Should have been a gimmick match. Either hardcore or hell in the cell or something. They should have gone after each other like they wanted to commit murder.
But then they just had the same old match.
The only reasons I can think of personally is that there was already a blood feud blowoff with Matt and Jeff on the card and it’s a WM main event so it must be worked in the normal “epic main event” style Triple H worked all the time. If you think about it triple H was very inflexible when it came to what kind of match he wants to work in WM main events other then the multi man ones. Batista, Cena, Orton, and reigns matches were all extremely similar.
Two biggest factors for why this match was a flop.
1. Crowd was exhausted after Taker/Michaels and Stone Cold coming out on his ATV.
2. Starting the match and hitting their finishes early put them in a tough spot to build up to anything.
Roman mostly just had shit to work with.
Mania 31 was great even before Seth came out, people forget how well that was going. 32-34 the ring work almost didn’t matter given how bad the booking around it all was.
37 & 39 were bangers, 38 was the only one that coulda been something and wasn’t.
Yep agreed. That stretch of 32-38 when his only good mania match was the triple threat (which Bryan and Edge kinda carried) was so rough, but after 39 he has is 2 for the last 3 and this year should produce 2 more great matches.
The crowd would have made noise had that been the case. Wouldn’t have been better than Taker/Michaels but they’d at least react to the plunder and mayhem that HHH/Orton should have been.
The worst Mania event in recent history. Incredible how much it fucking stunk and killed Orton as potential tippy top guy and settled into the main event level but not top star of the company.

The Bryan Alvarez review of the finish to this match kills me.

Meanwhile Orton attacked everyone and freaking *kissed an unconscious Stephanie* , and HHH doesn't at least push for an ambulance match or something?
Not even the Steve Austin thing, Triple H tried to fucking *re-cripple* his best friend on planet earth simply because his friend had an unbelievable recovery and triple H was worried about his shine being taken away.
Steph in canon is genuinely the only person he's near unilaterally nice to and even then she still took a pedigree once, how did he not show up to Randy's house w/ a .12 gauge and a flak jacket ready to accept whatever consequences came his way lmaoo?
They have this weird thing with Mania main event matches never getting big stipulations. It’s like the furthest they’ll go is no DQ.
I feel like it’s because that’s when the most mainstream eyes are on the product, but even then I don’t really get it. HIAC, TLC, Last Man Standing could all work great for the finale.

The feud was fucking PERFECT though. About as edgy as it got during that first year after going PG. I was hooked to every episode of raw as a child that year. One of my favorite feuds ever
Taker vs HBK being so good killed any chance of that match being last really. Plus it should have been a No dq match/ HIAC/ I quit. Something brutal would have fit the storyline
Taker and HBK went on really early in the show relatively. So the crowd had plenty of time to recover. The match was just boring, like you said the crowd would have gotten back up for a HIAC or something.

2009 and 2020 are his best years. 2009 Orton is his peak but overall the year was far from great. Post WM RAW was probably their worst year ever, quality wise.
2020 Orton wasn't booked as strong and didn't feel that high on the card but was delivering constantly every week. Already had memorable segments even before the pandemic with Beth and Edge.

That whole feud was so wasted. The only stipulation for the match was if Triple H got DQ'd, he loses the belt. They then did the exact same stipulation a month later at Backlash but in a 6 man tag. Then Triple H went away for a bit and when they finally circled back around to do the big stipulation to put a bow on this heated rivalry in July, it was a Three Stages of Hell match. The 3 stipulations being............ A standard singles match....... Falls Count Anywhere........ and.................... A Stretcher match. Mind you, a month before Batista and Orton did a Steel Cage match after only a month of feuding.
2009 wasn't too bad a year imo but man some shit they did was really a harbinger for what was to come in 2010 and their sanitized PG product.
2009 is a weird year in that the writing was bad, but you still had a lot of the old guard around (Batista, HHH, HBK, Orton, Cena, Taker, Jericho etc.) so you still got some good stuff in spite of bad booking just cause of the pure talent involved.

I don’t know what you’re talking about with WM24 tho. That had 4 memorable matches and is one of the better modern manias (HBK-Flair, Cena vs HHH vs Orton, Maywhether vs Show, and Edge vs Taker). And WM22 was an all around solid show with 3 memorable matches (Cena/HHH, Edge/Foley, Michaels/McMahon)
And the one match wm 15 had is the weaker rock and Austin match.
Wm 15 may be up there with 11 and 9 in terms of WrestleManias that aren't worth revisiting
Attitude Era is funny cause it had back to back two of the worst Manias ever in 15 and 16 (during their peak years). But they were sandwiched in between two of the greatest Manias ever (14 and 17)
Even the two before it are basically one match shows

Taker vs Kane at Mania 14 is also iconic. People retroactively call it a terrible match but I thought it was exactly what it needed to be at the time and I loved it as a kid. Similar to Andre-Hogan.
Kane vs. Taker was great. The Deadman dive that Kane dodges which causes Taker to crash through the Announcer's Table, Kane looking like a million bucks by kicking out of 2 Tombstones and "kicking out at 3.1" on the 3rd one. Also the iconic shots of them during the entrances, their staredown and Kane attacking Pete Rose.
I feel like that was kinda common during that time (especially 1999 and 2000). The weekly TV was awesome, but the PPVs didn't always live up to the hype, especially WM16, considering that was WWF's best year.

I remember this segment was top tier in concept, yet there were so many distracting production-related things in execution. Randy's "wife" (not actually his wife, but an actress playing her for the camera) can be summarized as either being confused about everything or standing around in front of a door as it's being broken down by a home invader. Also, her "scream" is a sound clip being played twice in a row, and it sounds a bit like one of the screeches heard during the Fiend/Bray's various segments. Then there's all the random production crew members running around in shots.
This is the kind of shit I miss in triple H WWE. I know current shows are good but wrestling is at its best when it is chaotic. People will always remember these kind of things but will forget about most cinema things.
I remember watching all the promo material for this match at least 5 years after it happened, and getting hyped to go watch it even though I didn't give two fucks about the product at that time.
I could not believe the style of match they went for after doing stuff like this. It was so boring that confusion overshadowed my disappointment.

It seems like people's enjoyment of this segment largely depends on their age. For me, I was already an adult by this point, so I hated this segment as it felt corny as hell in a bad way, especially the actor playing Randy's wife. Personally, I thought the peak of their 08-09 feud was Randy kissing Stepth as Hunter was handcuffed, or Randy punting Vince. However, between this segment, the underwhelming WM match, and Randy having to sell for Shane's potato punches my interest in this feud had fallen off by the end.
They cut off the best part! While HHH is getting arrested Orton starts yelling at him and trips over the landscaping and hits the ground hard. It was hilarious. Love this segment, good times.
And kicked his father in law in the head, and his brother in law, and beat him down like a dozen times prior.
This is actually one of the more justifiable babyface beat downs lol
And the feud started when Randy RKO’ed Stephanie and that’s when they started to acknowledge HHH and Stephanie as a married couple on the air after their kayfabe divorce
I was so incredibly in on Randy Orton at this point. He was on the run of a lifetime IMO and anyone saying this SHOULDNT have Main Evented was not watching at the time. It's probably my most disappointing Mania main event to date. Match should've been a street fight and Orton should've won.
The build to wrestlemania 25 was pretty great overall. Sad that the Shawn/ taker match and maybe mitb are the only things really worth going back and revisiting.
What's funny is you so many fans complained about the Hagman/Swerve home invasion angle and how it made no sense and it's like ummmmm did you see the Orton/HHH home invasion angle?

Its wild how quickly the roster changed between 2009 and 2011. Within 2 years, the main event scene goes from that to: Orton, Cena, Punk, Del Rio.

I remember this segment was top tier in concept, yet there were so many distracting production-related things in execution. Randy's "wife" (not actually his wife, but an actress playing her for the camera) can be summarized as either being confused about everything or standing around in front of a door as it's being broken down by a home invader. Also, her "scream" is a sound clip being played twice in a row, and it sounds a bit like one of the screeches heard during the Fiend/Bray's various segments. Then there's all the random production crew members running around in shots.
09 Orton was something else
This is real to me. My childhood was shocked at what was happening but I liked it. That guy running was funny who was that lmao

This is the kind of shit I miss in triple H WWE. I know current shows are good but wrestling is at its best when it is chaotic. People will always remember these kind of things but will forget about most cinema things.

I remember watching all the promo material for this match at least 5 years after it happened, and getting hyped to go watch it even though I didn't give two fucks about the product at that time. I could not believe the style of match they went for after doing stuff like this. It was so boring that confusion overshadowed my disappointment.

Yup. It seems like people's enjoyment of this segment largely depends on their age. For me, I was already an adult by this point, so I hated this segment as it felt corny as hell in a bad way, especially the actor playing Randy's wife. Personally, I thought the peak of their 08-09 feud was Randy kissing Stepth as Hunter was handcuffed, or Randy punting Vince. However, between this segment, the underwhelming WM match, and Randy having to sell for Shane's potato punches my interest in this feud had fallen off by the end.
They cut off the best part! While HHH is getting arrested Orton starts yelling at him and trips over the landscaping and hits the ground hard. It was hilarious. Love this segment, good times.
Didnt even wait till Randy was out, nor threatend a baby. Trips gone soft, thankfully Swerve learned from better men
HHH match with a great build that ends with a long boring Harley Race style match. Name a better duo
HHH was the babyface in this feud btw.
In his defense, the week before, Orton had knocked out Stephanie and kissed her unconscious body while he made a handcuffed Triple H watch.
And kicked his father in law in the head, and his brother in law, and beat him down like a dozen times prior. This is actually one of the more justifiable babyface beat downs lol
And the feud started when Randy RKO’ed Stephanie and that’s when they started to acknowledge HHH and Stephanie as a married couple on the air after their kayfabe divorce
This comment one makes sense if you ignore all the stuff Orton had done up to that point

I was so incredibly in on Randy Orton at this point. He was on the run of a lifetime IMO and anyone saying this SHOULDNT have Main Evented was not watching at the time. It's probably my most disappointing Mania main event to date. Match should've been a street fight and Orton should've won.

The build to wrestlemania 25 was pretty great overall. Sad that the Shawn/ taker match and maybe mitb are the only things really worth going back and revisiting.
