, yes, you can get any pirate you want, the real question is how many times will you reload the pirate selections?

[deleted]

Yeah I have a similar one.

Cephalon_Niko

I have a good looking female character. Took like... maybe 8 hours total time in the character creator

ResidentElmo

A “good looking” female? No. My Fiancee tried twice each for at least half an hour. The first first time she gave up and settled for some buff woman, and the second time she thought she found one that was “good enough” but when in game it turned out to be an old woman… I just wanted a goofy looking white dude but mine turned Asian in game…

Maybe it’s not fruitless to them? Maybe their motives are more so aesthetic and cosmetic commendations? The only thing that’s obvious is that you seem to get off on assuming how people feel, and then presenting it as a fact to appear falsely superior lol. The whole point of customizing is to look how you want, the only thing that’s fruitless is hyper focusing about another persons preferences.

solidrow

You will never be a pirate

Ap-snack

I rolled for 3 hours to get my beautiful pirate.

SleepingYuuki

My pirate is somewhat similar to that character. It took me nearly 40mins of rerolling while watching a stream haha

Nerdament

I found a few dope looking pirates, took literally 3-4 days of just pressing X

VaderH11

Given the odds of all the player models (in that picture), it's about a 16/1 chance of getting that specific model as pirate (off topic: I don't see my characters model)

CopperSavant

So thirsty... lmfao

You want to jerk off to your sea of thieves character don’t you, fookalhu?

StonedSnawley

… they’re procedurally generated so yea. Like this is a very obvious question. Why even ask this without just going to google. Why do people use Reddit like this? Why am I alive?

fookalhu

lmk if you find anything on google

StonedSnawley

It tells you whether or not pirates are procedural, which means any infinite amount of combinations for their appearance is possible. Meaning the one you’d want is possible, just rare. But that would take some critical thinking skills, so I see why you asked here.

fookalhu

clearly u dont know that theres some faces removed apparently. so Im here asking to see if anyone has encountered anything similar to this

LordZorddan

No, every good looking character was taken for promotional materials....

BarleyBBQ

No, because that's not what a pirate looks like.

captain-kidd999

No
