Seasons 1-3 AOT often compared the struggles of the characters against the Titans or even against other people to the natural world, survival of the fittest. So these extinct and living animals could also represent that struggle humanity must fight against to survive.
Especially since right before this beast stampede shot there is a dozen-ish shots of animals attacking each other in predator/prey pairs, which also adds to this sort of visual representation.
*Kill or be killed. If you win you live. If you lose you die. You cannot win if you dont fight. So fight. Fight.*
Season 4 Spoiler;
>!Also the beast stampede looks like another sort of army of large creatures trampling the world in their path as they march across the land. You can even see the tiny people underneath their feet getting obliterated.!<
wow that really adds a lot more to the story. I can't believe I didn't notice any of this, I never paid enough attention to the openings I only really remembered this specific shot because of all of the animals with the beast titan
The great thing about the OPs and EDs in AoT is that if you are willing to look closely enough at them and slow them down you can catch a lot of stuff that is related to more than just the plot and action of the story. You can find themes, symbolism, philosophy and ideology that is referenced in the series itself either directly or indirectly. Sure some of the OPs have spoilers for that season/arc, but they aren't always as straight forward as we see them.
Sometimes they go as direct as S3P2's OP that is almost point for point a full recap of the plot of that arc. However sometimes they add in more subtle things that don't necessarily mean anything at face value, but that when you put it into the context of the story you realize its hinting at important things you hadn't even considered before.
S3P2 OP's for example has; >!A shot of the skeletal Colossal Titan fade out right as Armin's face fades in over the top of it with him waking up, followed by a shot of Erwin standing among the rest of the fallen Scouts' ghosts fading into the background. On their own these two things don't mean much, but when you add them to the context of Midnight Sun and the choice between giving the Colossal to Armin or Erwin it is suddenly a lot more clear what its saying.!<
oh damn that's really cool. I have been considering rewatching the show (even though i finished it pretty recently) so I can understand it better and notice extra details, so I'll definitely pay more attention to the openings and endings this time too seeing how much more they could add.
It didnt get mentioned in the anime. But in the manga the inheritor of the beast titan takes on AN animalistic trait. Like that thing that >!captured armin!< In the final battle that was a previous beast titan. Doesnt always have to be monkey.
I’m more than 100% sure it’s also mentioned in the anime.
People just don’t pay enough attention when watching television shows compared to reading books/comics.
The guy Zeke used to play baseball with mentions his Beast form is not that useful in battle and that’s why he prefers doing research. That’s how I figured the beast titan is not always an Ape
I don't know if I accept it's a previous beast Titan.
Two of them are dinosaurs! There's fucking whale in there! Was an inheritor a whale at some point? What a useless ability?
Plus, they don't look EXACTLY like the animal when they're the beast titan
yeah I'm somewhat skeptical of that theory too. but check out the comment left by the user Ghelric(?) and the replies, it seems like a pretty solid explanation
I miss the feeling of the mystery that I had when I saw this opening, I'm satisfied with the show and how it ended but I was really hoping for some Titan society like reveal .
Its an anime my dude, not everything has to male sense.
You see all kinds of unrelated stuff in anime openings that have nothing to do with the story of that anime but people will try to convince you it means something either ways. I also looked at this and thought the same thing, but didn't find anything official about that sequence in the opening and its meaning.
When this was still airing, I thought the beast was gonna summon a bunch of titan sized predator animals. I'm kinda disappointed that it didn't happen lol
I thought we would learn titan powers are a power we engineered into colonist on new planets and they weren't on earth. My theory on the animals and dinosaurs was, we took the genetic information from each animal and encoded it into the colonist. Pure titans are like a person in cryosleep as their organic robot body does whatever it's told, build walls, eat people, etc.

that's a pretty good theory

The okapi! I looked up pictures of actual okapis, it’s really cool how they convert it to a bipedal creature
That okapi scared the living crap out of me 😂
I wish we could’ve seen a trex beast titan
That shits bite force would break the sound barrier
ohh okay thank you for the answer, that makes sense now
I’m more than 100% sure it’s also mentioned in the anime. People just don’t pay enough attention when watching television shows compared to reading books/comics.
nono Its actually not you can only connect the dots of the previous And current beast
The guy Zeke used to play baseball with mentions his Beast form is not that useful in battle and that’s why he prefers doing research. That’s how I figured the beast titan is not always an Ape
My guess is that as a beast, you have to know we share this world.
i seen a very good theory or explanation about this that goes beyond it just being tied to the beast titan tho idk what it is
I remember reading somewhere that it represents that every beast has a heart
I don't know if I accept it's a previous beast Titan. Two of them are dinosaurs! There's fucking whale in there! Was an inheritor a whale at some point? What a useless ability? Plus, they don't look EXACTLY like the animal when they're the beast titan

Lol at a scene transform into a whale then got beached while fighting.
The whale titan could be useful in the navy
madagascar theory
Only Ymir knows.
Plesiosaur Titan with the ability to ask for tree fiddy from any and everybody.
Only ymir knows
I always found it very funny and stupid lol
I miss the feeling of the mystery that I had when I saw this opening, I'm satisfied with the show and how it ended but I was really hoping for some Titan society like reveal .
same that's what I thought too, it would've been so cool 😭
Because dinosaurs are fucking rad.
ok guys it’s my turn to ask this tomorrow
Judging by the question, it makes me believe you haven't watched the whole show. The answer is kind of a spoiler if you ask me.
I've seen the whole show but I just didn't connect the dots very well, but I've already gotten a few answers so I understand it now

OH LMAO I should've looked around first lmao
I thought it was because they're titans in the sense of being big/impactful.
Maybe previous beast titans chose dino's as their beast titan cuz falco isnt a monkey
I always thought they were past beast titans
Beast titan is kind of small if a hippo and a elephant are nearly as big as it.
Whale Titan sounds badass until you transform in the dessert

Previous beast titan's holders

Every single being in the history of the world has had to fight/dedicate their hearts for survival. Humans are no different
This makes a lot more sense than the beast titan summoning a bunch of beasts.
