you will have to accept that not all anime have to do the same things as AOT or give you the same feelings. there are still goated shows out there that maybe dont have the insane story and worldbuilding of AOT but maybe do other stuff better. some recommendations off the top of my head: FMA: Brotherhood- The quintessential starter anime before AOT came and took it’s spot. I would say it’s actually pretty similar to AOT S4 if it wasnt as gritty and dark, and was more adventurous. WW1 type aesthetic and setting, really dope power system and worldbuilding that explores themes like faith vs science, the nature of the human soul, war and genocide and racism, there’s the whole slowly uncovering a massive government conspiracy thing, lots of heart, large cast of awesome characters, etc. Its 60 something episodes long so it will still keep you occupied and it feels like a grand adventure with a huge scope, but it doesn’t waste a lot of time. JuJutsu Kaisen- So in this current generation of anime there is a trend of battle anime that tend to become a little dark and brutal later on, in order to subvert classic shounen tropes. JJK is the quintessential version of this and probably the coolest/most hype new gen mainstream anime. If you want to see cool powers and constant action with people beating the shit out of each other, and some really hype moments with a decently intriguing story, this is the show for you. Its animated by MAPPA (AOT S4) and you can tell that its their personal passion project, as the budget and production they pump into it makes their AOT adaptation pale in comparison. The arc that is just now starting in Season 2 is peak anime, and if animated properly will most likely be up there with Season 3 of AOT. So its a really good time to hop on the train. Vinland Saga- if you want something thats more serious and mature, this is the show for you. Its a very historical and straightforward story set in the medieval viking era during their occupation of England. In terms of tone or vibe think Vikings, The Last Kingdom, maybe Braveheart but as an anime, but probably better than those. It has an emotional and compelling story with great writing, especially in Season 2 which aired this year. the character development and growth is so well done and feels very real. Some insanely beautiful and well done moments in Season 2 that I could go on and on about, not even because of action or anything insane happening but just due to the writing and buildup of the story and characters.

jeinnyallover

love these anime you mentioned

ParticularPear3541

Would absolutely recommend JJK. It has shonen enough to keep you interested but also has cute and funny slice-of-life moments making you fall in love with the characters. It’s helped me a bit to come out of the depression that AoT caused

4ps22

depression you say…? buckle up for Shibuya 😭

liverstealer420

wdym Shibuya was so happy, in the trailers it looks dark and bad and depressing but remember how they made hidden inventory have really happy trailers? and it was really sad, Shibuya is the most wholesome arc ever

blinkity_blinkity

+1 for JJK, as a long time shonen fan, it’s my new favorite

killercmbo

You’re giving him false hope, JJK just added to my depression and made it worse (it’s an amazing show) 😭

ParticularPear3541

Yes I know I’m so sorry ! I’ve been feeling pretty sad about it too especially with the new season 2 because >!Geto is my favourite character and his backstory just breaks my entire heart into tiny tiny pieces!< but it’s also been a while since I’ve read the manga so the sadness is a bit more manageable for me

youcancallmejb

Hunter x Hunter is my favorite show (aot is right behind it for me) and does a wonderful job of setting you up to expect a somewhat light-hearted shonen before it completely spins you upside down… gets quite dark and serious with some complex, interesting themes. Another recommendation I must mention is Vinland Saga. Semi-historical Viking themed show that starts as a somewhat standard revenge story and blossoms into something absolutely beautiful. This show isn’t for everyone, but I can honestly say it changed the way I view life in more ways than one. Unbelievably satisfying and powerful character development.

4ps22

it really is the perfect classic shoenen. its light, adventurous, full of heart, but its not afraid to get dark and serious and intense when it needs to be. I feel like Attack on Titan was the introduction to a new darker, more brutal take on shounen in this recent generation, but FMA:B is perfectly balanced, outside of the overuse of chibi humor early on. no endless filler like naruto or one piece, just a very engaging and well told story

Remarkable_Ad1906

Fma>fma brotherhood . Brotherhood is for kids.

tragedyisland28

Brotherhood is absolutely the better story.

Riggymortis724

Not saying much. Both FMAB and FMA03 are peak anime and FMA03 is probably the best adaptation to be released without the source material finishing first.

tragedyisland28

FMA03 is absolutely not peak anime lmao

Riggymortis724

Actual arguments or just a lmao??

tragedyisland28

Lol I’m sorry, dude I wish I could. It’s just that I watched FMA a decade ago, and it didn’t stick with me at all. I barely remember anything from it. Sorry to waste your time 😅

4ps22

disagree

AlexH08

I'm watching it right now and I can certainly see why people like it so much, it's really good. But I find myself really annoyed by the "funny" moments, where ed starts screaming about how he's not short for 20th time and the drawings turn simple. I'm at ep 6 rn and it has bothered me a little.

sobangcha

If I remember correctly, the "funny moments" start to drop off around episode 19 or 26, maybe even earlier. They're still there throughout the story but there are way less of them.

Babo-Smith

Thankfully, you see a little bit less of that as the series goes on

offoy

Shonen anime *maybe* (I still think that hxh is just better), otherwise not really, everything fmab does is done better elsewhere. I recently started rewatching it and the quality (be it animation, direction, script or simply just dialogues) is just not up to par with the best shows. You can really feel that the show was aimed at teens, goofy facial animations, banal jokes, etc.; it does not stand up to scrutiny for it to be "the greatest anime ever made".

Hadouken---D

Xofurs

its pretty decent yeah, think i gave it like a 6 or 7? Its actually one of the best shounen so yeah this.

balerionthedread12

Great recommendations, I second these!

Trindler

I've only seen a handful of anime, and am hesitant about jumping into new ones, but your description of JJK & FMA: Brotherhood honestly sold me and I'm gunna start getting through them soon. I also have to second Vinland Saga, Finished season 2 a couple weeks ago & it still occupies my mind often. Such a moving story.

loco64

Even though FMA could be considered a starter series, that show nails pretty much everything. It has even better and more fleshed out backstory/history than AOT hands down. Even OG’s like Robotech/Macross/sdf (not getting into it) crushes deep story and character development. There is some awesome gems out there that will give AOT a run for its money, not to say it’s not one of the top.

[deleted]

As someone else who isn’t big on anime, just AOT and a couple of other fantastic ones, Jujutsu Kaisen should be in everyone’s suggestions

Smony

Except AoT never took FMA's spot and it doesn't even come close

theinfpmale

> Death Note > Code Geass > Rorounin Kenshin. > Cowboy Bebop > Psychopass Season 1 > Neon Genesis Evangelion > Full Metal Alchemist BROTHERHOOD. > Hunter x Hunter 1999, then later the Chimera Ant Arc on the remake. > Yuyu Hakusho These are only entry level stuff, it’s full of action. I wish you well on your trip, brother. See you again when you have been semi-traumatized by things. Happy watching 👍

Efficient_Hour_8806

Never see anyone mention season 1 of psycho pass, what a show

PrateTrain

That's because seasons 2 and 3 exist. Same reason you never see anyone bring up Darker than Black

Martin7431

Tbh, I prefer HxH 2013 for the whole story over 1999.

IllustriousPlastic90

Same, 1999 sound effects ruin the whole dark and gloomy aesthetic

2NDRD

10/10 comment

IllustriousPlastic90

Rurouni Kenshin author was arrested for something I can't mention on this sub, I won't recommend

Variation-Simple

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and the Berserk manga are what I would recommend

elepantstee

Holy shit i wanted to say these two too

Cecil2789

Berserk for sure. I finally watched ‘97 & I cannot wait to get my hands on the manga. Still need to watch the Golden Age Arc movies/episodes. Definitely skipping 2016 though 🥴😂. Imagine Mappa dragging themselves to hell putting their spin on Berserk 🤯 😵‍💫

pogba001

Don’t watch the anime! Go straight to the manga it’s amazing. And also berserk is far too dark to ever get a Faithfull adaptation

controversialcomrade

BERSERK yessssssir

ultramarineciel3669

JoJo isn't for everyone, specially part 5. But Berserk is a masterpiece.

Tsuku

Try Parasyte, it’s a short show but mature in theme and straight to the point. I loved it.

Jaded-Significance86

Parasyte is amazing. One of those great shows where you can't really recognize the main character by the end of the show, but in a good way

theBlueProgrammer

I'm about to read the eight volume. I've really enjoyed the story and questions it presents. It's quite interesting how much the anime differs from the manga. Most notably, the timeline the story takes place and some things that were omitted.

Martin7431

Would you say you prefer the manga? I’m wondering if I should give it a read since I loved the anime

theBlueProgrammer

I recommend it. One major difference is the timeline the story takes place. In the show, it takes place in early - / mid - 2010s, so smartphones and other similar technologies are prevalent. However, the Manga's story takes during the late 80s / early 90s, so many phone calls are taken in phone booths. It also explains why you don't see any text messages being sent in the show. Another instance is that Shinichi's dad uses a tablet to read news articles in the show, whereas he reads the newspaper in the manga. There were fun comparisons I made to be able to spot them. I really enjoyed his artwork, and there is a bit more humor in the manga, especially with their wide expressions. The characters in the show don't nearly show as much expression. Edit: The following image doesn't contain a spoiler, only one for humor. [This](https://images.app.goo.gl/UtsE7DiSaDqbmyRW9) is the image. As you can see, the two men are much more expressive than the couple that replaced them in the show.

TeishAH

Also look up Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas (the band) they do the theme for Parasyte and are soooo amazing new fav band.

Sequelsuck

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is much more light-hearted and comedy-heavy than AOT but also has its fair share of genuinely horrifying moments. It shares similar themes as well as similar WWII parallels, I guarantee you will enjoy it if you keep and open mind and are ready to watch something a bit more cheerful than AOT but still with that darkness lurking underneath the surface. Vinland Saga is a masterpiece, it's a historical Viking epic that follows the journey of one Thorfinn Karlsefni. It's rich with epic and hype action, as well as emotional and sad moments. Vinland Saga isn't just an action series, it's a drama, an emotional, spiritual experience, and even though some may say Season 2 is boring due to its lack of action in the first half, if you truly enjoyed the complex themes of AOT, Vinland Saga is for you. Death Note is an absolute classic and one of the most iconic Anime ever made. Hell, the dude in my profile picture is the main antagonist of the series, and oh boy is he a great character. Death Note is full of suspense, hype, and overall has a vibe that is unmatched. It's quite possibly the most addicting and bingeable Anime ever, you will surely enjoy.

eMpSkayP

antagonist... u mean protag right?

Jaded_Ad3695

I think L qualifies as a Hero Antagonist to Light's Villain Protagonist.

HamsterFromAbove_079

Vinland Saga. One of the few anime that actually rivals AoT.

bluparrot-19

Most Superfans of AOT are too dumb and bloodthirsty to get the important story Vinland Saga tells

mala_r1der

Looks more like you're too dumb to get the important story Isayama tells

Appropriate-Shoe-266

Not our fault His ending really fucked it huh

Rinteoki_ReToru

i get it bro, AOT is great, but not the fucking chapter 139 for me, that shit was horrendous

This_Middle_9690

It doesn’t. But it is still quite a good anime and worth watching

TomtheStinkmeaner

Yeah Vinland Saga doesn't rival AoT, it surpasses it.

mala_r1der

In your dreams maybe

TomtheStinkmeaner

Remind me which one is better rated in MAL again? So I don't think it's only my dream... I think bitch blocked me 🤣 What a pussy, he can't stand different opinions.

alPassion

MAL is literary the last place I would go and check for an objective show rating considering it’s just full of angry, snob and elitist basement dwellers who genuinely think that writing fan-fictions and watching all non-mainstream anime’s the same as having a degree from a writing program.

This_Middle_9690

Weak bait

DOOMFOOL

Not bait at all. AoT wishes it could’ve told the profound story Vinland Saga did. Isayama definitely tried but you can tell he had some struggles with the ending and it just doesn’t quite get there

mala_r1der

Lmao. Vinland saga tells a story about a fantasy world where violence is always wrong, everything can be solved with words and so on, that's not the real world in the slightest. Isayama created a story that, despite being set in a world with titans, is way more real than VS ever could, especially the complexity of the characters, the choices they make and the reason behind them, deal with it.

noblese_oblige

bruh

TomtheStinkmeaner

Weak answer.

vitaminedrop

ehhhh it’s good and well written but idk about rivaling

kirisakisora

aot fanbois try to to dickride aot challenge level impossible... the characters and development in vinland are enough to compete and surpass aot's plot, story, world building and everything else. (and im not including that dogshit of an ending just to be fair to you)

vbs221

Watched both seasons of Vinland Saga, and my mind is yet to be blown. Where is the plot twist? By S2 AoT, there would have been multiple plot twists. Where is the mystery in Vinland Saga? I’m of the opinion AoT is 10/10. FMAB 10/10. Vinland 8.5/10. If you don’t like it, cry about it.

Appropriate-Shoe-266

I didn’t realise a story needed plot twists to be good LMAO

alPassion

wow we’re seeing another show where the common trope of a killer to become a pacifist is used. i’ve never seen such a profound theme used in other shows before like Dexter, The Americans or Barry.

Castrelspirit

WHERES MY PLOOOT TWIST WAAAHH WAHHHH

kirisakisora

yikes, chill with that 3rd grade passive agressiveness. i dont give a single fuck about you or your opinions, i was talking to the other dude. and are you blind? i said that the characters in vinland surpass whatever mediocre twists you have in aot so calm yourself and enjoy that mid plot of yours or reply back with some comment dissing vinland or myself, and just for reference id rate aot a 7 and vinland a 7.5 so i aint crying nor will i expect you to give a shit 🧦

[deleted]

Your opinion on anime contrasts with mine? WELL FUCK YOU! \-you, just now.

kirisakisora

im astonighed that you figured that out, did you also see that the reason i replied with that is coz the guy did the same thing as well? y'all share the same brain cell frfr. you tried to do the thing which i just did.... but failed \*clap clap\*

[deleted]

He didn't really. He just shared his opinion and here you are insulting both of us again.

kirisakisora

you need to put on your glasses coz the first dude shared his opinion, and the other dude said "" eehh, nope"". then came my comment and then came you... who tried to do what i did but to the wrong person coz yea, you really do share the same braincell and that isnt even an insult, just facts

Hadouken---D

HamsterFromAbove_079

That is one opinion. I don't think it's correct. But you know what they say about opinions.

SorrirBoy

It's okay, internet has room for wrong opinions too

youcancallmejb

I think it’s easy to go ahead and say Vinland Saga isn’t for you. That being said, I genuinely don’t think you know what abysmal means.

DOOMFOOL

Are you aware you can have an amazing story without “intrigue” and plot twists?

Nobodyherem8

AOT is in my top 3-5 too but you have to watch shows not expecting it to be like AOT. You have to enjoy the show for what it is. That being said, I heard Full metal alchemist Brotherhood is good. Monster is another good anime. Or deathnote.

This_Middle_9690

Those anime are great but they are still not even close to AOT.

8_Alex_0

Monster has way better characters than aot not even close tbh

iNaytmer

No offense but for me Monster is not as good as AoT. I tried watching it before but after 20 episodes, I can't continue it anymore. And I think aside from Johan, no other character in that show is iconic and memorable. Plus the pacing is so slow, the same reason I quit watching One Piece at ep 800.

KienIsCool

Other way round. Monster failed to achieve the message they tried to convey, which AOT did. Who is the real monster? In aot, you are conflicted so many times and question morality. The people you thought were the enemies, you start to understand and like. You don't know who to root for cos war is complicated.

8_Alex_0

Not even what??? A character like say Mikasa is just bland and boring compared to every other character in monster bro stop coping

KienIsCool

Reiner, Erwin, Floch, Grisha??? These characters are nuanced and interesting, more so than monsters. You actually understand their motivations unlike in monster where they has a villain as good as Johan but barely did anything with him.

[deleted]

I would argue FMAB storytelling is just as good, and Monster exceeds Aot in terms of character depth and writing

Nobodyherem8

Maybe but they’re all just as enjoyable as AOT, some you may find more depending on your taste. Hell there are even some anime that aren’t even popular/highly rated I’ve enjoyed as much as AOT. Just gotta search for them

DOOMFOOL

You’re right. In many ways they are even better

kirisakisora

dude, there's people who dont even like aot, tf is your point ? he's asking for recommends so let op choose.

Eggowithmilk

Watch code geass

mongeatsmung

Underrated comment. The other recommendations in this post are great too, but Code Geass is built for an Attack On Titan fan.

AstroSloth_1

Im a massive aot fan but honestly didnt like code geass. I gave it about 7-8 episodes before i dropped it

ultramarineciel3669

Code Geass season 1 is gold. But season 2 has lots of cheap twists and the plot wraps up pretty quickly. Killed the fun for me.

Worried-Point-5386

JIBUN WOOO

Molgera124

Try Hunter x Hunter

Smashbroser

A hidden gem is Ranking of Kings, extremely beautiful and unique artistic style, awesome character development and plot. My absolute favourite. Chainsaw Man is fun, great animation, fights and amusingly silly and pretty gory. Jigokiraku/ Hell's Paradise is also very pretty, very mature and seems to get a promising second season. If you want something especially dark and heavy, watch Berserk, I prefer the original series from the 90s. If you want something more comedic I can really recommend: One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100, Mashle, Spy X Family. Those are some of my favourites.

jenryalee

Second Ranking of Kings. Doesn't get nearly the amount of praise it deserves!

Tal29000

I would say save chainsaw man until after you have a grasp of anime in general, because a lot of what makes that manga fucking genius is how it fucks with tropes and subverts the standard shonen formula. But that aspect of it only really works if you have a grasp on those tropes and have an idea of what to expect from a standard shonen series. I'm sure you can have fun with it even if it's your first show! But it's not really designed to be an entry anime, as incredible as that story is.

kirisakisora

i'd rather he just reads berserk honestly, also spy\* x family

DOOMFOOL

Lmao what? Why would you recommend spy x family to someone who’s first anime was AoT? Nothing that he said hooked him in AoT exists in Spy x Family

Smashbroser

Isn't it obvious? Spy x Family and AoT are both dealing with wars, both focus on family conflicts by forcing children to fulfil a parent's mission, and to conclude both are heavily influenced by Germany. Case closed. ... just kidding, I only recommended my favourites, the list is pretty unrelated to AoT. OP didn't really specify what he was looking for, only that he/ she enjoyed AoT :)

John_Wicked1

While I wouldn’t recommend Spy X Family to someone looking for a comparative anime to AoT, it’s still a very good anime and can help balance out the darker toned anime’s with something more light and wholesome….who can’t get hooked by Anya?

kirisakisora

bro calm your tits, i didnt recommend it , the guy who i replied to did, i just corrected his typo

Diamondinmyeye

Eighty Six, Re:Zero, and Chainsaw Man are what I would recommend to an AoT fan. Most Shonen Jump series are a little too thin on character and have a lot of power of friendship aspects. But if you go into them letting them be what they are, some are quite good.

klamkock

same boat, started with AOT and was off to the next anime but didn’t realize how much exposition, inner monologue, and over explaining other animes had compared to AOT

This_Middle_9690

That is what truly makes AOT one of a kind, it excels at things that anime (as a genre) is not supposed to do well. It has well written dialogue, believable character motivations, a captivating story, and great music. As a result every character feels more real than in most anime.

ActiveBicycle3584

Have you watched much outside of shonen bc this seems like a very shonen only take

Caleb_Phillips

It ruined other anime for me for this exact reason.

apegantz

Noragami is a decent story with some good characters but the main ones always shine through. Also I'd suggest Gurren Lagann. Shits wild. Also Code Geass is masterclass. Similar to Aot with the main character doing what he does for the betterment of the people and country.

yvngxlxwli3t

You should watch evangelion and serial experiments lain

huggablesnowman

chainsaw man :D

001Slow_Bruh

Eh, not rly for someone who just watched AoT lol

Jaded-Significance86

Agreed, chainsaw man has interesting power sets, lots of gore and action. Similar to Jujutsu Kaisen in that way. But it seems like the story bends the female characters backwards just to feed the horniness of the main character. I've become numb to fanservice, but it's off-putting for a newbie

TrailofCheers

Wait pls explain the female thing because I’ve watched the anime and read the manga and I don’t get that impression at all. Not even close.

Jaded-Significance86

It's the way that Power, and Makima act. They both use their sex appeal to motivate Denji to get what they want out of him. Mind you I've only seen the one season that's out so that's all I'm working with. Their use of their own bodies to manipulate Denji is quite blatant. They don't have any reaction whatsoever to Denji's horniness. On one hand, sure, it makes sense in the story why they are that way. But it almost seems to me that they were written that way SO this dynamic would work. I could be reading too much into it and it's hard to figure out the intentions of the author but that's just my two cents

TrailofCheers

If you’re anime only then it makes sense you feel that way. Yeah Makima is using her sex appeal to manipulate Denji and she continues to do so because it gets results. Like why would she stop if it’s working? Power does it at first to get the Bat Devil killed, but after she acts relatively normal. If anything, you should have a bigger problem with Denji’s character since he’s such a fuckin moron lol Hell, you’d have a better argument with the one eyed chick since she basically nearly date rapes a minor and it literally serves no purpose to the story at all. Anyway, things start making more sense as the story progresses.

Zriza

95% (I made it up) of the people who read or have read the manga's main praise to the series is the writing of the women. Granted, the bar is in hell (heh), due to the state of modern shounen, but chainsaw man should really not be the focus of such issues, because frankly fujimoto has actively improved on most of the tropes. JJK and hells paradise are in a similar boat, though the anime of hells paradise is, unfortunately, a back pedal thanks to how they're using yuzuriha. When you include part two, thanks to you know who (not voldemort in this case), the execution is blatantly obviously. Looking back on part one as a whole, the character arcs wrap up nicely, and there is pretty nice implied explanation for it all in retrospect. The anime plays up the fanservice, and being only 13 episodes, you there's just not enough seen yet. I think if the rest of part one, specifically the last arc, is handled well, this take will probably disappear from anyone willing to give the series a serious chance.

HomelanderVought

Dark shonen trio (Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise) Plus Vinland Saga and Berserk.

FORLORDAERON_

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Chainsaw Man, Death Note, Ghosr in the Shell, Cowboy BeBop.

AP_Feeder

My recommendations are Vinland Saga, Chainsaw Man and Parasyte

Artistic-Coat-5229

What jojo's bizarre adventure it's amazing

14JLingz

Same, AOT is in its own tier

The-Last-Lion-Turtle

Re Zero, Made in Abyss and Gintama are my other 3 favorites

kirisakisora

goats imo, even tho i love aot i love these more (obviously this isnt gonna be the same case for most of this sub)

Real_eXwhY_Z

AoT is incredible but it doesn't even crack my top 5 anime ever

John_Wicked1

Then drop your top 5 list.

Real_eXwhY_Z

Not gonna mention the SoL shows and only ones that have similarities with AoT that I have rated higher Evangelion Code Geass HxH Vinland Saga Gurren Lagann FMAB AoT is most definitely an incredible show, but it is nowhere close to perfect, especially later on. There are several shows just as good/even better, but that's just my opinion. You could have AoT as your favorite show and It would be a very valid choice, but I just wouldn't agree

ianindy

Vinland Saga. Incredibly emotional viking saga. Season 2 is fantastic. Deathnote. Very clever story about morality. Chainsaw Man. Wildly violent story about a boy and his dog...and boobs.

mosenco

Demon slayer has great.animation and fighting at same level of aot If you want a story more adult try death note. This is even better than aot for me

noshitwatson

AOT is definitely my favourite piece of art regardless of medium. Although it’s impossible imo to match the breadth and depth of AOT, the anime series that I enjoy Top notch: * Legend of the Galactic Heroes * Steins;Gate * Avatar the last Airbender (if you count as anime) * Haikyu!! * Re:ZERO * Mushoku Tensei * Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood * Monster Very good: * Vinland Saga * Death Note * Code Geass * Erased * Ergo Proxy * Jujutsu Kaisen * Chainsaw Man

silveroburn

Finally someone with both monster and steins gate on their lost T_T..also I gotta keep a reminder to watch legend of the galactic heroes cause I keep forgetting

abellapa

Death note is pretty good, not aot good, but it's great It's 2 season with 20+ eps per season I think

abellapa

I watched a few anime before Aot (Death note, Beyblade Metal, Inazuma original series and bit of inuyasha but that's basically it) Imagine My Suprise when Aot blows all this shows in quality, setting insane standards not only for animation but for shows in general My favorite series of all time used to around this main trio Breaking Bad(+better Caul Saul), Walking Dead and Game of Thrones suffice to say got disappointed towards the end and was replaced in the trio by the 100 or sons of anarchy, Walking Dead even though I loved and it's a classic for me, I recognize the quality trought the series varies towards the latter half So Breaking Bad was pretty much the only show that actually got better with each season and was my favorite, then I watch Aot, My biggest Suprise in television history I never once thought a animation series would turn out to be my favorite series of all time but here we are Almost no show, live action or animated will come close to Aot, calling it masterpiece is a fucking understement

renkendai

If you are up for reading manga, Pandora Hearts. They didn't do it justice with the anime and hasn't been finished either. The manga is complete. I guarantee that you have to read it.

21Justanotherguy

My man you can now try to watch Vinland Saga (which is very similar to Aot talking about the tipics of the story). You can also try with Death Note.

Seboy666

Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica cuz Gen Urobuchi is the GOAT. (For F/Z, dont let the first episode discourage you, the world building is pretty intricate but not required to understand and appreciate the show)

AeonOfForgottenMoon

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, one of the greatest animes of all time. Watch the 90s OVA, you'll be completely blown away. If you think AoT's story is deep and insightful, wait until you see Legend of the Galactic Heroes

hassantaleb4

Yeah, I agree AOT is goated

abellapa

Average Aot viewer Because the show is that fucking good

Xydron00

make that statement when the series ends.

StandardGenius

One Piece does

Odd_Scratch_1944

Jujutsu Kaisen. Shibuya arc is happening rn and to me it’s the best manga arc of all time so would recommend.

Exelior_

I swear I've seen this exact same post like 50 times.

This_Middle_9690

Vinland saga is great. Chainsaw man and jujitsu kaisen are a little different but high quality. If you like bloody more serious anime samurai champloo is fantastic. If you want something light and fun try spyxfamiky. There are some really good slice of life animes out there. I didn’t think they would be for me until I tried them. But to be honest AOT is the pinnacle of anime. There’s no other show that even comes close to touching the magic of the first few seasons of AOT

Breadnailedtoatree

Unpopular opinion but I quite liked Sword Art Online after AOT

kirisakisora

same, people love to give the same boring ass reasons to why they hate it, but its just a normal action/romance anime, which has banger ops eds and osts. animation is also great. they fanbase just never cares about defending it when it gets hate so thats why its become so much of a meme like how demon slayer used to be/ (still is ?) the vocal minority will really never grow up

renkendai

First season is captivating as hell. But returning again and again in different games dragged it out.

Erluq

Exactly what I experienced. The only way for you to move pass that is to look for a different genre of anime. Look away from action & gore stuff and turn your attention to something like slice of life, comedy or even romance animes. It’ll help you get over aot for a while and open your mind to different things that are also as good. If you like comedy & romance, I suggest oresuki. This is genuinely one of the funniest romance anime I’ve ever watch. Or if you just want comedy watch Grandblue which imo is peak comedy in anime. It’s also good to watch animes that cover things you’re passionate about. For e.g if you like volleyball, watch haikyuu or watch Dr. Stone if you’re passionate about science and technology evolution. Anime covers so many different topics you can find one that matches your passion

Tempathetic

Same!!! There are a few that are great, but none of them come close to AOT! If it's not absolutely terrifying from episode 1, then I don't want it!

xdyldo

AoT is definitely in it's own tier. The best of the best. If you do want some others that I really enjoyed, 86 is probably the closest in terms of enjoyment. Vinland Saga, Death Note, Code Geass and HxH are all great.

camew22

Watch JoJo's. I thought I'd hate it but it's honestly really good. No where near AoT levels but it's good in it's own right.

therealmillionplusx3

gantz, berserk(orignal s1 not remake for first season) and ajin for dark and gorey anime defantly recommend trying gantz. a few random suggestions of anime i enjoyed - scryed, gto, air gear, fma brotherhood, lost village, ghost in the shell, gundam seed, death note, code geass, the future diary, samurai x trust & betrayal, gintama, saiki k,grand blue, cyberpunk edge runners, baki, bleach. theres tons of decent animes out there you just gonna find something you might like but theres also alot that aint so great like most storys created these days, you just gotta sift through everything n look for stuff u might like. all the best and have a good one

Additional_Rip_1706

>gantz, berserk(orignal s1 not remake for first season) and ajin This are titles for reading, not watching

[deleted]

I dropped AOT midway season 2 just got boring for me. There are alot better animes IMO

Banda-e-khuda

You failed miserably then. Season 2 is the least favourite season for me. I’m surprised you got introduced to the beast titan and decided to call it boring lmao. Anyways there’s a lot of politics involved between the humans in season 2 that’s why maybe you found it boring. Id advise to continue season 3/4 are the best seasons for me

leiztt

VIVY: FLUORITE EYES SONG

CherriKola

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a must watch. It's simply amazing

AttemptedRev

Ngl AoT kinda overrated. I dropped off in the middle of the 4th season. I say this mainly because there's so many people that are gobbling AOT cock like their life depends on it here that it is, legitimately, sad. I get it's the Fandom sub for the anime, but chill. Other shit is just as good as AOT and other shit is, yes, better than AoT. And that is an opinion you will have to live with instead of acting like children.

UberEinstein99

Try One Piece! It might seem very different very different in tone at first, since it is a more optimistic show than AoT, but there is a lot of tragedy under the surface. It’s the only anime that made me cry and feel more sad than AoT. The two shows do have a lot of core similarities: They are both shows that explore the idea of “freedom, and what it truly means to be free. They both have a fantastical world that expands in surprising ways as the story unfolds, and they both have a ton of mystery built Into the story that the characters really have to work hard to get the answers to. The action is really good in One Piece, and there is a great cast of characters as well. It doesn’t have a ton of filler compared to other long anime, but there is some, and the pacing can be slow at first. If you do give it a try, I recommend watching it in 1.5x speed, and all the filler episodes are listed online so you can skip them, but again, there’s not much filler. If you want, the One Piece live action adaption came out on Netflix, so you can check that out to see if you might like the story before committing to the anime.

Memo544

My advice is to look for anime that have a similar tone instead of a similar genre. I liked AOT but normal shonen anime weren’t doing it for me after that. You could try sci fi shows (like Steins;gate, Psycho Pass, and Ghost in the Shell SAC). Some people like Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. Or you could try isekai like Re;zero. Death Note and Black Lagoon are pretty good if you’re interested in crime drama. I think the reason I like AOT is because of its intensity, emotion, and maturity (relative to certain other anime). So I found more success looking for those criteria than looking for shows that are similar in plot to AOT. Basically branch out outside of the traditional shonen genre. I suppose if you want another take on the war type anime there’s Vinland Saga which deals with similar themes.

BaronParnassus

Yeah I'm normally not an anime fan but absolutely loved this series

Shack691

Don’t go for anything non seasonal if you don’t want filler, so no bleach or black clover. I recommend anime original series such as Vivy or Death parade as they meld the story around it being in anime format, though there are some good source following ones like Re:zero, one punch man or Mushoku tensei. Then there’s ones which play it a bit more loose with the source material which often works well such as saga of Tanya the evil or trigun stampede.

Ostility

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death Note, Chainsawman, or Erased are what i usually recommend after watching AoT

balerionthedread12

AoT is definitely my number one, but some other shows have brought me a lot of joy too. Jojo’s, Vinland Saga, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen I thought were all pretty cool in their own ways. My biggest problem after AoT was going into other shows expecting/wanting them to be like or be as good as AoT, and I realized after a while that just isn’t realistic. If you can go into the above shows with an open mind I think you’ll find there’s a lot of other great anime out there!

[deleted]

My first anime was demon slayer but before that I hated anime for no reason so I was just watching it because my friend pushed me to but I watched aot it completely changed my image on anime and now I’m addicted

FluffyPool3730

I recommend one punch man and saiki k, one punch man is a comedy anime and it will make you laugh, and the disastrous life of saiki k is also really good, they are both decently short but amazing animes

JiovanniTheGREAT

I would try Summer Time Rendering if you're into AoT. Serious storyline with fantasy elements that are rooted in reality and none of the goofy, overdone, comedic relief moments like the ones that are littered throughout series like FMA: Brotherhood. It does have comedic relief, but it's natural and not Ed flipping out about short jokes every other episode. It is short which is a downside but it tells the story and gives a good conclusion.

charbo187

Watch Berserk and Neon Genesis Evangelion

FemBodInspector

Death note, FMA brotherhood, demon slayer All really solid with no filler I also think arcane on Netflix and invincible on Amazon prime are incredible but they aren’t technically anime

itsmeDreadShock

Berserk ?

You_Need_Milk

This is the curse that afflicts people who watch AOT as their first anime. For me, I've found other anime that come close, but none have passed it so far. It doesn't really matter to me as long as you can find some other anime that you still enjoy; I've really enjoyed Vinland Saga.

Mal_Terra

AoT was my first too, and I’m still pretty casual. Since, I’ve watched and loved One Punch Man(comedy), Cowboy Bebop(space western), Spy Family(60s spy dramedy) and Chainsaw Man(acid trip)

Mythik16

I watched/read AOT as my first animanga and thought the same years ago as I’ve branched out I’ve found plenty that in MY opinion are better (I know this won’t be a popular opinion here). Steins;Gate - A suspenseful, time travel, mystery, thriller, in my opinion the greatest anime of all time. Slow to start but as you watch you understand why it was slow to start. A brilliantly executed romance side plot if your into that Vinland Saga - Contains one of the greatest protagonists in animanga, amazing action for the first season but then develops into a masterpiece of character development. Code Geass - Action filled, incredibly smart protagonist with a very interesting ability, suspenseful and keeps you guessing all the way through. Monster - A long slow burner psychological mystery anime which has arguably the greatest antagonist in animanga it’s filled with suspense and absolutely brilliantly constructed characters. These would be my recommendations to you.

MysticAttack

That's pretty funny, AOT was my brother's first anime (that I could get him to sit through more than a couple episodes of) and he feels mostly the same way. In case your taste is similar to his, his favorites outside of AOT are Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Hunter x Hunter

imaginedodong

Try Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann; Nice not long episode list, nice character development, actual lore is happening and a plot twist, Ost are good too. For comedy I liked Gintama it's goated for comedy genre.

MarvinTraveler

Several people have mentioned good series. You are not mistaken about Attack on Titan looking superior to pretty much anything else. Here some more recommendations: - {Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex} Great science fiction, with a fair share of philosophy and action. The 90s movie based on the same manga, although with a more intellectual approach, is a masterpiece. - {Psycho-Pass} Dystopian science fiction with some really interesting ideas. - {Hellsing: Ultimate} Do not confuse with a TV series titled only “Hellsing” which was done while the manga was only in the first chapters. Hellsing: Ultimate is a mini-series of 10 OVA which follow the manga pretty much verbatim. Pedal to the metal action, gorgeous animation, excellent music, a phenomenal anti-hero as protagonist and one of the most impressive villains I’ve seen.

AscendedViking7

AOT was my first one. Nothing ever beats it, but it does come close. Here's what I've really liked: Neon Genesis Evangelion Death Note Demon Slayer Cyberpunk Edgerunners Violet Evergarden Castlevania Berserk '97 (It's dated, but give this one a chance. Then read the manga. Best seinen ever. It inspired Dark Souls too.) I do intend to watch Eighty-Six, Chainsaw Man, Code Geass, Vinland Saga, Akame ga Kill, Made In Abyss, Ergo Proxy, Uzumaki (whenever that comes out), Steins;Gate, and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood sometime.

magic7877

idk man, i've seen almost all popular/basic anime and one piece is my favourite

Ghotil

Yes, we call this breaking bad syndrome.

Eugene_Gene_714

I agree with you, AoT is my Number 1 anime, but followed by Steins;Gate Try Steins;Gate my man. It is also a 10/10 imo Probably wont top AoT but I thought it would for a bit. Ive been watching anime for about 2 months so I dont have a huge list yet. Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisan, and Death Note are all pretty good but they are like 2 tiers below AoT lol.

bradd_91

I started with One Piece and AOT was the only one that could keep my attention after that. Dragon Ball is fine for nostalgia, but the storytelling just doesn't come close. One Piece you have to accept it's very fight heavy, unlike AOT, so the story can take the backseat for significant portions.

xcywji45

Read Tokyo ghoul, youre gonna love it

donquixotesdick

Ye because most other manga are written by competent writers.

Desperate_Cream6902

I would recommend Bongou Stray dogs. I think it’s pretty interesting and you would probably be intrigue by dazai. I als would suggest you do watch or read Naruto as well as it does have highly emotional moments as well.

DeroZaza

Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, The Promised Neverland (only watch season 1), Vinland Saga, Gantz, Mirai Nikki, Akame Ga Kill, Black Butler, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Revengers, Monster, Elfen Lied, Rainbow, Soul Eater, Demon Slayer. Here are a few you can watch.

lazyssj

if you like historical political war fiction, give Vinland saga a shot. it’s setting during the viking era and it’s phenomenal for character development. and it’s approach to war and violence is almost an antithesis to AOT. i personally like it even more. Its in my top 2

TJ_the_Redditor

Try Death Note, I recently got hooked, and it's my second anime.

mr_nobody_21

Vinland saga

alliseeisbronze

Golden Kamuy: Different people (soldiers, serial killers, and hunters, etc) compete to get a map that leads to treasure. The catch: the map is tattooed on 24 different prisoners. Factions of people team up and betray each other. It’s hilarious, it’s violent, it’s sad as hell, and it pays respect to Ainu culture and the trauma of war. It’s my favorite anime of all time. Jujutsu Kaisen: A new-gen show that is about sorcerers fighting each other and fighting cursed spirits. It’s a battle anime, but it has iconic characters with great development so you’re invested in them. The fights and techniques are also really inventive and badass. I knew nothing about the manga but was hooked on episode 1. Haikyuu!!: I never expected to be so invested in an anime about a high school volleyball team. But here I am lol. It shows the youthful innocence of being a teenager, but it also captures the heavy emotions you feel after a bitter loss so well. I never played volleyball, but I actually got emotional during certain episodes because I became so invested in the characters. A crushing defeat, or a monumental victory when a character achieves a goal they’ve been chasing- you really get drawn into this little ragtag team of players, and I love it.

Upbeat_Cobra4753

Code Geass

[deleted]

Watch Code Geass. Most AOT fans also seem to like that. I would also reccommend Monster. It's a bit slower but it has one of the best antagonists and generally top tier character writing out of anything ive ever read/watched, and a non-edgy protagonist. Genuinely a top 5 manga/anime Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood also has amazing world building and storytelling. If you want an MC similar to eren, try vinland saga. It's also a seinein masterpiece

BakL346

Watch Mobile suit gundam 0079 and its UC continuation series. (Which are zeta, ZZ, Char counter attack, Unicorn, narrative, Hathaway flash, F91, Victory)

YT_AmbushAnime

Death note, Vinland saga, Haikyuu, there’s a lot of good ones out there.

Sweet-Molasses-3059

Vinland Saga and Re Zero are absolute masterpieces, you'll enjoy them
