The twist is that it's the wrong question. Everyone thinks their job is the most important but there are dozens you could name without which the Silo would die. Power, water, food, doctors, IT to run the systems, Porters to move the stuff around. The jobs all have to be done or none of the rest matter. It's a carefully balanced ecosystem and removing any one element would be like pulling a block from a jenga tower. Ironically the only jobs whose loss wouldn't result in immediate catastrophe are the ones at the top. Judicial, the Mayor, the Sheriff. So again, like a jenga tower, the higher up you go the less critical to stability the blocks get.
And air recycling. There's never any mention of air being filtered from outside, so someone is working hard to keep the gas balance right and circulated. And no, before you say it, the "farm" levels are not enough to filter out all the CO2 and produce enough O2.
Pretty sure mechanical handles all of that. Like on a ship mechanical deals with the engine, with plumbing, with desalination, water levels, and more. Howey was a ship captain (yachts but they definitely had engines and plumbing and desalination). Mechanical deals with sewage recycling, generator and everything else you can think of. The silo is run like a ship and anyone who has had any experience sailing will say the same thing.
Yeah, the generator got face time because it needed major preventive maintenance.
But Mechanical had been running water and air processing so smoothly that no one even mentions it, which imo means they're doing a great job :D
Power and Water.
Without Power , nothing works, No artificial Lights for Photosynthesis. No airflow in a closed Bunker. No thermal regulation.
Also you need water for plant growing to make food. And also for the Humans.
So i would say, Most Basic things are Power and Water.
Why do people feel the need to make smug comments about having read the books? The question makes total sense and is open for debate in both the world of the books and the world of the show.
I don’t wanna spoil myself cause I saw some one say there actually is an answer. I don’t know it, but I kinda feel like it’s like the human body. It needs most jobs to function properly. Your Heart is really important, but it is not more necessary to live than your lungs or liver
Not the human body being the most important to the Silo. I believe they’re comparing the entirety of the Silo to the human body. For example, and not truly a direct comparison - Engineering is the muscles, medical the heart, Judicial the brain etc. Everything in the human body (ideally) works perfectly together to function, just like all the many roles in the Silo. To say the heart is more important than the brain or vice-versa would be silly.
This is a stupid question in the context of the silo and the context of any company. Everyone thinks their job is the most important but really for things to work both in the silo and in a private company everyone has to work together
This is a non-spoiler General Discussion thread.

And the light? They only have artificial light there. Or did you See any real Windows? No Photosynthesis No plants. ITs Not a field under the sun we talk about.

Great comparison! And certainly not just relevant to the Silo 👀
Will stick this comment to the CEO's windshield when he isnt looking
I know of one guy that's the CEO of like 5 or 6 companies. Can't be too important of a job if you can hold 5-6 jobs.
Film crew, otherwise we wouldn’t know anything about it.
Best answer :)
Author of the book. Without the content, no adaptation
IT 👀
Everybody thinks they have the most important job in the Silo and everyone looks down on the janitors.
Cleaner... oh.
Something the show never really covers. Water and sewer. And water recycling. It's as basic as power.
And air recycling. There's never any mention of air being filtered from outside, so someone is working hard to keep the gas balance right and circulated. And no, before you say it, the "farm" levels are not enough to filter out all the CO2 and produce enough O2.

That’s mechanical…
The writers. But they’re on strike
Porter. Hands down.

Recycling. They need to recoup all materials.

Fine. I’ll delete the comment.
Engineering obviously, they could not survive without power generation and hvac.
Mechanical, generator operations and maintenance. Power is the bottom line. Maybe that translates to Knox, head of Mechanical.
Whoever controls the door to the outside. Because they could accidentally let the bad stuff in and it would end it all.
That would be the Sheriff
Maintaining air and water quality. The most basic essentials for human life.

The penis of the silo is the most important.
Electricity
Golf instructor.

Farmer/Cook. Without the food they will all die.
Without Power and water the Farmer can plant No food.
Without power, farmers can still plant. They can get water from the deep well. 🤗
And the light? They only have artificial light there. Or did you See any real Windows? No Photosynthesis No plants. ITs Not a field under the sun we talk about.
Oh you’re right. We need power. ðŸ¤
Janitor
Either maintaining the generator or head of IT...or janitor.
Maintain the water level at the digger site of course
Janitor
Engineering. If the generator goes out, the entire silo goes out
I would say the mechanics, what would the IT do without power?
Honestly it’s GOT to be plumbing
The janitor
every single job. in a population of 10000, living in a constrained environment, all th jobs are gerared towards upkeep of the silo
