Like others said police would have to see you, but the problem is I have hardly seen anyone pulled over. Along with driving well under/over the speed limit and not using a blinker at all, the police don’t seem to care, until it’s a high speed chase.
Last I heard there are no specific red light cameras in Sioux Falls and I believe all of South Dakota (?) due to a judge ruling in 2010, therefore you won’t be ticketed
There are red light sensors on some intersections (below) but they dont have red light cameras to catch people who run them.
Sixth Street and Dakota Avenue,
12th Street and Kiwanis Avenue,
41st Street and Louise Avenue,
41st Street and Minnesota Avenue,
57th Street and Marion Road,
Kiwanis Avenue and Russell Street,
12th Street and Sertoma Avenue,
Maple Avenue and the southbound ramp of Interstate 29 (source: Argus leader article from 2019)
what’s the difference of a sensor and camera? The one i ran was the cliff and 271st and i drive by it a bunch and i saw camera looking things on it but it might have been sensors ifk
The sensors are little blue lights by the traffic lights. From what I understand they are there to “prove” that a light is red IF a cop catches you running a red light.
You can read about them in this article if you’re still interested :)

The blue lights are on the opposite side of the traffic light. They are there so that if a cop can't see the light itself, but the blue light on the back is on, that can serve as visual proof the light was red for you. Prior to this you could've argued that the light wasn't red yet, it was yellow, etc unless the cop was on the same side of the light as you
Edit: autocorrect failed it's job
The city also has cameras up on some lights to [show live feeds of popular intersections](https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/fbaac9e7423f41c7a5ebcdbace527e8c), and others throughout the state that simply monitor traffic flow and road conditons, etc.
As the story goes everyone agreed to not pay the tickets and iirc many challenged for them and ultimately made the camera cost more than it was making to operate.
Because our traffic laws are under the criminal chapter in our codified laws, we have the right to face our accuser. Which means a law enforcement officer has to observe all traffic violations so we can face them in court.
Iowa, in Sioux City for example have put most of their traffic laws, especially speeding, into their civil penalties laws so if you don't pay the tickets, they simply send it to a collections agency. That's how they're allowed to have speed cameras. So, you can't contest them in court. It's an illegal constitutional loophole that our SCOTUS has yet to accept hearing a case for.
Not all of them. I was driving through Sioux City on Saturday evening, stopped at Sam's for gas. The intersection at Sam's has a camera. Flashes were VERY bright as 2 cars blasted through the light.
None, against the state constitution I believe.
Guy didn't want to pay $86, ended up having the city refund almost $2M in ticket to people. Quite the day in court.
They didn't refund the tickets
They [were supposed to!](https://www.thenewspaper.com/news/18/1804.asp) The city must have fought repaying the tickets and won.
They refused to refund my $86, said go to court. Would have cost me more than that to get it back.
Mine was after 2007, they had a different vendor in Arizona at that time.
Ya he is a hero.
so if i ran one i wont revive a ticket?
Nope, police officer has to witness you do it in person. Even then I usually see them just let it go lol.
You will not. Your conscience is admirable, be well!
They are totally gonna kill someone.
Plenty of people have dash cams though. So, when you slam I to someone there will be record of it.
Dash cam has saved me on 3 occasions in Sioux Falls, proved its worth in the first accident.

Our state won’t even provide dmv information to other states who use red light cameras because we deemed it unconstitutional.

i belive what i saw is a sensor i just got my restricted a couple months ago so i was terrified to loose it thank you for your help

This is correct. So the cop can know if the light is red even if he can't see it. No sensors involved.

The cameras are for traffic monitoring and some of the lights are "smart" and will run longer or shorter depending on traffic conditions.
There used to be one downtown. It has been removed years ago.
As the story goes everyone agreed to not pay the tickets and iirc many challenged for them and ultimately made the camera cost more than it was making to operate.
I challenged mine. Because they called it a civil fine I had to go to arbitration instead of court. Guess which way their arbitrator ruled?

The way people run them it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't any. It's a double edged sword
None. With the number of red light runners though, something needs to change.
These are the only cameras I know of. [Sioux Falls Traffic Cameras](https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/fbaac9e7423f41c7a5ebcdbace527e8c)
Zero
You're good; even Sioux City removed them. Be safe!
