At the time, I worked as a Nursing Assistant and massage therapist, so it is pretty easy for me to be clinical about something like that. I actually have a much bigger issue with dental work causing anxiety.
for me, the first couple inches were okay, but when they found the first bend, it hurt really bad, so i was making whiny noises,
the nurse noticed, and they gave me more of the sedation, the rest went by without issue

i had mine mostly to see if i had additional issues when i suffered from bad gall colics. i've had a gallstone since i was twenty, and it gave me issues on and off, but had been quiet for a while.
the colics came back forcefully in my early 30ies (am 40 now), and this time, i had signs of infection. so they gave me a gastro- and colonoscopy to rule out everything else, and then went and took out my gallbladder.
things went smooth and i have little issues with it now :)
yeah, here in germany, you usually get put under (not general anaesthesia, but with sedatives so you sleep through it)
i honestly think it's the "normal" way here, i'm not entirely sure, but gastro- or colonoscopies are usually done with the patient asleep.

anaesthesia and sedation are a bit different, with "sleepy milk" (i think it's propofol or dormikum) you only fall asleep, but you still breathe on your own,
with anaesthesia / general anaesthesia, you have to be intubated since you stop breathing
XD it's... i think dormikum or propofol, it's a white liquid sedative, i had it a couple times for different things, and one time a nurse called it "sleepy milk" because it looks like milk
The biopsies don’t hurt as there are no nerve endings in the walls of the intestine. It’s just going round corners and they have to inflate you with gas as they go, which for some people gets super uncomfortable. Personally I thought it was alright. No worse than having a bit of a stomach upset.
My father in law who is 6'5 and 300lbs had a colonoscopy done in his senses. The procedure requires you to wait in the hospital for a defined time after recovery from sedation, and he didn't want to miss a football match so skipped it. God help the staff. Got the all clear anyway.
The prep is so much worse than the actual procedure imo

This last time I had a new prep kit. Was 2 bottles of this 8oz mix that you drink with tons of water. Not nearly as bad as the other prep kits and no real cramping or anything.....but it still sucked. Then after you have to fart out all that air they pumped into you while trying not to shart. Fun times
I think we had a similar prep kit because I had no cramping just the Hoover Dam out the other end.
I must have still be under for the farting gas because I don’t remember that at all but I do remember waking up in recovery with ginger ale.
Going out then coming back is wild too. Time just ceased.
I have to get one every year.
the trick is what you eat in the week beforehand.
I think they have given up on telling people because no one pays any attention.
I make a nice risotto and eat that for 4 days beforehand, 2 days before the procedure, you stop eating. that makes 'The Cleanse' so much easier.
and get a bidet attachment so you are not wiping you ass 600 times the night before.
and petroleum jelly on your butthole before you start pissing out your ass prevents the liquid burn.
it took me a few years to learn the tricks, but now a colonoscopy and 'The Prep' is a walk in the park.

I've found that making a fairly plain chicken and mushroom (skin removed) risotto for the dinner for the 4-5 days before, good old cornflakes for breakfast and white bread sandwhich for lunch gives me really good results. both in making The Purge easier and for having nothing left in the bowel to impede the doc for seeing what they need to see.
Do NOT try and sneak in foods that are not on the list and do NOT eat after you are supposed to stop.
that just wastes everyones time and the doctor won't be able to see anything and the procedure will need to be repeated

In an age where colon cancer is becoming more and more common in young people, it's really important to get these types of procedures done.
so many people don't because they fear the prep or are embarassed about having a doc down there (its their job! they studied for YEARS to be able to do it, they want to do it! LET THEM DO IT!) etc.
bowel cancer is very treatable when discovered early and absolutely lethal when found late.
people should not die due to some discomfort due to the prep or a bit of embarrassment.

he had an endoscopy, where they go in the other end, and they said that sedation was completely optional, and it was a 10 minute job, so just a bit of numbing stuff in the throat would do. He wasn't feeling like losing a whole day to coming round from sedation, so he said yeah, fine lets skip the sedative
He describes the following procedure as the combined most uncomfortable, painful and humiliating experience of his life. Other things have topped all three, but combined create 10 minutes of life that are just about as bad as 10 minutes can get.
Imagine getting waterboarded with your own spit while someone dispassionately shoves a metal tube down your throat.
Anyway, after the fact, because he was so stunned and appalled by the procedure, he let the staff know that in future, they probably shouldn't tell anyone that sedation is optional. I think quite loudly.

I had one done about a month and a half ago. I'm fairly young, so I wasn't getting it done as a precaution. Like you, they were checking for cancer, and I'd also never been put under before.
The prep does suck, but honestly, it's really not all that bad. Just be prepared to crap out every iota of moisture in your body. Solid, liquid, and everything in-between. You know that feeling of being really well hydrated and peeing clear water? Well, prepare yourself for that same experience, but out the back. Be sure to follow their diet instructions carefully, since you don't want to go through all of that only for them to say you're not cleaned out enough when you get there (which happened to my uncle once).
I was also nervous about the actual procedure, but let me tell you, when the anesthetist pushed the plunger on that syringe, the next thing I remember was waking up lol. I was out. I would have never even known someone had gone spelunking around my insides had that not been the reason I was there.
They go over the results with you right after, but if they find anything like a polyp, they'll have to send it to be tested, which can take a few weeks. I have to say, of everything else, that is the worst part: Waiting for the results. However, don't psych yourself out, and don't look anything up about it online. That will only make things worse (trust me), since everything you find online is always the worst case scenario. I don't know why you're getting the procedure, but if it's polyps, remember that most people develop polyps in their life, and the vast, VAST majority of them are non-cancerous. My polyp (the little piece of shit) was huge, bloody, and still turned out to be non-cancerous, even though it had like 3 or 4 qualities that made it more likely to be cancerous (according to Google).
The main thing to remember is that you won't know until you know. I wish I could say something that would make the waiting part suck less, but when has saying "just don't worry" ever caused someone to worry less. Just try to distract yourself, keep doing your day to day thing, and surround yourself with the good people in your life. And again: WebMD and Google are not your friends.

I had one done a few weeks ago. The prep is far worse than the procedure. I didn’t remember any thing and there was no pain or even any hint I even had the procedure done. Good luck, hope it all works out for you.
You obviously didn't get the new expensive prep kit. I had my 3rd procedure last year and went for the new prep kit and it's just 2 8oz bottles of this stuff you drink and follow with a bunch of water
I just got put under for a vasectomy and I was also really worried. The last time I was under was 20 years ago for my wisdom teeth.
Anyway, it really wasn't that bad. Gave me some gas and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room with a nurse saying my name. I felt fine afterwards, very little side effects.
That is crazy and very irresponsible of the surgeon.
General Anaesthetics carry significant risks. they should NEVER, EVER be used unless they are necessary.
Especially when a local anaesthetic will do the job.
That is malpractice levels of bad.

Nothing to worry about. Make sure you ask your doc for the new, more expensive prep kit (you'll thank me later). Instead of having to drink loads of nasty garbage and laxatives etc.....you drink 2 8oz bottles of this stuff and water.....no cramping. Trust me bro

Easiest thing I've been put under for, for sure. Other than the foul tasting cherry shit i had to chug. Yacked a couple times from it. Heard the shit they give you tastes better now though, as mine was a decade ago. You go to sleep and wake up and you're high as hell and feel fine. Butthole definitely felt a little weird, but maybe that was just me imagining things. No pain. If you don't wake up, you won't know regardless, but super fucking unlikely.
So did she forget the part where they made her drink a gallon of godawful juice that makes her shit herself half to death all night before, or is she just a real sadist?
When I was in medic school I had to observe this procedure once. They give you an amnesic med on top of a pain med. So you are pretty much completely awake you just don't remember it. You have to turn and stuff during the exam. The patient was this huge guy and he kept telling us how much he loved it and wished he had done it sooner the entire time. Then I had to keep taking his vitals afterwards while he was with his wife wondering if this was a known thing or something we were only privi to.

Nope I didn’t get a fancy prep kit. They told me to take 4 dulcolax and I drank a bottle of Miralax. Super fun lol.
How does it taste? When I had it done, it was the most foul tasting substance. I've heard it's much better now.

The surgeon was like "neither one of us are having a good time, so I'd like to do a general" - seemed fair to me.
That’s wild. My doc gave me local and we talked about fishing, camping, and road trips the whole time. Then I drove home.

When I was in medic school I had to observe this procedure once. They give you an amnesic med on top of a pain med. So you are pretty much completely awake you just don't remember it. You have to turn and stuff during the exam. The patient was this huge guy and he kept telling us how much he loved it and wished he had done it sooner the entire time. Then I had to keep taking his vitals afterwards while he was with his wife wondering if this was a known thing or something we were only privi to.
