The musical style makes metal metal, or metalcore sound metal. It has nothing the fuck to do with every lyric needing to be with intense vocals or not. A7x doesn't always do scream vocals either and nobody would say they aren't Metal, ditto Avatar and Metallica. People would consider Black Sabbath the OG Metal and yet Ozzy doesn't do extreme vocals. You don't need to do intense extreme vocals for Metal to be Metal.

Personally I don’t like processed vocals because they often feel out of place and not as interesting compared to the rest of the song they’re in, but hats off to those who enjoy them

And lately Corey's Formula has been growling verses and clean choruses, as clean choruses help your vocal chords to recover before the next set of growling, while it also gives the audience a chance to rest a bit between moshing.
Nu metal barely has that xD and besides, the metal core bands I listen to are mostly BMTH n GHØSTKID, which lead singers have pretty deep singing voices.
