AadInfinitum

Something about Randy hiding right in his Harry Potter closet is really funny hahaha.

KingMobScene

Should have been a gimmick match. Either hardcore or hell in the cell or something. They should have gone after each other like they wanted to commit murder. But then they just had the same old match.

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I thought a Three Stages of Hell would've been great

SuperCyan202

Funnily enough they ended up having one later in the year

Former_Masterpiece_2

and it was... kinda mid honestly

Kanenums88

Correction, it was a match where if HHH was DQ’d he’d lose the title. Just a slap in the face wasn’t it?

BOOMphrasingBOOM

Blood feud=open the match with a collar and elbow tie up

TRTVitorBelfort

Annoys me to this day! To this day!

Winningsomegames_1

The only reasons I can think of personally is that there was already a blood feud blowoff with Matt and Jeff on the card and it’s a WM main event so it must be worked in the normal “epic main event” style Triple H worked all the time. If you think about it triple H was very inflexible when it came to what kind of match he wants to work in WM main events other then the multi man ones. Batista, Cena, Orton, and reigns matches were all extremely similar.

Geraltpoonslayer

Kinda sad considering the first taker/hunter match was so good with them fighting in the crowd

Sky-Flyer

how does the 28 match compare to the 17 match in your opinion

Espio1332

Not OP, but the emotion was more palpable in 28 while the in-ring work was better in 17 imo.

Intimidwalls1724

Nailed it

Vikingr12

Triple H's best matches after the quad tear were always hardcore matches. It just had a better flow

ThreeEyedPea

Even worse, the stipulation was that if Triple H got disqualified, he would lose the title.

dubbs4president

Two biggest factors for why this match was a flop. 1. Crowd was exhausted after Taker/Michaels and Stone Cold coming out on his ATV. 2. Starting the match and hitting their finishes early put them in a tough spot to build up to anything.

payscottg

HHH is like cursed with having Mania matches that under deliver. WM12, WM16, WM18, WM19, WM25, WM31, WM32 all range from disappointing to garbage

KidGold

HHH and Roman were the kings of underwhelming mania matches. Luckily Roman has seemingly bucked the trend to a degree.

DidiGreglorius

Roman mostly just had shit to work with. Mania 31 was great even before Seth came out, people forget how well that was going. 32-34 the ring work almost didn’t matter given how bad the booking around it all was. 37 & 39 were bangers, 38 was the only one that coulda been something and wasn’t.

KidGold

Yep agreed. That stretch of 32-38 when his only good mania match was the triple threat (which Bryan and Edge kinda carried) was so rough, but after 39 he has is 2 for the last 3 and this year should produce 2 more great matches.

tummysqueker

is 12 really his fault though? didn’t warrior just come in and change it to a squash match against his word?

payscottg

I don’t think any of them are his fault. At least not totally. Doesn’t change the fact that he has a lot of bad Mania matches

DisFigment

Mania 35’s snoozer against Batista says hello.

osmomandias

Was he in the main event in all of them? 12 was Warrior, 19 was Booker T and Rock vs Austin 3 was Raw's main event. 31 was Sting

payscottg

I meant to just say “Mania matches” not main events

osmomandias

Gotcha

empiresk

> cursed Or perhaps not a great wrestler and merely a good one?

Former_Masterpiece_2

nah he's great just didn't have great matches all the time it takes two to tango

The_Dark_Soldier

The crowd would have made noise had that been the case. Wouldn’t have been better than Taker/Michaels but they’d at least react to the plunder and mayhem that HHH/Orton should have been.

baberlay

Genuinely, this thing should have been a fight to the (PG-TV appropriate) death.

empiresk

The worst Mania event in recent history. Incredible how much it fucking stunk and killed Orton as potential tippy top guy and settled into the main event level but not top star of the company.

str8_rippin123

I think it needed to be hell in a cell tbh

pipebomb316

i tell my kids this is AJ Styles and LA Knight

peja823

Seriously as crazy eyed as both of them are looking right now . I'd love a segment like this between them

pipebomb316

even that poor TV got a taste of LA, AJ aint safe

peja823

That tv gonna have to seek abuse counseling

peja823

Since they're working their way east towards Philly, How close to Gainesville do they get prior to that

t00043480

who was te guy that ran into the other room at the start

DedTV

Thats Stan. Randy's been helping him with severe Agoraphobia he developed after he was brutally attacked at work. A true tear jerking story.

BathedInDeepFog

Current nxt superstar Stan

DedTV

It's been a long road to recovery for Stan. It's a dark tale of trauma, identity loss.... and maybe, a chance at redemption. ***If*** he can forgive the man who started it all, and allow him to become his mentor...

Dkcg0113

Randy was doing an interview with the announcers via satellite. It was a crew member in his house

AedionMorris

The Bryan Alvarez review of the finish to this match kills me. "Orton has spent years punting people in the head, he finally gets punted here and nobody gave a fuck. He's been getting his ass beat this whole feud and the match was 50/50. Nobody cared. Hunter mounted for some punches. Crowd was silent. Hunter hit the pedigree, everybody looked to the back, nobody came, Hunter pinned him, everyone said, "that's it?" and then we all left."

Blobbentein

I respect the hell out of both guys but nothing in the world sounds less interesting than a Triple H vs. Randy Orton Mania match

NBAStuffAsUsual

It could have been really sick but it was a flop. Like, this man has intentionally tried to give your entire family CTE that will last generations, and you Triple H, the guy *who has actually tried to kill people in continuity for far far less*, just mat wrestle him to a finish.

PrimeJedi

That point about HHH is a good point. Didn't he try to have Steve Austin murdered because he went against the McMahon-Helmsley Regime and was difficult to beat on his own? Meanwhile Orton attacked everyone and freaking *kissed an unconscious Stephanie* , and HHH doesn't at least push for an ambulance match or something?

NBAStuffAsUsual

Not even the Steve Austin thing, Triple H tried to fucking *re-cripple* his best friend on planet earth simply because his friend had an unbelievable recovery and triple H was worried about his shine being taken away. Steph in canon is genuinely the only person he's near unilaterally nice to and even then she still took a pedigree once, how did he not show up to Randy's house w/ a .12 gauge and a flak jacket ready to accept whatever consequences came his way lmaoo?

DidiGreglorius

They have this weird thing with Mania main event matches never getting big stipulations. It’s like the furthest they’ll go is no DQ. I feel like it’s because that’s when the most mainstream eyes are on the product, but even then I don’t really get it. HIAC, TLC, Last Man Standing could all work great for the finale.

Former_Masterpiece_2

McMahon-Helmsley didn't exist yet that happened after Mania 00 HHH was feuding with Mcmahon at the time his taking out Austin was just a way to limit his opponent pool he also in kayfabe broke Mankind's knees

Brendanlendan

All I ever wanted was an evolution triple threat. Batista should have been in the match.

that_boyaintright

Fatal four way with Ric Flair, who spends the entirety of the match flopping and shaking his head.

Brendanlendan

Orrrrr he’s the special referee

Dkcg0113

Nice try. This happened when I was a senior in high school which means it was only- oh my god.

Reed2002

joncornelius

Hello fellow rapidly aging person from the class of 2009. Welcome to your first mid-life crises! 😃

krak_is_bad

Remember when our parents would talk about the 60s and how that seemed like an eternity ago? 60s-90s is the same gap as the 90s to now.

SweetHatDisc

When did I hurt you????

Hamples

I just saw someone mention that a band should do a cover of Bowling for Soup's "1985" this year and call it "2005" instead since it would be the exact same time gap.

krak_is_bad

https://youtu.be/zaAYUZqZvlA?si=099EYdOrEE_nAR_b Like this?

Hamples

Yes, exactly! And it hurts just as much as I imagined...

mr_wrestling

Ohhellno nope not uh

Coopscw

In all seriousness seeing stuff you witnessed turn into ‘classic segments’ is some what of a mind fuck. The classic segments of my day are from the 80s which is quite frankly scary.

The_Dark_Soldier

I constantly hear podcasters say that Demolition and Hart Foundation were their tag teams when they grew up. You know who I grew up with? Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch and Deuce & Domino!

solsunlite

I was a freshman😭

mr_wrestling

I was out of high school for like 4 years. 🧓

thelustymoogle

Same, dude...same 😭

The_Dark_Soldier

I was in the fourth grade when this happened. Now I’m…hmm.

mrgpsingh1999

Same

40waterfonzeralli

I was 10 years old 🤠

PrimeJedi

I'm wayyy younger, I was actually only 6 when this came out, so I'll be starting high school this fall :) .....wait nvm, I'm actually turning 21 this August...

anutosu

I'm only realising that this was the follow up to the segment where Randy kisses Steph and with everything that has come out that whole segment was probably a Vince doing....

UpTheShaggingReds

The feud was fucking PERFECT though. About as edgy as it got during that first year after going PG. I was hooked to every episode of raw as a child that year. One of my favorite feuds ever

RT3_12

Yeah there was nothing wrong with the build up until Mania. It was actually one of the best builds ever. It was the match that sucked.

UpTheShaggingReds

Taker vs HBK being so good killed any chance of that match being last really. Plus it should have been a No dq match/ HIAC/ I quit. Something brutal would have fit the storyline

RT3_12

Taker and HBK went on really early in the show relatively. So the crowd had plenty of time to recover. The match was just boring, like you said the crowd would have gotten back up for a HIAC or something.

realtennisguy

RAW was getting their highest rating since the Attitute Era during this WM build up thanks to these two. They got 6.1+ mil viewers two weeks in a row.

UpTheShaggingReds

There’s a reason everyone still talks about Triple H breaking into Randy Ortons home and Randy Orton kissing Stephanie McMahon whilst Triple H is handcuffed to the ropes That year of Orton is my favourite maybe aside from Pandemic Orton. He’s at his best when he’s a psycho

realtennisguy

2009 and 2020 are his best years. 2009 Orton is his peak but overall the year was far from great. Post WM RAW was probably their worst year ever, quality wise. 2020 Orton wasn't booked as strong and didn't feel that high on the card but was delivering constantly every week. Already had memorable segments even before the pandemic with Beth and Edge.

CorrectAttitude6637

I don't remember where I read it, but apparently it was Steph who did the majority of the writing for that story

Impressivefanwater

great feud but terrible mania match.

HartfordWhalers123

Sucks because the matches they had after Mania were really good. And that’s because they actually went full blood feud and had them wrestle another LMS match (a year after the one that injured Orton) and Three Stages of Hell. Basically, what they also should’ve done with the WrestleMania match. It’s just really weird, considering their history. Even their 2008 feud, all of their 1v1 PPV matches were stipulation matches.

Brendanlendan

Right?!?!? There was already far too much history between the two for them to do a simple one v one. I truly hope whoever insisted on a standard match was fired.

BOOMphrasingBOOM

Wait a second, why was the camera crew there 🤔🤔

ZealousidealScheme85

If I remember correctly the plot for that nights raw was that orton was at his home and present through a satellite broadcast when triple H crashed the scene I’d assume the satellite broadcast was just a camera crew

MarkMVP01

Yea, just before HHH broke the door down, Orton was cutting a promo on him for being too much of a coward to show up to Raw to fight Rhodes and DiBiase 2 on 1

Zero-89

Why were *several* camera crews there?

Ok_Transition_2070

You’re probably thinking, non initiated folk, that this feud had a mania match which was no disqualification and they brutalized each other but randy orton won correct? Do I have some news for you……

NotClayMerritt

That whole feud was so wasted. The only stipulation for the match was if Triple H got DQ'd, he loses the belt. They then did the exact same stipulation a month later at Backlash but in a 6 man tag. Then Triple H went away for a bit and when they finally circled back around to do the big stipulation to put a bow on this heated rivalry in July, it was a Three Stages of Hell match. The 3 stipulations being............ A standard singles match....... Falls Count Anywhere........ and.................... A Stretcher match. Mind you, a month before Batista and Orton did a Steel Cage match after only a month of feuding. 2009 wasn't too bad a year imo but man some shit they did was really a harbinger for what was to come in 2010 and their sanitized PG product.

RT3_12

2009 is a weird year in that the writing was bad, but you still had a lot of the old guard around (Batista, HHH, HBK, Orton, Cena, Taker, Jericho etc.) so you still got some good stuff in spite of bad booking just cause of the pure talent involved.

cgurts

Its wild how quickly the roster changed between 2009 and 2011. Within 2 years, the main event scene goes from that to: Orton, Cena, Punk, Del Rio.

Former_Masterpiece_2

IMO the best-written feuds/matches were Punk vs Hardy and Jericho vs Mysterio

natedoggcata

I remember that Three Stages of Hell match really pissing me off when I first saw it. Triple H hits Randy Orton with a chair like 3 minutes into the first fall and gets DQ'd. Then he just immediately pins Orton to win the second fall. So the Falls Count Anywhere match was pretty much a waste. So what the fuck was the point of doing a Three Stages of Hell match if you are just gonna pull that shit? The entire match was basically just the Stretcher match.

bajaxx

I mean it not being no DQ is bad but triple h definitely should have won that match, they can’t have orton do all that and then go over

ZealousidealScheme85

Remember watching this with my brothers hyped as fuck

RepresentativeFly565

Wm 25 is one of those wms that doesn't get talked about alot with the exception of one match (hbk vs taker) Same with wm 24, 15, 22, 6,

RT3_12

WM25 and WM18 are kindred spirit Manias. Largely forgettable besides one match, bookended by a cold HHH babyface win I don’t know what you’re talking about with WM24 tho. That had 4 memorable matches and is one of the better modern manias (HBK-Flair, Cena vs HHH vs Orton, Maywhether vs Show, and Edge vs Taker). And WM22 was an all around solid show with 3 memorable matches (Cena/HHH, Edge/Foley, Michaels/McMahon)

RepresentativeFly565

And the one match wm 15 had is the weaker rock and Austin match. Wm 15 may be up there with 11 and 9 in terms of WrestleManias that aren't worth revisiting

RT3_12

Attitude Era is funny cause it had back to back two of the worst Manias ever in 15 and 16 (during their peak years). But they were sandwiched in between two of the greatest Manias ever (14 and 17)

RepresentativeFly565

Even the two before it are basically one match shows Stone cold winning the title at 14 And Bret vs Austin at 13 I've always thought we are spoiled because many of those earlier wms before the 20s are rough

RT3_12

Taker vs Kane at Mania 14 is also iconic. People retroactively call it a terrible match but I thought it was exactly what it needed to be at the time and I loved it as a kid. Similar to Andre-Hogan.

M1BIGIEMAC

Kane vs. Taker was great. The Deadman dive that Kane dodges which causes Taker to crash through the Announcer's Table, Kane looking like a million bucks by kicking out of 2 Tombstones and "kicking out at 3.1" on the 3rd one. Also the iconic shots of them during the entrances, their staredown and Kane attacking Pete Rose.

Aspiring_Hobo

I feel like that was kinda common during that time (especially 1999 and 2000). The weekly TV was awesome, but the PPVs didn't always live up to the hype, especially WM16, considering that was WWF's best year.

JobTrunicht

The WWE 13 videogame sold WM 15 like the greatest Wrestlemania ever lol

GoldblumsLeftNut

Does a wrestlemania from 16 years ago still count as a “modern mania”? Just asking because I started watching right around then and feel old as fuck thinking about how long ago that actually was.

PISSROTTEN

I'm pretty sure that womans scream is just the Dudley Boys pyro sound

RememberTommorrow

Pure Kino

PickASwitch

Wife screaming in terror, but her posture looks like the DoorDash just arrived.

billy_pickles

Home invasion is illegal. Go to jail triple h.

nupaqk

I remember this segment was top tier in concept, yet there were so many distracting production-related things in execution. Randy's "wife" (not actually his wife, but an actress playing her for the camera) can be summarized as either being confused about everything or standing around in front of a door as it's being broken down by a home invader. Also, her "scream" is a sound clip being played twice in a row, and it sounds a bit like one of the screeches heard during the Fiend/Bray's various segments. Then there's all the random production crew members running around in shots.

Digitalage6302

09 Orton was something else

twistedroyale

This is real to me. My childhood was shocked at what was happening but I liked it. That guy running was funny who was that lmao

AmrishGamer

Little me believed this was all real and loved every part of it..

Ambitious_Pass_1193

This is the kind of shit I miss in triple H WWE. I know current shows are good but wrestling is at its best when it is chaotic. People will always remember these kind of things but will forget about most cinema things.

Stevieeeer

You don’t consider this a cinema thing?

icecreamman456

So you're telling me 2009 kids are now 15? Don't get me wrong, I'm an 05 kid. I'll be 19 soon. But I swear 2009 was like 5 years ago.

ytcnl

I remember watching all the promo material for this match at least 5 years after it happened, and getting hyped to go watch it even though I didn't give two fucks about the product at that time. I could not believe the style of match they went for after doing stuff like this. It was so boring that confusion overshadowed my disappointment.

tehgr8supa

Camera guy waiting outside: "Boy I sure hope somebody goes through that window."

desi_trucker

as soon as i saw that window i knew someone was going thru it...

Kawhibunga

Got their money's worth on the damage deposit for that rental house, that's for sure

hundredjono

They couldn't have picked a worse actress to be Randy's wife in this segment, and the generic sound library scream didn't help

times_zero

Yup. It seems like people's enjoyment of this segment largely depends on their age. For me, I was already an adult by this point, so I hated this segment as it felt corny as hell in a bad way, especially the actor playing Randy's wife. Personally, I thought the peak of their 08-09 feud was Randy kissing Stepth as Hunter was handcuffed, or Randy punting Vince. However, between this segment, the underwhelming WM match, and Randy having to sell for Shane's potato punches my interest in this feud had fallen off by the end.

Anti_Wake

They cut off the best part! While HHH is getting arrested Orton starts yelling at him and trips over the landscaping and hits the ground hard. It was hilarious. Love this segment, good times.

TheClumsyCook

Didnt even wait till Randy was out, nor threatend a baby. Trips gone soft, thankfully Swerve learned from better men

RT3_12

HHH match with a great build that ends with a long boring Harley Race style match. Name a better duo

Crazy-Woodpecker-163

HHH was the babyface in this feud btw.

KNZFive

In his defense, the week before, Orton had knocked out Stephanie and kissed her unconscious body while he made a handcuffed Triple H watch.

RT3_12

And kicked his father in law in the head, and his brother in law, and beat him down like a dozen times prior. This is actually one of the more justifiable babyface beat downs lol

mrgpsingh1999

And the feud started when Randy RKO’ed Stephanie and that’s when they started to acknowledge HHH and Stephanie as a married couple on the air after their kayfabe divorce

RepresentativeFly565

This comment one makes sense if you ignore all the stuff Orton had done up to that point

myslead

Time to play the game

mrgpsingh1999

Was she Randy’s real life wife at that time or a stunt wife?

PickASwitch

Stunt wife.

bajaxx

one of the best builds to a match ever. watched it live as a kid, sick to my stomach it was 15 years ago

TeamPlayerSelect

why was randy mic'd up lol

ReasonableCoyote34

This is cinema

Mc_Square_Root

Damn bro I was 10 years old

B2sxy4u

And 4 years later they were in the authority later, was it ever explained how they were tight again?

Vivics36thsermon

I saw this live on TV and I was eight years old

jmpinstl

Why the fuck were all these people in Randy’s house?

GalactusAteMyPlanet

Did Randy Orton go through real glass though?

Tenthdegree

Wasn’t a gun advocate until this skit. Home invasions are no joke

teelpy

Boy, you would like Pillman then

Tenthdegree

Pillman was right to defend himself. I don’t know how he was the heel in that feud

teelpy

Definitely wasn’t in my eyes. Totally had a loose cannon I don’t call 911 shirt back in the day

CoolZooKeeper

I love these promos. I kinda wish they would do more production stuff like this. I guess it’s probably a money and time constraint.

StillNoPickleesss

15 what?!

MiserableScholar

I was 9 when this came out, and wrestling never seemed so real.

Justice989

What's on the Mt. Rushmore of wrestling home invasions?

noah8573

I remember this was one of the first segments I watched when my dad had started showing us WWE, crazy that it was 15 years ago

glooks369

The last great year of Kayfabe

DamianKing42

That guy running in the hallway 😂😂😂

mr_wrestling

I forgot all about this. 😂 I thought HHH was gonna Pedigree him on the floor. (Is it weird I instinctively capitalized "Pedigree"?)

Thief921

I was so incredibly in on Randy Orton at this point. He was on the run of a lifetime IMO and anyone saying this SHOULDNT have Main Evented was not watching at the time. It's probably my most disappointing Mania main event to date. Match should've been a street fight and Orton should've won.

PickASwitch

Wife screaming in terror, but her posture looks like the DoorDash just arrived.

DongKonga

Randy sold this so well.

ReasonableCoyote34

One of the greatest buildups to a wrestlemania main event ever. Shame the actual match itself sucked. Should’ve been a no DQ match

sethro919

That window would’ve been the biggest Chekhov’s gun if someone didn’t go thru it

himajinfranklin

Those punches tho

KentuckyFriedEel

“Randy Orton’s house” lol this was just some random display hope they could trash

Sailortype

Peak

SSJ5Gogetenks

Ah yes, the segment that shows Orton to have like, four wives.

LeonardoDaPinchy-

Lmao, that canned scream at the start is hilarious

The_Dark_Soldier

One of my favorite raw segments. God I love home invasions in my wrestling. We need more of them.

bigchicago04

I always wonder if it’s really their house

amansdick

The build to wrestlemania 25 was pretty great overall. Sad that the Shawn/ taker match and maybe mitb are the only things really worth going back and revisiting.

cubs1978

Didn’t this lead you to the match at WM 25?

WWFUniverse

And after all this, they went and had a standard match at Wrestlemania. One of the biggest letdown in WM history.

[deleted]

Triple H: if you think you are bad then I'm your dad.

animusd

I remember seeing this on tv and being glued to the TV

Leninators

Oh, hey! I went to this RAW in-person!

illuminati-88

Ah im getting old

MrSpookySkelly

Randy had an entire couch to bump into. The voices in his head convinced him to jump the extra inches to splat into the wall.

slappywhyte

Who was that ghost

MGPythagoras

I miss when wrestlers used to invade each others homes.

BreadfruitCareful622

I forgot all about this.

Barbz182

It's so shit in hindsight 😅

A_Saiyan_Prince

HBK vs. Undertaker should’ve been the main event. This match was the worst one on the card that night. Hands down

Maleficent-Comfort14

And then had just a plain match at Maina

Wonderful_Sector8894

What's funny is you so many fans complained about the Hagman/Swerve home invasion angle and how it made no sense and it's like ummmmm did you see the Orton/HHH home invasion angle?

indiansummerscience

This is the textbook example of why story>wrestling is simply not true.

DeliMustardRules

And this is why people don't really care that Swerve broke into Hanger's house. Shits been done for decades now. It's meaningless.

GenericLuchador

This shit made me stop watching wrestling for a few years lol
