There is a “restaurant” on the highway exit near my house that has
- various drink sizes
- free refills
- empty XL drink containers on the ground outside and in the trash cans
That means people pay for the larger container when they have access to unlimited drink, presumably to avoid having to *walk* all the way back to the drink machine twice.
Idk I can see it. If I’m sitting down and think I might want some to-go soda, then finish my meal (and soda) and feel satisfied and not want more. And since the difference is usually like 35¢ it’s just not something I’d think about
Wouldn't it normally come with a meal? So get 'large' size and you get more fries as well?
If not, yeah ordering a large in a place with free refills seems.... insane.
Nah you are spot on actually that is very true, although i have seen people come in and just buy a drink with no meal and still go large and sit in with friends hahaha. This is carls jr in ipswich so it is a fairly rare restaurant and maybe part of the appeal is the american diner setting
People are inherintly lazy.
Its easier to fill 1 cup than make 3 trips to fill a smaller cup multiple times.
Free refills aren't a thing where I am, but I would guess if they were majority of people would still buy thier usual size and not refill, or refill once as leaving the building for a take away drink
I do large drinks because I usually refill the cup before I leave and take it home and sip on it later. A large allows me to have more drink for later.
Idk, if it's 10 cents more and it means I don't have to get up during my meal, then I feel it's worth it.
I think this was also the logic behind when McDonald's made all their drink size $1.
Same. But also the diners (here in my city diner is a combination mexican/gyro/charbroiler) and Mexican joints I go to don't typically refill their Jamaica/Orange bang/horchata so the biggest whatever they have is the only right answer.
The XL drinks are to go or are part of a combo deal where you want large fries and the size of the drink doesn’t matter. Or people are lazy and stupid.
It’s also people that drink sodas while they are in the restaurant, then fill it up one last time “for the road”. They want to XL so they can drink even more on the ride home. I swear some people are downing like a half gallon of soda with a meal.
Cici’s pizza did this, although I haven’t been there in like a decade. I used to think it was so stupid that people were getting large glasses just so they wouldn’t have to get up, even though it’s a buffet…
I go to lunch with a guy often who doesn’t ever finish his food. Last week he got a large surprisingly and told me “I’m not going to eat the extra fries, I just need more to drink.”
My brain was like “………. I’m going to hold my criticism.”
Been to the one on the beach in Pacifica, ca and the one in midtown Manhattan.
There’s probably a lot more out there but all Taco Bell Cantinas have alcohol.
You can get served one bottle as well and in REALLY noble restaurants that is the only way. You will not have the bottle on your table, but someone will refill from the same bottle for you all the time and of course nobody else is getting some of that bottle.
I would say that’s not enlarging, enlarging is when you can get like 3 tiers of meal, chips and drinks get bigger and the main course usually also changes slightly
Pretty sure he's Canadian. Those are fast food places here. Only A&W is burgers though, rest is shawarmas or rice bowls, so don't really fit the "enlarge your meal" mold.
In the U.K. you have to offer smaller sizes of any alcoholic beverage as standard terms of licensing - if you only offer ‘large’ you are indirectly contributing to the encouragement of binge drinking.
Sonic has a standard size that they call 'Route 44' that holds 44 ounces of soda (or slush, if you need even more concentrated sugar). That is 1.3 liters, and it's considered a fairly mild indulgence.
In my european country you have to display the amount served so regdless of having one size or not, you will know the amount. And that is amazing.
Going to abroad to starbucks or a cafe and ordering a coffe only to get a shot of espresso sized cup with coffe is not okey. And its still full price.
Weird hill to die on. I’ve prepaid hundreds for dates to high end 7-10 course dining experiences with wine pairings, doesn’t exactly have that fast food feel
Similarly, all restaurants near me, which are most definitely not fast food, and all pubs I've been in, offer you a half glass or a pint glass for most soft drinks. For wine it's normal to offer a glass of wine, or a large glass of wine. I've never been in a restaurant that doesn't.
You reckon? In Denmark every single restaurant has sizes of drinks because its horrendously overpriced and is where they make their money.
Eg you pay 35 euro for the food and then 7-8-9 euro for a 250-500-750 ml respectively of soda
What? I guess small / med / large is a 'size' while half pint / pint / bottle is more of a quantity but it's a real weird place to draw the line.
Do you guys go to restaurants and just get given however much the place feels like giving you?
They generally only have one size of drink ( non alcoholic). You order a coke you get a glass of coke, you don't say small medium or large at most sit down restaurants.
So any place selling a pony, middy or pint of beer is a fast food restaurant. ‘I’ll have a wine please’, ‘yes sir, would you like a glass or a bottle ?’…. Fast food
I think for this to be mostly true you’d have to limit it to soft drink sizes. I’ve been to tons of non-fast-food restaurants that have differently sized beers on offer.
Drink size can be a consistent indicator of fast food restaurants, as it reflects characteristics of standardization, convenience, and speed of service.
What annoys me are restaurants that have some "endless" drinks, and some that you pay for every refill on, and no distinction between them. Oh, my soda has free refills. His lemonade doesn't. And you never know until you get the check.
Omg is this why A&W won't offer sizes of drinks or fries or anything?? That franchise is run by some pompous fucks if that's the case. Easily the most expensive of all the fast food in Canada too.
Not really. There are segments of the industry for "fast casual" or "counter service" and others that are more elevated that offer sizes.
Even quality places offer sizes, just look at ordering wine or many other things from a bar. That's not even counting the chain restaurants that offer sizes in their cocktails.
I mean
Does this matter? Are people going to refuse to eat a a restaurant that has drink sizes? Is fast food bad? If you get slow service at a fast food place is it a restaurant? If you get fast food at a restaurant is it not a restaurant? Is every restaurant a sit down restaurant if you can sit down? I get this is a shower thought but there's no binding here.
Me, high af at a Taco Bell: “can I have a taco and a small soda?”
The cashier: “we only have large and medium drinks.”
Me, still quite stoned: “but if there’s only two sizes, wouldn’t they just be ‘large’ and ‘small’ by default?”
Cashier, now highly annoyed: “Look, do you want it or not?”
Me: “……….yes please.”
Nah you're not crazy this post is pretentious lol. First restaurant I worked at had different sizes. It was a burger place but not fast food, like award-winning burgers, still the best burgers I've ever tasted
There is a “restaurant” on the highway exit near my house that has - various drink sizes - free refills - empty XL drink containers on the ground outside and in the trash cans That means people pay for the larger container when they have access to unlimited drink, presumably to avoid having to *walk* all the way back to the drink machine twice.
I will actually never understand getting a large when there is free refills unless you are doing takeaway lmao
Sometimes it's like $0.20 more and you get a bonus 12+ ounces for the road. That's literally cheaper than buying it at the grocery store.
You're missing the point that these people are throwing away or leaving the xl cups. Not taking them.
Idk I can see it. If I’m sitting down and think I might want some to-go soda, then finish my meal (and soda) and feel satisfied and not want more. And since the difference is usually like 35¢ it’s just not something I’d think about
Not in australia my bro 😭😭
Obviously because your drinks would spill if it's kept upside down
we are already big enough
Non-sugar variants are more common here than ever, friend.
Where in Australia do you get unlimited refills?
Hungry Jacks and Taco Bell off the top of my head.
[It's a real bargian at $1.59.](https://youtu.be/Ish8NBunrQU?si=WyrP7Lt-5gCtGiYX&t=50s)
And that’s why the world is fatter than ever lmao
That's the reason? Did you just solve obesity? Great.
"why walk for more unnecessary sugar when I can just take far more than I actually need?!"
This is carls jr in ipswich so it is a fairly rare restaurant and maybe part of the appeal is the american diner setting
>i have seen people come in and just buy a drink with no meal and still go large and sit in with friends hahaha People never cease to amaze me! haha
People are inherintly lazy. Its easier to fill 1 cup than make 3 trips to fill a smaller cup multiple times. Free refills aren't a thing where I am, but I would guess if they were majority of people would still buy thier usual size and not refill, or refill once as leaving the building for a take away drink
There are 11 Carl’s Jr. spots in a 100km radius of Brisbane City. It’s not McDonald’s, but I wouldn’t call it rare these days
If they're with friends, maybe they don't want to keep getting up and interrupting the conversation.
I usually drink a large with the meal then refill as I leave.
I do large drinks because I usually refill the cup before I leave and take it home and sip on it later. A large allows me to have more drink for later.
Exactly bro thats what im saying it makes sense for takeaway, its the people that eat in an chuck it when they leave i dont get
Because they want a large fry but don't want to or don't know you can get a large fry with a regular size drink at most places.
Got to get the diabetes somehow.
I guess it varies depending on where you are but where I live, the places that actually do free refills only do it for larges lol
That’s interesting, it’s only movie theaters that do that where I live.
Idk, if it's 10 cents more and it means I don't have to get up during my meal, then I feel it's worth it. I think this was also the logic behind when McDonald's made all their drink size $1.

Only twice?
Or habit. For example if they do a large amount of take out and get large so it lasts.
Why are you paying at all when there are free containers everywhere ;)
I go to lunch with a guy often who doesn’t ever finish his food. Last week he got a large surprisingly and told me “I’m not going to eat the extra fries, I just need more to drink.” My brain was like “………. I’m going to hold my criticism.”
If I ever get the large it’s because I want more fries, not the drink. I usually just fill it with water anyway.
I would gladly pay 20¢ to avoid getting up 3 times during my meal
How much soda you drinking?
Glass of wine vs bottle of wine is technically different sizes
How about pots, schooners, pints of beer?
It comes in pints? I'm getting one.
You’ve had a whole half already!
That fella's been doing nothing but stare at you since we arrived.
Baggins? *SURE* I know a Baggins! *Frodo* Baggins! He's my second cousin, once removed on his *mother's* side. . .
A Lord of the Rings reference! 😁
Hahahahaha, you dumb bastard. It's not a schooner, it's a sailboat.
I've literally never heard sailboat before in my life, and I can't tell if you're taking the piss or not.
It's from [this scene](https://youtu.be/sahnApE0I7c?si=aAmPJ5p56d-06n60) in the movie Mallrats
Lol okay. I've never seen mallrats so makes sense xD
Sounds like you've discovered your Sunday afternoon plans
I mean if you're doing Mallrats you may as well go down a view askewniverse rabbit hole, it's more than just a sunday afternoon
You have to start at the beginning, or like half of every movie afterwards won't be as funny.
Chronologically, *Mallrats* is the beginning
You know what! There is no Easter Bunny! That over there is a guy in a suit!
I don’t think alcoholic drinks are standard fast food options
Didn’t Taco Bell in California start serving booze a few years back? Or was it Vegas?
That’s a Taco Bell Cantina. Theres a few of them.
Sounds like Vegas
Been to the one on the beach in Pacifica, ca and the one in midtown Manhattan. There’s probably a lot more out there but all Taco Bell Cantinas have alcohol.
They've served alcohol in Chicago for awhile.
The serving size is ONE glass and is the only serving size. If you choose to have 4 of those that’s on you.
You can get served one bottle as well and in REALLY noble restaurants that is the only way. You will not have the bottle on your table, but someone will refill from the same bottle for you all the time and of course nobody else is getting some of that bottle.
You can get a small or a large glass of wine though
It's not uncommon to see wine served in two different glass sizes, 150mL (or 180) and 250mL.
but do you want a regular glass or a large glass of wine?
many bars here will ask if you want 4 cl or 6 cl alcohol in your drink
To be fair a bar and a restaurant is not the same
Supersize this cabsav, and I want extra tannins.
this post should be limited to different sizes of soda. alcohol is often sold in different sizes.
Pint vs half pint of beer
So is a pint and a midi.
I would say the ability to “enlarge” the meal is a greater indicator
When the burger is $15 and the fries cost extra, is that ordering a side or "enlarging" the meal?
I would say that’s not enlarging, enlarging is when you can get like 3 tiers of meal, chips and drinks get bigger and the main course usually also changes slightly
[удалено]
You’ve never been offered to make it a large for $0.75 more?
[удалено]
Did you just make up everything after A&W?
Pretty sure he's Canadian. Those are fast food places here. Only A&W is burgers though, rest is shawarmas or rice bowls, so don't really fit the "enlarge your meal" mold.
Pita Pit is real
In the U.K. you have to offer smaller sizes of any alcoholic beverage as standard terms of licensing - if you only offer ‘large’ you are indirectly contributing to the encouragement of binge drinking.
Conversely, beer is one the of things in the states that *does* actually have sizes in restaurants.
Pint of coke vs half pint of coke is a common option in many British restaurants
Half a litre of coke in one sitting?
Yeah. Pretty sure that's smaller than a US large at McDonald's
Smaller than a US Medium at BK/Subway/Wendy’s/KFC. McDonald’s has the smallest “large”
Isn’t a liter a large at most US places? That’s why the liters of cola thing was funny in Super Troopers back in the day.
I know right? I would need to order at least three times.
Sonic has a standard size that they call 'Route 44' that holds 44 ounces of soda (or slush, if you need even more concentrated sugar). That is 1.3 liters, and it's considered a fairly mild indulgence.
Buddy you should come check out the USA sometime
I don't want a large Farva, I want a goddamn half-liter-o-cola!
Not to mention beer
I thought they used the metric system
r/americanshowerthoughts
Disappointed this isn't an actual sub.
r/SubsIFellFor
r/SubsIwouldEat
Now it is
Clicked on it and it still isn't.
r/americanshowerthought
Ah, singular. Thanks!
why? this is true in my european country too
Not true in Germany. You get 2 drink sizes in almost every restaurant
And the UK
It germany it is not, you can decide the size of the drink in almost every restaurant.
In my european country you have to display the amount served so regdless of having one size or not, you will know the amount. And that is amazing. Going to abroad to starbucks or a cafe and ordering a coffe only to get a shot of espresso sized cup with coffe is not okey. And its still full price.
I feel like starbucks lists the volume of their drinks...
So many sizes of beers!
Other countries have fast food & drink sizes lmao
A lot of restaurants have different sized beers
The Thai food place I go to has different sizes for their Thai tea
Pay before you eat = fast food. I will die on this hill.
Weird hill to die on. I’ve prepaid hundreds for dates to high end 7-10 course dining experiences with wine pairings, doesn’t exactly have that fast food feel
Nope. Sorry. You ate fast food. I'm sorry you had to hear it this way.
yup i guess most michelin star restaurants are fast food
Doesn't subway only have 1 size? But they don't have a drive thru either, which would be my other litmus test.
Some Subways have drive thrus. https://www.marketingscoop.com/blog/does-subway-have-drive-thru/
Drive-thrus for Subway just seems unnatural.
There’s a McDonald’s in Germany that has a boat-thru
That's kinda badass
They have a nice touch screen where you pick your options. It's very convenient.
That’s the entire point of a subway!
All the subways I've been to have 2 sizes of fountain drinks, plus 20 oz. bottles.
Lots of Subways have Drive Thrus.
Subways don't exclusively have drive through (like many fast food chains), but they do exist.
I can order different sizes in any restaurant
I can order an M4 Sherman operated by Gary Busey and two hookers at my savings and loan. I probably won't get it.
You just need a more customer service oriented bank.
Do you have a newsletter perhaps? I'll vote for you. Lol.
bro… nah
No you can't
I can literally order 3dl or 5dl coke in any normal restaurant
I'm going to guess you're from Eastern Europe, the only place I've never been that actually labels drinks in dl.
Northern Europe does it as well.
Second this
I live in one of the German speaking countries, maybe "Western" Europe "does it" too?
not quite
Yes you can, you can order a glass, a jug, or a bottle
It's up to the restaurant what they offer, not you.
Yes, and every restaurant in Europe offers pretty much all drinks in various sizes. Mostly 0.3l and 0.5l for beer and soft drinks.
Similarly, all restaurants near me, which are most definitely not fast food, and all pubs I've been in, offer you a half glass or a pint glass for most soft drinks. For wine it's normal to offer a glass of wine, or a large glass of wine. I've never been in a restaurant that doesn't.
A bar and a restaurant are not the same thing.
My post related to restaurants, not bars. I even wrote that there for you to see in plain English.
Maybe in backwoods whereami Inthefuxville
one of the most famous restaurant in houston has drinks be either served in a glass or a jug
You reckon? In Denmark every single restaurant has sizes of drinks because its horrendously overpriced and is where they make their money. Eg you pay 35 euro for the food and then 7-8-9 euro for a 250-500-750 ml respectively of soda
Another couple indicators are paying for the meal before you get the food and no metal cutlery.
Also why anyone who is eating in with free refills would order anything but small is beyond comprehension.
When they have more than 2 it's fast food
Plenty of restaurants near me have three different sizes of drinks
What about cafes? They almost always have different coffee sizes
That statement was hard to read lol.
So any place selling a pony, middy or pint of beer is a fast food restaurant. ‘I’ll have a wine please’, ‘yes sir, would you like a glass or a bottle ?’…. Fast food
Thats plain wrong - A big beer and a small beer exist in places that don't even sell food.
Are there any fast food restaurants that sell alcohol? Not fast casual (Applebee’s/Chili’s/etc), but legit fast food places?
I'd like that more places have differents sizes for softs, I drink a lot and I'm very often with an empty glass/bottle.
Get a jug/glass of tap water too! Enjoy your soda but then every drink you have that's not a soda is also a win for your body 💪
I think for this to be mostly true you’d have to limit it to soft drink sizes. I’ve been to tons of non-fast-food restaurants that have differently sized beers on offer.
Question: Are buffets considered fast food? I mean, the food is already cooked and waiting when you walk in, how much faster can it get?
This has to be written by someone not of legal drinking age
Drink size can be a consistent indicator of fast food restaurants, as it reflects characteristics of standardization, convenience, and speed of service.
What annoys me are restaurants that have some "endless" drinks, and some that you pay for every refill on, and no distinction between them. Oh, my soda has free refills. His lemonade doesn't. And you never know until you get the check.
I mean, you can also just ask the server when they ask you if you want another one.
More than 2 sizes! I think a decent amount of restaurants have small and large soft drinks
Combo meals are more indicative
I'm just thinking about all of those fast food restaurants with wine lists with a price per glass and a price per bottle.
Aw, nuts! Somebody already made this comment.
I mean Does this matter? Are people going to refuse to eat a a restaurant that has drink sizes? Is fast food bad? If you get slow service at a fast food place is it a restaurant? If you get fast food at a restaurant is it not a restaurant? Is every restaurant a sit down restaurant if you can sit down? I get this is a shower thought but there's no binding here.
A drink without size is a drink that doesn't exist. In this universe, all drinks have sizes.
Me, high af at a Taco Bell: “can I have a taco and a small soda?” The cashier: “we only have large and medium drinks.” Me, still quite stoned: “but if there’s only two sizes, wouldn’t they just be ‘large’ and ‘small’ by default?” Cashier, now highly annoyed: “Look, do you want it or not?” Me: “……….yes please.”
Never been to a pub, have you?
What? I feel like lots of restaurants have sizes. Am I crazy?
Nah you're not crazy this post is pretentious lol. First restaurant I worked at had different sizes. It was a burger place but not fast food, like award-winning burgers, still the best burgers I've ever tasted
It’s like, a pretty generic way to appeal to kids and adults. Giving a kid a full glass of drink is just wasteful.
beers come in 16 or 20oz
Confirmed Movie Theatre = fast food
I've never been to a movie theater where they serve anything but fast food.
What the fuck is this bullshit?
That's... actually a really good point.
Sorry but you normally get at least a choice of small and large.
KFC gives you single size of drink that you can refill how many times you wish for free
What places *doesn't* have drink sizes, tf?
McDonald's originally only had one size of drink
Also applies to beer at a trashy place vs nice place. If that beer is 11% alcohol no one needs a 20 oz option
Fast food... or upscale brewery in my experience
No? Assuming you count "Pint", "Half-pint", "Shot", "Double", and "Small/Medium/Large wine glass" as sizes?
Buddy tried to order a drink outside of Wisconsin and the bartender didn't know what a double short was.
This sounds like a under-drinking age thought. Iborder different size beers everywhere I go cuz if you don't thebsupersize you off the break for tips
Sadly, it's also now a consistent indicator that it's a non-fast food restaurant if a single soft drink costs $4+.
unless it's the beer
Ordering at the counter is a sure fire way to tell if a restaurant is fast food.
