You can take steroids safely in a controlled/moderate approach, overseen by a health professional, and suffer very few negative effects (although they still exist and are unavoidable). Lots of amateur athletes looking to get big quick won't do it in a safe way, and open themselves up for massive health problems. Like any other deteriorating substance on the body, the longer you abuse them, the more negative consequences stack up.
