Man if only our moderators would put a sticky post up.

We live on the South East side near Ironwood and Ireland…twykingham area, and I love it, we’ve been here for almost 20 years, and I feel completely safe.

yidabissann

Google maps has a filter where you can see all the pinned recent general crime activities. That way you can get a more well rounded idea of which neighborhoods are the least safe.

xxSpeedsterxx

Although not an exhaustive list but generally let's start with the downtown area. Although it is relatively safe you WILL be approached by panhandlers and homeless. South side: Within the city limits anywhere south of Ireland Rd is pretty safe. Also southeast the Deer Run area is very safe but pricey. East side: Anywhere east past Twyckenham and all of Twyckenham Hills is pretty safe. North side: Pretty much anywhere within 1/2 mile around Notre Dame or the general area north of Notre Dame is pretty good. West side? Just forget the west side of the city all the way to the airport.

QIsForQuitting

Apart from the areas around Trinity School and along Jefferson/Wayne St., some of the nicest/coolest parts of the city are on the westside, especially along Portage south of Angela/Diamond. I think it would be a big mistake to rule out the entire westside.

xxSpeedsterxx

At that point you are talking about more of the north side than really west.

yodera1

South side I would say anywhere South of Ewing is actually pretty safe.

xxSpeedsterxx

Miami Hills wants a word with you

tlewallen

The west side is fine past Mayflower.

xxSpeedsterxx

Yes but then you're not in the city limits.

gitsgrl

Ridgedale, Sunnymede, wooded estates…

TokinPixy

The west side of SB is somewhere to avoid. The south side (near the fair grounds) is nice and very residential but close 5-10 mins from shopping etc. downtown-“city” vibes w/ walking distance to restaurants bars etc- there is a notable homeless population here. Sunnymead- decent area close to everything more of an urban vibe than south side. Mishawaka is pretty safe, but will still have the random crime.

QIsForQuitting

From LEO: avoid the neighborhoods of Lasalle Area and Far Northwest. And the area between Sample St./Lincolnway W going south to Ewing. All areas have streets that can be rough, so just use good judgement while finding a home. But apart from the areas I mentioned, as long as you're not involved in criminal activity, you shouldn't have anything to worry about (violent crime-wise; just like in any city, there will be property crime everywhere). Good luck finding a place, and welcome to South Bend! It really is a great city.

PaleFaithlessness771

The west side is probably the least safe area

[deleted]

I wonder what influence these kinds of posts have had on local development.

KillRoyIsEverywhere

South Side (twyckenham hills) born and raised. Currently live in southern Mishawaka but my wife and I are going to be moving back to Twyckenham hills soon. Having a ton of family who have worked for SBPD and the city government, I wouldn’t live any where else in south bend honestly from their knowledge alone

[deleted]

Right. And these posts might reinforce and strengthen those disparities

say592

Which is honestly stupid because there are safer areas in the city and plenty of areas that are as safe.

KillRoyIsEverywhere

The crime map says other wise as does the police scanner. https://southbendin.gov/transparency-and-performance/police-transparency-hub/sbpd-incident-data/

Silence-i

Much of Mishawaka is safe as well. Check out the area near Mishawaka High School, Eberhart golf course and Merrifield /Crawford park.

KillRoyIsEverywhere

Twyckenham Hills, Ridgedale and anywhere south of Ireland Road is probably the safest areas in South Bend. Mishawaka is safe all around minus 12th and Merrifield area.

This is categorically false. Turn off Fox News and go outside, you might actually enjoy it.

M696rider

Maybe if you could find something next to the police station, outside of that I don't know.

say592

Have you ever even been to the police station? That is one of the areas that I would be more likely to avoid. Its not the worst area in the city, but it not a good area.

M696rider

I literally was just talking shit, everyone gets so bent out of shape so easily. South bend has its good and bad just like any other city. If I had to live in Southbend most likely would head to the Southside

say592

Talking shit is fine, but it should at least make sense.

M696rider

Talking shit doesn't require making sense, that's why it's called talking shit. But anyway have a good night. Sorry if you were offended as well

GatePotential805

Stay away from the south and west sides.

Huge_Ad3216

I’m stopping at four winds casino to break up a drive, is that area ok to stay overnight?  About 1 mile from casino??
