Lots of hikes or cycle routes in the area, if you'll have your own transport there are some fantastic spots nearby for all sorts of activities

Imaginary_Answer4493

Which school are you going too? It might be worth getting in touch with your future year head and asking for info on sports/activities/clubs there are.

babypluto67

I'm not sure about school rn, I'm 17,18 in November and I haven't got a proper grasp of the school system that side but I might do A levels or a btech somewhere

Imaginary_Answer4493

Ah okay. The schools are pretty good in Taunton and there is a great college. Cricket is popular but there are plenty of football clubs you could join. The town has a decent cinema and bowling/arcade, Bristol is thirty minutes away and that has tons of stuff to do. There’s some great pubs but no decent clubs in Taunton, you’d need to go to Bristol for that. The people are very friendly and it’s pretty safe here. The only thing I would say is that unless you’re going to be living close to town, you’ll need a car. Public transport is rubbish. Jump on some local Facebook groups if you want to meet people your age. You’ll like it here, it’s a really nice place to live.

AngelMoneySW

Since when was Bristol 30 minutes away from Taunton

DuckDuckFrogs

The train is 30mins. Car is longer.

FiendishHawk

You need to be in education until you are 18. It’s the law.

babypluto67

When I said I'm it so sure about school, I meant on what I was thinking to do, whether it be A levels or a B Tech not as I'm I don't want school🤣

MyNewLifeExperiment

That's not been true for a long time. For around a decade at 16 you need to either be in full time education or an apprenticeship.

MyNewLifeExperiment

So as that says, if youre not at school you have to be either in part time education alongside working 20 hours, or on an apprenticeship, which is a form of education/training. So what the previous commenter said is correct no? If not tell me how quoting the page you shared.

babypluto67

Thank you, I appreciate it

Like anywhere in the UK there are loads of football fans in Taunton. There isn't really a 'big' local team so a lot of people will support a big premier league club. There will be clubs nearby that you could join, or if you're in education then your college/school/uni will have a team. Taunton is big enough to have a good range of different national/regional cuisine available. But Bristol will be better for this. Thrift/vintage/second hand shopping for men is pretty bad in my opinion. Again, Bristol will be better. I don't know if you've ever used Vinted before but it's an app where people sell second hand clothes and you can get some great stuff on there. There are bars and at least one nightclub in Taunton unless I'm mistaken. It's not a brilliant night out but it's fine. Bristol is a really good night out. Like other people have pointed out, Bristol has far more to offer for young people, unless you like the countryside and living in a less built up area. I'm not sure what you're used to in terms of public transport but in general it's quite expensive in this part of the UK, especially train travel.

I spend half my time in South Africa and half in Taunton. I’ve gone from never ever seeing a black African in Taunton to seeing say 25 on a drive through town. I think there is a huge uptick in African migration since post Brexit there is less interest from Europeans wanting to work in the UK. I’d say these days you will find people from diverse backgrounds. Taunton is safe, pretty relaxed and not the worst place. But it is incredibly boring. About the only thing of note is drinking, the cricket ground and the enormous potholes. It’s got the feeling of a place that had better times in the past, but it is surrounded by good countryside and nothing particularly bad happens. So beats most of the world, right?

Matterbox

Taunton is a great central location for so much adventure. The railway station gives you access to Bristol and Exeter in no time at all. Beyond that there’s loads to see on both coasts and in between.

FiendishHawk

Taunton is very very boring. However it is peaceful and safe. Could be worse. I left at 18 and it was like my life suddenly changed into colour. I would recommend studying hard and going away to university.

VineIsDedLikeMySoul

taunton has addicts everywhere

CandleJakk

You'd probably have a better chance getting into Cricket, as the Somerset team are based there, and Taunton fairly regularly hosts international games as well.

babypluto67

I've never been a fan of cricket in the slightest

treesamay

Go and watch Taunton play T20. They are the current national champions and bat hard! The atmosphere is great.

RedBanana99

I’m a 50yo woman and I enjoy watching live cricket a lot. I’m not a fan of watching it on the tv, but Taunton ground is so close and the whole day is great. Last year they had this huge outside bar which was self service, a couple of tractors out and music. Plus delicious junk food and overpriced drinks, but you are watching the cream of Somerset I get quite emotional in the 2020s

babypluto67

Sigh, no Sunday league either?

CandleJakk

Not sure, my partner tells me there is a local club in Taunton. I'm sure there's gotta be a Sunday league team, given the hole country is football mad. There's usually a community group on facebook - you might have more luck on one of those?

deanlr90

There is Sunday league, check it out on Facebook

LukeeC4

There are plenty of football clubs at all levels. We have a local football team playing a couple divisions below the national league football. I recommend joining the “Taunton Matters” facebook group and post a message asking what football teams are open for sign ups when you get here.

babypluto67

Thanks I'll keep this in mind

Lxium

There is 6 or so charity shops for clothing which may quench your needs but they are not great.

jonnyshowbiz

Look at apprenticeships at Hinkley point. That way you can earn while you learn.

babypluto67

Thank you

celticgit

Lucky you... I would visit Wells in Somerset. Nice old town, cathedral and the oldest street of terraced housing in the UK. Then there is Glastonbury. Fantastic rock music festival there. There is a good feeling I get when I look to the west . I worked in the Bridgwater area in the early 1970 's. Bridgwater holds a good festival every November with associated events.

bustinferno12

Somerset as a whole is a cultural desert, if you want to do something with something you're interested in, you'll have to get in a car and go somewhere else. Unless you like cider and a fight.

Mission-Shoe6684

Nice comment. Twat!

bustinferno12

You Seriously butt hurt because you decided to come on the Internet and read a comment you don't like? Somerset has turned into a disenfranchised shithole like it or not.

babypluto67

If you guys don't mind me asking, how diverse is the place ethnicity wise and colour as well

Leading_Confidence64

I've lived in Taunton my whole life. Before Covid you could walk one end of the town to the other without seeing a person of colour. Now it's a little more diverse but racism has never been massive in the area.

Lxium

Yes OP today I see more non white people in Taunton than I ever have but it's still a very low% of people

bastomax

Not diverse at all. These figures are from 2011 when it was around 98% white. Can't imagine it's changed much. [https://populationdata.org.uk/taunton-population/](https://populationdata.org.uk/taunton-population/)

Dr_momo

It’s the whitest area you can imagine. I visit my family there and it shocks me how not-diverse the area is. However, people are friendly and welcoming. Taunton isn’t the liveliest town, but the area is beautiful - Sonerset, Devon and Dorset are not short of stunning walks, beaches and countryside.

babypluto67

As a black person, African especially 🤣 I wanna party man, all of this is making me not so excited anymore💀

Leading_Confidence64

We do have nightclubs and also neighbouring times like Bridgwater have a great nightlife

Dr_momo

Ha, yeah, it’s not a party town and is one of the most conservative parts of the country. It’s more pub-culture. Theres entertainment (cinemas etc) but not really what you’re after. Bristol is a great city and within reach.

babypluto67

Sounds like commutes to bristol will be regular. What are the transport cost like?

LukeeC4

Bristol is £20ish for a return ticket on the train. I would note they stop running before midnight though. The falcon bus runs all day but only every few hours and at inconvenient stops, its only about £5 for a return though. It takes about 3-4 times longer than the train.

Dr_momo

Not sure. I live up North these days so you’ll have to Google around if no one replies here.

GTB2000

Depends when you go, but Bristol isn't too expensive to travel to by train from Taunton and you are more or less bang in the city centre meaning you could easily walk or catch the bus to different parts of the city.

LukeeC4

Don’t listen to these people, its what you make of it. Theres plenty of party culture if you bother going out and looking 😂 We have Mambo which is usually the liveliest and nearly always packed on a Saturday night. Its a bit overpriced though but it stays open til 3am and has a (smallish) dance floor. The nightclub admittedly turned a bit shit, but has recently rebranded under new management so that might become good again. There are numerous pubs that are busy at the weekends all with different vibes and demographics. Often there’s live music to be found at these. We also have a fairly busy sports bar which you can play games of pool, eat, or just sit on the sofas whilst watching football (most commonly on the biggest screens) or other sports on the giant screens. There are shit loads of smaller tvs showing loads of other live sports at the same time also. I think this would be the most appropriate for you, lots in your age group hang out here. You don’t have to be 18 to be there, only to buy alcohol. Cosy Club, Prezzo and Pitcher & Piano are more upmarket places that do very nice cocktails.

LukeeC4

The majority are white Brits, but you wouldn’t struggle to meet other ethnicities in the slightest. The people saying so don’t get out much 😂 We get plenty of people move here from African countries to work in social care or nursing at the hospital. Racism is likely to be limited to the elderly.
