We often forget how absolutely covered in horseshit streets were. It was everywhere. It was a career in some cities to just clean up horseshit. All the time. Every day. Horseshit.

ahdiomasta

Before the automobile, some people were concerned that New York city would be literally drowning in horse shit due to the ever increasing traffic.

AmbitiousAd9320

those basement doors used to be first story. NYC built the streets and sewer system up from the ground.

[deleted]

Didn’t they just remove that entire layer of dirt overtime?

adotang

Wasn't that actually one of the big customer appeals of the automobile? That cars didn't shit everywhere and didn't really need to be cleaned up for aside from general maintenance? I mean, the leaded gas and lasting pollution kind of made the clean-up job a later problem, but it was the start of the century and this same society also thought soda could cure illnesses, so I'll cut them some slack.

phuck-you-reddit

Trading certain challenges for others. Don't have to spend so much time feeding or cleaning up after an automobiles. But you could break your wrist or otherwise hurt yourself when starting it. And they were temperamental and needed lots of maintenance here and there. But early automobile owners were wealthy and paid people to do the dirty jobs either way. Would you rather smell and step in horse shit regularly or breath leaded auto exhaust fumes? 🤔

FaultyToenail

That is horse shit

RedditsAdoptedSon

im so fkn confused cause thats also not how one would collect or pile horse shit

Jsin8601

I mean, its literally where the plague came from

eatthebear

We also often forget that in the US, slavery didn’t end with the 13^th Amendment.

PuzzleheadedOil1560

It's a shame that more municipalities don't use criminals for all types of work. No matter what their skin color. If you commit a crime, be ready to accept the consequences. Why should taxpayers pay for criminals' housing and food. Make them earn it.

eatthebear

There are a lot of places that will charge an inmate for the cost of their own incarceration.

Capable-Ground8272

I know this is probably a stupid question, but, is the street made of dirt?

DoxedFox

They had a lot of sweeping left to do.

cncomg

I think they’re mostly sweeping horse shit.

ynot2020

You just keep shaking that bush so we know you're there. Just keep shaking that bush.

So you've seen O Brother Where Art Thou

SillyFlyGuy

>Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Napoleonic_Chode

I think its the same thing as handcuffs. Sure you can run away but everyone that sees you will be suspicious and youll be limited in where you can go.

TxConcrete

I look like they may be attached to each other along with the ball

I bet this would be a great deterrent to many misdemeanors these days... Forced Labor... FAAFO...

Sluttymargaritaville

We do have forced labor. It’s rampant and it’s slavery and it’s not a deterrent it’s just immoral

RedditsAdoptedSon

dammit.. they now made fuck around n find out = faafo??? dammit that saying is dumb af n overused now

NJRach

Wow. I had never considered that a ball & chain was a literal thing. I’d only ever seen it portrayed in cartoon form in reference to marriage.

Radiant_Cookie6804

Forced labor is worth shit, that's why not much of it left

alta_vista49

Bet the black dude was locked up for talking to a white person (probably woman)

CathyHistoryBugg

The prison system doesn’t change. Why aren’t they teaching our current prisoners and these poor guys a trade so that they can feed a family? We need handiman types, tilers, anything in the trades. Criminals except for the mentally handicapped ones usually have no trade or skills. If we taught them one in prison, why would they want to continue in their felonious habits? Most would reform. Instead, we keep them immature, no life skills and they get out and get right back into working and scheming with the same people who got them into trouble in the first place. So sad.

THE_ALAM0

I’d like to go to trade school to become a sparky, but can’t afford the cost of tuition. Oh, I know! I’ll commit a crime, that way the bleeding hearts that want to rehabilitate criminals cover the cost for me.

flaminghair348

You should be able to afford to go to trade school. Prisoners should have access to training and rehabilitation services in prison so that they can have lives once they get out of prison. Both of these things can be true, why do you assume that by rehabilitating prisoners, we can’t also increase public funding to trade schools so that people who can’t afford tuition can go? These things aren’t mutually exclusive; we can make prisoners lives better and that of citizens on the outside.

taffy-derp

“If Im a loser and broke then everyone should be as well!!” Republican Party slogan 2024

THE_ALAM0

Lmao, it’s a republican concept to believe in justice served for those who have been done wrong by criminals? Come on man

Shrampys

Not teaching prisoners skills is serving justice?

THE_ALAM0

Why would they deserve free training on lucrative careers while law abiding citizens struggle to get to the same point through apprenticeships or schooling? If you do wrong against someone, wrong should be done against you. Hammurabi himself held this standard to his people, why would we reward criminal behavior instead?

laughingashley

Because it's sooo easy to get a good job with a criminal record, right? Why give them any help with that when we can just keep locking them up?

THE_ALAM0

I’ve got an even better idea, one that has kept me out of jail for years: *don’t commit crimes.* Y’all are effectively saying we should reward criminal behavior.

laughingashley

Willful density here, yikes

THE_ALAM0

Right…it’s dense to suggest that if you want to stay out of prison, don’t do things that land you in prison. Sure.

Nice_Spread9289

I think the idea of it all is that the judicial system is fucked and there are people breaking laws that shouldn’t be in place or shouldn’t land you in prison/jail. Relax

Nice_Spread9289

Oh I didn’t read context I wasn’t able to respond to your last. That’s fucked lol

laughingashley

You're a zero strikes kinda person and it shows. Must be nice to have such privilege.

Jiminwa

I take it people didn't loot a lot in 1909.

Shrampys

Crime was a lot worse back then actually

Jiminwa

I've noticed from the 80s to the present that the use of humor is frowned upon and, tbh, not even recognized. It's pretty sad actually.

Ultrasaurio

The fact that he is black really makes me doubt his guilt due to the era of the photo.

vfr147

I hang myself with that chain if I had to sweep that!!

[deleted]

I mean, you’re getting fresh air and out of the prison. Not a bad deal if I were in prison.

vfr147

Bro you see how thick that shit is?
