Just to note, niacinamide will not get rid of sebaceous filaments, just reduce their prominence. You also definitely do not want to attempt to remove these by hand or tool.
I’ve got tons of those and yet my skin is incredibly dry… guess they didn’t get the memo 💀Thanks for replying! I’ll leave them alone for sure; definitely need whatever oil they’ll manage to make.
Bacteria under your fingernails and carried from unclean tools/tools that just touched other face-juices can easily get into your skin through popped acne and the craters these filaments are in (pores probably, but I'm not a doc.) You can get a skin yeast infection too, check out tinea versicolor, I had it for like 10 years without even knowing it. Other than just damaging your skin, potential scaring. Ive found that all the sebacious filaments that I relgiously empty over the years produce more and quicker. The hole they sit in also enlarges, and you can see them from further away. As a chronic picker.....my best advice is to never pick XD
Yeah!! Also, ive heard that folks with oily skin tend to have healthier, fuller, and less wrinkly skin as they get older! No idea how true it is, but I just choose to believe it because it makes me feel better abt being a little greasy lol
True enough I think, not that I'd yet count myself old (33), but I did a skin analysis 3 years ago or something and they said I have way less wrinkling than the average 30 years old female, so maybe yes.
I have one wrinkle I can see in the mirror. I've seen worse for sure. On the other hand I still have acne on my chin worse than I did as a teenager so....
Wonder when that's gonna change. Maybe I'll have the healthiest glowiest skin when I'm 50 or something for it. We'll see.
I had my 20th hs reunion last year and the ones of us who were always greasy faced looked significantly younger than others, especially if there hasn’t been much sun exposure
You need salicylic acid, an oil-soluble chemical exfoliant and a type of a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which helps loosen both oils and dead skin to effectively unclog pores.
Those are sebaceous filaments, and as the others said, Niacinamide is probably the best thing to get rid of them, there are many products with niacinamide as an ingredient in the list, but I suggest looking for a serum with it.
Also, a high concentration of niacinamide can irritate your skin (this happens to me), but really lower doses don't make noticeable changes.
10% can be too much for some type of skin (sensitive for example) a good percentage is between 2-5%. I personally use a lightweight cream with 4% of niacinamide and works amazing and I never had a breakout (I have sensitive, acne prone and dehydrated skin 😊)
10% is professional strength. Anything higher is made to mix into chemical peels done in a clinical environment. Thats why with a lot of people, the higher the niacinamide the more irritation. Around 3-5% is an optimal dose for starters.
I use the ordinary 10% and those damn things are still on my nose 😔 maybe a little lighter but still there. It was nice discovering they aren’t black heads I guess
Have you tried double cleansing? Try using an oil-based cleanser, like cleansing oil or a balm, followed by your regular cleanser. Rubbing the oil in your nose can remove the sebaceous filaments, and the double cleanse can improve your skin in general because it's good for removing makeup and sunscreen. Niacinamide will also help by preventing them from reappearing.
To some extent we’re just stuck with them, but i think consistency in whatever routine we end up with is key. I’ve also noticed (i think) that my pores are less noticeable when I’m well hydrated
Niacinamide helps by reducing the production of sebum which results in smaller sebaceous filaments. It definitely does not get rid of them, regardless of concentration. It is good for maintenance though. The only real solution is massaging the area with an oil cleanser. Because it is an oil cleanser, it dissolves the sebum just enough to make the filaments pop out of the pores when massaging. Doing this regularly will get one rid of them.
No need to wash your face after, if you are using a moisturizer and sunscreen, put it before them. You can use it daily but i strongly recommend checking the list ingredients of your products, like i said, many products cointains niacinamide, so you could end up applying more than what you need.
This should be higher. Nothing works like oil cleansing. But make sure you use an actual oil cleanser and not 2 year old coconut oil from your kitchen. I've seen too many posts about bad acne from oil cleansing but they are always using food oil.
I've had good results with elf brand one and Neutrogena, but the elf brand one feels nicer. You don't really need to break the bank for this. It's very basic and you don't need any signature ingredients for this.
Biossance cleansing oil and DHC oil cleansers are both outstanding! Work them in for about 5 minutes gently massaging then add a small amount of water to your hands and massage some more and the oil will change to a milky texture then splash your face with warm water to remove and pat dry. You can follow this up with a regular gentle cleanser (cerave hydrating, cetaphil). Hydrating cleansers help to break down these blackheads more than anything that’s drying because it softens them and allows the surface dirt and skin to be carried away and rinsed off.
My absolute favored is Mara but it’s $58. Tatcha’s is decent. I massage into my dry skin for about 10 minutes. After a while little sebum plugs (balls) start to come out. Mara’s exfoliates with enzymes I believe. I wish it was cheaper!!!
You can make your own mix of oil cleanser as well. I read an article about it years ago and from it i understood that castor oil + jojoba oil + rosehip oil was the perfect combination for me. I purchased them, would use them in the evening. The most important steps are to open up your pores with a warm towel before using the oil mix and massage your face with it for 10 minutes. Then, this step is absolutely crucial, you have to wipe off the oil mix again with a warm towel. Put it on your face for a few seconds (it feels amazing) and once it cools, wipe off the oil. I’ve never had better skin than when i did this. I literally could see on my hands the sebacious filament that slid off my skin lol. You don’t necessarily have to double cleanse; i just did the rest of my routine & added even more jojoba oil on my face before sleeping. That + a few layers of toner & moisturizer is what gave me amazing glass skin.
Yes everyday! To warm it i either "steamed" it or i wet it a little and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds! I do not use this method anymore because unfortunately im struggling financially and i do not have the money anymore to buy the oils (though they arent expensive). If i had the money, i’d definitely still be doing it! It didnt break me out at all despite me having acne-prone skin.
Agreed. I use stridex pads (the red container, rip the pads in half because there's plenty on half for your whole face) and jojoba oil, I have no problems with blackheads or SFs now. They come back of course, but they're so easy to get rid of.
What about salicylic acid? I've heard many people recommend that instead. Do they do similar things, can they be used together, or is one better than the other?
i use niacinamide every day and salicylic acid once a week, it helps a lot, doing clay masks or wash with enzyme powder also helps if there is any build up.
I JUST got salicylic acid and used it today for the first time for the same reason OP posted.
It def helped but not the results I was hoping for. I’m glad I got a travel size of it to try out instead of the full size bottle - I personally will be trying the other options like niacinamide to try.
Just be aware that SA and niacinamide do different things, and they aren’t a 1 for 1 swap; you can do both, including semi-regular SA washing (few times a week, up to daily) with a topical on top. Just make sure you aren’t maxing out your skin my doing too much all the time.
Upvote because a lot of the other answers don’t mention this. It inherently implies this can be “fixed.” It’s just pores :) OP your skin is very nice be thankful :-)
It can be fixed, the commenter you replied to just doesn't know how (massaging areas a few minutes with an oil cleanser). OP does not want to get rid of the pores, OP wants to get rid of the gunk inside the pores. It's not that deep
It's quite normal and treating it is an endless cycle of money wasted on pore cleaning products. Salicylic acid from the ordinary or retinol can help clear up the nose pores. The darkening is usually from oxidised sebum or excess oil in the pores mixed with dirt or dead skin cells.
This is normal and everyone has them. Oil cleansing and washing your face for 1+ minute will make them less prominent.
Ingredient wise, Niacinamide did nothing for me, but madecassoside did!
I use toner pads as a mask before the rest of my skincare. It really helps. That, and thorough cleansing
They are sebaceous filaments. Use salicylic acid, a BHA that exfoliates at the pore lining to decongest. The Ordinary Salicylic acid masque or salicylic solution 2% are both very effective, use the masque if you are more sensitive skinned as you wash it off after 10 mins. The solution stays on the skin. Wear SPF daily :)
Have you tried oil cleansing? Oil cleansing after using an exfoliant like SA helps me a ton. Especially if I have time to massage the oil cleanser in. I end up with a ton of little tiny hard white and flesh-toned bits of sebum sitting on my face by the end, ready to be rinsed away.
I used to use cleansing oil to remove makeup, but I didn't spend a long time rubbing my nose with it, I might give the oil cleansing method a try, thanks!
I really like the Hadalabo Gokujun Oil Cleanse. I get it from Stylevana for $7-$8 a bottle, which is necessary because I go through a lot. Prior to that o was using the SKIN1004 - Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil, which is closer to $12. I loved it, but for me those two are identical.
In the past I used Tatcha One-Step Camellia Cleansing Oil which is luxe as all hell and works well, but was $50 for a few ounces.
For Niacinamide I tried for between 2-3 weeks but couldn't do any longer as it was giving me a lot of cystic acne. For salicylic acid I have it used for years, not for the sebaceous filaments but for acne prevention.
I have suffered with this for years, saw a TikTok about putting La Roche Posay cicaplast b5 cream on it, worked almost immediately, don’t understand the science behind it but I won’t go to be without it now. Just a small amount on the nose!
My tried and true method is
1) hot shower/steam face
2) oil cleanse the area for 3mins minimum
3) use the Kate Somerville EradiKate blemish treatment (the pink stuff you dot in your face) and cover your nose with it. The sulphur just cleans everything out.
I do this like 2x a month
As other have said, these are completely normal BUT I had some pretty prominent ones that faded quite drastically once I started using Paula's Choice BHA liquid exfoliant(literally within 3 days). I think its one of the first porducts make an actual visual difference for me.
I use it twice a day, after cleansing and before serum/moisturizer. I just put about 4 drops into the palm of my hands and fingertips and just lightly dab it on my face, slowly working it in. I haven't found that it stings at all, though, so do be careful!😟
Sebaceous filaments are normal and you don't need to get rid of them. Unlike blackheads or acne, this is not a bad sign, just a feature humans have. I can see people gave you some nice advice, so this is just to explain that you don't have to fight this if you don't feel the need to do it.
Agreeing with a lot of posts here. First off, this happens to many, many people -- so don't feel alone.
I'd try this order, from basic (and inexpensive) to more involved and expensive.
1. Salicylic acid. No need to spend a lot. A spot treatment product is fine. Be patient. Use a very gentle face wash. The salicylic acid exfoliates, so I don't think you need to scrub hard -- I worry you might only push the sebum into the pores harder and create clogs. (for the same reason, I wouldn't squeeze them). ***This really should work if you give it time.***
2. If salicylic doesn't work after a couple months (I'd give it at least 2 months) then you can try AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acid, or glycolic acid). These aren't really better than salicylic acid, just a little different.
3. If the AHAs or glycolic doesn't work (again, try for 2 months) try a retinol product. And if that doesn't work (again, 2 months) you might go to a derm for something stronger (like prescription-grade retinoid).
Important note: everything above can increase sun sensitivity to the area applied -- so you might get an SPF designed to not clog pores (some are marketed for acne), or wear a hat, etc. We don't want your nose to get burned! :)
Double cleanse very thoroughly in small circles all over them for several minutes in both directions every night, then use a hydrating serum on damp skin, moisturizer on that. Wait for it to dry a little then lock all that moisture in around the nose with La Roche Posay ciciplast baum patting into the skin. Do this ever since night and wear spf every day outside.
Pore oil!!! I use Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil which is really gentle. Every few days I use it on a clean face, gently rub for 2 minutes or so and they’re all gone!
I see most people already came with good tips with using niacinamide, salicylic acid and oil cleansing, but what really helped minimize the look of these filaments on my nose was the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5! It fills the holes to make them smooth and less visible! They are hardly noticable now.
People say they shouldn’t do it, but I just gently squeeze mine out. I’ve had zero issues doing so and look a lot cleaner for it. Not for everyone, but I have done it my whole life and never had an issue
This is me. I swear taking my usual shower, exfoliate, gentle extraction for those i can see are plugged, moisturize rinse and repeat. eventually it turns from a large brown dot to normal skin with a pore! Granted I do have acne scars from before I learned to not just scrape/rip my skin off to get to them so I'm not motivated to not extract them myself LOL
I know it may not be the most helpful answer right away, but if you have access to doctors, try to get to a dermatologist. If they refuse, make them notate it down, tell them you're fine with a waiting list.
The reason I say that is because I fought all kinds of bad skin issues in combination with dermatillomania, a skin picking behavioral disorder, for well over 15 years. I tried all kinds of combinations of every product I've seen in the comments, and nothing really solved any problems; tho some things helped a bit. After 10 years trying to see a dermatologist, I finally got one because of unrelated skin discoloration. And my Derma Doc was IMEDIATLY mad at me for not seeing her earlier because I had a BUNCH of things going on. Including a yeast infection on my skin 🙃 that I later found out I had had for 10+ years. She prescribed me a medication shampoo/bodywash and my skin has NEVER felt better.
Now, sebaceous filaments, I won't pretend I'm a doc and know EXACTLY what they are, but as far as I understand, it's sebum. Made up of skin oil, sheded skin cells, and sometimes dirt on the surface. This generally means you sit on the oiler side of the scale, and so targeting that oil will help reduce the filaments. You don't want to express them, that's how you get (yeast) infections. I've been using a face and body wash called Sebamed and it's honestly been wonderful, it's not overly drying but absolutely reduces these types of build ups. Whatever you decide to try, make sure you switch 1 product at a time and use it consistently for like 4-6 weeks to be able to truly see a difference! A lot of products work within layers of the skin so you have to give it time to work! (There's some science to that last statement, I don't remember it enough to describe it better. Something to do with regeneration periods or something?)
These seem like you would need to exfoliate them but not going to lie i think moisturizing goes a longer way. Try cicaplast only on your nose where you have that (not the rest of ur face)
sebaceous filaments. I love to go onto YouTube and look up videos of sebaceous filament removal/white head removal lol. Most doctors seem to recommend hitting it up with some gentle exfoliating acid once a week, like niacinamide.
I haven't used it on my face but I get them on my chest.. using Bio Oil helps me a lot. Something about the oil in the product decreases the skins need to produce it?
Would the black strips pull them out, I don’t remember what they are called but I used them a couple of times and it looked like a cactus when I pulled it off
Not really a recommendation, but accutane got rid of these entirely for me. The process was amazing too as they slowly started to be pushed out and it was so satisfying to remove
For me, Hydra facial removed them all (no cleanser or face mask or serum I’ve tried was as effective as this). Unfortunately they came back a few days later and still, nothing over the counter I used will get rid of them.
Egg white mask using bamboo toilet paper / paper towels as a paper machet, let it dry ALL THE WAY then peel off, can take practice to get the paper machet right ,,, but it pulls em out🤝
I have those too. I got a facial, and she did a bunch of extractions on my nose which helped. She told me I should be using my BHA by Paula’s choice every day and it’s helped me a lot. They look much smaller now and I’ve also started using glycolic pads in the morning.
I’ve started using a sulphur cleanser. The brand AcneFree on Amazon is affordable and has lemon oil to help the smell. Using a few times a week has made a huge difference.
You're not gonna get rid of them but sometimes being able to really feel the built uo dirt gets to me so I'll use a Mighty Patch nose strip and that makes it fine. They're still gonna visible but less, I do it every week or 2
I started with an Oil cleanser (anua) on dry skin, wash off, then a regular cleanser and it clears it up! Of course end with your normal routine but using those 2 has helped so much. My skin is smoothe and it’s clearer.
Mint julep mask. It comes in a rube and goes on as a cream. Let it dry and wipe it off with a warm wet cloth. It's cheap and it works, it's what I use and I had the same problem. Good luck
So, I decided to give that Aprilskin thing a try after seeing it all over instagram, since I am a super fan of Korean skincare. And it surprisingly is working well for me. I combined it with ginseng essence water and the niacinamide/propolis serum, and my nose looks pretty great!
I have the same and made it worse by squeezing and tweezing out the gunk. This routine has helped keep my pores smaller and Im seeing improvements:
4x a week
Night: oil based cleanser followed by water based cleanser. Then retinol cream followed by a moisturizer.
Morning: gentle water based cleanser followed with sunscreen that has niacinamide
Girl, I also have that before. What I did were:
- I do double cleansing (oil-based cleanser & water-based cleanser)
- I use serum w/ niacinamide
- glycolic acid toner
So far so good… it’s really good to invest in ur skin.
In new to this sub. Is sebaceous filaments another word for blackheads? Because as a newbie I saw this and was like just push your nose up and those bad boys will pop right out.
Also please don’t downvote me I really am new here. You’d know that if you just looked at my skin.
I wanna throw in sulfur soap since that's what's working for me. I've been using salicylic acid and niacinamide for a while and it really helps evening everything out but never helped with the darkness of the pores. Neither did oil cleansing and hydrocolloid patches. But sulfur soap, while of course not perfect, has helped A LOT.
I use a sulphur soap bar by Revitale but I'm sure there's others out there. I lather up my face, leave it on for half a minute, then rinse off and go in with another cleanser to get rid of the smell
Definitely sebaceous filaments. On top of using exfoliating acids like AHA/BHA, double cleansing with an oil cleanser first will do a LOT. I like the Dermalogica Precleanse and the One Love Organics B Enzyme Cleansing Oil. Double cleanse daily, but once a week you want to massage the nose area for at LEAST 5 minutes, no more than 10. Oil wants to stick to oil, so it will draw out the oil/SB’s from the nose and you’ll start to even feel them come out because you’ll feel that grittiness as you keep massaging. Rinse, and see how smooth and cleared out your nose is!
I learnt that all of these acids do not work for me.. i realised they were more prominent for me when I was over washing my face I.e: washing (with cleanser) 2 times a day.. I now use a gentle foaming cleanser at night and just water in the morning!
they’re most likely blackheads, aka dirt, sebum, and old skin clogging up your pores. always be sure to clean off old product (even in skincare with zero makeup, never just apply another layer, still cleanse your face). i’m gonna guess you’re a teenager still so it’s also more common to get them with breakout-prone skin. just always cleanse and exfoliate 1-2 times a week, avoid touching your face as much as possible, including with your cellphone. if it doesn’t clear up you can consider consulting a derm for more targeted treatment and to see if they’re actually sebaceous filaments. just don’t pick, don’t automatically assume they’re not just blackheads & jump on immediate harsh products like most comments are suggesting without knowing for sure, and welcome to having skin!! xD
Gylcolic acid and niacinamide should fix this, but if you can't get them mine usually goes away when I rub them with a cotton pad soaked in my cleanser or a face oil
I've found some nice products on line for skin care, creams, masks, and even a kind of "black spots remover"... Now they're offering 10%off on the whole store
Most of them will be there to stay and they're called sebaceous filaments as most commenters have said. These are different from blackheads and you can damage your skin by trying to extract them. If you use a super zoomed in mirror you might be able to see the difference, but be careful especially around the nose with trying to extract. If your skin is generally clear, your nose is probably fine.
Personally I found exfoliating either with a face scrubber or chemically (not every day, once or twice a week) and witch hazel toner helped immensely. If you need more than that the other comments are probably more in line with what you need 💗
A salicylic acid face wash is a must. Cerave has a really good one with 2% Salicylic acid. I like the one for sensitive skin. The SA goes into your pores and removes the oil and dirt. Let it sit on the skin for about a minute before you rinse it off. If your skin is dry, use a hydrating toner such as Pyunkang Yul (my favorite and on sale right now on Amazon) or Anua 77% Heart Leaf toner. I say ditto on the Niacinamide serum. I use Axys-Y, I have sensitive skin and never had a problem with it. And you definitely want an exfoliador. The ordinary has some pretty good ones, but if you’re just starting, go with the lactic acid one, which is the mildest. Later on you can upgrade to the stronger BHA AHA one. Oh, double cleanse as well, cleaning with an oil first, then with the face wash. I really like Grapeseed oil or jojoba oil for this. The grapeseed oil is astringent so it helps tighten those pores, and it’s dirt cheap. I get the Now Foods brand on Amazon for $2-$3, I punch a hole in the seal instead of removing it, that way is easier to control flow. 3-4 drops is all you need so it lasts forever. Jojoba oil is a lot more expense. Remember, consistency is key. Don’t expect to see results overnight, it takes some time and continuous use. Hope that helps.
Don't post much, but this really resonates. I've had identical skin (44y) my whole life. Got teased in school for it. Discovered Purity Pore Minimizing Serum last year, and it changed my skin! Hands down, it's the only thing that works for me. It is pricey, but I'll continue to use it as long as I can afford it.

April Skin has a cleansing balm (Carrotene Hydromelt cleansing balm) that is great at removing/reducing them. The balm is $26 for 3.4oz on the brand’s website. I think Amazon also carries it.
DR BERG IS GOD - don't believe his recommendations work? try one - its free.... hes changed my life more than any doctor and Ive been to many

I’ve had sebaceous filaments covering my nose for most of my life and only in recent years learned what to call them. They’re mostly gone now, so long as I regularly use retinol and salicylic acid (not at the same time), plus an occasional massage with rosehip oil before washing my face with a face brush and hydrating cleanser.
Everyone’s trying to sound all technical here, these are clogged pores. “Cleaning out” the pores and then treating with some of these treatments can help minimize the pores. But they will fill back up, it’s just something you have to deal with for oily or combination skin unfortunately. Exfoliating a couple of times a week and maintaining a good skincare routine overall will be your best bet to maintain healthy looking skin.
Getting a facial will also help so much with clearing them, they’re usually recommended monthly to keep them clear.
Hey, I get those two their little blackheads the best I would recommend is going to target or Walgreens and getting one of those nose strips to help peel out the blackheads
I have suffered with this for years, saw a TikTok about putting La Roche Posay cicaplast b5 cream on it, worked almost immediately, don’t understand the science behind it but I won’t go to be without it now. Just a small amount on the nose!
Sebaceous filaments. Try glycolic acid plus niacinamide for them
Just to note, niacinamide will not get rid of sebaceous filaments, just reduce their prominence. You also definitely do not want to attempt to remove these by hand or tool.
Regarding your last sentence, why not?
They help produce and regulate skin oils, so they’re necessary for healthy skin. They’re also pretty easy to damage.
Ooof so much you said here resonates with me… I’ll stop seeing them as something bad then. Thanks for informing me of this!
Yeah!! Also, ive heard that folks with oily skin tend to have healthier, fuller, and less wrinkly skin as they get older! No idea how true it is, but I just choose to believe it because it makes me feel better abt being a little greasy lol
Omg that’s exciting to hear!! Happy for you, stranger! Embrace the greasiness today for a wrinkle-free tomorrow yup yup 😌
It’s also very easy to burst capillaries doing this, they do not heal.
Yikes… noted. Thanks for replying!
Yep. Learned this the hard way in my thirties after years of squeezing out “blackheads.”
You need salicylic acid, an oil-soluble chemical exfoliant and a type of a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which helps loosen both oils and dead skin to effectively unclog pores.
Product recommendations?
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
The Ordinary has really good ones too and are more affordable.
Agree with you.
Those are sebaceous filaments, and as the others said, Niacinamide is probably the best thing to get rid of them, there are many products with niacinamide as an ingredient in the list, but I suggest looking for a serum with it. Also, a high concentration of niacinamide can irritate your skin (this happens to me), but really lower doses don't make noticeable changes.
what is considered a *good* dosage? and what would be too much/too less??
10% can be too much for some type of skin (sensitive for example) a good percentage is between 2-5%. I personally use a lightweight cream with 4% of niacinamide and works amazing and I never had a breakout (I have sensitive, acne prone and dehydrated skin 😊)
amazing! thank you!!! 🫶🏼
10% is professional strength. Anything higher is made to mix into chemical peels done in a clinical environment. Thats why with a lot of people, the higher the niacinamide the more irritation. Around 3-5% is an optimal dose for starters.
Studies show that it's effective at 5% or more
I would say 5% or less, I tried with The Ordinary serum with 10% but that was too much for my skin.
Do you have any serums you could reccommend?
Niacinamide helps by reducing the production of sebum which results in smaller sebaceous filaments. It definitely does not get rid of them, regardless of concentration. It is good for maintenance though. The only real solution is massaging the area with an oil cleanser. Because it is an oil cleanser, it dissolves the sebum just enough to make the filaments pop out of the pores when massaging. Doing this regularly will get one rid of them.
Mine won't pop out but after double cleansing but extraction is much easier after washing
I bought serum at 10% Nia. How often should I use it and do I need to wash my face after?
No need to wash your face after, if you are using a moisturizer and sunscreen, put it before them. You can use it daily but i strongly recommend checking the list ingredients of your products, like i said, many products cointains niacinamide, so you could end up applying more than what you need.
Do you have a recommended niacinamide serum?
The only thing that helped me with the same thing was oil cleansing regularly and salicylic acid 1-2x week
This should be higher. Nothing works like oil cleansing. But make sure you use an actual oil cleanser and not 2 year old coconut oil from your kitchen. I've seen too many posts about bad acne from oil cleansing but they are always using food oil.
Any oil cleaner recommendations??
Kose softymo oil or dhc cleansing oil are my favorites. I also heard cleansing balms are great.
Love the softymo cleansing oil. It did not break me out
I've had good results with elf brand one and Neutrogena, but the elf brand one feels nicer. You don't really need to break the bank for this. It's very basic and you don't need any signature ingredients for this.
Anua Pore Control oil cleanser worked wonders for me (I have combo skin)
DHC brand is my favorite
Ma:nyo pure cleansing oil has worked wonders for me. You can find it for example on olive young right now on sale for $22
Also important with oil cleansing is to massage the area for 2-3 minutes. You need to do this to actually get them out. I also double cleanse!
Oil cleansing helped me the most also
The 50 shades of snail method also works great!
Did you do this every day? How did you warm the towel? Do you still use this method?
Yes everyday! To warm it i either "steamed" it or i wet it a little and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds! I do not use this method anymore because unfortunately im struggling financially and i do not have the money anymore to buy the oils (though they arent expensive). If i had the money, i’d definitely still be doing it! It didnt break me out at all despite me having acne-prone skin.
This should be the top comment, there is so much misleading information about this topic.
Agreed. I use stridex pads (the red container, rip the pads in half because there's plenty on half for your whole face) and jojoba oil, I have no problems with blackheads or SFs now. They come back of course, but they're so easy to get rid of.
You can’t get rid of these but nicinamide will help minimize them
What about salicylic acid? I've heard many people recommend that instead. Do they do similar things, can they be used together, or is one better than the other?
i use niacinamide every day and salicylic acid once a week, it helps a lot, doing clay masks or wash with enzyme powder also helps if there is any build up.
Yes, SA often helps a bit.
Can you recommend something with madecassoside? I’ve never heard of that
mediheal madecassoside toner pads
They are sebaceous filaments. Use salicylic acid, a BHA that exfoliates at the pore lining to decongest. The Ordinary Salicylic acid masque or salicylic solution 2% are both very effective, use the masque if you are more sensitive skinned as you wash it off after 10 mins. The solution stays on the skin. Wear SPF daily :)
I have these but unfortunately niacinamide didn't do anything for them. Salicylic acid didn't help either! Need a magical solution 😭
What kind do you use please
I really like the Hadalabo Gokujun Oil Cleanse. I get it from Stylevana for $7-$8 a bottle, which is necessary because I go through a lot. Prior to that o was using the SKIN1004 - Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil, which is closer to $12. I loved it, but for me those two are identical. In the past I used Tatcha One-Step Camellia Cleansing Oil which is luxe as all hell and works well, but was $50 for a few ounces.
this is the only way to get rid of them
How long did you use the regimen for before you decided it didn't work?
For Niacinamide I tried for between 2-3 weeks but couldn't do any longer as it was giving me a lot of cystic acne. For salicylic acid I have it used for years, not for the sebaceous filaments but for acne prevention.
So long enough to know for sure.
I have suffered with this for years, saw a TikTok about putting La Roche Posay cicaplast b5 cream on it, worked almost immediately, don’t understand the science behind it but I won’t go to be without it now. Just a small amount on the nose!
My tried and true method is 1) hot shower/steam face 2) oil cleanse the area for 3mins minimum 3) use the Kate Somerville EradiKate blemish treatment (the pink stuff you dot in your face) and cover your nose with it. The sulphur just cleans everything out. I do this like 2x a month
do you have a recommendation for an oil cleanser?
Not an oil cleanser but the EradiKate Daily Foaming Cleanser (sulfur) helps w sebaceous filaments - but fair warning, it does smell like sulfur lol
I use a cleansing balm like from clinic or it cosmetics but honestly any oil cleanser will work ❤️
Is it the little 1 oz bottle?
Yes the 30ml/1oz bottle. White with blue writing :)
As other have said, these are completely normal BUT I had some pretty prominent ones that faded quite drastically once I started using Paula's Choice BHA liquid exfoliant(literally within 3 days). I think its one of the first porducts make an actual visual difference for me.
Same! paula’s choice did wonders for me
How often do you use the BHA? I have it but I think I’m using it wrong cause it stings 😩
I use it twice a day, after cleansing and before serum/moisturizer. I just put about 4 drops into the palm of my hands and fingertips and just lightly dab it on my face, slowly working it in. I haven't found that it stings at all, though, so do be careful!😟
I agree Paula’s choice was one of my best investments, it really makes a difference
Sebaceous filaments are normal and you don't need to get rid of them. Unlike blackheads or acne, this is not a bad sign, just a feature humans have. I can see people gave you some nice advice, so this is just to explain that you don't have to fight this if you don't feel the need to do it.
I have exactly the same skin problem, these clogged dots and some uneven skin complexion
***This really should work if you give it time.*** 2. :)
Try Kate Somerville Sulfur wash. It’s what my dermatologist recommended and it helped improve this same problem with my skin since then🙂
I use the same and it helps!
How would you use that?
Use every night, only on your nose
Thin layer on just the problem areas at night, but I sometimes also do it in the morning if it is going to be cold, it is also good for dry skin.
The cicpalast made more dots for me 😭
Came here to say this! Worked literal magic on my nose and I have tried EVERYTHING
People say they shouldn’t do it, but I just gently squeeze mine out. I’ve had zero issues doing so and look a lot cleaner for it. Not for everyone, but I have done it my whole life and never had an issue
It’s usually fine if you steam your skin before doing it to loosen up the gunk. That way you’re not stretching the pores too much.
Unrelated but It looks like you're kissing us lol.
BHA has worked wonders for me with these. But seeing a lot of comments mentioning niacinmide, I think I might start incorporating it into my routine
Oil cleansing and electric silicone brush
You should try Korean skincare. They helped me so much.
what products do you use ?
I use Beauty of Joseon, the serum and sunscreen. Also I am using Thayer’s Milky Toner. It’s not Korean brand, but it helped my skin so much.
I haven't used it on my face but I get them on my chest.. using Bio Oil helps me a lot. Something about the oil in the product decreases the skins need to produce it?
Get a facial. The esthetician can extract gently. Then use a glycolic acid serum at night and they will not come back as quickly.
Chemical peel
I’ve had this my entire life lol I just assumed it was something I couldn’t change
LRP cicaplast b5 cream!!!!!!
Start steaming your face it works wonders. Put on a clay mask afterward
Pore release by hero cosmetics
A salicylic acid serum would do the trick, i had the same problem, i used 2 drops for my whole nose. Retinol would also help if you're in your 20s.
Cleansing oil rub it gently for 5 mins. Also use niacinamide.
For me, Hydra facial removed them all (no cleanser or face mask or serum I’ve tried was as effective as this). Unfortunately they came back a few days later and still, nothing over the counter I used will get rid of them.
Niacinamide and mandelic acid should help.
Egg white mask using bamboo toilet paper / paper towels as a paper machet, let it dry ALL THE WAY then peel off, can take practice to get the paper machet right ,,, but it pulls em out🤝
Oil cleanse 3 x weekly. Umbrian clay make from fresh. God speed
Good luck
Hey. I had these and double cleansing cleared them pretty well for me, along with the ordinary glycolic acid
Spectro gel!
The products people recommend for this always give me acne on my nose 😭😭😭 anyone else have any other advice?!
This routine has helped keep my pores smaller and Im seeing improvements: 4x a week Night: oil based cleanser followed by water based cleanser. Then retinol cream followed by a moisturizer. Morning: gentle water based cleanser followed with sunscreen that has niacinamide
Girl, I also have that before. What I did were: - I do double cleansing (oil-based cleanser & water-based cleanser) - I use serum w/ niacinamide - glycolic acid toner So far so good… it’s really good to invest in ur skin.
Ordinary serum
In new to this sub. Is sebaceous filaments another word for blackheads? Because as a newbie I saw this and was like just push your nose up and those bad boys will pop right out. Also please don’t downvote me I really am new here. You’d know that if you just looked at my skin.
Black heads
Looks like sebaceous filaments.
What sulfur cleanser do you use?
I use a sulphur soap bar by Revitale but I'm sure there's others out there. I lather up my face, leave it on for half a minute, then rinse off and go in with another cleanser to get rid of the smell
Use a pore extractor tool. that’s how i get rid of mine
Oil cleanser!
cute 🥺
Steam your face 1x weekly, gently squeeze small areas all over the nose…you’ll be surprised at what comes out of your pores.
they’re most likely blackheads, aka dirt, sebum, and old skin clogging up your pores. always be sure to clean off old product (even in skincare with zero makeup, never just apply another layer, still cleanse your face). i’m gonna guess you’re a teenager still so it’s also more common to get them with breakout-prone skin. just always cleanse and exfoliate 1-2 times a week, avoid touching your face as much as possible, including with your cellphone. if it doesn’t clear up you can consider consulting a derm for more targeted treatment and to see if they’re actually sebaceous filaments. just don’t pick, don’t automatically assume they’re not just blackheads & jump on immediate harsh products like most comments are suggesting without knowing for sure, and welcome to having skin!! xD
Ah yes!! I use biore strips for that
Low dose accutane is the only way to completely remove them. Accutane shrinks your oil glands
Dunk your face in ice water for a few seconds makes PORES that’s what those are smaller
I use Paula’s choice bha for this and it’s amazing.
Those are blackheads
You need la roche posey effaclar duo
hero nose patches
Oil cleanse!

Hydrocollid patches! Totallly changed my skin
April Skin has a cleansing balm (Carrotene Hydromelt cleansing balm) that is great at removing/reducing them. The balm is $26 for 3.4oz on the brand’s website. I think Amazon also carries it.
I've been seeing dermatologists recommend sulfur for sebaceous filaments.
Oil cleansing does the job !
Blackheads….wash face , scrub with gentle exfoliation then use a biore strip on your nose or a mask that will stick to nose when pulled off.
Salicylic acid will clear these right up! Use it in an overnight product and you’ll be amazed after just a couple of days the improvement.
DR BERG IS GOD - don't believe his recommendations work? try one - its free.... hes changed my life more than any doctor and Ive been to many https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNCtw7hHTTI

Those are sebaceous filaments. Double cleansing (first with an oil cleanser then with a water based cleanser) helped with mine!
You can just squeeze em out too. It’s kinda fun
Hey, I get those two their little blackheads the best I would recommend is going to target or Walgreens and getting one of those nose strips to help peel out the blackheads
I had these and chemo therapy made them go away…. not sure why that was/is
Pop them!!!!!
Saving this bc my face is the same way and had no idea either.
I’m surprised it got this many reply’s
Try over the counter Differin - it is a retinoid and will cause the skin to turn, which is what you want - it will clean out your pores
I have suffered with this for years, saw a TikTok about putting La Roche Posay cicaplast b5 cream on it, worked almost immediately, don’t understand the science behind it but I won’t go to be without it now. Just a small amount on the nose!
A biore pore strip will zap these babies away in 5 min. :)
